The very smart, very open improvisation on this record never gets precious, nor does it wander so far that the listener feels hung out to dry. The opening groove of the second track, Pivot, will suck you in and set you up for some of the subtler, more experimental pleasures here. All of the players have superb sounds, and while D'Amato's bass is punchy, it's not overly dominant the way some bass-playing bandleaders insist.
