Swing might seem an exclusively urban phenomenon, a facet of cities like Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and Kansas City. Don't mention that to Matt Catingub, vocalist, alto saxophonist, pianist, Copa Cat Pack bandleader, and all-around Big Kahuna. Catingub's got swing pegged as ripe for a Hawaiian connection. On tunes like "Pearly Shells" (familiar to many as the melody for C&H sugar commercials in the 1970s), he sounds utterly convincing. He leads his 12-piece band through melodies that don't challenge with unfamiliarity so much as they ring with a comfy simplicity that keeps its cool by simply swinging hard. The vibe is laid back in the way Count Basie was, which is to say that the Copa Cat Pack doesn't get worked up in an Ellingtonian display of complex arrangements. What's best, the band can really cook, with Catingub throwing out solid solos while the band powers ahead danceably. Their take on Dizzy Gillespie's "Night in Tunisia" is so quick that you miss the feeling of a cop-show theme, the utterly fun, quick jolt. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars Two of the best.......2006-10-09

This CD is two very good musicians playing swinging relaxed jazz. The fact that both use the ukelele as their main instrument has nothing to do with anything. Great musicians can use any instrument, and both of these fellows are great musicians. There is love and laughter here, too. Beautiful melodies, nice chord substitutions and just a happy, swinging set. Well worth the money if you like good music. This CD also has Ohta-San's wonderful song "Song for Anna" which he plays solo. I don't think there has ever been a more beautiful song, no matter what instrument is used.

Attention, ukulele lovers! Based on the success of its Legends of Accordion compilation, Rhino Records has brought out this memorable 18-track set of tunes featuring the uke. Produced by Jim Beloff (author of the near-definitive ukulele coffee-table book The Ukulele: A Visual History), Legends contains predictable artists such as Tiny Tim, Cliff "Ukulele Ike" Edwards, Arthur Godfrey, and Roy Smeck, along with lesser-known greats such as Ohta San, King Benny Nawahi, and George Formby. Sure--like its accordion predecessor--the collection is a once-over-lightly pastiche of artists and styles, but for most of your uke needs, it'll more than do. True enthusiasts would also be wise to check out Smeck's classic solo album, Roy Smeck Plays Hawaiian Guitar, Banjo, Ukulele, and Guitar. --Jason Verlinde

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Keep your ukulele in your hand........2005-09-01

This is an entertaining CD. It covers a variety of ukulele playing styles and music styles. It shows all those non-believers that the ukulele is something more than just a toy. It truly is a beautiful instrument and a beautiful sounding instrument. This is demonstrated by the performers on this CD. Most of the performers are virtuosos, but the most famous ukulele player of all time, Tiny Tim, technically wasn't very accomplished. Not to say that I don't like Tiny Tim, but his playing is amateurish next to the other performers here. Anyway, this CD covers a lot of different styles and it quite entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for Uke lovers everywhere!.......2003-07-04

This was the first of many uke-related cd's I have bought, and it still stands as the best. A new uke player, I was amazed that the little 4-stringed "hawaiian guiter" could perform such varied musical styles-from jazz to flamenco; from love songs to humor. When do we get "Legends 2"?

5 out of 5 stars From a ukulele player:.......2002-09-24

Don't listen to the guy from Tennessee. This is a fantastic compilation. Any ukulele player, Hawaiian or otherwise, will tell you that most of the musicians on this CD are the ukulele greats. Ohta-san, Cliff Edwards, Roy Smeck, Lyle Ritz, George Formby and others show what can be done on the tiny instrument that many consider a toy. They show us what a great instrument the uke really is. Cliff Edwards, known as Ukulele Ike, plays and sings with his wonderful voice. Some may know him better as the voice of Jiminy Cricket. Tiny Tim's rendition of Tiptoe through the Tulips is fully understood when one listens to the original 1929 falsetto version of the song by Nick Lucas. (Listen to it here on Amazon.com.) Oh... and there are plenty of Hawaiians on this CD. I recommend it highly.

1 out of 5 stars Review.......2001-12-21

I am disapointed with this CD. This is not Hawaian! It's more like 50's music. Amazon should not have put this in the Hawaian section.

4 out of 5 stars Great Sampler.......2001-08-30

This is a great sampler, while not a Tiny Tim fan, after reading the profile and listening to the track, I came away with a better appreciation. The Otha-San "Little Grass Shack" is absolutely wonderful in fact I ordered the CD from which it was gleaned. Smeck is, well, musically verbious and should be listened to with that thought in mind. All in all, nicely done!

Album Description

He comes together on this records, his first solo offering at 96, with a group of young musicians known as The Essential Resophonics. The combination of steel guitar, double bass, Spanish guitar and ukulele covers some of Tapia's favorite standards in their respective genre. These recordings, which occured on two days in Feb. of 2002, represent a photograph of a piece of musical history. The portrait is completed with two historic recordings from 1936: Tropical Swing and Stars and Stripes.

5 out of 5 stars Hawaiian Music Done Right.......2007-01-19

The star rating of this CD is misleading...this is a phenomenal album from a ukelele legend (hard to believe that this guy is almost 100!!!)I actually stumbled upon this CD while browsing the tropical music section of Border's in anticipation of a trip to Hawaii. I scanned it and immediately purchased it. Every song on this CD is lazy, relaxing tropical swing (think hawaiian with a little bounce to it). He tackles old jazz standards (Mood Indigo and Mack the Knife) among others and makes every song his own. The production is very good, and the musicianship is top-notch. If this CD doesn't magically transport you to the islands every time you put it on, then you oughta check your speakers. HIGHLY recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Incredible Uke Man.......2005-09-27

This album is a gorgeous mix of music performed by what I would deem a National Treasure. I saw this man play live this year (2005) and he can even make the uke strings sound like a drum! Fans of Hawaiiana, uke music, or vaudeville will all enjoy this album.

1 out of 5 stars Tropical Swing - Bill Tapia.......2005-08-20

4 out of 5 stars A Spike Jones chronology of his earliest records.......1999-01-19

This British import is actually a chronology of Spike's earliest 78s for Bluebird / RCA, from his first recording session in 1941 ("Red Wing") through 1945. Included are his hits ("Cocktails for Two," "Der Fuehrer's Face") and obscure B-sides ("The Covered Wagon Rolled Right Along," "Leave the Dishes In the Sink"). Spike's band was in its prime during this time, making for a good collection. Editing is good, especially joining the six parts of "The Nutcracker Suite." But note that the source material is scratchy 78s!

Roy Smeck was one of the earliest nonclassical guitar virtuosos, and his expertise on Hawaiian guitar, banjo, and ukulele is well-documented on this CD. Influenced by such greats as Eddie Lang, Ikey Robinson, banjoist Harry Reser, and steel guitarist Sol Hoopii, Smeck carved out a big-time niche as a "string wizard" on the vaudeville circuit. Unable to sing very well, Smeck had to grab the audience's attention with a dazzling barrage of stage tricks and gimmicks. These tricky novelty numbers are featured here, while many of his more tasteful accompaniment records are absent. Smeck was clearly a master musician and a gifted entertainer; unfortunately, many of these tracks would no doubt be more impressive witnessed as a stage act. Still, this CD is highly recommended. --Terry Zwigoff

        4 out of 5 stars A WHIZ!.......2006-08-13

Roy Smeck could play any type of stringed instrument and play it like a man posessed. This CD covers the years 1926-49. He was truly a guitar whiz, and you will be amazed by his dexterity! If you like this type of music, you will probably also enjoy the music of Sol Hoopi and "King" Benny Nawahi.

5 out of 5 stars Dazzling, fireball fingerpicking.......2002-11-13

Hotshot trick guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Roy Smeck tore up the Vaudeville circuit in the 1920s and early '30s, playing a dazzling mix of jazz, blues and Hawaiian-style music on guitar, banjo, mandolin and ukulele. He also became a world-famous author of countless music instruction books... This CD samples some of his best Hawaiian-style recordings of the 1930s, ranging from straight Hawaiian music to ragtime-y material and jazzy flights similar to Django Reinhardt's early stuff. Cool record, though you have to be really into instrumental material to sit through the whole disc. Nice sound quality, too!

        5 out of 5 stars ........2000-01-22

Four decades before Jimi Hendrix played guitar with his teeth, Roy Smeck was biting the strings on America's vaudeville circuit. An astonishing instrumentalist already, Smeck had to compensate for his lack of a singing voice by developing jokes and visual guitar gimmicks. Among his tricks were simulating a banjo duet on a single banjo, or playing Yiddish, Chinese or Scottish instrumental versions of "Yes Sir, That's My Baby." Roy could play anything with strings on it, and he could do it upside down, behind his back, or both. Eventually Hollywood discovered him and he was featured in the first talking picture ever. Ironically, "talkies" proved to be the downfall of vaudeville, and with it went Smeck's career. But to this day, Smeck remains America's original guitar hero. His virtuosity is rivaled by few, and this superb collection by Yazoo features 14 intrumentals with nothin' fancy but incredible playing.

        1 out of 5 stars I DON'T KNOW WHAT I WAS THINKING.......2002-04-28

Uh, where's the Hawaiian part? This is a hot tight band, with a big TONIGHT SHOW sound. And a couple of wedding singers.

Real tight, corny arrangements. Good music.

But, "We're Going To The Hukilao" never sounded worse.

If you like good music without a Hawaiian feeling, boy! this is your CD!

I'll keep it, though. My wife really likes it.

You decide. (But think: NOT HAWAIIAN)

        5 out of 5 stars THIS'LL MAKE YOU SMILE.......2002-02-03

I first heard BIG KAHUNA and his COPA CAT PACK on the latest Rosemary Clooney album SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY. That album is a winner and it is easy to see why "the girl singer" loves working with this big band.

HAWAIIAN SWING is an album to cheer you when you're down; it's an album to play when you are cleaning the house; it's an album to listen to with friends at a party; it's an album to make you listen to songs you know and have heard your whole life (i.e. Benny Goodman's "Stompin' At The Savoy' or Dizzie Gillespie's "Night in Tunisia," etc.)and hear them as if for the first time. It's a big band sound with a 21st Century, Hawaiian twist.

The vocals are handled terrifically by The Big Kahuna and Linda Harmon. The entire band is comprised of saxes, trumpets, piano, trombones, bass and drums. It is a sound that will catch you off guard and make you smile...broadly. I have played this album, literally, dozens of times since buying it less than a month ago. The sound, as usual with Concord Jazz, is first rate.

It's hard to pick favorites on this dizzyingly fine CD, but I especially liked the gorgeous Johnny Mercer ballad, "I Remember You," Duke Ellington's "Love You Madly" and one of the wonderful original songs: Matt Catingub's (The Kahuna, himself)"After Hours." Catingub also plays alto sax, piano and arranges the various numbers!
And wait til you hear their version of Rosie's classic "Come On-A-My House" sung by Catingub with David Wells on tenor sax. Wow: What a great album. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

        5 out of 5 stars Hawaiian Souvenir........2000-11-14

I bought this CD while holidaying in Honolulu last month. Every time I listen to it, 'Pearly Shells' and 'Blue Hawaii' conjure up fond memories of Hawaiian paradise. It was raining in Melbourne when I stepped off the plane, but this CD takes me back and makes everything alright. I love it!!

5 out of 5 stars Score one for the Big Kahuna!.......2000-01-04

Yes, it's true. The saxes are out of tune on a couple of songs. I, for one, can live with that. This CD is awesome! The band can swing with the best of them (and I've compared this CD to Basie's band with Sinatra singing and the 1964 Woody Herman band). The band plays with an unmatched energy level and has all the right stuff, i.e., a drummer that plays with intensity, enthusiasm and technique; a lead trumpeter with a sound as big as a house (and great range); world class sax solos from Da Big Kahuna and David Wells; and to top it off, a nice recording thanks to the Skywalker Sound studio. As a follower of Matt's career from the early days (with Louie B.), I can say this is the best thing the "Baby BeBopper," I mean, "Da Big Kahuna" has ever done. And that is no small accomplishment!

        5 out of 5 stars A cyclone of Swing.......1999-10-27

Wow! Man! Whew! Oh does this band smoke! It creates a remarkably buoyant feeling. It's not really "Hawaiian Swing" though---rather it's the Hawaii that a 1961 Las Vegas Tiki Lounge would conjure up. The musicality and dynamics are stunning. My only tech complaint is that the sax section has an intonation problem often bedeviling sax sections (but not as bad as on George Gee's live CD). Count Basie never would have let that through. Big Kahuna is a fabulous vocalist---the best of any I've heard today (curiously, with a whiff of Jello Biafra). Of the crop of contemporary Swing dance bands, this band rockets to the top. How about relocating from SF to Maui, guys? Now that would be paradise.

Lyle Ritz has been a studio musician for over 40 years. Usually hired to play bass, he's been heard behind the likes of Johnny Mathis, Burt Bacharach, and Frank Sinatra. On this CD he attempts to elevate the ukulele to the status of legitimate jazz instrument, accompanied by Byron Yasui on bass and Noel Okimoto on percussion. He covers material ranging from Duke Ellington to Billy Joel, with mixed success. While he's accomplished at noodling jazz that sounds similar to the more conventional guitar solos one might hear at a hotel cocktail lounge in Honolulu, there's not much point in transferring this tepid style to the ukulele except for the novelty. Then again, if you enjoy "lounge" music and are intrigued by it being performed on the ukulele, this album is for you. --Melissa Axelrod and Terry Zwigoff

        5 out of 5 stars Lyle Ritz's 'Ukulele Jazz.......1999-12-29

The liner notes in this CD mentions that Lyle played some 5,000 recording sessions with artists including the Beach Boys, Ray Charles, Tina Turner, Frank Sinatra and many others. He has performed in Oscar-winning movie scores by Burt Bacharach and John Williams, and has many television credits. But all of these performances showcased Lyle's artistry on the acoustic and electric bass. This album does not represent what most people think of as ukulele music. This is smooth jazz that casts a relaxing mood, and will leave you wondering why guitar players need those extra two strings. The same sense of rhythm and economy of notes that make great bass playing translates to wonderful ukulele jazz.
