Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Late Night Piano . . . For Your Ears Only.......2007-04-03

For passionate music lovers like me, listening to this compilation CD provides a great entertainment with its relaxing sounds of jazz piano music. I love all the timeless melodies in this collection of piano works that are full of majesty and virtuosity as played by a bevy of the most influential jazz pianists of all-time such as Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Duke Ellington, Erroll Garner, George Shearing, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Teddy Wilson, among others. It has a little bit of everything for your listening pleasure starting off with Erroll Garner's signature piece, "Misty" to the last track, Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges' "Just A Memory."

"Misty" has that tranquil beauty that whispers to your ears down to your heart and soul. I love it to death that I listen to it with a few repeats. "Moonlight In Vermont" by Oscar Peterson Trio and "As Time Goes By" by Teddy Wilson and Gerry Mulligan have that calming effect that soothes all your cares away. Count Basie's performance in "She's Funny That Way" is so full of innate charms that shows off his majestic style.

The First Lady of Song, Ella Fitzgerald, sings gorgeously the intro of "You Go To My Head" to her version of "Going Out Of My Head" with Duke Ellington's accompaniment on piano. One great Bossa Nova tune made it to the list, "Chega De Saudade" by Antonio Carlos Jobim. Bill Evans plays a Cole Porter gem "I've Got You Under My Skin" in a swinging fashion.

This collection of beautiful piano works is perfect for a late night listen.

Wholeheartedly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Quite good, but..........2000-08-18

The music is great and the setting is intimate, but Bobby Short's delivery ocassionally annoys me. He has a tendency to break into an abrupt piercing warble and his phrasing seems choppy to me. It's not enough to ruin the album, but it can be distracting.

5 out of 5 stars Bobby Short at His Best.......2000-01-14

Owning nearly all of Bobby Short's albums, this is the one I play the most. I love his style! He recorded at an actual preformance which added more intimacy to the of the album.

    5 out of 5 stars Agree!.......1998-10-07

There cannot be a better night of classic American music than a Bobby Short gig at the Carlyle.

    5 out of 5 stars SUBLIME!.......1998-08-24

This is Short at his best. There's no brass section to drown out his voice or his piano, and you can hear the audience at the Cafe Carlyle react to his performance. Short's interpretation, along with Beverly Peer's and Robert Scott's, never gets stale. You can listen to this CD a hundred times and hear new aspects each time.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Brubeck .......2006-06-15

This is by far my favorite Brubeck. Pure delight, excellent balance amongst the musicians, all his best songs. Mulligan excels on this, without running all over the others in the group. An incredible work.

    5 out of 5 stars What can I Say.....Bob Militello.......2005-07-27

There's nothing to say. With Militello in the 4tet. And a history of nothing but sweetness, class, style, and great jazz. And do not get me started on Mr. Brubeck as a living composer in classical music and jazz....amazing. Thank you soooo, so very much. The whole 4tet...

5 out of 5 stars Can Brubeck do wrong?.......2003-08-31

I've never been disappointed by a Brubeck album and this is no exception to that rule. A delightful human being in addition to being an exceptionally innovative musician, Brubeck continues to surprise and amaze me. Try it, you'll like it!

5 out of 5 stars (Almost) Everything You Need For A Great Night of Jazz.......2001-01-31

This is the first of two live recordings that Brubeck released in the mid-90's. Like the second release, Nightshift, this CD chronicles a six day set at New York's legendary Blue Note in october, 1993.

In many ways, this CD is superior to its sequeal, not the least of them being the fact that it is quieter, more contemplative, and perfectly captures that 2-in-the-morning mood it seeks to project. In fact, in some places such as the haunting "Koto's Song" or "So Wistully Sad", its so quiet you'll have to turn the volume up just capture the full impact of the piece.

The opening number on the CD, "These Foolish Things", is, as the liner notes say, absolutely masterful and my personal favorite. As the piece begins, Brubeck takes the audience through a winding, extraordinary series of abstractions that must have left them wondering, at least for awhile, what song the group was actually playing. When Brubeck finally gets to the opening melody, in a way that makes everything that came before seem entirely logical, you can hear applause and gasps of recognition from the crowd.

If you're looking for something to put on the stereo for those late nights, when the lights are low, you couldn't do any better than this. In the process, you'll be privileged to hear one of the best musicians America has produced.

5 out of 5 stars All of the escence of quality bar jazz without the smoke..........2000-03-27

This is quiet listening jazz at its fullest, it is mood and thought provoking. A great CD to introduce a newcomer to jazz as well as to further a jazz afficionado's love. I thoroughly enjoy listening to this CD and can't find enough opportunities to hear and share it.

    Album Description

This is the perfect setting for acoustic guitarist Earl Klugh, playing strong melodies (including such standards as "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes," "Laura," "Mona Lisa" and "Two for the Road") while joined by strings and several horns in an orchestra arranged and conducted by Dave Mathews. As usual for a Klugh session, the guitarist sticks mostly to the themes and does not improvise much, as he never considered himself a jazz player; but the overall effect is quite pleasing.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars My favourite late night flight!.......2007-05-10

Earl Klugh enjoyed incredible success with his self-titled debut album in 1976 and with follow ups that included among others, personal favourites like Living Inside Your Love (also released in 1976), 1977's Finger Paintings, 1979's Heart String, the Grammy Award winner, One on One (with Bob James) and, just before this one in 1980, "Dream Come True". Klugh was the veritable Jay-Z of the jazz-fusion world back in the 70s and 80s, in the sense that he rarely if ever, allowed a year to go by without releasing at least one very good album.

Many considered this particular album (also originally released in 1980) a risky departure but his fans loved it and I was one of those fans. I think the album broadened his appeal because his next album, 1981's Crazy for You (another of my most loved) was his first album to go gold.

On paper, it sounds simple enough: Klugh plays 13 well-known songs on his acoustic guitar with the impeccable precision that he's renowned for. These are all standards - songs like "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", "Laura" and "Mona Lisa" - and Klugh mainly plays solo, though on some cuts he plays with a full orchestra (arranged and conducted by Dave Matthews). The sound always remains basic and sparse though. He is joined by a handful of musicians mind you; there's acoustic bass, piano, rhythm guitar and Latin percussion here and there, and there are even people like Marcus Miller on bass on a few selections and Dr Gibb on percussion on "Jamaica Farewell".

But this is mostly about Klugh's tasteful and intimate sound, with lush and sweeping strings and horns in the background. It's truly beautiful and absolutely perfect for those late nights as the album title suggests. There isn't a dud to be found anywhere on this CD but I still have my favourites: "Nice To Be Around (Nice To Have Around)", "Like A Lover", "Laura", "Triste", "Two For The Road" and "A Time For Love".

Klugh took the theme just one step further in 1984's Nightsongs (cleverly subtitled "More Late Night Guitar"), which if possible, I love even more. For the orchestration on that album, Klugh tapped both Dave Matthews and Don Sebesky and with songs like "Theme From "The Pawnbroker"", "The Look Of Love" (Klugh's version was the first I ever heard), "Nature Boy", "Night Song" and "See See Rider", and with help from people like Barry Eastmond on keys, Brian Brake on drums, Sammy Figueroa on percussion and a special appearance on "Night Song" from Toots Thielsman on harmonica, this is also one not to be missed. Also look out for "The Shadow Of Your Smile" with Ron Carter on bass, Grady Tate on drums and a wonderful piano solo from Eastmond.

Earl Klugh went on to produce many a phenomenal album, way too many to list here but I'd say to any Earl Klugh fan or any fan of acousitc guitar - your collection is not complete unless have these two now iconic albums in it.

5 out of 5 stars the best classical jazz guitar album of all time.......2006-05-31

for jazz enthusiast, this album is a must and if you don't have it your missing the greatest guitar melody of all time; its a stress-relief music that is so gentle to the musical ears particularly the rendition of EK " LIKE A LOVER" that one could possibly describe it as if your listening it in paradise!be sure to get a copy of this masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect For Late Night's Listening Enjoyment.......2003-11-17

I was introduced to Earl Klugh music by a friend way back in early '80s. Since then I have followed his recording career because of my love for guitar music. My late father owned a number of LPs of Chet Atkins, hence, my great appreciation for guitar music. The greatest influence in Earl Klugh's life is Chet Atkins, and I believe that he is as equally talented and creative as his idol.

I have collected some of the albums he recorded, "Living Inside Your Love," "Magic In Your Eyes," "Finger Paintings," "Heart String," "One On One" (with Bob James), "Sounds And Visions, Volume 2," "The Best of Earl Klugh - Vol. 2 (CD) "Late Night Guitar" (CD)and "Solo Guitar" (CD). This is the best Earl Klugh CD I own, next to "Solo Guitar." It has excellent material and impeccably interpreted by one of the greatest acoustic guitarists of all time, from the initial track Jerome Kern's "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" to the last track "I'll Never Say Goodbye." It's just perfect for easy listening and relaxation.

My personal favorites aside from the first track includes "Like A Lover," "Triste," "Tenderly," "Two For The Road," "Jamaica Farewell," and Paul Williams' "Nice To Be Around."

Highly recommended! I guarantee it will be a lifetime of listening enjoyment!

4 out of 5 stars A Little Late Night Guitar Music.......2001-12-16

I was very glad to see this come out on CD, since my old cassette tape went south (just like all of them do eventually). This collection made me an Earl Klugh fan. Songs like "Jamaica Farewell" and "Mirabella" also got me more interested in acoustic guitar and learning to play it (albeit pretty raggedly). I would have added a few more Klugh gems to this collection, since it's rather short. But overall, for relaxing music, this is a fine CD.

5 out of 5 stars "WHEN IT'S TIME FOR LOVE...".......2001-03-05

put on "Late Night Guitar," Earl Klugh's masterpiece, to set the mood off right. Songs like "Tenderly," "Mona Lisa," "Like a Lover," and my favorite, "I'll Never Say Goodbye (The Promise)" put one in a state of pure relaxation and a desire to be with the one you love. Earl's playing is so melodic and filled with so much emotion, you're completely taken in by his artistry. From first song to last, you're hooked. The flow of this CD is simply beautiful. One of my favorite periods in Jazz is the '70's and some of the best artists (Noel Pointer, Grover Washington Jr., David Sanborn to name a few)who came out of that era of Jazz-Fusion continue to be my favorites. Earl is one of them. I've got a lot of his work and this is what I consider a classic. A must have for Earl Klugh fans.

4 out of 5 stars Late night Bird?.......2007-01-26

There is an implied mellow or introspective mood with an album called LATE NIGHT JAZZ. Such dreamy feelings are well-established on this collection until Charlie Parker jars us from our reveries and gets the cops banging on the door with his blaring and raucous rendition of "Night And Day." This jolt halfway through the set is enough to give a ferret insomnia!

Except for that one misstep (and a quick poke-in-the-ribs crescendo on "Body And Soul"), LATE NIGHT JAZZ consistently delivers perfect wee small hours music, as performed by some of the best names in mid-20th century jazz. Transfer quality here is top notch-- songs are full-length. No liner notes beyond a playlist.

5 out of 5 stars Seductive Dance Music..........2006-01-17

A deeply soulful house, erotic, stylish, emotive and sensual recording made by King Britt, fantastic selection of songs, with his entry in Swank's Recordings Late Night series, King focus on another of his strengths: gently soulful, highly atmospheric dance music.
The set's tropical vibe and Latin influence almost seems like the perfect soundtrack for hot nights (smoke) in the beach or in your sofa (smoke). The album is a mind expanding journey that builds from something soulful into something really smoke. Britt's own mix of Plantlife's "When She Smiles" is one of the best moments on the CD. Vocalist KimBlee's seductive voice on Solu Music's Naturally also provides that extra bit of spark. Britt never strays too far from his trademark sensual house sound, which makes this album of contemporary rhythms a great addition to anyone's collection.
Everything in SLOW-MOTION continues track after track in seductive way and you feel your body stay in a perfect moment, music for minds, for hungry ears, for perfect and slow dance, alone or with company and this record is a good selection, must have.

    3 out of 5 stars King Britt.......2005-12-10

Late Night with King Britt is a pretty mellow downbeat album. It has a slower more R&B flavor to the music. This is good for late night listening.

I've actually used it to drive to work with for the calming effect it has on me (traffic in Phx is awful).

On the same note, there are hundreds of other downbeat/ chill albums out there and this one's not exactly breaking new ground here.

Overall, a good album, not a great one. I'm not sure it's worth the whopping overpriced listing of $17.98, but it'd definitely be worth a used price.

4 out of 5 stars LATE NIGHT WITH KING BRITT.......2005-10-04

This CD is an excellent to any House music lovers collection. Britt puts all the mixes on here smooth and effortlessly. What I look for and enjoy is a CD that I can listen through without skipping any songs. This CD does that. If you love that deep and soulful House music this is the CD for you.

5 out of 5 stars from Solo Piano Publications.......2004-09-03

"Jazz After Hours" is an ensemble recording featuring Lisa Hilton on piano, Eric Marienthal on sax, Tal Bergman on drums, and Reggie McBride on bass. Of the eleven tracks, seven are originals and four are arrangements of jazz classics. I have to admit that I prefer Hilton's solo piano work, but this is a really nice selection of pieces that place an emphasis on fun. "Malibu" has been receiving extensive airplay in the US and abroad, and recently reached the #1 position on the Top 20 SIngles World Jazz Chart. On most of the tracks, the piano is part of the ensemble rather than the lead, but the band is excellent and Eric Marienthal really cooks on sax.

"Malibu" is an upbeat and joyous tribute to Hilton's seaside hometown. Known for its carefree surfers and sunny beaches, this piece captures that kind of party spirit. Bill Evans' "Waltz For Debby" is a beautiful trio for piano, bass, and drums - soulful and sensuous, and a great arrangement. "Nocturne" was inspired by Chopin and is a standout. Cool, dark, and slinky, it does indeed sound like the middle of the night. "All That" is another favorite, and sounds like a blast to play. Hilton and Marienthal pull out the stops and really let loose. Duke Ellington's "Azure" is again piano, bass, and drums, and is leisurely and "bluesy." "When We Met" is the only solo piano piece, and I love it. Composed in the style of a standard, it is both old and new, and has a beautiful, romantic feeling. "Listen to Your Heart" closes the CD on a gentle, intimate note.

"Jazz After Hours" is a great album for relaxing and reenergizing, a backdrop for an intimate dinner, or even good party music.

5 out of 5 stars Lisa Does It Again!!.......2004-06-02

Her latest album contains the same formula as her last release. Assisted by veteran Saxophonist Eric Marienthal, she continues her venture of providing great, classic Jazz. "Malibu" starts the CD off right with an assist from Bassist Reggie McBride and Drummer Tal Bergman. Her covers of the Miles Davis classic, "All Blues" and Duke Ellington's, "Azure" gives fans of 50's & 60's Jazz something to appreciate. My personal favorites were "Listen to Your Heart" and "All That". The old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" applies to this CD. Lisa definitely sticks to the same old routine and she scores another winner!

2 out of 5 stars 1981 Release in Living MONO!!!.......2006-01-14

I was instantly disappointed when I put this CD on and listened to the wonderful world of Carole Sager in MONO. I was suspicious right off because the sound was pinched and compressed, so I put on my 100 dollar headphones to discover the CD was transfered to disc in Mono! It is a crime because nobody still recorded music in mono during the early '80s!!! Also the packaging was pretty low-budget, considering the price that was slapped on this disc. Another change from the 1981 LP was how the songs blended into one another. There were some nice segues between tracks on the original Record and the sound production was decent for that time period. My disc faded some songs early and there wasn't the nice segues anymore. Now I see some people are asking 30 bucks for this piece of junk. It could have been a real beauty but Boardwalk really messed up! Let's hope that the Japanese import that is coming soon will be done correctly, and allow this beautiful cd to be heard the way it should be heard again! Yes, in true STEREO!

    5 out of 5 stars outstanding!.......2005-07-24

i really wish carole would produce another album of songs. she's so gifted at expressing the human condition. her songs are well-crafted, interesting, and moving. i really miss her!

5 out of 5 stars Okay..She wouldn't Make it on "American Idol" but..........2005-07-13

People debate all the time if someone can "SING"...Well..I think it is safe to say NOT to many would jump to defend Carole when someone says SHE CAN NOT. However....being one of the 70's best song writer and having enough musical freinds turned out THREE of my all time Lps. I loved this music in 1981 and I still enjoy it just as much. However...as I began with Carole's vocal abilty not being super....but that doesn't stop this from being a really enjoyable Cd.

    1 out of 5 stars Big miss.......2005-02-27

I am a fan of this typ of music, and a fan of carole as a writer, but I must say that I was not impressed at all by her vocals on this album. She was very stiff and very weak sounding. Plus, the overall production of the songs was lacking something as well. Kind of sloppily pasted together. My advice... stick to writing, and not to singing!!

3 out of 5 stars Not Essential Listening.......2003-10-11

I remember being captivated by this album when it was released in 1981. Burt and Carole created the ultimate in sophisticated adult pop music with this grand song-cycle on the meditations of love found, lost, and reexamined. Yet upon hearing this album over 20 years later, it doesn't hold the same appeal. Save for the heartbreaking "You and Me," and the devastatingly honest "Somebody's Been Lyin'" many of songs, although luxuriously produced and arranged, seem fleeting and kind of half baked. I would compare this album to cotton candy: its oh so sweet, but you can get sick of it real quick. I would no longer classify this album as essential listening,
