Blues for the Red Sun is the finest album by short-lived rock gods Kyuss. With guitars tuned way down and amps turned way up, Kyuss's deafening assault switches from light to hammering in a blink on some tracks ("Thumb," "Thong Song"), while slowly building on others ("Freedom Run"). They achieve full rock bliss when they're relentless. By updating Black Sabbath from the perspective of psychedelic jammers out of the Arizona desert, Kyuss established the blueprint for the entire stoner rock movement with this 1992 release. Even its makers never matched it, let alone beat it. --Robert Burrow

how could any album that includes an angry song about lighter burning be bad? all i have to say. PERIOD...

4 out of 5 stars Rock.......2007-06-09

It's a pretty natural inclination to want to categorize and disseminate styles into little boxes. I mean, hell, would you really want to say that The Beatles and Good Charlotte are in the same category?

But let's look at the other side of that same coin--ARE The Beatles and Good Charlotte in the same category? Is the definition of 'classic rock' versus 'pop punk' really just the distinction of quality versus lame-osity, reinvention and creativity versus cashing in on spiky hair? Could it really be that the pavers of possibility in rock can really sit in the same cordoned room with the posers with paychecks?

Kyuss, believe it or not, makes me think that the possibility is just that.

Look at the other reviews and tags that question the category of this band. Grunge? Metal? Stoner rock?

Man, let's just call this rock. Heavy rock, the rock of Wine Cooler Blowout by J.J. Paradise Players' Club and Trance States in Tongues by Zen Guerrilla. Rock that may make you shake your booty some, but definitely gets you in the mood to score. Rock that lets you bob around the room , throw some hair (if you have any), or just veg out and let whatever it is that's got its claws into your brain have free reign. From driving rockers like "Green Machine" to bassy meditations like "Mondo Generation," you'll know where Queens of the Stone Age came from and why the brilliant opening of Songs for the Deaf ("You're listening to KLN. Clone Radio - We play the songs that sound more like everyone else, than anyone else.") is such stinging satire, because rock IS a category as broad as the ocean these guys made ripple with their heavy sounds, and this album is a Kyuss classic--a great spot to start, if you're only starting.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Best.......2007-01-06

Kyuss does have a greatest hits album, and it's solid, but it doesn't hold a torch to Blues for the Red Sun. Kyuss has always been pegged as a "jam band," but that doesn't really do them justice. How many riff bands invent a new genre of music?
Kyuss are the original stoners, and this album is a fan favourite for good reason. John Garcia, one of metal's most tragically unsung heroes, just wails on this record. Unlike today's whiny, sobbing emo and nu- metal- types, Jon Garcia can SING. He's got an almost definitive rock and roll voice.
Of course Josh Homme on guitar and backup vocals is a big part of why Kyuss rock- he's the Midas of heavy metal music. But this record is really propelled by Garcia on vocals. Check him out on Danko Jones's new record, Sleep Is the Enemy. The man's a genius!

3 out of 5 stars Not Quite the Real Thing.......2006-09-28

Kyuss are pretty good, and this is their best album, but if you want to hear some real, punishingly heavy, unbelievably distorted acid-rock you have to hear the double guitar attack of the Gibbons brothers. And that means you have to go to Bardo Pond on this site and listen to the samples of "Tommy Gun Angel" or "Flux" on the album Lapsed. All it will take is 30 seconds of each to hear what's missing here. Even if you're bugged that I seem to be dissing your band, give the Pond a listen anyway.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest hard rock/heavy metal album of all time.......2006-08-16

Why this is the greatest heavy metal or hard rock album ever released, bar none:

1. Impeccable musicianship. I defy you to name one band with a better rhythm section than Nick Oliveri and Brant Bjork.

2. Gargantuan riffs. Kyuss is twice is ambitious as Black Sabbath and just as gifted when it comes to crafting minor key hooks.

3. Incredible composition. Ominous silence, dramatic buildups, explosive thrash carnage and spaced out jam sessions are deployed with precision to evoke the emotional responses that the listener needs to feel he is completely immersed in an all consuming psychic (and psychedelic!) journey.

Furthermore, every song is informed by the previous and subsequent songs. As a result, the entire album plays as an organic whole, yet does not grow monotonous.

4. A signature sound. Tune the guitars down to C. Play them out of bass amps. Add plenty of fuzz and reverb. Its brilliant. The sound is huge. It just coarses through you like nothing else.

5. Great attitude. John Garcia's manly, laid back megalomania is just plain fun. And his coarse snarl adds a very complementary rough edge to the impeccably precise arrangements crafted by Homme, Oliveri and Bjork. Listening to Kyuss makes you feel like you're king of the world and you just don't give a...

This is the best album ever. I hope you buy it and "get it" the way I do, because it has really opened my mind to how truly inspired a rock band can be. I literally see music differently than I did before I bought this album.

5 out of 5 stars Uplifting.......2007-07-01

Theres never a dull moment on this CD. Throughout the entire 61 minutes of this CD you will feel happy, sad, excited, angry, entergetic...at least I did. I would definently recomend this CD over the soundless dawn, though, that CD is really good. The Red Sparowes pushed the envelope with this one. Awesome!!!

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Post-Rock.......2007-06-08

I'll just start by saying that this album is indescribably better than At The Soundless Dawn, which didn't showcase any of the fascinating melodies that make this album so great.

All the reviews below describe this very well, but i just wanted to say how good this album really is. It was the first post-rock album i ever bought, because id read good reviews and i liked the front cover, and it was the best surprise ive ever had from an album.

Every song has its on melodic buildup, emotional climax and sense of complacency. And that doesn't mean the songs all sound the same, really its the opposite. The tracks each revolve around a singular melody or feel, and they all are sprawling epics, perfectly played, produced and most of all written.

The best songs are: Like the Howling Glory..., Annhilate the Sparrow... and And By Our Hand...

The best Post-Rock, and one of the greatest albums ever. 5 Stars.

5 out of 5 stars Super emotional, incredibly epic and grand, instrumental rock of the highest order........2006-11-14

Full length number two from epic post rock soundscapers the Red Sparowes. Sharing members with Isis, these guys tread similar sonic ground, although where Isis take their sound in a decidedly sludgy more metallic direction, The Sparowes move in their own, toward a much mathier, almost prog rock sound. Each track is massive in scope and composition, lengthy almost krautrock grooves lead into spacey ambience which lead into heavy crunchy "choruses". Riffs repeat and loop and slowly transform, multiple guitars weave in and out of the minor key melodies, creating dense harmonies, and strange rhythmic counterpoints to the motorik rhythms.

Red Sparowes are another band where it's hard to pinpoint just exactly what it is that makes them sound different or special, but that something is most definitely there. Sure it's slightly metallic, it's most definitely math rock or post rock. It's big and brooding, minor key and slightly melancholy, the guitars are big and thick, the drums simple but propulsive, but each one of those parts is transformed by the way they are assembled, the arrangements, the songwriting, imbue each of those elements with extra emotion, extra power. Which makes the heavy parts that much more riffage, the ambient parts that much more spacey and drifty, the sad parts that much darker. Obviously if you're into Isis and Aereogramme and Mogwai and all of that sort of stuff you'll for sure love this. But even folks who haven't been blown away by those bands should check these guys out. Super emotional, incredibly epic and grand, instrumental rock of the highest order. Like a more metallized Sigur Ros or like a dreamier dronier, WAY less metal Neurosis.

5 out of 5 stars read the first review.......2006-11-03

The first reviewer down below did a great job at describing why this album is so good. If I may just paraphrase a few things and cut right to the chase.

1. This album is incredible

2. It is better than At The Soundless Dawn

3. The variety and flow in each track is mesmerizing and haunting

4. Every instrument has the perfect mix

5. The album artwork is great

6. This is one of the best instrumentatl post-rock albums.

7. Ever.

Do yourself a favor, read the first review if you need more proof. The sound samples wont do you any good as each song is around 7-8 minutes long and has far too much depth for a 30 second sample. Then go out and buy this album and set aside some time to listen to it...Maybe clean you room, or draw, or paint, or sit on the couch with the lights turned low and prepare to be taken away by the music. This album is an escape from wherever you are at the moment. A sonic tour de force.

5 out of 5 stars The Great Leap Forward.......2006-11-02

Very atmospheric music, setting you in places only they, the band, could have thought of. Every song has its own sound, and every sound it resonates puts me through incredible states of emotion and nostalgia. The quiet plucking of the guitar has never sounded so beautiful, so well executed. Their best.

4 out of 5 stars Voices Full of Emotion.......2005-12-19

Once you hear this chorus...whether under the Red Army Choir or Soviet Army Choir banner...you will be addicted. I certainly am. This is not the best disc available on Amazon, but it is unique in that it showcases all Russian songs (since the chorus was a "national" choir, recordings done in London, Paris, etc. frequently contain songs from other countries). And while there may be better and more professional recordings, of this choir and more professional bands, these soldiers succeed in achieving a wide range of color with their vocal talent on this recording. A great bargain.

2 out of 5 stars Sound quality.......2004-07-06

The songs that are chosen on this CD are excellent. The problem, the sound recording is not great. It is clear, but when the choir sings in a low tone, it is simply cannot be heard.

4 out of 5 stars A Trip to Soviet Russia.......2004-03-18

In the 1970's, it seemed that defectors from the USSR made headlines in American newspapers every day. When a dancer defected, it was always believed that artistic freedom was the cause. When writers defected, it was due to the controversy surrounding their works. Athletes were usually viewed as wanting a taste of the good life, but when the Red Army Choir defected, it was a sweet victory for the west. These people were the symbol of all the USSR stood for and sang anthems praising the Soviets, yet they longed for freedom. We loved it when they defected.

Even though many of the songs performed by the ensemble praised the virtues of the Soviet Union, western audiences love the group. No it was not due to be soft on Communism. The group had a sound that was addictive and possessed terrific musical gifts, all of which can be found in this recording.

Listening to this recording is almost nostalgic now that the Soviet Union is no longer, but the recording has a certain appeal. It includes all the favorites including Meadowlands (Polyushku pole), Dark Eyes, Moscow Nights, and the Volga Boatman's Song, probably the best piece on the recording. The ensemble performs well together, the band give the music a distinct sound, and while the soloists are not perfect, the imperfections somehow seem appropriate.

There are more expensive recordings by this ensemble, but this budget CD is not just well worth the price, it is actually one of the best available.

4 out of 5 stars Good Value.......2003-11-03

Considering the number of classic songs and the price, you really can't go wrong here. like another poster, i was a bit dissapointed by some very low music in some selections. but for the most part, the quality is quite good and the music is a very nice way to begin to understand and learn about the Russian people.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not perfect.......2003-01-19

This is a very good CD, and the music really captures the power and total authority of the Soviet state. It is very moving music on one hand, and also really reflects the situation of the Russian workingmen living under this tyranny. This CD would get 5 stars, but there are a few portions where the sound is so soft that it cannot be heard, such as at the beginning of the sixth track. This is the only problem with the CD worth noting, the CD is done by the Red Army choir, and the songs are virtually all made of of the huge band & choir, Soviet power music that we all have come to know and love. I do recommend this CD strongly.

Good film music should be seen and not heard--that is, it's usually there for background, to reinforce what you're seeing, not to draw attention to itself. So why listen to it? Often that's a mystery, but the items in this collection seem to have been selected because they are interesting music (Prokofiev, Copland, Bernstein) or because they are so familiar that they bring back memories of favorite movies (Laura, High Noon, Star Wars). Like much movie music, a lot of these items are sentimental and overblown, even the more famous ones. (Those famous screaming strings in Psycho can sound silly without the onscreen action.) But if you want one movie-music CD in your collection, this may be the one to have. --Leslie Gerber

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Worth it for "Conquest" alone.......2005-09-12

The stirring martial music from the movie "Captain from Castille" ("Conquest") is on this album and so far as I know it's the only CD you'll find it on. But other tracks are great also, including the "Parade of the Charioteers" from "Ben Hur," the theme from "The Magnificent Seven," and "The Imperial March" from Star Wars.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT COMPILATION!.......2005-06-05

I've come to appreciate soundtracks more and more. This compilation progresses chronologically through 60 years of film music, starting with 1939's "The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood", and ending with "Titanic". It encompasses a huge range of styles. Along with the usual suspects - music from "Ben-Hur", "The Magnificent 7", "Star Wars", et al, there are a few real sleepers, like John Barry's medieval-flavored theme to "The Lion in Winter", or Leonard Roseman's lyrical "East of Eden". Blessedly, most of the tracks are original recordings, conducted by the composers, among them Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland. Only those of us burned by tinny, tacky, sacriligiously rearranged retreads on obscure labels can appreciate this.

There are a few notable omissions. The prolific Randy Newman isn't represented, though Uncle Alfred is. And NO Ennio Morricone? - incredible! Presumably, this has more to do with Sony's current copyrights and contracts than the relative merits of the composers. And it's fine to have John Williams included twice, but why two pieces from "Star Wars"? Why not the theme from "Jaws", for instance? Or "Sugarland Express", for a really unexpected treat? But these are minor quibbles. And for whatever it's lacking, there's no fluff substituted. This is real music from fine craftsmen, which sometimes attains art. A great intro to the form, and wonderful just to listen to. I bought it used - one of my best deals ever!

3 out of 5 stars So So Compilation.......2002-01-14

My major interest in this CD was in the selection entitled "Robin Hood And His Merry Men" (duration: 4 min, 28 sec), conducted by John Williams, and performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. It turns out that this is a re-issue of the track from Sony Classical SK 62788, 1997. Surprisingly, this performance is poky, ponderous, and prodding. The conducting is, well, somnambulistic. Miking/mixing/processing yields a sonic brick deficient in instrumental nuances while sounding like way too many musicians were shoe horned into the recording studio. As for the rest of the tracks, it's hard to believe, but Silva America offers better compilations! Best to skip this one.

5 out of 5 stars Deserves more than five stars.......2000-06-23

I have several discs of film music, and this one if by far the best. As one of the previous reviewers noted, there are many peices absent that could have been included here, but I don't see how anyone could be completely satisfied with any compilation that fit on just one disc.

The performances here are crisp and clear, and include a good selection of both old and new, ranging from traditional film favorites like the Star Wars theme, to less common selections like the screeching strings from Psycho (at least, I think they're less common, but I could be wrong). And I could listen to the Magnificent Seven theme over and over.

Anyway, this is a great disc for almost anyone. If you're looking for one thing in particular, find that film's soundtrack, but otherwise, this is a fantastic disc, and one of my favorites!

4 out of 5 stars Music In Film (NPR Milestones of the Millennium.......2000-05-02

Great CD;the music is crystal clear with an excellent variety demonstrating the wide variety of musical talents in Hollywood. Liner notes are also most interesting, explaining some of the history behind the cuts and pointing out differences in the composers styles...as with John Barry. His style ranges from "the Lion in Winter" bold dramatic soundtrack to the exquisitley tender "Dances with Wolves" theme music. A CD to enjoy over and over

You wouldn't know it to look at her, but bluegrass firebrand Mollie O'Brien has a dirt road voice--robust and soulful, not remotely high and lonesome. Big Red Sun, a collection of blues and country-blues tunes, should surprise those who've followed her. The band, paced by the bubbly electric and slide work of Nick Forster, lays down steady folk blues, and even dabbles in Cajun and tough Magic Sam soul. The most striking performance, Steve Goodman's "Looking For Trouble," features just acoustic guitar, accordion, and O'Brien's slow- burning voice. The pieces are in place for a great interpretive work-- including a sumptuous version of Lucinda Williams's "Big Red Sun Blues" plus John Hiatt and Randy Newman covers--but the result is closer to an unexceptional Bonnie Raitt offering. Good, but not quite a revelation. --Roy Francis Kasten

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Soulful blues, folk, and pop.......2002-12-02

Evidently, other fans know Mollie O'Brien from her bluegrass collaborations with her brother Tim. I bought this CD on a whim after hearing her sing on Garrison Keilor's Prairie Home Companion. She has good range, and her voice is strong, smooth, and forceful. I chose this album because I knew some of the songs by other artists and some of the reviews here on Amazon. None are original songs, but a few are traditionals arranged by O'Brien. She has picked a wonderful set of underappreciated gems written by some of our most talented songwriters. Aside from the wonderful recordings, I love the reminders about some of my musical favorites. These are great songs with great lyrics, performed wonderfully by O'Brien and her backing musicians.

The first song, "In my girlish days" is a 20s era blues piece written by Memphis Minnie, which let me know right away that I was going to love the album. It's a simple, foot-tapping acoustic arrangement featuring guitar and harmonica. Maria Muldaur covered it recently on "Richland Woman Blues," which I love. I won't try to choose which version I prefer.

A few more songs just tear me up.
On "No ash will burn," O'Brien sustains notes and bends them like a methodical blues guitarist. The arrangement features a simple, soulful electric lead guitar, with bass and drums.

"Love like blood" (by John Hiatt) and "Big Red Sun Blues" (by Lucinda Williams)are hear-wrenching songs about love (as deep as it gets) and love gone stale that O'Brien belts out smoothly, clearly, and convincingly. On "Love Like Blood," she has the strength and conviction of Janis Joplin without the rough edges. I don't know much of Hiatt's work, but look for the tribute album "Rolling into Memphis" which got remaindered and is worth far more than the discount price.
"Big red sun blues" is softer, sadder, with vocal character described above ("no ash will burn") and a lovely bluesy accordian in its arrangement. Williams is someone whose songwriting I love, but whose vocals I just can't listen to. It's always good to find someone else recording her songs.

"Looking for trouble" is a Steve Goodman song from one of my favorite albums (Jessie's Jig), though I never paid this song much attention. Goodman sang it halfway tongue in cheek, but O'Brien sings it like a near tragedy and grabs your attention. It is pretty, simple, with perfect acoustic guitar arrangement and haunting background Hammond B3 organ. Be careful about drinking and lying - they'll suck you in! And fall in love? You never knew what sucked-in meant!

"Gambling man" is a warning about loving someone beyond even his mother's help. Another simple but lovely blues acoustic guitar arrangement.

A few other songs are folksy blues toe-tappers ("Eleezah," by John Magnie; "Little Baby," by Willie Dixon; "Brown-eyed handsome man," by Chuck Berry; "No hidin' place," trad. gospel). These don't catch me the way the others do, but that's just me.

The album closes out with "Rollin" by Randy Newman. A soft, easy-going reminder that whatever troubles we've had, we can let ourselves be. Another acoustic number. I don't know if Randy Newman sings this with his TM sarcasm, but O'Brien sings it in complete sincerity.

"never thought I'd make it but I always knew, somehow, that I'm all right now . . . rollin, rolling, I'm rollin, I ain't gonna worry no more. . . . "

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful mix of guitar and vocals.......2001-07-26

One of the first CDs I've listened to and loved every track! Great variety of songs from Mollie and her band, with crystal clear vocals alternating with clever guitar patterns. My favourite tracks - Looking for Trouble and No Ash Will Burn.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible!.......2000-03-17

This is one CD thats gets our whole family up and DANCING! We all just love it! Mollie's voice is unbelievably smooth and beautiful. Track after track will have you up and dancing! This is one of those rare CDs that is solid from start to finish. WOW!

5 out of 5 stars Mollie, Mollie, I love you.......2000-02-08

Truly a briliant recording! "Big Red Sun" comes very close both in singing quality and song selection to Linda Ronstadt's 1974 "Heart Like a Wheel." To me, that's about as good as it gets.

5 out of 5 stars First Rate.......1999-01-05

I eschew any impartiality when it comes to Mollie O'Brien. She is a fantastic singer and musician. I enjoyed this disc immensely.

5 out of 5 stars Fine performances of some of the very oldest Western music.......2005-12-08

'Magister Leoninus Sacred Music from 12th Century Paris' by Red Byrd, John Potter, Richard Wistreich and the Capella Amsterdam is some of the very earliest 'old music' I have heard recorded anywhere. From the point of view of a non-musicologist who just happens to like old liturgical music, I recommend this to all people with similar interests.

My only disappointment is that the recording is not that of an entire mass, but of several pieces of masses from the important Christian festival days, most especially Christmas and Easter.

As usual, the Hyperion package and recording quality is first rate. The age, quality of the performance, and quality of the recording alone should make this an important recording for your colleciton.

5 out of 5 stars Strangely compelling.......2001-01-07

The earliest sacred polyphonic music evolved from plainchant, in the hands of composers like Magister Leoninus. His works as recorded on this disc show how that evolution took place: for a setting of a given text, sections of unison plainchant were interspersed with writing for two voices, based largely on the melodic contours of the plainchant - in other words, re-composition took place.

The programme recorded here features some of Magister Leoninus' finest and most significant works, including "Alleluya. Non vos relinquam orphanos," "Alleluya. Pascha nostrum immolatus est" and "Viderunt omnes terre" - music with a key role in the liturgy at major festivals of the church's year. These particular motets could even be considered as the Christmas and Easter carols of their day: listen to them long enough and they will prove just as irresistable as their familiar modern counterparts.

Part of that irresistability is due to the excellent performances on this disc. Red Byrd, consisting here of its founders John Potter and Richard Wistreich, sings the polyphonic music whilst the Cappella Amsterdam provide the plainchant. Their performance methods show clear signs of research; listening to it, I cannot help but imagine that this is what the music really sounded like when it was first performed. The Amsterdam singers give an exemplary demonstration of how plainchant should be sung: flowing from note to note almost like liquid, clearly enunciated, perfectly in tune and making something out of every word and sound (as though meditating on it). And Red Byrd does even better - John Potter is no stranger to this music, having recorded twelfth century material for ECM and Hyperion with the Hilliard Ensemble (his intonation at the very opening "Alleluya" is a spine-tingling and unforgettable sound); Richard Wistreich supports him with a rich baritone voice and demonstrates remarkable breath control in sustaining the underlying chant. Together, their balance is faultless, their embellishments are exquisite, their phrasing and attention to musical detail is scintillating. To cap it all, the recording venue (not revealed on the box but definitely somewhere in Amsterdam) provides some generous acoustics, completing this vivid aural impression of twelfth century polyphony at its simplest and best.

Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars A voice that will be around for years to come.......2006-07-22

I was so haunted by the music on this cd for months. In particular the murder ballad "What put the blood"? a song that is a traditional song, she learned from Galway singer, Tony Small and given a very contemporary sound by her partner Donogh Hennessey, ex Lúnasá, that just struck me between the ears and went around and around in my head. Even her own songs are excellent and sound like they could have been written years ago.... That's a huge compliment, because She has such a unique sound, I doubt there are many could come close to her qualities.
A real feel for the old songs, and even an unaccompanied version of The Boys of Barr na Sráide, that will knock your sonic socks off. Trust me, this girl is here to stay and her future cds will be just as great.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting..........2004-11-04

An interesting debut from County Kerry's Pauline Scanlon. I especially liked her mix of keyboards, programming, tradition, and some of her own lyrics. If you like a unique voice (think a little of 10,000 Maniac's female lead, but Irish), good and unusual (yet familiar) music, then give this one a go.

EXCELLENT ALBUM - GREAT VOCAL AND GREAT ROCK !!!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO ALL !!!

4 out of 5 stars Overlooked hard rock album.......2007-03-17

Sun Red Sun is probably most noteworthy for featuring the late, great Ray Gillen (ex Black Sabbath, Badlands) on vocals, but the band also featured a revolving door of musicians, including members of Ozzy, Rainbow, Savatage, Alice in Chains, Yngwie and more.

Sun Red Sun's self-titled 1995 debut album was an unapologetically hard rock/metal effort at a time when metal was a dirty word. You won't find any grungy alterna-rock here, but you won't see the excesses and self-parody that plagued so many early 90's "metal" bands either. This is an extremely solid album featuring well-written songs, strong musicianship, and powerful vocals. It could have been a bit longer (the album clocks in at just 8 tracks and 29 minutes), but the material that is there is undeniably strong.

Sun Red Sun is an album that should have appealed to a large group of hard rock and metal fans, but unfortunately it went largely unnoticed. At such a low price though, those of us who may have overlooked it now have a chance to correct that oversight.

NOTE: Sun Red Sun was reissued in 1998. The newer version features three bonus tracks.

NOTE 2: You can get this album, a follow up album called Lost Tracks, and the Ray Gillen memorial tribute (which features previously unreleased Sun Red Sun tracks), in a nifty 3-disc set called Sun Set. It's available for next to nothing, and well worth checking out.

4 out of 5 stars SUN RED SUN ROCKS!!!!!.......2002-12-14

Sun Red Sun is awsome!!!! It is a great straight up hard rock/ metal album featuring some great artist such as the late, great, RAY GILLEN. If you like your metal raw and old school then GET THIS ALBUM!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Great gems from musicals that dissapeared.......2004-11-30

Songs from 1987's "Smile" make this well worth the price. The previously unreleased material from the late, great Howard Ashman deserves to have it's moment in the spotlight.

Also, there's Judy Kuhn's beautiful performance on "Starfish", Christine Baranski's vampy turn on "Sherry".

Finally, there's" New Words" from "One, Two, Three, Four, Five". This show has been restaged, by small theatre groups, under the title "History Loves Company". "New Words" is by far the best number of this show and Liz Callaway's voice fills with love as she sings this lullaby.

For a consummate musical theatre fan who's heard it all, this disc is a refreshing look at what has been lost over the years.

3 out of 5 stars some gold mixed with dross.......2003-12-21

Some of these songs desrve to be unsung. But then you get a showstopper like Sherry and you wonder how could this show have flopped? That number alone makes this cd worth purchasing.I also enjoyed Marvin Hamlisch's toe tapping title song - Smile. There are also a few other lovely melodies which makes this cd a nice addition to a Broadway collection.

3 out of 5 stars Where did they get these songs? Not from the movie..........2004-09-17

The motion picture sountrack to Holiday in the Sun was a colossal dissapointment. I bought the cd expecting to hear all of the great tunes from the film, but upon listening to it I was instead surprised with songs NOT in the film. I'm not sure where the record company got half of the album- obviously not from the movie. For instance, if you like the version of 'Island in the Sun' that is in the movie, you would be better off downloading it online, as the version in the movie is by Weezer and is not on the album (shocker!). And if you liked all of the girl tunes by Superchic(k) that were in the movie, you will really be dissapointed, because there is not one song on the album by the band (even though there are at least 3 songs by Superchic(k) in the movie)! I ended up buying Superchic(k)'s Karaoke Superstars because not only does it have all of the Superchic(k) songs from the movie, it also has remixes of those same songs.

I gave the album three stars because while I was irritated that many of the songs from the movie weren't on it, it still had a few from the movie, and over all the album is pretty good.

4 out of 5 stars HOLIDAY IN THE SUN.......2003-11-13

I am not so sure about the music in this CD, but I think it might be quite good.

5 out of 5 stars Yea!.......2002-08-02

This is my favorite CD of all time. I've never listened to it, but I love the cover. I wish I was 25 years younger so I might have a chance with one or both of them. OH YEA!

5 out of 5 stars The Olsen twins have done it again!.......2002-03-12

Kudos again to Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen! This CD is sophisticated, trendy and ultra-hip, like their other recent CDs, movies, and clothing line. It is perfect for my 8-year-old...not babyish, but not sleazy like a lot of music targeted at her age group or preteens. The overall message of the songs is: GIRL POWER! Parents, you will actually be able to listen to this again and again without wanting to retch! Something you and your kids can listen to together. This mom, 8- and 4-year old daughters recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Empty Trash!!!!!.......2002-01-14

I really liked, "Island In the Sun" "Shades of Yesterday" and "Can't Get You Out of My Head" Empty Trash was a great selection for this soundtrack!!!!
