Brand New have specialized in pain ever since the pop-punk emo-rage of their 2001 debut release Your Favorite Weapon. But they've outdone themselves on The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me. If the songs on Weapon were paper cuts, the ones here are gaping chainsaw wounds, full of seismic, howling agony. The moody rumbles of 2003's Deja Entendu were pointing here, but this is something else, with Mogwai-level dynamic range and tracks that careen from introspection to fury and back again. Lyrically, lead singer Jesse Lacey's words remain excruciating and harrowing things, but that's nothing new. It's the music propping them up which gives this effort such depth and punch. "Degausser" starts so innocently, then uses a bridge augmented with a bitter children's chorus straight out of The Wall as a lead in to Lacey's bitter refrain of "I'll never say anything right." Then there's the nearly 8-minute "Limousine (MS Rebridge)," epic, and epically sad, constantly threatening to descend into pure cacophony (and eventually succeeding). Repeated listens will tune your ear to the band's still-intact pop sense (especially on "Not the Sun" and "The Archers Bows Have Broken"), which keeps the record lively and unpredictable, and away from becoming a depressing, head-in-the-oven mope. Brand New went through three years of intense recording sessions to make it happen, but it was worth the effort. --Matthew Cooke

5 out of 5 stars Powerful.......2007-07-04

This album takes off in a different direction from Deja Entandu, Its full of emotion and power like their last album but with more screaming. An awesome album, Brand New continues to refine their sound and have come a long way from Your Favorite Weapon

5 out of 5 stars Better than ever.......2007-05-28

I've been a Brand New fan for a long time, and this album has only increased my love for such an innovative, talented band. Many bands change their styles to please more people to become more famous, but Brand New has not done this. Instead, they continue to grow in their own style and grow in popularity anyway. This album includes Jesse's thought-provoking lyrics, awesome guitar parts, and meaningful melodies and harmonies fans have come to expect. This is the best album I have ever heard, and I cannot stop listening to it. They have grown so much, especially in diversity of their songs. This album is perfect in every way! BUY IT!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Album I Never Heard in 2006!.......2007-05-16

The year 2006 had come to a close and I had not heard this album. Usually at the end of every year I compile a list of the Top20 albums I've heard in the year. I missed one and I cannot forgive myself! This albums continues through and through with the main theme, "good vs. evil" and it works on almost every track. It is one of the albums I just can't put too far away from my cdplayer. I've loaded up some songs on my iPod, including the 2007 single, "Jesus Christ". "Brand New" was problably the most under-rated artiste of 2006.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite bands.......2007-05-09

I have both of their best albums and I listen to them both front to back weekly, they are both always found in my disc-changer in my truck. Track 3 is my favorite on this Album.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Album Ever.......2007-05-05

All in all, a genius, unique, and great album.
1. Sowing Season - Great song, great guitar riff, and it just punches you right in the face...in a good way. Yeah.
2. Millstone - Awesome sounding vocal harmony at the beginning. Cool chorus, especially the cool backup vocal track. A very nifty drum tom outro.
3. Jesus Christ - Jesus Christ I love this song. The ending gives me a chill every time, the way Jesse sing/screams that is amazing. I don't like screaming, but Jesse makes it sound like a mixture of singing and screaming and I love it love it love it. It was definitely my favorite when I first heard the CD, though not any more, read on.
4. Degausser - This song gives you a crazy feeling...it's very dark sounding in my opinion, and the first time the ensemble of Jesses sang "Take apart your head" it kind of startled me. Great song though, awesome awesome awesome outro...lyrically and musically.
5. Limousine - I didn't like this one at first, but it grew on me very much. Starts out very quiet and then kicks into crunchy sounding vocals (only way I can think to describe it). And my favorite part - the resolution from the crunchiness (which isn't bad, by the way..just crunchy) to the beautiful cleanness. When it switches it gives me chills. I also thought the end where he repeats "I love you so much..etc." many many times was too long...but then I listened some more and realized it was extremely cool, because it's a slow slow slow crescendo that you hardly notice. Great song.
6. You Won't Know - Ah I love it. Starts with an extremely quiet intro. Then BOOM...another punch in the face with those scream/sing vocals. My god, I love this song. Such energy and so great great great sounding.
7. Welcome to Bangkok - This one is an instrumental. It's pretty cool, I guess...but I usually skip it. It's cool though, cool guitar work. I saw them live recently on tour with 2 other bands, and both bands came out for this song and were just hitting cymbals, drums, and throwing drums. It was very cool seeing 14 people on stage playing drums and guitars...so basically it's awesome live, but just slightly above average on the album
8. Not The Sun - Tied with You Won't Know for my favorite song on the album. So very cool. From the catchy bassline to the (old)Michael Jackson-like vocals in the verse to the vocal slides in the chorus, it just excels so much. I think my favorite thing about the song is the use of the snare drum in it. I can't explain that though...just know that it's great. Great lyrics too, as is the case with just about every Brand New song. So clever and so meaningful.
9. Luca - The first half or so of this song is acoustic, where Jesse shows us his ability to jump pitches beautifully. I would tell you the highlight of the song, but I feel like I'd be spoiling it, so I won't. Listen to it loud though, but don't try to go to sleep to it, trust me.
10. Untitled - I can't say I understand the point of putting this song on the CD to be honest. It's instrumental, and has the same average guitar part through the whole thing. I assume the weird talking in the background has some kind of meaning, but I've yet to figure it out. I skip it, sorry Brand New.
11. The Archers' Bows Are Broken - Back to the greatness. Not much to say about this one other than that it's quite catchy, and quite good. I absolutely love the lyrics as well.
12. Handcuffs - I'm pretty undecided on this one. Musically, I like it...but I can't seem to get past the lyrics. It's not that they're bad, they just sound wrong to me. Hard to explain. But I've gotten used to it and now sing along.
13. Luca (Acoustic) - Some of the versions of the CD come with this song. It's an acoustic version of Luca. Some different lyrics, and no electric guitars or drums throughout most of the song. Enjoyable, of course, though I prefer the regular version.

This is my favorite album ever. While there are some albums where I enjoy every song on the album and skip none, this one has a few skip-worthy ones...yet somehow it hits me as the best album I've ever heard. Get it, trust me. Don't expect Deja Entendu and DEFINITELY don't expect Your Favorite Weapon. I love both, and I love this one. This band evolves so fast, it's ridiculous. They go from good to great to amazing and they put on the best live show I've seen.

5 out of 5 stars The worship project, too!.......2007-06-16

"Forget all your problems. Forget all your worries;" those are a few words of the title track, "Brand New Day" and after absorbing this spirited musical effort from Jonathan Butler into your spirit, you will find it easier to do just that.

Brand New Day is Jonathan Butler's second full solo offering of inspirational music. The project could have easily been titled "The Worship Project Too" or "The Worship Project 2" for it is a glorious rendering of inspiring and uplifting compositions that I find are love songs to Jesus Christ and music with a message for the rest of us.

The South African born Butler, known in some circles as an accomplished smooth jazz guitarist and vocalist/R&B artist, is absolutely unashamed with sharing his personal relationship with Christ with the masses. Just as he so fervently did on his previous inspirational effort, he again demonstrates his ministry in song here. Butler is more than a guitar playing genius - he is an outstanding vocalist, accomplished writer, arranger and producer. Jonathan is from a very musical family and being the last born of 12 children, it appears that perhaps, God saved the best for last?

Brand New Day offers you 13 wonderful tracks and assisting Jonathan in the production area is the very capable, Luther "Mano" Hanes. who also assisted in the expert engineering of this project. My faves on this work include, "Brand New Day", "Mercy" (featuring Jonathan's daughter, Jodie), "Let The Redeemed Say So", "We Love to Praise Your Name" and " He Said He Would."

Jonathan Butler: "Brand New Day" - a blessing from beginning to end.

Amazon.com essential recording

There is a difference between being an inspired musician and an informed musician. Sting is the latter. As always, he surrounds himself with ultratalented artists: this time around Stevie Wonder, Branford Marsalis, James Taylor, guitarist Dominic Miller, and the prince of rai Cheb Mami, fill the roster. Brand New Day exhibits about as many musical styles as there are tracks, all encased in dense, meticulous production. The album begins promisingly. "A Thousand Years" pulses atop a lush, two-note foundation. "A Desert Rose" folds trilling Algerian pop into trip-hop. Melodic, late-night jazz ballads dominate the middle portion of the collection. But Sting's preoccupation with odd-numbered time signatures prevents the songs from grooving, while the choruses are yawns. "Fill Her Up" (no, not "Fill 'Er Up"), a country tune, represents Sting at his most self-indulgent. Listening to one of the wealthiest musicians in pop singing "Got no money to invest / Got no prospect / Or education / I was lucky to get the job at this gas station" requires a heroic suspension of disbelief. The song morphs into this gospel number where Sting and a supporting chorus chant "You gotta fill 'er up with Jesus! / You gotta fill her up with life!" Who knew unleaded could be so rousing? --Beth Massa

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite.......2007-01-25

Being the Sting fan that I am. This has become my favorite Sting CD. Aa a matter of fact this is my second copy, I wore out the first one!
There is something on this CD for everyone, every mood and a great long drive CD.

4 out of 5 stars Soothing music.......2007-01-16

How can you not like Sting? I happen to really like this CD. His selections of songs on this CD are great and wonderful to listen to.

3 out of 5 stars Better than what I was anticipating........2006-08-30

However, rather bland sounding at best. I found "A Thousand Years" a rather good piece, "Desert Rose" was decent, but not all that great, the rest was all forgettable, and showed that this was just an excuse to put out an album to fufill a record contract. The album comes to a horrible end with the title track which paralyzed me in depression. I'm not sure wheter the single version, or the album version is worse, but to me I know that anyway you slice it it's just enough to make me cry. I know that pretty much Sting made the comment in 1988 that he didn't give a F**K about rock and roll, but in 1991 he comes back with a more pop sounding album, and it continues in 1993, and in 1996 he comes out with "Mercury Uprising", and it has a rock sound to it, but here he decides he's caught in a lie, and now decides to cover it up with numerous musical influences, and it doesn't wash.

1 out of 5 stars Is Sting worse than Billy Joel ?.......2006-08-22

10 years ago I would have said " no it is impossible for anyone who has not actually committed a serious crime to be worse than Billy Joel". Today I know better. Sting has almost single handedly destroyed the ears and the soul of an entire generation of yuppies.

On the other hand Clapton probably stinks louder than even Sting.

4 out of 5 stars Sting - BRAND NEW DAY (1999).......2006-07-12

Sting seemed to be on a roll in the early 90s, with his masterpiece THE SOUL CAGES and the outstanding TEN SUMMONER'S TALES. Unfortunately, his winning streak ended with 1996's MERCURY FALLING, a pretentious, unextraodinary addition to Sting's musical portfolio. In 1999, however, Sting made his comeback in a big way with BRAND NEW DAY. It was the ex-Police frontman's first venture into techno music, which he would continue to explore on his subsequent release, SACRED LOVE. Along with the exotic "Desert Rose", a surprise smash hit for the 50-something musician, there's a variety of delightful songs, including the hyptonic "A Thousand Years", the irresistible "After The Rain Has Fallen", and the mega-upbeat title tune. The album has a few oddities - "Tomorrow We'll See", about a transvestite hooker, redeemed by its shady bass line, and the cringeworthy, pretentious "Fill Her Up", undoubtedly the worst song of Sting's entire career - but for the most part, it's a delightful melding of jazz, alt rock and techno. Over thirty years after a band called The Police burst on to the music scene, Sting still rocks.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasant Surprise.......2006-08-10

I did not realize that this album was out. I was searching for the Prince CD's that I had lost and I found this one. Once again Prince does a GREAT job. He is never a disappointment.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good for the New Prince, but still not like the Old Prince.......2006-04-20

For $3 bucks, this ain't a bad deal. Pretty good for the New Prince, but not like the Old Prince, SST is an above-average track for Prince that, if added to his recent album, would have been a highlight. Odd Sade reference notwithstanding, this track has a cool New Orleans-style melody hook, complex, gospel-style vocals, and a nice vibe. While the intrumental jam BRAND NEW ORLEANS has a sorta clever title, it's really just another throwaway Prince groove that should have kept in The Vaults. Still, SST ranks as one of Prince's better recent cuts that puts most of his last-decade work to shame. Let's he stays this focused and raw and self-contained on his next full-length effort...but I'm not gonna hold my breath.

4 out of 5 stars Nice tracks..........2006-02-01

This would have been a bit better if Prince didn't add his chimes, etc. But overall, this is Prince and it is good.

On Dashboard Confession's fourth album, Christopher Carraba welcomes listeners back into his emotionally claustrophobic world, where relationships are minefields, women are brittle and self-absorbed, and every cloud has a pewter lining. But all this is only fodder for his runaway id, as he deconstructs every encounter, giving us evidence of the pain and betrayal that lurks behind every corner. Finding a home somewhere between the positive punk of Green Day, circa "Time of Your Life," and the stream-of-consciousness poetry of the early Counting Crows, this collection is more musically coherent than Dashboard Confessional's earlier albums. Gil Norton's production has taken the band to new heights, allowing the music to have as much grit, substance, and dynamics as the lyrics. The anxious expectorated sputum of "Am I Missing," is an existential assault on your very sanity, with its fretful drumming and spectral chorus, but this album doesn't sound just that one apprehensive note; Carraba is equally at home with the sparse, acoustic ballad "Ghost of a Good Thing" and the folksy rocker "Carve Your Heart Out Yourself," which could have been lifted from a Buffalo Springfield album. By giving voice to the thoughts that go bump in the night, Carraba gives vulnerability and sincerity a good name again. --Jaan Uhelszki

5 out of 5 stars You're chasing the ghost of a good thing!.......2006-07-06

This is the album that defined Dashboard Confessional as a "band." I loved the other DC albums, where it was just an acoustic guitar (sometimes drums and bass) and Chris Carabba, wearing his heart on his sleeve on every song. So this album made me a little nervous, wondering if I could still feel that passion with a full band. The answer...of course! This album is breathtaking, and the drums are excellent, guitar work of John Lefler is amazing, and the harmony vocals are perfect. Lefler has a style that sounds so lush and beautiful and compliments perfectly with Carabba's. The feeling of this album is less raw than the previous, but even with all of the extra instrumentation, it is still Carabba's voice and lyrics that make this album truly great. From "Hands Down" to "Several Ways To Die Trying," DC has entered into a list of great bands such as Jimmy Eat World and Counting Crows that feature great music, vocals, and better-than-most-band's lyrics. My favorite songs are: Hands Down, As Lovers Go, Carry This Picture, Bend and Not Break (my favorite song on this album), Ghost of a Good Thing (a raw, acoustic song that is very heartfelt), and Carve Your Heart Out Yourself. Each song has a different sound to it and there is no song on here that you will want to skip. Because of this album, the sky is the limit for Dashboard. Also, what makes this album truly worth buying is that is has an enhanced limited edition DVD of DC playing R.E.M. covers from their album "Automatic For The People." It's so good that I immediately bought that REM album. DC is here to stay, so sit back and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars This is what music is supposed to be........2006-06-12

Powerfully written. Raw, unfiltered human emotion. It doesn't get much better than this. Definitely one of the greatest CDs ever written. If you knew Dashboard before this album... forget what you know!! This album is actually good. Yeah I agree with Kenny a lot of emo these days is just lame and uninspired. Look at Taking Back Sunday, Funeral for a Friend, and Brand New.

But then there are gems like this album, Thursday, Thrice, The All-American Rejects, one From Autumn to Ashes album, and Poison the Well. The emotional content in emo is unmatched by any other genre and that's what makes emo the best. If I'm sad and I want to cry are you gonna make fun of me for being human? You gotta be a pretty meek person if you would. Or if I want to scream at the top of my lungs with Poison the Well with tears in my eyes? (who's the whiny wuss now Ken?)

Anyone that still likes Green Day obviously doesn't know what real music is and therefore should not be allowed to review music. They were decent back in the day but have made enough mistakes to really suck now. Mainstream lame-os. If you were to call me a lame emo kid you would be wrong. Some of my favorite stuff is just downright brutal freakin hardcore!! And to tell you the truth I don't just like emo/hardcore I just like really well written music. Even a couple pop songs here and there. I just tend to favor emo because... well for all the reasons mentioned above. "Beautiful" by Christina Aguilera. I think she and her music stink out loud but that song is actually well written and it has a good messege you can't deny that. So who's opinion is more valid? Someone who listens to *shudders* Green Day or someone who listens to GOOD MUSIC no matter what the genre.

If you've made it this far on the page you obviously like this kind of music. Just swallow your pride and buy it. This is one of the few CDs you will NOT regret buying if you're a fan of emo or good music in general. Very few bands have put out a CD this high of quality. Very little bad is to be said about this CD. Not perfect but here's a quick breakdown...

Choice tracks:
Hands Down
Bend and Not Break
Ghost of a Good Thing
Am I missing
So Beautiful
If You Can't Leave it Be, Might As Well Make it Bleed
Several Ways to Die Trying

The other tracks are not bad but those are the best ones. Overall a 92/100 for A Mark, A Mission, A Brand, A Scar.

5 out of 5 stars raw and gorgeous.......2006-03-28

If you haven't noticed already, Chris Carrabba wears his emotions on his sleeve. I love this album, and the first track (hands down) is my favourite song ever. I fell in love with it the first time I heard it and bought the album immediately after without hearing any other DC songs. I soon went back to SAR and TPYHCTFTM and now that Dusk and Summer is out nobody can deny the genius that is DC. This review is long overdue.

While anything but novel, the follow-up to Brand New's emo-punk-blast debut Your Favorite Weapon features unexpected touches and wisps of maturity. YFW was all about the rage and misery of young, explosive love, presented with Weezer-like hooks. Deja Entendu isn't really over it yet; lead singer Jesse Lacey still sounds damaged and full of self-loathing on mopey, post-Smiths pop like "The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot." But amidst the Jimmy Eat World choruses are experiments with sudden dynamic shifts and style (like Lacey channeling Adam Duritz for "Play Crack The Sky"), along with ruminations about the misery of cancer ("Guernica"). If Deja Entendu sounds like the work of musicians discovering their talents, it's also about learning that desperate heartache isn't just about girls who don't call back. --Matthew Cooke

5 out of 5 stars We Really Havent Heard This All Before.......2007-04-03

This is by far, hands down, my favorite album ever. It was weird when I was jamming to 70x7 in my car on the way to get the album and listening intently and serene on the way back. This is one of the "Biggest" albums I own. A huge change and it was welcome...Brand New is one of my favorite groups of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Better and more mature than all the other stupid emo music out there........2007-03-17

Let me just say that I hate emo because I hate any music that appeals to teenagers and I am sick of those whiny lyrics about how your girlfriend broke up with you, believe me it won't be the worst thing that will happen to you in your life. I have a mental disorder called autisum so I remember being made fun of in high school and I still don't have a social life but it never brings me down because I belive in possibilities and I belive that anything can happen.

With that said, let me talk about this album. Like I said, I don't like emo or punk music because of it's teenage angst lyrics and it's over the top and annoying yelling and screaming. I listen to Sarah Mclachlan, Hooverphonic, Fiona Apple, The Pretenders, and Cibo Matto, I also like classical music and film music. I have nothing against lyrics about sadness because I have a mental disorder so I understand unhappiness but I just don't like it when it's all about some high school crush who never called you back. I never really experienced that in high school because I had a more mature adult life in high school and still do. I herd Brand New's first album, Your Favorite Weapon and really did not like it because well you know why but when I herd this I was blown away, the songs are dark and atmospheric, great music to listen to on Halloween, it's almost like a more heavy version of Sarah Mchlachlan with its mature lyrics and melodies, oh the melodies are really beautiful, I don't have a favorite becaue all the songs are perfect. Wonderful lyrics about fear of all the scary things in this messed up world that is more serious than a heart break over a high school crush.

4 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2007-03-12

My Fiance and I never heard of "Brand New" until we went to a Dashboard Confessional concert and they opened for that band. Well, we loved them and immediately got their new album. We loved that album so much we wanted to hear their "old" stuff. We love this one too. We can't wait till they have another one. I would say more than half of the songs are songs we like and will keep listening too. Which is good, because most CD's only have one or two good songs. I find that Brand New has a lot of good songs.

4 out of 5 stars Really good if you're in that mood..........2007-02-14

This is by far the best of their CDs. "Jaws Theme Swimming" is awesome. Definately good alternative music.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest Albums I Own.......2007-02-07

" Deja Entudu " is one of the greatest albums I own. Brand New is incredible! all 3 of their cd's are stellar and incredible. I love their sound, I love Jesse's vocals, they're very powerful, energetic and soothing. Their lyrics just capture you and move you. The best album that Brand New has ever made..so far. I hope they top this, it's gonna be hard, "Devil and God" is a fantastic album, but doesn't top "Deja Entudu".
Amazing Band putting out another Amazing Album!

Pick It Up!

5 out of 5 stars i bought deja entendu first..........2006-03-13

and it took me awhile to like that album. but when i finally did, i loved it, so i decided to explore brand new's old album, "your favorite weapon".

the only song that was remotely close to their sophmore album was "soco amaretto lime". everything else sounds very immature compared to what i heard in deja. but that was what i LOVED about it! i'm a big fan of taking back sunday, matchbook romance (first album), green day, blink 182 and stuff like that. "your favorite weapon" basically combined the best stuff of all of them. it's upbeat, angry lyrics that sport a young attitude, yet are skillfully crafted so the angst and fun of it comes out. the hooks are totally catchy. but the best thing i liked about this album was the way it made me feel. i'm 22 and i'm listening to this the first time and it made me feel young and reckless again (in a good way !)

5 out of 5 stars Great Cd.......2006-02-27

This cd is great. Brand New is an awesome band. Your Favorite Weapon is probably one of my top 5 cd's in my collection.
Great Songs and Great variety.
The Shower Scene - 8/10 A good opener, but not one of my favorites.

Jude Law and a Semester Abroad - 10/10 This song got me into Brand New. It's one of the best on the album.

Sudden Death in Carolina - 9/10 Also a great song. i love the opeing riff.

Mix Tape - 9/10 This one starts off slow but gets better and the ending is great.

Failure By Design - 8.5/10 This song is pretty good, but gets old.

Last Chance To Lose Your Keys - 8.5/10 See above song

Logan To Government Center - 9/10 I really like this song. It starts out kind of mellow which is different but great. I love the lyrics too.

The No Seatbelt Song - 7/10 This song is an acoustic song and in my opinion very forgettable. I usually skip this one.

Seventy Times 7 - 10/10 Great Song! Awesome solo in the beginning, great lyrics, awesome music. A toss-up with track 2 for the best on the album

Secondary - 9/10 another great song

Magazines - 9.5/10 I love this one too. Not quite the caliber of Seventy Times Seven but still awesome.

Soco Armaretto Line - 9/10 This is another acoustic but much better than The No Seatbelt Song. One of my favorite acoustic songs of any band.

5 out of 5 stars Best band you don't know.......2006-02-26

Solid albums are hard to come by these days. Most bands come up with two or three catchy tracks but the album as a whole lacks. Not true of Brand New. Couldn't pick a favorite track if you pointed a gun to my head. The only thing more amazing than releasing a solid album is the fact that they released two solid albums in the same year. No filler here.

5 out of 5 stars unlike any other.......2006-01-05

brand new is incredable with heartfelt lyrics and catchy harmonies. they are without a doubt... genius'. some call it "emo" music witch simply means emotional, and that it is. listen to seventy times 7 which is probably the best song (it is about a best friend found with the singers girlfirend) then browse over to "Taking Back Sunday" for the response to this song in "theres no i in team" featured on their self titled album. its a great story and its a sad event but still makes great song material. def check it out!

Corb Lund and his crackerjack band, the Hurtin' Albertans, lassoed a pen full of awards in the recent Canadian Country Music Awards (and the Western Canadian Music Awards), and for anyone just coming to Lund's brand of ranchin' and ropin' tunes, this album (ironically recorded in Nashville) serves as a fine introduction. The baby-faced Canuck blends a prairie upbringing with 10 years as an indie rocker in his last group, the Smalls, and throws in a smattering of acoustic blues, folk, rockabilly, ragtime, and country-rock to balance his traditional cowpoke leanings. While his subject matter generally hangs around the chutes and the plains, or follows the white line down the highway, Lund is so lyrically and rhythmically inventive that special guests Ian Tyson, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, and Riders in the Sky's Ranger Doug and Too Slim probably begged to ride herd. Put your boots up, pull out a can of chew, and get acquainted with the brightest new star under the western moon. --Alanna Nash

5 out of 5 stars A Breath of Fresh Air.......2007-05-21

I first got hooked on Corb Lund after purchasing his last release ( Five Dollar Bill) and have been anticipating more.
Well, "Hair in my Eyes Like a Highland Steer", does not dissapoint to say the least.
Lund and the Hurtin' Albertans mix the introspective ( The Truth Comes Out, The Rodeo's Over) with the witty ( The Truck Got Stuck, Hurtin' Albertan) to produce a great album full of hooks you will be humming all day.
As a Texan and a rancher, I find it reassuring our "neighbors to the North" share many of our experiences and outlooks. "The Truck Got Stuck" in particular caught my ear, as I have had similar experiences in muddy pastures ( minus the canola seed.)
While these are mainly "cowboy" songs, I think anyone with a love of the West and rural life will find them enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2006-07-09

I heard Corb Lund described as Canada's answer to Cake, but that's not really true. The Corb Lund band is as rooted in Alberta as Cake is in California, and both have smart lyrics, but (even though I don't much like country music) I have to give the nod to this album. Great musical hooks, wonderful lyrics, songs that get stuck in your head and make you smile for days afterward.

I think I'd compare Corb Lund more to Steve Earle, with a catchier bass/banjo line. BRILLIANT album.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Alberta Country ! .......2005-10-18

I was in Canada this weekend and heard the 'The Truck Got Stuck" and I was hooked. I bought the CD and laughed and smiled from the beginning until the end. Buy this CD and ENJOY!

5 out of 5 stars You definately need this cd .......2007-06-14

The cd starts out with Brand New Girlfriend and has you rocking along. It is easily one of the best cd's I have heard in a long time. I've had it for awhile but think that it deserves the best review possible. I give it 5 stars , the vocal ability of Steve Holy is up there with the many great legends of country music. He can sing the ballads like Come on Rain and two seconds later have you laughing until your ready to cry with the songs like Brand New Girlfriend, men buy the drinks(girls call the shots) and hurry up. If you haven't bought it yet. I definately would recommend you do so.

Excellent CD for a relaxing drive. I was impressed that usually my wife ejects a CD after it has played through once, but not this one. It played again & again, which should really tell you something! We are looking forward to Steve Holy's next CD release.

5 out of 5 stars wow, tough crowd.......2007-04-02

boy, i don't get some of these reviews at all. this cd is amazing! every track is a mini-masterpiece, and n'dea has never sounded better. i am particularly enamored with the track, "I've Been Touched," which starts out sweetly low-key but steadily builds into a good old jam. if you've ever been a fan of The Brand New Heavies, you can't go wrong with this disc.

4 out of 5 stars A Blast From The Past.......2007-03-29

Like one of the previous reviewers added: this is a real group playing real instruments. This CD is a wholesome change from whats out there now musically. They bring back that natural funk flavor. Out of the 12 songs 9 are really solid (1,2,3,6,7,8,9,11,12). My favorites were "Get used to it" no.3 & "We won't stop" no.6. The 8th joint takes a thinly veiled shot at the techno enhanced music of the day. On the 7th cut they actually mention how they were attempting to bring funk back into music. N'dea returned with superb vocals after a long hiatus. She put icing on the cake, and she's still as seductive as ever.

4 out of 5 stars Brand New?.......2007-03-11

I first saw them on BET Jazz--singing one song and fell in love with them. I like this cd a lot!

5 out of 5 stars CD review.......2007-03-10

Truly talented musicians. You can never go wrong with the Brand New Heavies.

5 out of 5 stars Don't understand some of the reviews on here!.......2007-02-18

This is a true band that actually plays real instruments, no samples, real horns, true acid jazz and R&B with a lead singer that will knock you down with her voice, and people have the nerve to say it's "underwhelming" and "boring". Welcome to how it used to be and should be again, folks! I saw TBNH at the Apollo last October and they the word "amazing" isn't good enough! It's been a long time since I've been to a concert where the entire crowd was on it's feet dancing from the first song to the last! N'Dea is back home where she belongs, and this CD proves it! The rest of you can go back to buying sampled artists who use all electronic junk, I'll stick with the "real deal", thank you!
