Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Originally released as "The Living Room Tapes - Volume 1" & "The Living Room Tapes - Volume 2", this two CD set brings together, for the first time, both volumes of "The Living Room Tapes" in one package, in addition to over 30 minutes of previously unreleased material. All tracks have been digitally re-mastered. The total playing time of both CD's combined is almost two and a half hours long. This two CD set contains 23 songs including 4 previously unreleased bonus tracks. The music contained on this two disc set is some of the best Lenny Breau ever recorded. This is a rare opportunity to hear Lenny play music by Merle Travis, Jerry Reed, Bill Evans, McCoy Tyner, and many well known Jazz Standards. Lenny also performs many solo pieces in addition to the duo material with clarinetist Brad Terry. Two of the bonus tracks reveal the humorous side of Lenny's personality and are sure to put a smile on your face.

When I first received this CD it stayed playing in my computer between every other CD. I really love the whole range of Lenny's modern solo chordal guitar style represented at such an obviously happy and good time in his life.

His responsive, sensitive, artful backing styles when Brad is blowing clarinet are improvised mini-masterpieces. Great creative variety in his walking bass lines, tasty intuitive chording and counterpoint, and some of his best technical work combining fluid and gorgeous lead lines, while you never hear his technique get in the way. Some of his albums inspire deep sighs and tears in your eyes. This one makes you smile and sometime laugh out loud all the wat thru'. It is truly a joyous CD!

This beautifully remastered 2 CD set is the best news Breau fans have had in years. His playing is not only technically astounding, it's playful, imaginative and expressive. As well, this set captures the array of influences that shaped Breau's style: jazz, blues, flamenco, country and more. The previously unreleased material is awesome with Breau doing a couple of hilarious comedy skits. The remastering job done here is remarkable, a vast improvment on the quality of the original releases. GET THESE CDS!!

What a great release! The music is wonderful and the banter between Lenny and Brad is playful and thoughtful. As someone who has been involved with music my whole life, I have to disagree with the previous posting regarding sound quality. The quality is there. The highs are crisp and the lows are rounded...a perfect mix! Do yourself favor and take a listen. You WON'T be disappointed.

Anyone who is a fan of Lenny's music needs to purchase this recording. This is far and above some of his best recorded work. The sound quality is excellent throughout and Lenny's choice of material is also excellent. Volume One was originally released on LP and then on CD but has been out of print for many years now. Volume Two has NEVER been released on LP and was available on CD years ago. The new 2 CD set contains both volumes with extra tracks and all tracks have been digitally remastered. First class Lenny Breau!!

I must admit. At first I was a little skeptical about Lenny and Clarinetist Brad Terry. Mr. Terry proves himself equal to the challange of playing with Lenny Breau. The interplay between clainet and guitar is on a level rarely heard anywhere.The Bourbon Street cd with Lenny Breau and Dave Young come to mind. However there is more varity on this cd.There is also plenty of guitar solo. With Lenny playing Travis style, Jazz and Flamenco. All on a seven string nylon guitar. This was his first recorded performance on that insturment.There are also several electric guitar solos as well. I highly recommend this cd. As this is one of Lenny best.

Here lies master collection from ten years and fifty discs of examples from baroque era performed by choirs, soloists and instrumentalists.

Conducted by energetic Robert King and his King's Consort, this is just superb!

It will introduce one to baroque or add to one's enjoyment. Especially enjoyed Purcell's "Hear my prayer, O Lord" and Gabrieli's "Salvator noster."

This 4-CD set is a tribute to the concert career of the great Victoria de Los Angeles. The first 3 CDs show her totally at home in the art song of France and of her native Spain. In the French art songs, her silvery, creamy tone, her legendary legato and her perfect French diction make for wonderful and unforgettable performances. These include a sensual Scheherazade, magnificient singing in the Duparc songs and a phenomenal Poeme de L'amour et de la mer of Chausson (try to keep your eyes dry by the end of La mort de l'amour). In the Chausson, while de Los Angeles does not opt for the intensely Wagnerian approach, her sensitive singing more than does justice to the poetry and the feelings of the character. The Spanish songs showcase de Los Angeles at her most natural, flamboyant and attractive singing. The tunes are catchy, full of bouncy rhythms and De Los Angeles's fabulous voice never ceases to amaze. The 4th CD shows the wonderful chemistry between de Los angeles and the great Gerald Moore. While she does not erase memories of Fischer-Dieskau and Schwarzkopf in the Schubert selections, the Brahms songs are excellent and her Faure songs here are earth shaking in their elegance and refinement. The Italian and the famous Handel aria helps to prove De Los Angeles's reputation as an excellent bel canto singer. Her duets with Fischer-Dieskau are absolutely memorable and gorgeous.
The set comes with booklet including full words plus translations, helpful notes on De Los Angeles's concert career and a dozen of beautiful and rare black and white photos. Victoria de Los Angeles's concert career was as prolific as her legendary operatic performances and continued well after her retirement from the operatic stage. This introspective and almost encycopledic release is a real treat and is absolutely recommended. I totally agree with the editor's review who states that the word "fabulous" fails in every respect to fully capture the artistry of the Spanish soprano. Victoria de Los Angeles is definitely one of the most wonderful lyric sopranos of the 20th century and is one of the most heavenly artists to have ever graced the concert scene. The album is a marvelous sampling of this great singer's artistry. Her performances of the French and Spanish composers are something special. The De Falla "Seven Popular Folksongs" are powerful, passionate; the last song, "Jota," raised the hair on the back of my neck.

I was delighted to see Faure's "Claire de lune" on the album, and equally delighted with De Los Angeles' elegant rendition of this work. The only recording of the song I've liked better is from an LP featuring Frederika Von Stade.

As an added bonus, several duets with the great baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau are featured on Disk #4. These include some charming settings of Irish songs by Beethoven, and a gorgeous arrangement of "Let Us Wander" by Henry Purcell. I remember hearing these duets years ago on an LP recording, and it was a pleasure to hear them again.

As a trombonists, sometimes hearing solos over piano accompaniment gets stale. Hearing trombone and organ play Morceau Symphonique is a refreshing change! The organ has many textures as opposed to piano's one clank-clank texture. All the pieces on this set are worth listening to over and over. If you're a trombonist, buy this CD! If you're an organist looking for a different sound to organ accompanying, buy it also! How often do you see a combination like this?

This is a great CD that showcases two instruments that are often overlooked in solo work. The trombone and organ blend remakabley well and Trudel does a supurb job of showing off the instrument.

The Art of the Trombone presents a tremendous display of the capacity that the trombone holds for solo repertoire. Alan Trudel is certainly one of the world's most talented performers of the trombone, and Patrick Wedd's organ accompaniment provides a sound that is seldom heard with trombone. While the literature presented on the cd may lack the diversity provided by cds such as the London Trombone Sound and some of Lindberg's, I am thouroughly satisfied with the outcome that has been achieved, it certainly fulfilled the producer's desire to illustrate the trombone's abilities as an eloquent and expressive instrument. This cd is an excellent representation of the capacities of a solo trombone, and I would recommend it to anyone with the slightest interest in low brass instrumental work.

Some musical interpretations are questionable; others are delightful. Upper register very strident. I found the fast tonguing on the SECOND movement of the Saint-Saens Sonata to be very impressive and not musically objectionable. The altissimo is definitely in-your-face, though; a no-no in my tonal concept.

So many "fast notes" - and no music at all. If you really love music - never listen it. "To play fast" does not mean "to play good", and this one considering the thesis. Worst of all is Saent Saens, the best music i ever heard (and played) - this performance can really make a heart attack. "French sound" on a so light reed? With such a small dynamics? And, finally, what the heck happened with a Poulenc? Why these guys thought Poulenc are they and made "edition" of Sonata? Awful. Learn more, guys. :(

Although Meyer's tone on this particular CD may come near to matching Harold Wright's, his interpretation of the Saint-Saens is replete with musical fallacies, the most obvious of which is the inappropriately brisk tempo. The Saint-Saens particularly vexed me; the first mvt. (Allegretto), in which he hastily stumbled through important phrases such as the d to high d short passage. The tonguing passages were almost stridently quick.
For an excellent recording of the Saint-Saens, I would recommend Janet Hilton. Her tone is just as French-sounding as Meyer's, and possibly more so. Her recording of the Poulenc Sonata is just as amazing.

4 out of 5 stars Some beautiful interpretations here.......2003-10-08

I just bought this CD in the last 6 months and there is some absolutely BEAUTIFUL interpretations of the glorious music. Debussy's Premiere Rhapsodie is gorgeous with just the right amount of vibrato. I'm not sure about his use of vibrato in other parts of the recordings but it works particularly well here.

The Poulenc sonata is also a highlight for me - the second movement sends shivers up my spine!

My only gripe would be the speeds of the Saint Saens sonata. I think he has taken a rather ambitious tempo for the 1st and 2nd movements (particularly the 2nd) which I think loses some of the charm of the individual notes (makes the triplets sound a bit of a farce!) The last movement is crazy but ultimately appropriate I think.

Overall, I think that Paul Meyer's interpretation of the music his country has contributed to the classical genre is admirable and Eric Le Sage does much to complement his playing. I would recommend it as the cd to buy if you're looking for a recording of Debussy's Premiere Rhapsodie - I would've bought the CD for that alone.

This recording is really great. I really love Paul Meyer's playing. The Debussy Rhapsodie is by far the best I've ever heard (including seeing Sabine Meyer do it live!). At times, he tends to go a little too fast (the 4th movement of the Saint-Saens is particularly speedy). He does it well, but there is something to be said for relaxing just a bit... Regardless, the pieces represent a variety of styles, and all are executed very nicely.

        This album is all about atmosphere. There's some excellent musicianship present, some quality composition, and some intriguing lyrics, but in the end this album is about eliciting an emotion. It's music for driving alone, late at night, halfway through a long journey.

        There are no bad songs on this disc, and removing any of them would lessen the album's impact. The first track serves as a moody, sweeping introduction, immediately setting the tone for the rest of the album. The second track introduces the other half of the album's sound, the more ambient half, and it's full speed ahead from there. "Lunar" is spectacular, a bossa nova take on the Crystal Method's "High Roller," if you can imagine that. "Please Hang Up" is absurdly bizzare, but is also achingly beautiful. "Astronaut Down" is the last anthemic blast, and the album winds down with "You Go Now," a perfect echo of everything that's come before. It's hard to imagine an album better suited to a lonely night on the interstate.

        This is not a perfect album, but it's closer than I could come. If you plan on driving through Iowa at about 10 PM in the near future, this is a must-own.

        This album is one of the best that I have purchased in a long time. If you like to "space out" this is the album for you. Kevin Moore did a fantastic job mixing the music with the strange but fitting samples. Definetly a space theme in this cd, but it is worth buying, without a doubt.

        I think this is a path that kevin moore needed to follow since "a change of sesons", you could feel in in "space die vest".

        Being a big Dream Theater fan, I naturally listened to "Dead Air For Radios" when it was released. That was a very good album, and in a way my introduction to electronica. Now some years hence, I am a wannabe one-man musician, and I can say this for sure, "You Go Now" inspires me to write music. The mood, the hooks, the lo-fi drums, the intelligent sampling are all wonderful. Listening to songs like "Lunar" made me go back and listen to "Space Dye Vest" from Dream Theater's "Awake", and it seems like a natural progression, and an indication of perhaps why Kevin left. In the end that decision worked out for everyone as DT got my favorite keyboard player (Jordan Rudess) to handle that chore, while Kevin is now a great writer of intelligent, spacey electronica, and mere mortals like me get to enjoy both.

        I am amazed that "You Go Now" has not received wider acclaim, since this is one of the best albums of the past few years. I can't wait to hear what the OSI project sounds like.

        Kevin once again proves what a musical genious he is. The songs
        are rich in sound, tempo, and lyrics. Buyer beware though, this
        is NO Dream Theater CD. The songs are subtle, yet explode with
        a rich layered sound. I eagerly await new material.
