Album Description

Produced in conjunction with the 'Empires of Mystery' Cultural exhibition, this CD represents an exotic, mystical journey through the Andes. These songs are timeless and beautiful and begin with birdsong and the whistle of the wind in the trees...

5 out of 5 stars Haunting_Beauty.......2005-02-08

Andean Music is, to the American Apple-Pie rock-N-roll ear, an awakening. Much of it is played on what seems to be a guitar with a special sound--except that it is the Charango---and the Charanguista(s) on this album are highly talented. Our familiarity with guitar solos draws us to this alternative "guitar"--and opens us up to a whole new musical world.

No Andean music is complete without the Zamponia and the Kena---pan-pipe and end-blown flute respectively--and there is some superb playing on this album. These istruments, in my opinion, when well played, rival the expression of the best wooden flutes of Europe.

And a bonus is the fiddle playing and singing--so that while not a comprehensive anthology of traditional Andean sound, it is a cross-section which, at the bargain CD price, makes it an absolute must-have.

4 out of 5 stars Modern Meets Ancient.......2004-11-17

Not a true representation of Peru's many musical styles, perhaps; but a beautiful recording by a very talented group of musicians, with touches of the modern meeting the ancient - especially noticeable in the lovely song 'Mi Cambio' composed by Cesar Villalobos.

5 out of 5 stars Did we listen to the same disc?.......2003-06-10

My view of Conjunction is 180 degrees from that of the previous reviewer. So much so, that I wonder if perhaps he somehow got the wrong disc in his CD jewelbox.

Another, albeit remote, possibility exists. Maybe he just didn't attend to the proceedings with sufficient acumen. .

One thing that immediately impressed me about this very fine outing is the glorious range of tonal coloration, coming brilliantly to the fore on "Metamorphic," an outing which features vibes, clarinet, trombone, electric guitar, electric bass, and drums all marvelously interacting together--perhaps the only recorded instance of this exact soundscape. Another thing that impressed me is the range and variety of compositions, especially for an ostensibly funk outing. The two primarily responsible, saxist Jed Levy and vibesman Marc Wagnon, each write fine jazz tunes that prove to be wonderful vehicles for both improvisation and ensemble playing. Indeed, that may be part of the problem here: this is certainly more a modern-minded jazz outing than a straight funk-fest. There are really only three funk numbers at all ("Draconian Devonian," "Light Step," and "The Unknown Shuffle") and these are hardly typical of the genre. Compositionally, it shares territory much more akin to Billy Hart's brilliant jazz/fusion outings of the mid-late nineties, Amethyst and Oceans of Time. Not surprisingly, all feature perhaps the most remarkable player of the bunch, Dave "Fuze" Fiuczynski, on guitar.

What can be said about this incredible electric guitarist except that he's certainly an acquired taste? Playing on eight of the ten selections, he brings killer chops, masterful comping, mature concepts, and a loopy logic that keeps all involved always on their toes. Take for instance his work on the title cut. His solo is really in three parts. It starts out conventionally enough but after a killer bass solo by the inimitable Paul Jackson and a startling but brief solo by Marc Wagnon on vibes, he comes back with the full monty--all over his ax with a deft runs and bent strings--and finishes with another brilliant but lightly tossed off short burst of guitar wizardry. Or check out his wah-wah comping on "Long Shot"--some of the finest on record. Or his brilliant solo on "Gus" where he displays more nimble axmanship, and where Marc Wanon contributes quite a stunning solo himself on midi-vibes, followed by Mike Clark's only extended solo outing (and quite stunning it is, as well).

I can't say enough about the playing on this disc, especially Marc Wagnon on vibes. He plays his instrument like no one else, although sometimes he brings to mind Kahn Jamal, with his deep swing and amazing legato approach. Paul Jackson just amazes on electric bass. Eschewing annoying slap techniques (all too common on funk outings), he instead goes for agility and tonal mastery, and his handful of solos swing their butts off. For me, this is as accomplished as I've ever heard Mike Clark. Yes, he's more nuanced than typically, but that's what's called for here. And believe me, he's all over his kit with tasty fills, rim shots, polyrhythms, sprung rhythms, faux rhythms, and every other way to play with time signatures.

Perhaps the biggest problem with this outing is it's not obvious who the audience is. Certainly not a typical funk outing (indeed, it would probably alienate most fans of that genre), nor really fusion (at least not of the Rippingtons or even Pat Metheny variety), not pure acoustic jazz--it just isn't easily pigeon-holed. And for me that--coupled with the above mentioned virtues--is what makes this such a happening disc. A neglected masterpiece.

2 out of 5 stars Not The Best Example of Clark's Immense Talent.......2003-04-24

I love Mike Clark's drumming. This CD does NOT represent his finest work. I was shocked when I listened to this CD the first time (I doubt there will be a second listening) as to how uneven and, at times, amateurish Clark and his sidemen sound. For a more flattering example of Mike Clark's drumming as band leader I recommend: "The Funk Stops Here", "Give the Drummer Some", "Summertime" and "Actual Proof" or Herbie Hancock's "Thrust, as well as "Straight From the Gate", "Survival of the Fittest" and "Return of the Headhunters" by the Headhunters.

          Product Description

Snatches of imagination, dreams and ethereal quarkiness are captured in this collection of songs and solo guitar works. Sparse production is all that is needed because of the "Dazzeling guitar work"...(Boston Globe) careful and conscise poetic lyrics presented with a rich baritone.

5 out of 5 stars One of Folk's Best Kept Secrets.......2006-06-10

I first came across Raymond Gonzalez when I purchased the Christine Lavin compilation 'When October Goes' which features tracks by a number of today's most talented singer - songwriters.

If you are unfamiliar with Raymond's music,it's quite difficult to draw comparisons as his sound is so unique.

However, artists such as David Wilcox, David Buskin, Patty Larkin (on earlier recordings,'Strangers World' or 'Angels Running') and Cheryl Wheeler all come to mind. Smooth vocals, gentle melodies, insightful lyrics and great guitar playing are what make this cd so special.

Highlights include 'I Think I'll Go', 'Cloudless Summer Evening' and the title track, 'Moonlight and Sage'.

I cannot recommend this album enough. In addition to the 3 other cds by Raymond available on Amazon, it's worth trying to track down a copy of his early '90s recording with Amy Malkoff 'On The Water' which is excellent.

Breakout artist Man E Faces a.k.a Emmanuel Faces drops a bomb with his first CD. Make no mistake, this is Hip-Hop with a message. Man E tells us he was sent here to tell us of a great conjunction. An end and a new beginning. He warns us of the impeding danger from the powers that be and tells us to put away our fruits of bondage. This album is DEEP. Man E encourages us to seek the higher ground by reaching for the sky. He gives us a lovely melody for our ladies, but with respect because she is part of us. This CD is for mature heads. If you're still chewing bubble gum, it'll go over your head. The Great Conjunction

              Album Description

Influenced by her travels in Europe and South America, STRANGE CONJUNCTION is a solo exploration of the confluence of worlds without and within. Wendy's lyrical piano weaves together her studies of classical, jazz, and popular idioms. Her poetry with improvised piano on the title track was inspired by "Women In Love" by D.H. Lawrence. "What I want is a strange conjunction with you," he said quietly; "not meeting and mingling; you are quite right: but an equilibrium, a pure balance of two single beings: as the stars balance each other."
