5 out of 5 stars I Was Touched By The Magic.......2003-05-24

My Uncle "passed" away a few weeks ago and I inherited a few CDs that belonged to him. Included in the group was "Think About You All The Time". Lord...what a thrill. Out of the sadness associated with the death of a love one to find such magic in music. Thank you Mr. Lovejoy for your words and music. I will be purchasing more of his CDs this week! I especially loved "Thank You" and "Nothing Takes The Place Of You".

5 out of 5 stars Think About you All The Time.......2001-11-02

Ronnie LovejoY's recordings are sung with so mauch emotion and enthusiasm. Ronnie seems to have had a personal experience about what he is singing. I am his sister-inlaw and one of his biggest fans. "Think About you all the Time", seemed to have been an important moment in his life and a sad but yet happy moment. Ronnie's mellow voice and story telling lyrics let's you know this record will be sensational hit someday.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST OF RONNIE.......2001-09-03

I AM A BIG FAN OF RONNIE'S. HE'S A HOMEBOY WE ARE PROUD OF. SINCE HIS FIRST ALBUM "SUDDENLY"; I HAVE BEEN HOOKED ON HIS MUSIC. HIS SONGS TELL A STORY. SOME MAKE YOU LAUGH, OTHERS MAKE YOU REMEMBER, AND SOME EVEN MAKE YOU CRY. HIS TALENT IS REMARKABLE AND HE'LL GO DOWN IN HISTORY AS ONE OF THE GREATEST BLUES ARTIST OF HIS TIME. RONNIE WE LOVE YOU AND KEEP ON SINGIN THE BLUES.

5 out of 5 stars Still an undiscovered gem.......2005-11-28

This is one of my favourite Tristano-school records; it's been deleted for a while but you can still often find it remaindered. It remains obscure because it doesn't feature Tristano, Marsh or Konitz, the most famous members of the circle. What it DOES feature is (1) the excellent Ronnie Ball on piano, who has a chipper take on Tristano's piano style which I always find enjoyable (very different from the dourer Sal Mosca, the "other" Tristano-style pianist to emerge at this time). I'm mystified why Ball vanished after this--is he still around? Where is he? (like Peter Ind he was British). (2) on tenor, Ted Brown, one of the best of the Prez-influenced tenors of the 1950s but again an eclipsed player. He's still recording, mostly for the Stteplechase label. _All About Ronnie_ though is one of the few early recordings to really feature him strongly. (3) Willie Dennis on trombone--this is the most exciting thing about the album for me, & if you've never heard Dennis before prepare to be amazed at his work here. Sharp-eared listeners will have noticed him on some of Mingus's albums like _Mingus Ah Um_, but he never got more than a bar or two of solo space on those discs; here is basically the only spot you can hear Dennis solo at length, & it's enough to knock out any trombonist who hears it. Dennis's virtuosic long-lined tale-spinning style an intriguing alternative to the choppier JJ Johnson approach that was standard in the period, & I very much regret Dennis's unlucky fate (he died young, I believe in a car accident). (4) the rhythm section is the "house" rhythm section for Savoy of the period, Wendell Marshall and Kenny Clarke. Some lovely playing by Clarke in particular.

This album needs a proper reissue in one regard: the liner notes are a mess. The track titles are wrong: here is, as far as I can determine, the right order:

    1. Pennie Packer
    2. Prez Sez
    3. Feather Bed
    4. I Don't Stand a Ghost of a Chance
    5. Little Quail
    6. Sweet and Lovely
    7. Citrus Season

One last mystery: who is the "David" who is credited with "Prez Sez"? I'm wondering if this is a typo for "Dennis".....

Anyway, this is a hidden gem: don't pass it up. If you've heard the Marsh/Brown/Ball sessions now issued on Tristano's _Intuition_, you'll find this an essential companion volume, as the group sound is roughly similar. & Dennis's work must be heard.

4 out of 5 stars On the ball.......2005-03-05

This is a very good mainstream-modern mid'50s date. Tenor saxophonis Ted Brown is particularly good--his sound is very warm and mellow. Tune selection is outstanding, especially the originals ("Citrus season" and "Little quail"). BEWARE: the order of the titles on the CD are all messed up and out of sequence to the way they are listed on the tray card.

This is a compilation of Chris' work with the great Stan Kenton Orchestra and then her first solo tracks on Bethlehem before exploding into superstardom on Atlantic. This girl was a knockout from the start--I have airchecks with the Claude Thorhill orchestra and she's incredible even back then--and these early recordings retain their magic a half-century later. To hear her recording session tapes (no, not on the album my dears) is something--with all the commotion around her she is never less than rock-sure what she is doing though from take to take she may refashion a song totally. The musicians and producers who have worked with Chris inevitably comment on her laid-back, untemperamental, matter-of-fact personality in a field cluttered with phonies. This is a great collection.
