Here's the great Dave Holland, presenting a mixed album that at times flies, at times stumbles. Saxophonist Eric Person may not rank as the most striking sideman in the Holland quartet and quintet pantheon, but he's no slouch, either. And he is well shored up by three masterly collaborators. On vibes and marimba, Steve Nelson takes the time to find an unpredictable but just-right path in his solos, and nicely expands the group's sonic range. Drummer Gene Jackson flits and shifts, yet remains masterfully poised and always ready to dart in under the front line. Throughout--as always--Holland is extraordinary. His thrumming, throbbing sound envelops and locks the band in. He contributes a beautiful arco statement to the beginning of "Lazy Snake" that is classic Holland. Singer Cassandra Wilson contributes a setting of "Equality," a poem by Maya Angelou. --Peter Monaghan

4 out of 5 stars Do you like the vibes? .......2006-10-25

"Dream of the Elders" is an enjoyable experience, especially for those who appreciate the vibes. Most performances fall slightly left of the mainstream. The overall feeling is relaxed and dark. I would describe the disc as sounding like the typical fare played on jazz radio stations. The music is serious and the integrity is unquestionably high. On the other hand, there are no highlights. There may be some contenders, but nothing stands out. There is a predictability and blandness to this effort. With so much amazing Dave Holland out there, consider "Dream of the Elders" after acquiring essentials like "Extended Play: Live at Birdland" and "Extensions."

4 out of 5 stars What a band!!.......1999-02-18

I had the good fortune to hear THIS configuration of Dave's band. It was great. Eric Person a masterful saxophonist nearly taking over the band at times with his great presence. Gene Jackson and his poli-rhythmic fire and Eric's interplay made the music really rise. This is a good CD. But it does not catch that band's collective fire. But shows the grace and lyrical genuis of its members.
