About the Artist
Jazz composer, arranger and conductor David Berger is recognized internationally as a leading authority on the music of Duke Ellington and the Swing Era. Conductor and arranger for the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra from its inception in 1988 through 1994, Berger has transcribed more than 700 full scores of classic recordings including nearly 500 works by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn.
In 1996 Berger collaborated with choreographer Donald Byrd to create the Harlem Nutcracker, a full-length 2-hour dance piece that expands the Tchaikovsky/Ellington/Strayhorn score into an American classic. The 15-piece band assembled to play this show has stayed together and continues to play Mr. Berger's music for listeners and swing dancers all over the United States and Europe. The Sultans of Swing featuring vocalist Aria Hendricks have 3 CD's out on the Such Sweet Thunder label. In addition to concert, club, recording and private work in the NY metropolitan area, upcoming tours include Europe, the West Coast and the South. Berger has written music for television, Broadway shows, including Sophisticated Ladies; films, including The Cotton Club and Brighton Beach Memoirs; dozens of singers, bands, orchestras and dance companies. Beside Mr. Byrd, Berger maintains close, long-term working relationships with Wynton Marsalis and Quincy Jones.
David Berger's jazz compositions and arrangements and transcriptions are played by hundreds of bands every day all over the world. A seven-time recipient of National Endowment for the Arts fellowships, Berger resides in New York City where he teaches at the Julliard School.
Product Description
To get straight to the point, this is some of the best big-band writing and playing you're likely to hear; the best I've heard from a new band since Thad Jones-Mel Lewis. There is a marvelous variety of moods and textures here, and not a note that doesn't contribute to the whole. This is music that one wants to hear again and again; this is not a CD that will gather dust on the shelf. Marlowe is as compelling in his musical incarnation as on the page or screen. Maybe more so, because this piece is as good or better even after you know how it ends. The music David Berger and his dedicated company have brought us here is that rarest of contemporary works of art: the real thing. Hear it well. It's got the message.

Album Description
Ira Marlowe's first release on Brainy Tunes Records was a winner of the 2006 Parents' Choice Silver Honor. It features 13 songs which are not only full of wonder and imagination, but also challenging and educational. Titles include "Molly the Moose", about a jailbreak from the Bronx Zoo, "The Teasing Bird", in which a nasty bird, weighed down by negativity, finds it can no longer fly, "Krinkledinks and Grodsnips", about tiny monsters who learn to co-exist beneath a bathroom mat, and "There Once Was A Bagel", in which a breakfast staple defies the laws of both gravity and common sense. In addition are highly informative songs such as "Kangaroo", "All About the Moon" and "The Planets' Song". The Brainy Tunes philosophy is to never condescend to kids but rather to challenge them, including bits of material just enough over their heads to trigger questions and curiosity. Above all, we take pride in creating music that parents will want to hear as often as their kids will want to play it.Customer Reviews:

This lovely work is a setting of the standard Friday evening Sabbath service, and it will be familiar to Jews everywhere. Of course, all of the tunes are original, though as always with Bloch's Jewish works, there is a strong flavor of the Far East in the cast of his harmony. There isn't very much high quality Jewish sacred music. There have always been plenty of Jewish composers, but until the second half of this century, the circumstances of the Diaspora militated against the security and accumulation of wealth that a large musical establishment operating out of a synagogue necessarily requires. Of all of the more recent settings of the Jewish liturgy, this is the finest, and this performance is also the best it has ever received. --David Hurwitz

The NBC Broadcast Concerts, December 1950

Guido Cantelli -- Another Testament to Greatness.......2004-02-28
But let's get to the title at hand. There are three things that I love about this set. First, because Cantelli left us with so few studio recordings, just hearing him play more music in the first place is a miracle. Second, many of the works featured here are earlier accounts of pieces he later did record in the studio -- Mozart's "A Musical Joke," Haydn's 93rd and Beethoven's 5th Symphonies in this case (though the latter was unfinished). It is delightful to experience Cantelli's multiple accounts of these works, something we take for granted with conductors like Furtwangler, Bernstein or Karajan. Finally, it is great to hear Cantelli tackle such diverse material with the NBC Symphony Orchestra, from baroque composers like Vivaldi, Corelli and Geminiani to modern masters like Milhaud, Schuman and Dallapiccola.
With that being said, there are also three things that keep me from giving this set a fifth star. First, the mono sound is very good, but certainly will not be of a high enough quality to please everyone. Second, each disc has been structured to include one day's broadcast performance, for example the four featured here are December 4, 11, 18 & 25, 1950. The unfortunate result of showcasing each day on its own disc is that they each log in at (comfortably) under an hour. In fact, the broadcasts are short enough to squeeze this set on to three discs, but of course performances from different days would overlap on a given disc. Which brings me to my third and final point, when paying full-price times four discs for this title, surely many of us (yours truly included) would rather pay less and deal with combined sessions on only three discs.
In all, though this is a welcome release and I look forward to the issue of Cantelli NBC Broadcasts from later in the 1950s. In this era of homogenized collections, it is essential for a label like Testament to continue to save the future of classical by rescuing great music from the past.
