This is the fourth album for the Canadian jazz-rock quartet, a tight-knit band that's been together since 1997 when the Vancouver pair of trumpeter-keyboard player Brad Turner and bassist Chris Tarry first teamed up with New York resident drummer Ian Froman and Toronto saxophonist Mike Murley. The band's style comes directly from Miles Davis's electric bands and their more significant offshoots, and there's enough funk in the current mix to suggest Medeski Martin & Wood as well. Here the band has some very special guests along on a few tunes--John Scofield, DJ Logic, and Mino Cinelu--and the results are sensational. Cinelu adds percolating metallic percussion to the band's already potent rhythms on four tunes, including the extended "Steeplejack." Scofield's solos bubble across the band's grooves on "Strollin'" and "Bumpus," while "New Pants," with Scofield and Logic, is a wittily funky feature for Turner's trumpet. The band's strong roots in acoustic jazz come to the fore on "Mr. Mike," a track that highlights Murley's smoothly swinging tenor. The Recline is a good introduction to a band with its own identity. The guest stars might get your attention, but Metalwood can hold it as well. --Stuart Broomer

Enjoy good old hardcore punk rock? Like to laugh? Get this CD.......2007-05-26
If you have seen the documentary, The Decline of Western Civilization, which covered the LA punk rock scene around 1982 or so, or heard the sound track, you MUST buy this CD. Take all those classic songs, and the clips of them talking with the bands, and fans, then, shake it with a huge dose of retro-lounge, and you get this CD.
For those of you into the old LA hardcore bands, this CD will be a joy. You have to love the re-working of the interview with the Germ's manager.
So, if you love punk rock, or enjoyed Decline, get this CD. You will not regret it.
The originals..........2007-03-11
Black Velvet Flag were a great band that were doing comedic lounge covers of classic punks songs...long before this Richard Cheese fellow came along and picked up the shtick. The were amazing live and this recording is excellent! The other reviews here complain of the interview tidbits-those are all paradies of the interviews in the documentary film Decline of Western Civilization, which the name and cover of this recording are mocking. It's brilliant. I've never gotten tired of this. I wish they were still around.
Save your money and time.......2005-08-16
Quite possibly the worst CD I've ever heard..No actually the worst cd I ever heard.
There is no rhythm, no rhyme, no talent, on a scale of one to ten I give it a 1 for coming up with the idea..but the musical KAPOW never quite happened. There is too much time spent on interviews...more than likely to fill the otherwise hollow tracks..and the band..and the singer. Just say NO!
I hated this cd so much that I should just give it for free to the first person who wants it however I feel so strongly about the quality of it that I refuse to do anything other than put on high in the microwave for fifteen minutes.
Insidiously catchy (or was that kitschy).......2005-08-15
I'm very fond of this CD, particularly the cover of "Institutionalized." I can only hope that the interviews, however, were an attempt to poke fun at posers - skip 'em. The lounge-style covers of venerable punk tunes actually works, though.
Pure Torture.......2004-10-04
This is one of the worst CDs I've ever heard. Pure torture. I know it's supposed to be a joke but the singer's voice is so painfully off key that you'll be screaming for mercy after about 30 seconds. I'm sure glad I wasn't one of the six people in the audience the day this was recorded. Just horrible.

Perfect mix of jazz and electric funk.......2006-08-01
This group has the perfect mix between jazz and funk. The compositions are fun to listen to, and can't be compared to any jazz or funk that I've heard. Brad Turner uses synths and electric piano liberally, but tastefully. His trumpet playing is also shown on this CD, which he is also very talented with. The other players, who I had not heard of before, were surprisingly solid and skillful in their playing.
Jazz-Funk of the Highest Order.......2002-08-24
I'm new to Metalwood, and I don't know a whole lot about them. I do know that Ian Froman is a great drummer, and that he has appeared on several discs by Tommy Smith, the fine British tenor saxophonist. I also know of Mike Murley. He's a Canadian, I believe, and has been active on that jazz scene for quite a few years. The other two players, Brad Turner, trumpet and keys, and Chris Terry, el. bass, I've never heard before.
What first struck me is how jazz-oriented they are for a funk outfit--which is both suprising and good, in my opinion. In that regard, they remind me a little of Voodoo Dogs, the exceptional band of Larry Goldings and Bob Ward. I suppose it's because Metalwood comes from a straight ahead jazz background and aesthetic. But you don't always get a proper jazz grounding in these funk groups (e.g., check out some of the rather mediocre jazz-funk outings of John Scofield who, BTW, makes three effective guest appearances here).
Murley, especially, seems to keep things properly oriented in a jazz direction. He sounds very confident and assured, whether playing as part of the ensemble or soloing. Attractive tunes, telepathic interaction, great grooves, some tasty percussion by guest Mino Cinelu, and it all adds up to a killer performance. Don't miss out on this one.

I should give it a higher rating just for the cover........2006-01-23
The cover could be the finest take off on a punk album cover ever. Meanwhile, it's the same story for MANIC HISPANIC, great idea to play really tight, change the lyrics of classic punk songs to Chicano humor lyrics and make records and do gigs.
This is their 2nd record. 2001. I saw them that year I'm pretty sure. I saw them 3 times earlier in the 2000's and I thought they were one of the best live punk bands, probably the best one doin' shows now. I gotta admit, the HIVES do a great live gig too, also full of energy and bringing their songs totally to life live, just like MANIC HISPANIC. The difference is, MANIC HISPANIC just doesn't make records that bear listening to again, least for me. I've rarely listened to any of their albums more than 1 or 2 times.
A real shame cuz this coulda really worked if they'd figured out how to get that great feeling and sound of their live shows onto the albums. chrisbct@hotmail.com
Hysterical.......2002-01-13
if you are or you were ever into punk, this album will crack you up. the songs are not only covered well with funny lyrics, but the voices are SO well impersonated. If mike ness was mexican, he would be singing "mommy's little cholo" without a doubt

Too basic, too popular.......2002-04-19
If you listen to ambient/downtempo/chill-out music at all, you've likely already got half of these tracks on something else. The remixes aren't so stunning that you can't bypass this disc, and the songs are far too popular to be a smart buy for DJs or music heads. You've probably already made a mix tape better than this out of your own collection already.
Dig a little deeper next time for the tracks we don't already have, guys.
another choice compilation from six degrees.......2002-01-24
six degrees has the compilation thing down. over the past ten years, they have released under one label or another tons and tons of world beat and fusion music. this particular compilation pulls together original and remixed tracks from such acts as dzihan and kamien, euphoria, and dj cam. the result is a funked up version of your usual chilled grooves. while it is a compilation, and hard to judge on it, the tracks on this album are tight and sexy, a great introduction to the beat world of six degrees.
