Why a nonet? Because this combination of nine players gives the driving swing of a big band with the improvizational flexibility of a small group. All the musicians on this recording are superb. Personnel include Jim Cifelli as leader, composer trumpeter and flugelhornist; Andy Gravish, trumpet and flugelhorn; Cliff Lyons, alto and soprano sax; Barbara Cifelli, bari sax, C and alto flute and bass clarinet; Joel Frahm, tenor sax; Pete McCann, guitar; Mary Ann McSweeney, bass; and Tim Horner, drums.

Most of the eight selections are Jim Cifelli compositions with the exception of Fe Fi Fo Fum/Epeak No Evil and Cole Porter's What Is this Thing Called Love?

If you like tight, swinging arrangements and soaring trumpets, this album is for you. I was particularly impressed with the baritone saxophone work of Barbara Cifelli, Peter McCann's tasteful guitar and the string bass work of Mary Ann McSweeney.

Poindexter (who wrote the review underneath this one) has no freakin' idea what he's talking about. The Witnesses are a dynamic band with great ideas and more soul than every other fake ass "rock and roll revival" band around. Amazing rhythm section, excellently complimented by the dual guitar, organ assault. The three excellent singers provide sharp soulful vocals. Sure, you could complain that they're not mining any new territory, but exactly what band is? Even the most "experimental" sounds in music these days have obvious predecessors in 60s and 70s bands. The Witnesses are just more honest than these jokers who think drum loops and a moog equal innovation. They write and perform blistering songs that are more fun than a bunch of monkeys at a keg party.

so bad it hurts. a few years ago I thought maybe these guys would amount to something, but it's clear now, they arent' really going anywhere, musically, or in their career. this is some seriously retread stuff here. as generic as it gets. destined for bargain bins everywhere

What can I say? You just have to hear it for yourself! Pick any one track and listen to it three times - you'll be hooked. Or, listen to 'Time for You' twice - or - 'Stop Pretending' a couple of times... Gotta stop this, or I'll have listed every track.

These guys (and, yes, I count Bonnie as one of the guys)know what they're doing, what's been done before, what's worth doing again, and what's needed for originality. They're literate, even - musically AND lyrically! I happen to know that at least one of them reads Martin Amis.

I've listened to a whole lot of rock music in my day - bands like The Witnesses live and breathe the essence that keeps this genre constantly re-invigorated. They are a Rock Band through and through.

When I read that September 2002 issue of New York Magazine, The Witnesses were one of the bands featured. I soon checked them out live at Mercury Lounge and thought they were great. They reminded me of an East Coast version of The Vue or Big Midnight. These are all bands obsessed with The Rolling Stones and the Blues. I was supposed to interview The Witnesses for Free Williamsburg later that year, but things didn't work out. At the time they only had a self-released EP available. At the time they were a really fun band with a lot of talent and known for weird behavior. Two years later they have better songs. Oakley Munson still has the big hair. Now keyboardist, Bonnie Bloomgarden is more of a regular singer. Some old songs like "Stop Pretending" still seem exciting. The Witnesses may be the last band from that class of 2002 who needs to be discovered by a larger public.

A friend of mine suggested this cd to me, and I had NEVER heard of them or heard them play before. I popped C.T.C. in my player, and was blown away. These guys definitely have that funk/rock edge down, (similar to 311). But if you want a good fun summer album, this is your pick.

i heard c.t.c. and i thought 'this is awesome!' so i went to the store and bought it. when i brought it home i realized it wasn't what i thought it would be. 'c.t.c.' is by far the best song, and 'lonely guy' is a very convincing james brown impression, but other then that, they all start to sound the same.

The Channel Surfers, with a sound that compares to 311, Silage, and Reality Check, are going to only get better. For those of you going through Reality Check withdrawal, this band could be the answer to your problems. I'm looking forward to hearing their new CD which is coming out soon.

I remember when I first got out of school, I was a little depressed because I thought I would miss all my friends. But when I got this cd and listened to C.T.C., I knew that summer was here and I was ready for it. It really got me fired up. I had been so used to the fixed schedules and such of the year, that it was almost a shock going back to the relaxation of summer. But this cd really got me in the mood for it.

      I have always been a huge fan of hip-hop and when i became a christian i didnt want to listen to the rap i was listening to. So i went on a mission to find good christian rap, well TUNNEL RATS are the best! The talent of these emcees is comparable to anyone making it big on MTV right now, its just a shame nobody hears about them. Look for the members solo efforts, Sev Statik, Raphi, New Breed, and LPG all have their own albums and they do not disappoint. Enjoy every this cd from intro to last track and dont forget to share it, make people believe in christian rap, show them other cds on my listmania as well.

      I got this album after hearing the opening track, which impressed me lots. I have been a fan of hip hop for a few years, but prefer old school stuff like Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa and Run DMC. The Tunnel Rats are the first new school stuff I've got, and I got to say they have the skills needed to improve the Christian hip hop scene. Great lyrical skills are displayed by all MCs, Big respect to The Tunnel Rats.

      What else can I say. The Tunnel Rats hit you with music with a message, purpose, vision, and annointing. The foundation: Jesus Christ. The foundation for mainstream rap today: hedonism. This product exhibits some of the best lyricism and production that rivals the best of hip-hop albums past and present. From Sev Statik to New Breed to LPG to Raphi and Zane - everyone who touched the mic on this production ripped it! And you thought that holy hip-hop was soft - listen to "2 Cents," "One's Who Do," and "One's Who Don't" and then talk to me. T.R.'z proclaim the name of Christ and His values with all the talent and ability that you've NEVER witnessed...It never leaves my 12 disc!

      You can't describe the TR'z 'sides rap veterans with madd skillz. This is THE crew. LPG are two of the best emcees this world will ever see. Raphi and New Breed hold it down like I don't know what. Sev Statik and Elsie can rap, too. Dax Reynosa of LPG can sing, too. Who'd o' thought? Dert brings insane beats I've never heard anything like before. This is one crew you won't forget. If you think this cd ain't tight, man... forget you. I'm from the dirty south and most of 'em are west coasters... but that's obviously irrelevant, being that these are some o' the greatest emcees the world will ever see. You can't dis the rats... period. Listen to the tracks:"TR'z" and "Bow Down." You'll see.

            Excellent music from this fusion band headed by Gerald Veasley before he went solo. Philly's answer to Weather Report (the Jaco version). Lots of cool textures, exotic flavors, tight grooves and full-tilt playing back up a collection of tasty compositions. It's a shame this CD is OOP.
