Toward the end of this exceptional compilation, Lou Donaldson's "Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky (from Now On) struts out of the speakers with a groove so rousing you'll need all weekend to recover. Indeed, Donaldson's track could have been the title of this collection, which highlights just about everyone who ever mudwrestled a Hammond B3 into submission or reached into their trick bag and yanked out the funky funk. Featuring the likes of Jimmy McGriff, "Big" John Patton, and Jimmy Smith (and that's just the first three tracks), this is a can't-miss collection. If these 12 tracks don't get your party started, it's time to look for new friends. --S. Duda

5 out of 5 stars The Quintet at it's peak.......2007-01-13

Recorded live in the Capital studios with a lively audience in 1967, this disc features Cannonball in fine fine form with superb musicians surrounding him. Of particular note is the contribution by his brother Nat Adderly on cornet and Joe Zawinul on accoustic and electric piano. This is high energy jazz with a funky swinging feel. "Mini Mama" is a uptempo burner than sears a vicious groove like many other tracks. There is a lot of talk in the introductions of the songs that are usually informative. Take for example, the introduction to the title track, "Why Am I Treated So Bad" where Cannoball informs us that it was written by Robuck Staples, the leader and patriarch of the Staple Singers. It is a groovy "soft," funky number that gets you swaying to the rhythm. It is a rather catching and infectious tune that still sounds good after all these years. A song written by Nat Adderly is entitled "The Other Side " and written to "appease the sentiments of the extraordinary hippie." It is a hard driving number that allows for nice improvisation by the band; each takes a cue for a solo to extend the interplay. "The Girl Next Door" features a muted horn for that cool jazz swing reminiscent of Miles with nice sax work by Cannonball. An underrated player that was a giant behind the horn, Cannonball Adderly created melodic jazz that was funky and smooth at once. There is plenty of bang for the buck as the CD is one hour long. Recommended as a nice addition to any jazz collection.

4 out of 5 stars Cannonball Blasts!.......2006-07-30

Capitol Records' recent spate of Cannonball Adderley reissues is impressively augmented by this collection, recorded in March and July of 1967. With "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" high on the pop charts, Cannonball took his sizzling quintet - with little brother Nat on cornet, Joe Zawinul on keyboards, Victor Gaskin on bass and Roy McCurdy at the skins - into Capitol's Los Angeles studios for another "live" set blending blues, funk and pop elements into the more classicist jazz of which they'd long since become acknowledged masters. The results are impressive indeed, with the Adderleys blowing at peak strength (especially on "I'm On My Way" and "The Other Side") while Zawinul - heard here on both acoustic and electric piano - dominates the title track and an extended rendition of "The Girl Next Door." One need only hear a single Cannonball Adderley album from this era to understand why he and his band commanded such respect from both critics and fans; here's hoping Capitol will see fit to keep them coming nevertheless.

5 out of 5 stars When Malindy Sings.......2006-06-06

I actually bought this about 5 years ago, but just recently sat down and listened to it CAREFULLY all the way through. My assessment is that it's a great introduction to the category of "Soul Jazz"-- a category that is often overlooked by mainstream listeners in a genre of music that is not mainstream itself. One song that made the whole CD worth buying is "When Malindy Sings" by Freddie Roach. (It seems like I've heard this song several times but just never knew who wrote it.) Because the cross section of artists is significant, it could also serve as an introduction to a specific artist.

4 out of 5 stars BLUE FUNK.......2006-02-16

"So Blue, So Funky" is a straight re-issue of a 1991 Blue Note compilation titled "BLUE FUNK". (The cover and the title are different, but the track listing is the same.)

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not the best compilation around.......2002-11-19

There are good tracks on this compilation, especially Jimmy McGriff's AWESOME 'All About My Girl', Lou Donaldson's 'Everything I Do Goin' Be Funky', and Grant Green 'Ain't It Funky'. However, the other tracks do not fare that well in comparison. The overall album is good, but could be far better knowing all the gems that Blue Note treasures in its vaults.
Anyway, the title is right: It is a very funky album and worth checking out if you don't have any of the songs above mentioned.

4 out of 5 stars Blue note is at it again!.......2002-06-26

Blue Note records comes up with another solid compilation of break-beat jazz ripe for the sampling. Featuring some of the sickest keyboard players soloing over funky rhythms, this album will whet your appetite for more of the things Blue Note seems to do so well.

No wonder it's the most sampled label in the world.

I picked this album up after I'd listened to their 4-disc set of "Blue Break Beats" and was still hungry for more. I was completely satisfied.

5 out of 5 stars RARE BUT ESSENTIAL B-3 GROOVES, A GREAT STARTING POINT !.......2000-05-22

If you're just getting into the classic B-3 organ combo sound, or have been into it for sometime, but want to get your hands on some great tracks which have fallen out of print, this is THE COLLECTION. And probably something very different than you're used to hearing. - - I mean, its the difference between Chris's Steak and greasy hot barbeque at your favorite soul food joint. Both are good, but I guarentee you, sometimes its best to have that hot sauce dripping down your chin with a bit of Bro' McDuff blaring on the juke box (though you might not exactly impress your date... especially after you pop a button off your suit get that stuff all over your shirt.)

This CD features the groovy soulful side of the Blue Note organ combo sound, the highligh of which are several grooves that got deep down in the vaults. Worth the purchase alone is BOOP BOP BING BASH, from an out of print Blue Note CD featuring Billy Gardner on organ and featuring George Braithe, a frequent John Patton/Ben Dixon Grant Green sideman. John Patton's Fat Judy really has that early '60s B-3 combo juke box feel. Grant Green tears the roof off on AIN'T IT FUNKY NOW with a very James Brown feel.

After you hear this, check out the artists themselves... Freddie Roach, Babyface Wilette, Big John Patton and Grant Green (Blues for Lou !) especially...

This "Heroes of The Hammond" album is part of a well packaged and economical series simply titled "the blue series". What you get here is 11 songs that show off the wonderful sounds of the jazzy hammond b-3. I hadn't heard that much soul jazz before this purchase, and it served as an excellent starting point for me. I would recomend it to anyone looking for a good place to start if they are at all interested in soul jazz, or even fans of the hammond sound.
