Product Description
The FLH Trio returns with their second album for Atavistic: a beautifully conceived, bittersweet follow-up volume to "A Valentine For Fred Katz". On "Other Valentines", the Trio weaves ten rich tapestries from luminary songwriters' works: Sun Ra, Syd Barrett, Jeff Tweedy, Gil Scott-Heron, Chan "Cat Power" Marshall (and Mr. Fred Katz, too), and all are given a timeless and virtuoustic treatment. Few albums released in this era have kindled more gentle introspection- or been as aptly titled. News flash: Fred Lonberg-Holm has just been enlisted to replace the departing Jeb Bishop in The Vandermark 5 and will be touring with North America's premiere jazz quintet this fall.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2005-05-18

Consider Fred Lonberg-Holm's Terminal 4 project, where the erstwhile cellist utilized an instrumental ensemble to execute a program of jazzy improvisations of his own indie pop/rock flavored compositions, "Other Valentines" is not only a follow up to his previous album, "Valentines for Fred Katz" but a jazz based excursion into the contemporary world of pop music itself. Spinning variations on the popular music he admires, Fred Lonberg-Holm delivers one of the most lyrically gorgeous instrumental pop cover records committed by a jazz improviser in recent memory.

Where "Valentines for Fred Katz" was specifically geared towards shedding light upon the work of post-war jazz cellist Fred Katz, "Other Valentines" is a love letter of sorts to Lonberg-Holm's own personal music heroes. Although the covers are extended improvisations based on simple pop music themes, Holm never allows his cello, bass and drums based trio's interpretations to get overly busy or needlessly complex, thereby diluting the direct but powerful emotional content that such material is capable of delivering. Take for example "Fool," Cat Power's recent folksy dirge, as re-interpreted by the trio it sounds as though it could have been conceived as an instrumental piece so fully vested is Lonberg-Holm in the melodic content, working simple variations on the theme over and over gain, with and without dissonance and extrapolation, expanding the piece to allow for a more nuanced and rich interpretation. Wilco's "Jesus, etc" is executed with a sprightly but obtuse rhythm that gives its bittersweet melodic core a decidedly optimistic outlook. Tunes by Syd Barrett, Gil Scott-Heron and Sun Ra are given stellar treatment as well.

An amazingly beautiful crossover album, "Other Valentines" imparts heartfelt integrity to virtuosic instrumental interpretations of current pop music that few other improvising artists seem either capable or desirous of.

3 out of 5 stars Quiet, nice, a little monotonous.......2005-05-13

I haven't heard the Fred Katz tribute that preceded this disc; this disc has another Katz tune plus a bunch of other covers--an unexpected bunch, ranging from Gil Scott-Heron to Wilco to Sun Ra to Syd Barrett. It's all very nicely done, though I can't get too excited about it either; Lonberg-Holm is a bit monochrome & repetitive as a sole voice, & I miss the unpredictability of Ernst Reijseger or the harsher nutsiness of Tristan Honsinger. It's a terribly serious-sounding album.

If you have a strong interest in Lonberg-Holm, or in jazz cello, then this is worth checking out; otherwise it's missable.
