    Album Description

Between dozens of recordings made from 1937 to 1950, legendary French gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt waxed one, maybe two titlesof solo guitar per year. Often it was less than that. Sometimes he made them at the request of the producers, who surely heard him warming up and decided to capture on records some of that magic atmosphere. Then Django took his instrument and performed whatever was on his mind: in occasions fully developed solo compositions; another times, instantly made up improvisations. This outstanding CD comprises them all for the first time in chronological order, including some very rare tracks and a recently discovered solo from a radio program as a bonus track. Definitive. 2005.

    Album Description

"On A Tribute to Gypsy Swing, the Austrian-born guitarist burns up the fretboard with astounding technique that combines strength, speed, finesse, and soul into one scintillating package." -BILL MILKOWSKI

A Roma gypsy living in Vienna, Harri Stojka is one of the leading gypsy swing guitarists in Europe, with several European releases and a substantial international touring presence. On A Tribute to Gypsy Swing, his first stateside release and Zoho debut, Stojka presents his highly virtuosic and swinging quartet with classic Django Reinhardt-style instrumentation (two acoustic guitars, bass, and snare drum played with brushes). The adventurous repertoire consists of Reinhardt compositions, nineteenth and early twentieth century songs from the Great American Songbook, an Austrian folk song, and one Stojka original.

5 out of 5 stars Not Just A Great Gypsy Guitarist..........2007-07-03

Not just a great gypsy guitarist, Harri Stojka is a great guitarist, period, though he's probably best known in Viennese musical circles for his Roma (Gypsy) and Jazz improvisations. I consider myself fortunate to have heard him, percussionist Heimo Wiederhofer, two other Viennese guitarists, and a Roma soprano singer, perform last night at the Austrian Cultural Forum New York, during a reception held in honor of outgoing Austrian Cultural Forum New York director Dr. Christoph Thun-Hohenstein (Fortunately some other fellow New Yorkers will hear just how good a guitarist Stojka is during a gig that he and his band will perform later this week.). During an exciting, memorable set, Stojka and his bandmates played a repertoire encompassing traditional Roma melodies to fiery jazz improvisations performed in the style of Django Reinhardt. Afterwards I had the pleasure of thanking him for his excellent playing, and told him that I hope he'll return once again to the Austrian Cultural Forum New York's fine chamber music auditorium.

4 out of 5 stars A Tribute to Gypsy Guitarist Django Reinhardt.......2006-10-06

Harri Stojka is a gypsy guitarist. Now you probably have to be pretty to date on jazz to even know what that means or indicates OR you can listen to this infectious CD and discover for yourself.

Harri Stojka, born in Vienna as a Roma gypsy, carries on the tradition of the spectacular fingering and improvisations for which Django was internationally known in the 1930s. For the new listener this is music that is reminiscent of Kurt Weill, of strolling players across the continent of Europe and Asia, and of some down home American sounds. Stojka is an incredible technician with faster, cleaner fingers on the struts than most anyone else around. He is accompanied on this selection of thirteen tunes by Heimo Wiederhofer on brush snare, Claudius Jelinek on rhythm guitar and banjo, and Eva Berky on violin. The results are as fresh as anything around the jazz world today. Listening to this recording it is impossible not to yearn to dance! Grady Harp, October 06

5 out of 5 stars Later work by a jazz guitar legend.......2004-11-18

The "gypsy jazz" guitar style pioneered by the much-revered Django Reinhardt underpins many of the best musette recordings. This is some of his later work, made in 1947 and 1953, when Reinhardt was in a state of semi-retirement. He had also become fascinated with bebop, which was the universal jazz form at the time. Paradoxically, his interest in the pyrotechnics of Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker led Reinhardt to play in a style which was less dynamic and more lyrical than his classic work from the '30s, and he became a more subtly expressive player. Like Louis Armstrong in his later years, Reinhardt was undeniably a master musician, playing with a richness and soulful depth that few musicians could hope to match. Sadly, he died of a brain hemmorage not long after the last of these recordings, in 1953. This 2-CD set is pretty swell... definitely worth checking out!

    Album Description

Gypsy Swing is the only jazz style coined outside the USA. It is a synonym for European jazz. Hailing from America's midwestern prairies, Harmonious Wail brings a passion for all things that swing to "Gypsy Swing," their latest release on Naxos World. Blending the instrumental firepower of Gypsy jazz guitar, Jethro Burns-inspired jazz mandolin and sultry jazz vocals that hark back to the time when Swing was King, the band establishes itself here as a thoughtful innovator capable of recreating the potency and vigor of Django Reinhardt's classic sound while carving out a unique niche that appeals to swing fans of all genres.

5 out of 5 stars Django the Great.......2000-06-13

Django Reinhardt was "Europe's first acclaimed jazz musician" (Down Beat Magazine) and an amazing story in and of himself. If you've never heard this man's frenetic and masterful playing before, this CD would be a good place to start. Django Reinhardt's music is a completely original melding of the Gypsy music of his youth and the early American Jazz of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Joe Venuti and guitarist Eddie Lang. Keep in mind while you're listening that this man only had the full use of two fingers on his left (the chording) hand. An unappreciated master of the guitar, Reinhardt's playing is showcased to good effect on this album. A worthy purchase.

Keep Cool - Guitar solos 1950-53, is very much a sister record to FiveFour's recent great artistry of Django Reinhardt - FiveFour 7, in that it concentrates on historic recordings made in the last years of this great guitarists life. These recordings simply underline the fact that Django was the greatest guitarist who ever lived and as record collector said when reviewing great artistry will be of interest to anyone remotely interested in the guitar.

It is strangely reminiscent of Frank Zappa's celebrated and just as jazzy "Mother of Invention." If this CD doesn't set your toe to tapping and a smile on your face, you should probably get medication.--Cheryl Scott, Folk and Acousic Music Exchange
