Billy Martin of Medeski Martin & Wood has been curating Turntable Sessions every year at various downtown NYC clubs since Exit Art's LP Show in 2001. Each show includes a featured DJ and pairs off various musical improvisers; the show concludes with the entire ensemble improvising together. Luminaries from NYC's downtown scene and Martin's friends contribute for a strange trip through turntables, laptops and microphones. 'The Turntable Sessions Volume 1' is a compilation of performances from the 2001-2002 series.

This CD is the greatest CD ever made!I first bought Sonic Sessions Vol.1 and loved it,and let me tell you one thing,this CD was just as good if not better.It has 14 of some the coolest modern rock songs ever made, on my oppionion, this CD is a must have for anyone.

This is an old favorite album from the early 1970s. Amazing to hear these performances again on CD. A truly tight big band in live performances. Little Pixie is one of the classic big band cuts.

Whether it's the romp and stomp of 'Don't Git Sassy' or the way the reeds and muted brass tackle the daunting harmonies and rhythms of 'Little Pixie', the energy and class of this band always amazes. Not only were Thad Jones and Mel Lewis fine (and often underrated) musicians themselves, but they surrounded themselves with a band that brimmed with talent. This live recording (from the Vanguard in 1970) leaves the sound a bit dry and fuzzy, but doesn't take away from the enjoyment of listening to this disc. A great sample of this group at the top of their game.

This is one of my all-time favorites. A band recorded at its peak -- well, actually, they climbed to the top of the mountain, set up camp, and stayed there for a decade or so. So good, it's almost scarry!
