Well, here is a ten!.......2005-03-02
I heard Blood Sutra first, and ended up loving it. So I thought I'd go back and check out this one, Panoptic Modes, and it quickly became a favorite, and cemented my respect for Vijay and Rudresh. This is art that I had not expected. At one point, during the very first listen, I screamed in my car, not really believing that they were actually doing this. It was very moving, and continues to be. For me, I sense an honesty and love that really kicks things up a notch.
I guess that there is a chance that this sort of sound just isn't your thing, sure. I've got plenty of friends that I know would not really connect. But damn, for a jazz lover with an open ear, this is stuff that must be heard. I'm very much looking forward to following these fine artists.
Extravagantly gifted pianist.......2003-02-28
New Yorker Magazine: 1 of 2001's best jazz albums. Iyer is an extravagantly gifted new-jazz pianist and a quick-witted composer, but his greatest strength is his skill as a bandleader. On this captivating quartet recording, he establishes a lock-tight rapport with his energetic rhythm section and a cognitive interaction with the alto saxophonist Rudresh Mahantappa, another talent to keep a steady eye on.
Excellent.......2002-07-30
I took a chance by buying this CD based on a bunch of reviews here and there on the Internet. This is the most unique and refreshing Jazz album I have heard in a long time. I'm hoping that I can catch this band live...cause every person in this quartet plays with precision and emotion...
Strong brew.......2002-03-08
More evidence, if any were needed, that the dark, tenebrous piano playing of Powell, Monk, Waldron & Andrew Hill is still with us; this album is in many ways comparable to Jason Moran's work on Blue Note. Iyer isn't the technician that Moran is, nor has he got the interest in more fleet players like Jaki Byard, but he has a very clear idea of what he's doing. His band here is very good, with the excellent alto player, Rudresh Mahanthappa, splitting the difference between modern players like Osby & Steve Coleman, & the high drama of great 1960s voices like Coltrane & Sam Rivers. With the drummer often recalling Elvin Jones with his barrages of triplets, & Iyer drawing on Tyner's thunderous chording, this album indeed does borrow importantly from Coltrane's legacy--inevitable I suppose given that Iyer draws extensively on Indian music here, a major influence on Coltrane. I hear you groan--"yet _another_ album indebted to Coltrane!"--& yet this comes off as highly original & independent of vision. The album is somewhat too unrelieved in impact--there are some delicate moments, but basically it's full-tilt from the opening (the first track, "Invocation", doubles in volume after the relatively contained intro, & had me diving for the volume knob); & yet I find it an enormously promising disc which suggests Iyer's got the potential to be a very special player. Do try: don't expect a comfortable hour of music, but _do_ expect something that engages the ears & mind.

Just listen to the samples --- they speak for themselves - This CD is a trip and continues to grow as it goes along ~ This is what's happening now in Jazz. Check it out. Very Cool! --
NEW Jazz.......2005-05-03
I disagree. This is new music at it best, mixing the world's great musics in new and inventive ways. I think the lyricist is a nice touch, using a kind of slam poet/freestyle that is really hot. Also, if you list a dancer in your liner notes you know what's up.
As for Steve's playing, he and Osby are the new players. Everyone else is just copping Bird, Cannonball, and Trane licks.
Ralph Alessi (bad trumpet, BAD), Andy Milne (piano/keyboards), Reggie Washington (bass), Gene Lake (drums), Vijay Iyer (keyboards), Miya Masaoka (koto), Josh Jones (percussion),Ramesh Shotham (Indian percussion), Kokayi (lyricist), Yassir Chadly (vocals, percussion) and Laila (dance).
Too mainstream.......1999-08-31
I used to love Coleman's earlier, more unknown works. Stuff like, "Answering Machine messages" and "Ocean Sounds", the albums he recorded in his garage and sold out of the back of his car. This new album does have that same feel, but Coleman's music is being watered down by it's mass market appeal. Go back to being unheard of. Till then, I'll be listening to Parker.

The Jazz French Horn - it Does Exist!!!.......2007-02-25
This CD should be mandatory listening for anyone who wants to learn to play French Horn. If it can be done, you can do it too. And Julius Watkins did it - playing jazz! What a swinging, inventive, beautifully-toned soloist. "Dancing on the Ceiling" will tell you all you need to know.
As an added caveat, the arranging on this CD is fascinating - shout choruses, send-offs, interludes, intros and ending are woven in beautifully to the tunes, with Watkins and Tenorman Charlie Rouse playing off each other like dolphins in the seas. First-class music.
Warm and exotic blast from the past.......2005-10-26
As a kid, I somehow wound up with a number of LP's from the tiny Dawn label. The sounds were of such a high quality that 35 years later they were still receiving spins on my turntable. To discover these recordings reissued on CD and to have them back in hand is a satisfying slap on the face of time.
Les Jazz Modes complemented the unusual sound of a tenor sax/French horn frontline with instruments such as harp and wordless human voice. The free and open feeling of the song forms belied their 12 and 32-bar structures, thanks in part to fugal textures and colorful orchestrations. Yet, as the presence of musicians like Oscar Pettiford, Paul Chambers, Art Taylor and Chano Pozo should testify, these were musicians who could swing and reflect the tradition.
About horn player Julius Watkins, I'm reminded of Dr. Johnson's comparison of a woman preacher to a dog walking on its hind legs: "It is not done well, but you are surprised to find it done at all." As sexist as the comment is, I'm afraid it has some application to Julius Watkins' playing. He's a fine musician, but his contribution owes as much to the unique tonal characteristics of his instrument as to his melodic ideas and execution. The French horn still sounds rather cumbersome when it attempts to play anything close to bebop. It's Charlie Rouse, a truly underrated and formidable tenor saxophonist, who takes up the slack and then some. A player practically unmatched for ceaselessly inventive, swinging and soulful melodic lines and for lightning fast articulations, he's at once the spark and life of the entire enterprise.
You don't have to be a francophile to relate to this music, though being a Frenchman may not hurt. This is mainstream American jazz, a music that has frequently found a more receptive audience on Napoleon's soil than our own. (Start with the second disc, which is easily the superior of the two.)

Album Description
"Juez is a klezmer-breakbeat-jazz band of Orthodox kids from Washington, DC and Brooklyn, NY. The four-member ensemble's influences range from Yemenite niggunim to hip-hip; from John Zorn to DJ Shadow. Onstage, they resemble a punk band, with manic solos, frenzied interplay, audience call-and-responses and stage-diving. Juez is totally sweet!" -- Matthue Roth, Zeek Magazine
Customer Reviews:
best new stuff in a while.......2004-04-30
This may be a lengthy review...
THUMBS UP:
Juez sounds like a eclectic mix of early Miles Davis, Eric Dolphy mellowness, and skat, with a dab of classic rock roots (some irregular Rush time signatures? Some Chicago-like horn passages?). Which is cool. It has some hints of the cool timing variations of Dave Brubeck and the like. The distotred/dirty bass on a few tracks is clear and refrshingly well-perfromed. When have you heard good bass in a song lately?
SOME SUGGESTIONS:
The recording was well-done but could have offered a little more sound space diversity. It seems like the Alto Sax is always on the left, with the trumpet on the right. With the mood this record is portraying, it could have involved a little more experimentation. The drums sound as if they were recorded dry with close miking, giving the overall sound a more intimiate, less-than-live feeling (given the live nature of this band, was this the intention?). Some natural room acoustics would have greatly helped in some spots.
THE VERDICT:
A great performance from what sounds like a live band going directly to tape (i.e., it sounds far from "canned" with lots of BS studio production)! I'm happy to add this to my Jazz collection, if you can call it that.
