From Jazziz
Subtitled "Compositions for Ensemble," this latest recording from folk-banjo free-improvisor Chadbourne includes a mixture of the strangest instruments: mandolin (played by Gino Robair), Stradivarius saw (Paul Lovens), an oboe, a bassoon, a balalaika, a violin, a tuba, "bargain electronics," and a Casio Rap Man. On top of this, Chadbourne has cut-and-pasted various sessions together. Sounding a bit like Zorn's game pieces, the five compositions, part of a larger recording project, are, however, clearly marked off into segments. But what of the insects of the title? The instruments do chirp from time to time, and the music may sound "macroscopic": The individual performers stand out clearly, perhaps revealing a many legged world of termites, praying mantises, and crickets. One hears this through Chadbourne's economic dosing of the many sounds - rarely do more than five musicians play at a time. The music, neither pretty nor polished, portrays a place where controlled chaos becomes a fascinating art, where all the discrete sounds - atmospheric vibraphone and squeaky oboe - make up a sonic universe. It's full of inspired and quirky playing, especially from Carrie Shull on oboe and Chadborne himself, who is downright charming when plucking bluegrass or a section of Monk's "Epistrophy" on his "The Cricket in My Life." Leo, release the rest of this project!

Customer Reviews:
Chadbourne entirely too unknown to Amazon listeners . . ........2003-10-28
A confession. Eugene Chadbourne is about as far from my socio-political orientation as a man can be.
Yet . . . yet . . .
. . . he makes music of importance. Far be it from me to dismiss a man simply because his politics is unsustainable.
Anyone who aspires to familiarity with avant-garde jazz should have at least some familiarity with Eugene Chadbourne. A true iconoclast, he makes entirely listenable music from the most unlikely components, including such bizarreness as Moroccan bugle, home-made clarinet, electric toaster, Stradivarius saw, bargain electronics, Electric Ladybug, "synthesizer made by someone's father." Ahem.
Quirky, skittish, rhythmically challenging (if not challenged!), genuinely idiosyncratic, Eugene Chadbourne's music never fails to engage, even while it goes off in ten different directions at once. The amazing thing is that it makes any sense at all. This is certainly a product of Chadbourne's trial-and-error recording method combined with some kind of inherent genius of soundscape-organization. The only other composer/musician who comes anywhere near Chadbourne in terms of intelligble bizarreness of soundscape configuration is John Rapson.
If you have even the slightest interest in avant-garde jazz, I suggest you hook up with Eugene Chadbourne. This is as good as any place to start.
