A real treasure.......2007-05-16
This album really hooked me on the awesome talent of Sam Cooke! I had listened over the years to Sam's many hits on the radio. I tried this album to catch some of my favorites. Wow, what a revelation! it is now one of my top three favorite CDs. I can't recommend it more.
After all these years, still the best. . . .......2007-05-13
Even though Sam Cooke has been gone for so many years, time has not diminished the quality and genius of his music. The songs still have
the same meaning as they did back in the day. The world lost him much too soon, but his music lingers on and entertains many of the younger generations. This CD is the best of the best!!
FABULOUS compilation.......2007-05-08
I am completely in love with this man and his voice, second only to Otis Redding. If I could listen to nothing else, that would be just fine with me. I was surprised to hear some songs I had either forgotten about or never heard before. Chock-full of goody after goody. I can't get enough.
Portrait of a Legend 1951-1964.......2007-05-06
This CD includes all of Sam Cooke's hits as a solo artist after leaving The Soul Stirrers. I love this CD.
A legend's best.......2007-03-30
If you are a Sam Cooke fan, this is a must have. I personally enjoy singing along to every cut on the CD.

Great place to start and then some.......2007-06-09
I've had this CD for quite a while and moved on to the individual albums so thought it would be interesting to look at it again now that I've gotten further into Marty's fabulous array of records. This collection still holds up really well and is totally worth every dime. There are defintely holes in it but the good news is it's a case of getting a lot of satisfaction finding out what else he did. I can't think of a "country" singer with a more soulful voice let alone his other talents. Marty was the man. After getting this collection I'd go right into "Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs" to start to delve further.
Marty Robbins life time of songs.......2007-01-06
Great CD, all the favorites on one CD. There doesn't seem to be any more of the good old recording artist out there any more, only hip -hop country. I have always liked Marty Robbins, Chet Atkins and the likes of these type of singers.
Good place to start.......2005-11-30
I wanted to listen to Marty Robbins. Always liked the song Singing the blues and knew El Paso. This is a great start to Marty Robbins but diffently not the last cd i'll be purchasing from him.
Nothing Bad Here But Not All You Need.......2004-11-30
This is actually a lesser version of "The Essential Marty Robbins - 1951-1982" and while most of the songs are easy to listen to when served up by Marty, if you can get the above-named compilation, you will THEN have all you need (unless you require a lot of his Western album cuts, a treat in themselves). His early 50s songs were just typical blah old-time country for the most part but even with the traditional hillbilly orchestration, Marty made "I Couldn't Keep From Crying" special and an omen of what was to come. "That's All Right, Mama" (on both albums) is just a cover of Elvis Presley's regional hit before he went on to national success and is nothing special. As always, there's plenty to like here. It just could have been better.
a wonderful collection.......2004-03-20
Marty Robbins had so many hits through the years that even this impressive showing isn't complete. i don't know if this is a record-setting feat or not, but Marty had 37 consecutive Top-40 hits from 1953-1965...the single that broke the string was "Old Red" in 1965, it charted one week at #50. i love nearly all the songs on this album, the only one i didn't like as much is "Tomorrow You'll Be Gone". all of his big hits are on here and the only ones that were popular with his audience that they left off were: "Begging To You"; "Mr. Shorty"; "Cigarettes and Coffee Blues"; and "The Cowboy in the Continental Suit". incidentally, "Begging To You" was a 3 week #1 country hit and a #74 pop hit too so why it was left off i have no clue. Marty was one of country music's first pop cross-over acts. from 1956-1964 he constantly had singles on the country and pop singles charts. 11 of his pop cross-overs hit the Top-40, which in those days was unheard of for a country act to chart so high. All in all, this is a great look at Marty Robbins. one of my favorites is the last song, "Some Memories Just Won't Die". i love that arrangement and his performance shows that he still had it...even months before his death in December 1982 {that song was his last Top-10 in his lifetime; his final Top-10 came after his death, the early 1983 "Honkytonk Man"; not to be confused with the same titled hit by Johnny Horton and the remake later by Dwight Yoakam}.

great cd.......2007-05-07
I am very happy with this cd, it is as good as the movie is, not one song has been left out, a great cd to listen to.
Buy another version.......2007-04-28
I have several recordings of Show Boat, and as much as I like the movie version, this is by far the weakest recording of them all. This should actually be called highlights from Show Boat as the score is mercilessly cut. Most problematic is the really poor (in some cases terrible) sound. In their attempt to rerecord the music in stereo the sound has become muffled with no dynamic range at all. The stereo effects are just wishful thinking. My old Metro LP sounds better. Even Ava Gardner's excellent tracks can't save this one. I like most of the Rhino soundtracks, but you can skip this one.
Sount track.......2007-01-09
I goofed and did not pay attention to how it was labeled, I thought i was ordering the actual movie.. but his is a fine musical!
"Make Believe" alone is worth it!.......2006-07-26
I'm not even close to being an expert on music, but this album is so marvelous, so uplifting and beautiful, that it will send you singing the tunes all day. How can you not sing along with some of the best music of the 20th century? Kathryn Grayson and Howard Keel blend so perfectly, and Grayson's range is stunning. Ava Gardner puts her whole body into her songs and you can just picture her sultry eyes.
No doubt, this is the best purchase I've made all year. This is real MUSIC.
Great movie version of great show - BUT ..........2006-01-11
As other reviewers have said - this is a wonderful show - Jerome Kern's masterpiece. And it must be admitted that the performances are, on the whole, magnificent. Ava Gardner's own singing was overdubbed on the soundtrack itself - whoever decided this was necessary was obviously tone deaf - and the fact that we have her original versions is great.
SO why do I give this soundtrack version only 4 stars (actually if we had half stars I think I'd make it 3.5!
1. The arrangements are very "rich" - of course you are welcome to prefer them to the clearer, brighter orchestrations of just about all the available stage versions if you like - I for one don't!
2. The remastering is a little strange. They have rechanelled the original mono sound track into stereo - and although this is by no means so dire as usual in such cases (they were actually able to use the output of separate microphones!) it DOES sound just a little peculiar. Or is it just my aging ears? Anyway - the sound is really not outstanding, even taking into consideration that is is after all a fifties soundtrack.
3. The film bowdlerised the play quite a bit - as well as "sexual explicitness" - the anti-racist message of the original stage version was considered a little too blunt for fifties Hollywood. While the effect on the soundtrack is not great - there are one or two key songs missing. And changes to the lyrics like "I've got talent but it ain't been tested" instead of "I've got virtue but it ain't been tested" take away half the humour without necessarily making the show any "purer".
If you are a real fan of Show Boat itself, or of Jerome Kern, or even just of musicals in general you will probably NEED to own this CD, if only for the sake of completeness.
On the other hand, if you have a good stage version of the same show this one probably may not get played too often.

Before moving to the greener pastures of string-heavy countrypolitan, Price was a challenger for the honky-tonk crown. These 20 songs marvelously outline the rapid development of Price's emerging style. His 1951 debut, Lefty Frizzell's "If You're Ever Lonely Darling," finds Price emulating Frizzell's sweet delivery, while two ballads from the following year show Price firmly in Hank Williams territory. By 1953, his voice matured into a booming force, balancing the early sweetness with a hint of spice and a new vigor. The defining moment came in 1956 with the release of "Crazy Arms" and the unveiling of the Western swing-influenced "Ray Price Shuffle." From that point, Price would consistently feature this smooth and steady beat, even covering Bob Wills's "My Shoes Keep Walking Back to You." --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
THE ESSENTIAL RAY PRICE.......2007-04-11
I was looking for a cd with all of his great songs spanning the decades of his career. This compilation begins with his early days when he sounds exactly like Hank Williams. I was looking for his trademark sound, the 4,4 shuffle beat. There are more early hits ( when he sounds like Hank ) then when he came into his own. This is still a good cd for any fan but, now I have to look for some of the same songs which are on this cd with his own trademark voice.
Essential.......2007-04-08
This is essential country music. The "Ray Price Shuffle" sound has been copied by thousands of country artists all over the world and for one very good reason; it sounds fantastic. This albums shows the development of the style and is a must for any comprehensive country music collection. For less than $10 you can get a dose of honky tonk heaven; a heaven where most of todays Country (Pop) acts wouldn't get past the Gates of St. Peter. Also recommened is Ray's ode to heartbreak - "Touch My Heart".
Ray Price: Country Music Giant.......2007-01-11
No country music fan should be without this disc. This is Ray Price's early best. It is all here! That classic ache in his voice makes us feel heartache and "Crazy Arms" is one of the best country songs ever - period - and Ray's version is still the one that all others must be measured by and there are many good others to enjoy. You really cannot be a Country Music fan without this next to your Jimmie Rodgers, Gene Autry, The Sons of the Pioneers,Bob Wills, Hank Williams, Webb Pierce, Johnny Cash,Marty Robbins,Patsy Cline,Louvin Brothers,Jim Reeves, Don Gibson,Buck Owens, Sonny James, Merle Haggard,Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris et al. Its got to be there! So buy and enjoy.
Where's the 6th Star?.......2007-01-03
Yeah, I'd give this one 6 stars if I could. Ray Price invented the honky tonk sound, and this album clearly documents the development in wonderful progression. Tracks 1-5 are development, 6 through 20 are the best old, hard edge, wintage Texas honky tonk ever recorded. This takes me back to small Texas bars, my fake ID, and Ray Price and the Cherokee Cowboys singing for hours after the bar normally closed, everyone drunk and loving it. The album wisely ends before Ray went weird, singing such pop junk as "Danny Boy" and "For The good Times", and traveling with a frikkin orchestra. This is Ray in that short window of greatness, the true heart of the Texas honky tonk.
WOW--great honky tonk!.......2006-10-03
This is easily one of the greatest honky tonk CDs available. Why we can't we hear this fanatastic music today? If you want twangy, moaning honky tonk, this is it. This IS country music.

Why 5... Find Out!.......2006-10-12
This Aida is perhaps the best I've ever heard. Even in the libretto it states that it is a full-blooded performance. I whole-heartedly agree. Callas, once again giving her exciting performances in Mexico City, turns her Aida into the stuff of legend. Again. Del Monaco is the best of any Radames. Yes, Domingo had the dramatic capability, but Del Monaco's overpowering voice should well be the trademark of the overpowering Egyptian military leader. Dominguez is the best of any Amneris I've heard, and also is mentioned in the libretto as having "opulent" tones. The word "opulent" doesn't begin to describe the effect she had on me in "L'aborrita rivale a me sfuggia". In the "Rivedrai le foreste imbalsamate" duet with Aida and Amonasro, Giuseppe Taddei tops all expectations, blowing back even Tito Gobbi. Altogether, this recording is a must even for people who hate Callas. 5 stars.
Callas Aida, Mex. City, 1951.......2006-07-21
Everyone is on fire in this performance. Singers today do not have that "fuoco". Thanks to recordings like these, opera fans of the post Callas era, like myself, can get a "glimpse" into her glorious past. Callas and Del Monaco soar over everything else in the second act! And of course, the famous E flat! O. Dominguez as Amneris! I became an instant fan; hard to find other recordings of her. Some of the reviewers refer to Anmeris as Simionato, it is Dominguez! Taddei is perfect as Amonasro - great visceral singing- no baritones like him around anymore. Who cares if the sound is not perfect? I like all the environmental sounds, it makes me feel like I am right there. I only listen to live stuff anyway, because it is the real deal; I find most studio recordings boring. It is the best AIDA I have heard. Get it!
Callas's most famous Aida -- all I can say is wow.......2006-02-17
This 1951 Mexico City performance of Aida has become legendary, largely due to Callas's unbelievable performance in the title role. Aida was not a role strongly associated with Callas (the way, say, Norma was). She dropped it from her repertoire in 1953, only making a studio recording in 1955, which I always found to be a disappointment.
But in this 1951 Mexico City performance, Callas was on fire. Her voice of course never had the glowing beauty of a Tebaldi or Price, but Callas makes her Aida a firy princess. Her "Ritorna vincitor" might be the best sung version I've ever heard. Rosa Ponselle and Giannina Arangi-Lombardi and Renata Tebaldi may sound more beauty but Callas inflects the text to great emotional effect. Her "O patria mia" is a rough moment -- high C was always a rough note for Callas, and she can't sing it "dolce" as marked in the score. But her Act 3 duets with del Monaco and Taddei are remarkable, as is her "O terra addio." And of course, she caps off the Triumphal Scene with the famous E-flat that lasts 7 seconds (yes I've counted). Legend has it that in 1950, when she sang Aida at Mex City with Kurt Baum, she was so annoyed with the tenor that she did the E-flat at the Triumphal Scene. It worked so well that the next year she tried the same stunt.
The rest of the cast is strong. I prefer a Radames who is better able to control dynamics like Franco Corelli or Carlo Bergonzi. Mario del Monaco seems to sing in two ways -- loud and louder. But del Monaco is certainly stentorian and heroic and there just aren't voices like him anymore. Giuseppe Taddei is a wonderfully nasty Amonasoro. His voice practically drips hatred and bitterness. And Oralia Dominguez is not as well-known as the rest of the cast but she's terrific nonetheless, with a beautiful, powerful mezzo voice.
The sound is admittedly bad, but the performance more than makes up for it.
All hail to the E Flat Goddess.......2005-08-23
I have always love Aida I have heard 3 versions but nothing can compare to this. Although the recording quality is terrible, this 1951 gala captures The La Divina in the prime of her vocal prowess. The first time I heard the e flat in the Triumphant schene, my jaw dropped.I could not describe the feeling I had that time. I just closed my eyes and thank the Creator above for giving the world "Maria Callas the greatest suprano in living memory".
Nuclear Aida!!!.......2005-03-18
Ever imagine a large voiced Callas singing Aida? Here it is! Ever wanted her paired with an amazing Radames with a large, robust voice? You have it here! What about an explosive Amneris? Oralia Dominguez is also cast in this performance! What about a 12-second, interpolated E-flat? Callas sings it, and with a huge blazing voice too! Very unlike the standard canary E-flats you hear today! What about a great performance and a dramatically convincing Aida with Giuseppe Taddei as Amonasro? Well, this is it! Although her fabulous studio Aida wasn't as accepted as the Price Aida, this live recording from Mexico puts Leontyne's recording to second place. No other Aida will be able to achieve such a miraculous job of singing the role with that kind of forza, and with that kind of passion. The studio recording with Callas is recommended too, if you want to hear the several colors of Aida.

Yul Brynner made a career out of playing the King of Siam. He owns it so much that it's disconcerting to see Rex Harrison play it in the film version of Anna & the King of Siam, the play Rodgers and Hammerstein adapted. Ironically, the still-unknown Brynner wasn't the star of the 1951 production; he's billed below British grande dame Gertrude Lawrence (played by Julie Andrews in the biopic Star!), who died during the play's run, and curio value is the only real reason for this recording in 1998. Sound quality is below standard, much like MCA other early Decca original cast albums, and Brynner was still too young to bring the majestic authority to the role he did in both the film and later stage versions. --Bill Holdship

Something Entirely Wonderful!.......2004-12-04
This was the first R+H recording i bought and i was enchanted by it from the very beginning. True, it has its limitations and it is certainly not my favorite R+H score,(one reviewer commented that this was the last of the great R+H musicals. Excuse me? Have you ever heard of The Sound of Music?) but it is undoubtedly a very necessary addition to any Broadway collection. The performances of the stars are incredable and the great collaborators are in their element, though for me this is more of a Rodgers triumph than a Hammerstein one. The soaring, romantic, exotic, colorful (etc, etc) music instantly captures each listener and is brilliantly arranged by their wonderful orchestrater Robert Russell Bennet. While the sound may not always be as good as it could be, one must take into account that the recording industry was still very much in its infant stages in 1951. Admitedly, the stars performances may not be as pleasing vocally as the could be, but they do extremely well in spite of this and are backed up by a stellar supporting cast. Doretta Morrow and Larry Dougles bring their own magic to what i consider to be one of R+H's greatest love songs, I Have Dreamed. Dorothy Sarnoff is magnificent in the soaring showstopper, Something Wonderful. Yul Brynner provides a fine rendition of A Puzzlement and joins Lawrence in that Wonderful closing number Shall We Dance, which it is impossible not to dance to. Lawrence's voice is weak but she still provides very pleasing renditions of Hello, Young Lovers and Getting To Know You. My one regret, (I can ignore the truncated numbers when the parts that ARE provided are so satisfying) is that there isn't even an incomplete rendition of the Uncle Thomas Ballet which is one of my favorite parts of the stage show. Still, that can be found on other recordings but the charm, the beauty and the freshness that can only ever be found on Original Cast Recordings, can't.
1951-not the year to capture a great musical.......2004-07-26
One correction to a review on this page. (Sorry) Yul Brynner was in his early thirties when this recording was made. (Born 1920). The only real value in this album is Gertrude Lawrence. Her star power was incredible, although this forced album does not allow her to completely shine. The recording technique is terrible. It's flat (not referring to pitch), the instruments are muffled, and everything is cut to fit either time for the 78 RPM's or for radio broadcast. Not a true representation of the great musical. I understand that this is 1951, but Columbia was light years ahead in recording technique (South Pacific-1949) The best representation is the 1977 Braodway Cast(RCA), which showed Yul Brynner in his return to Broadway. It is also the first recording with everything (except Uncle Thomas)to be uncut. Superb sound, and even some dialouge vignettes from different scenes, including a full Shall we Dance? Buy 1977, not 1951. Not recommending this recording.
Recording not up to demands of show.......2004-01-23
THE KING AND I has always been one of Rodgers & Hammerstein's most popular shows. It has been frequently recorded receieving 4 New York cast albums, 2 London casts and 3 studio casts as well as the film soundtrack. Normally the first original cast is to be preferred but the limitations of the day prevent this 1951 recording from being definitive.
Decca was not as advacnced in recording techniques as were some of the other labels and the sound quality of this disc is very tinny. Gertrude Lawrence's already thin voice is not helped at all. The lady has pitch problems and her celebrated stage presence just doesn't come across on the recording. Dorothy Sarnoff and Doretta Morrow at least have voices up to the demands of the music, but they too suffer from the flad sound of the Decca studio. Larry Douglas uses his voice to good effect and projects some warmth in his duets, while Yul Brynner is heard only in a heavily cut recording of "A Puzzlement" and for a few lines in "Shall We Dance." This last number, shorn of its dialogue and dramatic context is robbed of any meaning. It becomes just another number. Although this album was originally released in all 3 speeds (78, 45 and 33) the songs were heavily abridged to fit the 3 1/2 minute limitations of the 78 RPM format. All in all, it is not a satisfactory recording of the show.
Those in search of the nearly complete score would be better served by the 1977 RCA cast album of the revival with Brynner in full command of the role.
Not an easy listen.......2004-01-13
I have found that there are two types of R & H works. There are the lively and upbeat scores, like Cinderella and Sound of Music. Then there are the slower and denser scores, like Carousel and the King and I, which are not bad, but not to my liking. There are not many songs on here that appeal to the popular tastes. Music theorists will probably love it. I have found that the best R and H works are the ones that sound like they were written today, most notably Sound of Music.

Sugar Blues By Clyde McCoy.......2007-05-30
I had been trying to get this album for quite some time and the wait was worth it.The album is more than I had antisipated as each and every number
was great. The muted trumpet of Clyde McCoy is absolutely the best I have ever heard, and I was amaized at the sound quality for something done in 1951.To anyone who enjoys jazz and particularly trumpet, I highly recomend
this product.
Sugar Blues - I really loved this song when I was eight........2006-08-17
I played our 78 of Sugar Blues over and over as a kid - until we finally broke it . Recently saw a commercial on TV featuring the song and it brought back memories of how enjoyable this music was. This is a great compilation of those memorable songs.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent, I love it.......2007-03-01
For anyone who likes to relive the golden era of pianists, a time when music itself was the core of a performance, this collection is a must have. The serene loneliness in Clara Haskil's interpretation of Mozart and Schubert was simply heartbreaking. Honest, elegant, and never self-centered, these memorable recordings deserve 5 solid stars.
Clara Haskil Returns!.......2007-02-04
Like many of the recent "Original Masters" reissues, this 7CD set of music performed by pianist Clara Haskil has been available since last July as an import, and now has finally been released in the U.S. In fact, all of the music contained on "Clara Haskil: Philips Recordings 1951-1960" has been reissued previously on CD, in two different box sets in the now out-of-print "Clara Haskil Legacy" series. Despite this, it is wonderful to have these classic performances back, particularly because those "Legacy" volumes were fetching outrageous prices as rare collector's items. Haskil was one of the legendary interpreters of Mozart and her Concerto recordings presented here of Nos. 9, 20 (two versions, mono & stereo), 23 & 24 (along with those she made for Westminster and DG -- see my reviews) are not to be missed. But also her Beethoven, Schumann and Chopin renditions are so delicately light and breathtaking, they cannot be overlooked, and they provide such a nice contrast to all the romantic ivory pounders out there. The first three CDs capture her sensitivity in various Sonatas, and they are most excellent. If you love great piano music and didn't have a chance to get these marvelous performances the first time around, don't miss out now!

Amazon.com essential recording
This is a considerably expanded version of the soundtrack album to Vincente Minnelli's Oscar-winning film. With two discs and 100 minutes of music (much of which is presented for the first time), these original session masters are highlighted by the MGM Studio Orchestra, Oscar Levant, Benny Carter, and Gene Kelly, all of whom perform such memorable Gershwin tunes as "Someone to Watch Over Me," "Love Is Here to Stay," and "S'Wonderful." Just about all of the material has a monotonously mono sound, but Levant's version of "Concerto in F" is included here for the first time in true stereo. Along with several Levant improvisational piano solos based on Gershwin's music, there are also some outtakes as well as extensive production and historical notes. --Joseph Lanza

Magic of love.......2007-03-10
Nothing but Gene and George: the hard work and the happiness in music, conducting by the magician Vince.
Noone is better, noone could do better.
American masterpiece with european feelings.
Filled with musical gems.......2004-02-17
This comprehensive edition is a must have for fans of the movie and of the Gershwins. The outtakes, contrary to the first review above, are excellent. Gene Kelly offers a wonderful vocal of "I've Got a Crush on You" and his short riff on "'S Wonderful" is almost like an acoustic version, much different than the over-the-top duet in the movie. And the Oscar Levant piano pieces are as close to George sitting down at the keys as we're going to get.
TOO LONG !!!!!!!!!!!.......2002-06-17
I would not suggest buying this version of this sondtrack!!! The underscores and the extra tracks that are not featured in the film are not neccesary. Rhino records puts the extras out to jack up the price of the CD (making one LP into 2 CDs).
I would buy the ORIGINAL CAST SOUNDTRACK released by MGM records. You will enjoy this version ever so much more without all the extras!!!
GERSHWIN'S TALENT.......2001-08-12
Many agree that the talented George Gershwin is a fabulous pianist, and alongside Ira, he helped to create some of the most beloved music ever. After viewing the movie that was filled with song and dance, I was pleased to discover that the soundtrack was readily available. The plot of An American in Paris mainly focuses on the lives of three friends and their dreams in addition to the romance that they encounter in the most popular European city. Gene Kelley is a struggling artist who soon falls in love, and the many songs in this cd express his emotions. Who wouldn't want to dance to Gershwin's spectacular tunes such as "Embraceable You?" These original songs included in this two cd set are well worth the price. Furthermore, "I'll Build a Stairway to Paradise" is a true favorite with unique lyrics. Don't miss out on this must have cd collection.
Ga Ga for Gershwin.......2000-12-13
Nearly every popular Gershwin tune is represented here, either as an instrumental, a vocal, or a production number. I am not a big fan of the film, but the soundtrack is fabulous. There are some stereo tracks here, too. Yet another triumph in the Turner/Rhino soundtrack collection of MGM films. As a sidenote I would like to thank Rhino for their extremely co-operative staff. When I bought this CD I opened up the very extensive booklet and was disappointed to find that due to an error on the assembly line I had received an insert that had some pages repeated and others deleted. I contacted Rhino and they sent me a new booklet which arrived within a week! That's what I call excellent customer service. The really neat thing is the fact that I have both booklets. The flubbed copy is sort of a collector's item to me.

Crosby's radio legacy.......2004-08-10
I was lucky enough to find reels of Crosby's radio shows before any were issued on CD. These are among the great ones. Apparently he liked to play golf so his shows were pre-recorded, first on acetates, then on tape (which he helped create by financing Ampex). So the sound is great quality. There are many more with Peggy Lee, Mary Martin, Judy Garland (who took over when Crosby's wife died for a few shows), etc. - issue them all. Also recommended - the "Hollywood" double CD with highlights with Ethel Merman, early Galand, Jolson, Lillie, etc.
Bravo! Bravo!.......2001-03-02
The 1st cut starts with Crosby's theme song and then has a two minute (approx) dialog between Crosby and Armstrong in which they banter back and forth humorously. It's good, but I will probably skip to the 2nd cut when the banter starts on subsequent listenings. The quality of the radio shows is so high as to make today's TV shows seem like "amateur hour" by comparison. Armstrong was very highly revered by Crosby and it shows in the way Bing treats Louis on these cuts. There is a song in which Ella Fitzgerald joins Bing and Louis. There is a song in which Dinah Shore joins in. It all sounds so real and immediate, so full of life, that listening to it is almost like being transported back to the years 1949 to 1951. These two giants of music created in large measure America's sense of musical identity dring that era. This is a wonderful CD that I can't imagaine not being cherished by generations to come for as long as man is on this planet. I think it helps to read, as I have, Gary Giddins wonderful, and brief biography of Loius Armstrong, "Satchmo: The Genius of Louis Armstrong". It also helps to have read Gary Giddins' throrough biography of Crosby, "Bing Crosby: A Pocketful of Dreams--The Early Years 1903-1940 ". (I'm half way through this excellent, but long, book). In summary, the more one knows about Bing and Louis, the more of their genius can be appreciated and savored. They knew each other since the 1920's and respected and admired each other. This is a great CD. Armstrong and Crosby cross-influenced each other, each trail-blazing and redefining jazz music in important ways. Hearing them together on one CD interacting with each other is a wonderful experience.
