Album Description

This double LP, which was trumpeter Lee Morgan's next-to-last recording, contains four lengthy side-long explorations by the trumpeter's regular quintet of the period (with Bennie Maupin on tenor, flute and bass clarinet, pianist Harold Mabern, bassist Jymie Merritt and drummer Mickey Roker). The music is very modal-oriented and probably disappointed many of Morgan's longtime fans but he had gotten tired of playing the same hard bop-styled music that he had excelled at during the past decade and was searching for newer sounds. The influence of the avant-garde and early fusion is also felt in spots but the trumpeter's sound was still very much intact and he takes some fiery solos that still sound lively decades later.

Players Include:
Lee Morgan (trumpet)
Bennie Maupin (flute, tenor saxophone)
Harold Mabern (piano)
Jymie Merritt (bass)
Mickey Roker (drums)
Jack DeJohnette (drums)

5 out of 5 stars Good on vinyl; better and complete on CD.......2006-01-01

The music on this album, even in its LP version, was the sort that made West Coast listeners wonder why "East Coast guys" seemed to play so much HARDER than other folks recorded at the same venue.

Lee was at the top of his post-Messengers form, and Maupin's work is among his best, even looking back from today, thirty-five years later. The rhythm section cooks, and Blue Note did NOT edit the songs down into "pop" length, even on the double LP.

There's a marvelous slow piece, "Neophilia" ("love of the new") featuring Lee's rarely heard and gorgeous fleugelhorn and Maupin's bass clarinet, rarely heard outside of his Davis/Hancock dates. (Why isn't this tune a standard by now?!?) and Lee's uptempo "soul-jazz" standards (added to the box set) including one on which an eager Jack DeJohnette guests on drums, champing at the bit. HARD post-bop lived!

Sad to think, these many years later, what else Morgan, and this band might have gone on to do....

4 out of 5 stars Not your 60's Morgan.......2004-09-03

Lee Morgan was listening to the Miles Quintet and was ready to leave his 'Sidewinder' days behind. That says a lot about the man who was expected to write bogaloo songs for the rest of his career. This is a different kind of Lee Morgan record, and a little diffcult at first if you are expecting a classic hard bop live album. Thanks to Blue Note for releasing a 3 CD, documenting the best of 3 nights at the Lighthouse. The sound is not the best it could be, you need to crank it up, but that is the only minor flaw for a stellar release.

5 out of 5 stars Lee Lightin' Up The Lighthouse.......2002-02-02

This is by far one of the better jazz albums ever assembled. If you're a fan of Lee's "Rumproller" and "Cornbread" albums, you will love this one. The groove of these live performance couldn't be generated in a studio. This isn't just Lee Morgan's music, this is his soul poured on this album.

4 out of 5 stars Approaching greatness.......2000-11-17

"Live at the Lighthouse" is a wonderful live album from the decidedly deceased Lee Morgan. It falls short of greatness for the simple reason that the "head-solo-solo-head" format was getting a bit old on folks at that time (and now as well!)But that criticism aside there is some terrific jazz being played on these three CD's.I won't list the tracks but the closing version of "Sidewinder" is worth the entry fee alone. The only real bummer is the self-serving liner note written by Benny Maupin. Great player that Benny is, he should let his sax do the talking. I mean Lee was his greatest friend ever on Earth but he missed his funeral because of "..performance commitments.."?? Come on Benny, you'll need something better than that!

5 out of 5 stars Great Late Lee.......2000-09-23

Lee Morgan's "Live At The Lighthouse" is great look at the master trumpeter in the year before his tragic murder at the hands of his common-law wife. Originally released as a posthumous double LP, this is the kind of release we were all promised with the advent of the compact disc! Three discs packed full with more than an hour of music each, half of the songs previously unreleased, and improved, remastered sound. Joining Lee on this voluminous set are Bennie Maupin (on tenor sax, bass clarinet and flute), Harold Mabern (on piano), Jymie Merritt (on bass) and Mickey Roker (on drums, with Jack DeJohnette replacing him on a few tracks). The material covered on these discs is typical, classic late Lee. Always the tireless innovator, he only returned to two of his mid 60s Blue Note hits, "The Sidewinder" and "Speedball." The rest of the tunes are new, and exemplify the modern innovations and directions Lee was taking his music in the new decade of the 70s. Along with "The Last Session" and Larry Young's "Mother Ship" (currently unavailable on CD), "Live At The Lighthouse" paints the final portrait of a jazz great taken from this world all to soon.

Excellent live from grant a lil short but it s a pure moment of jazz guitar

5 out of 5 stars Best Grant Green Live Album Ever.......2006-05-12

I disagree with the other reviewers that this is not on par with Green's "Alive." In fact, it's much better--possibly the best live jazz album in my collection (and with a collection that includes Miles Davis's 1964 Concert, that's saying something). You can really tell it just all came together for Green and his band that night some 34 years ago. Every time I listen to it I feel bad there aren't another 5 or 6 songs on the CD--but then I just start it over again. The playing on this album is AWESOME, and everyone was great, though the drummer, Greg Williams, and the bass player, William Felder really delivered sterling performances. A must-have for any jazz fan.

3 out of 5 stars Get Alive Instead.......2005-10-27

Much as I like Grant Green's funky jazz cd's, I really didn't like this one. If you want to hear a good live, funky set, get Grant Green "Alive" instead. It is much better than this one.

4 out of 5 stars GRANT GREEN +LIVE+1972= FUNKY GOOD TIME.......2004-08-23

What's wrong with this album? NOTHING!! Well, it is missing Idris Muhammad on drums, but other than that it's great. I do like "Alive" better, but I played that one to death. Now I can go back to it with fresh ears. I hesitated to pick this up because of all the negative reaction by people who were really into Alive, but DAMN! this is good stuff. Come on people this is Grant Green!! Live!! and at the funky high-light of his career. I am also a big fan of Wilton Felder's bass playing and he is all over this album. To all the people that gave this 1 or 2 stars- "Put down the Kenny G and give this another listen"- Dig it!

5 out of 5 stars great album...don't listen to the naysayers.......2003-01-17

I gotta say this is one of the best Grant Green funk albums you'll ever find. I saw that some reviewers said that the playing is sloppy and unfocused on this album. I don't think anything could be further from the truth!!! I own over 50 albums that feature Grant Green and I say this is definately one of his best. From a musicians standpoint, I don't think Green has ever been more inventive on an album. This is way more funky that his earlier blue note work and he uses his guitar more like a snare drum on this album. It is absolutely amazing and completely innovative. I admit that the saxaphone solos are pretty bland on this album but it's really Green who shines. Buy this album if you are even the slighest Grant Green fan...you'll not be dissapointed!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Sounds Album You Can Find.......2000-06-13

this cd is superb. it is right in the transision of the sounds move from their early soul/jazz to their later funky sounds. the dynamics are superior, moving from calm to explosive all the time, especialy on "summertime". new drummer donald baily fits in perfectly and is as good or better than he was on any jimmy smith recording. 5 of the tracks we not recorded live and have organ dubbed over. i love those tracks, but may not be for all tastes. "why am i treated so bad" is as funky as they get, where "june night" is as soulfully smooth as they get. neither extremes sound cheezy like a lot of soul/jazz and funk/jazz can. great cd

5 out of 5 stars one of the top jazz albums ever recorded..........2007-06-14

The Jazz Crusaders before they dropped the Jazz in their name and just became The Crusaders. Recorded shortly after moving to LA from Houston this jazz group is smokin hot. This album has been noted to be one of the top 100 jazz albums of all time. Can't argue with that. Their music weaves together and they accompany each other so well. Awesome. The Crusaders are my favorite jazz groups and this album is at the top of the list.

5 out of 5 stars One of those magic albums!.......2000-04-25

This is one of those live jazz albums that truly captures the ambiance of "being there". The recording truly gives that three-dimensional sound that is missing from so many live albums. And the performances are full of energy. A great companion to this album is the "Live '68" album, unfortunately not yet on CD

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums in my collection of Crusaders stuff.......1999-06-24

The cut "You Don't Know What Love Is" boasts of one of the most soul-full tenor sax solos by Wilton Felder. The trombone of Wayne Henderson is very smooth, too. "Scratch" is very upbeat. The way that Felder and Henderson play harmonys, and unisons, with one another is a Crusaders trademark sound. This "sound" is well presented on this album. "Milestones" and "Doin' That Thing" are also great cuts as are "Blues Up Tight" and "Miss It". On the whole one of their finest efforts. I recommend this album, and the Crusaders, to anyone and everyone who likes good jazz.

This 2 CD set is not "Live at the Lighthouse" Hermosa Beach California in 1970. All the available recordings from that have been released on the magnificent Bluenote 3CD set. This is in fact 2 sets recorded at the 'Both/And' club in San Francisco some time in the two weeks before the Hermosa Beach gig. It was recorded for later radio broadcast and is of inferior sound quality to the Bluenote recordings, though quite reasonable. The playing is, however, at the same stratospheric levels as the Lighthouse with the added bonus of several songs not on on that set. Only 4 stars cause I give 5 to the Bluenote set
