This five-CD box set soundtrack to filmmaker Ken Burns's 10-part, 19-hour documentary Jazz spans nearly a century of jazz styles, from the martial rhythms of James Reese Europe to the soul-jazz of Grover Washington Jr. It includes time-tested classics like Benny Goodman's 1938 classic, "Sing, Sing, Sing"; John Coltrane's chanting 1965 immortal track, "A Love Supreme"; Billie Holiday's blue-ember ballad, "God Bless the Child"; and Ella Fitzgerald peeling off "A-Tisket A-Tasket." Bebop is represented by Charlie Parker's orchestral bop version of "Just Friends"; Thelonious Monk's nocturnal calling card, "'Round Midnight"; and Dizzy Gillespie's "Salt Peanuts" and "Groovin' High."
The jazz-instrumentalist-as-singer comes to life on Coleman Hawkins's "Body and Soul" and Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers' "Doodlin'." Clifford Brown and Max Roach's "I Get a Kick out of You" epitomizes the hard-bop era, while Miles Davis's "So What" stands as the modal masterpiece. The cool school is in session with Chet Baker and Gerry Mulligan dishing out "Walkin' Shoes," and the Modern Jazz Quartet's soulful elegy "Django" straddles all the above musical orbits. As for Django Reinhardt, he's featured on "Shine" with the justly famed Le Quartet du Hot Club de France.
Louis Armstrong's "West End Blues" and "Potato Head Blues" and Duke Ellington's rousing rendition of Billy Strayhorn's anthem, "Take the A Train," and his moody "Solitude" show why they are the Olympian masters of this art form--and the most frequently featured artists in the series. Although Ken Burns tries bringing the music up-to-date with Wynton Marsalis, Cassandra Wilson, and two jazz-hip-hop-influenced tracks--Herbie Hancock's robotic "Rockit" and the French-language "Un Aige en Danger" by MC Solaar and bass legend Ron Carter--there are significant holes here. After Cecil Taylor and Ornette Coleman, the avant-garde period from the late 1960s to the 1980s is lacking. And aside from the bossa nova hit "Desafinado," Latin jazz is also missing. It's a tough task summarizing jazz in five CDs, and Burns has given us a vibrant and vivid multicolored aural portrait of the music. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Great Intro to Jazz.......2007-03-23
For those just getting into Jazz or just need a refresher course this is a great CD. I brought it for my husband who is a big Jazz fan and he just loves it and gets alot of use out of them.
Ken Burn's Jazz CD.......2007-01-14
A great cd with many remastered original recordings of jazz greats. Each cd features a different jazz era, so one can select a jazz genre to suit one's mood.
A must have.........2007-01-05
..for any jazz fan or music history buff. LOADS of content, hours and hours of great music.
Good starter set for jazz beginners.......2006-02-22
This is a beautifully packaged 5 disc set highlighting some of the greatest jazz artists of all time. If you buy this set and are really excited about the sound and the masterful artists presented then, I highly recommend collecting the 22 discs of individual artists by Burns which showcase the popular and influential music of those artists. Having all of the Ken Burns Jazz editions is of course just a start but a good start into the world of jazz it will be.
good as a starting point as any.......2005-10-10
If you obtained this set, miles davis' kind of blue, and "the verve story 1944-1994" you have the makings of a good starting point of a jazz collection.

Amazon.com essential recording
Band leader and lounge kingpin Louis Prima will be best be known for the classic, "Just a Gigolo," immortalized by David Lee Roth for a whole new generation of swingers. But Prima's output went much further: in his day he recorded for Capitol, acted in a movie or two, even owned a golf course. Prima's genius is infectious: lounge, swing, and Dixieland all fuse together into medleys that are fun, dance-worthy, and upbeat. Prima's duets with Keely Smith are the obvious highlights here: "That Ol' Black Magic," "Hey Boy! Hey Girl!," and "I've Got You Under My Skin" are essential Prima tracks. Sure, the cheese factor occasionally runs high, but it is a fun trip. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
Good Prima.......2007-07-04
This is a good collection of the best hits of the unique Louis Prima with his very special Italian-jazzy style.
The joy of life!.......2007-05-31
This disk rocks, and is packed with great, upbeat music. It brims with humor and spirit. Even though it runs for well over an hour, I feel let down when it's over.
Unlike many of the people who have posted here before me, I have no particular interest in the swing revival, and I did not come across Louis Prima via Brian Setzer. Brian Setzer is, however, as good a link to Louis Prima as any. Prima was a mysterious figure who played heavily in the otherwise fictional 50's period Italian food film "Big Night" (1996). Intrigued, I bought this disk after seeing "Big Night" in the theatre.
The song "Beep Beep" is dated and corny, but it differs from the rest of the disk only in its space-age subject matter and "otherworldly" slide-guitar sound effects. It was topical during the late-50's space race. Everything else holds up perfectly well over 40-plus years.
Prima's band is tight, yet spontaneous and not sterile. He has a great onstage comic rapport with cohort Sam Butera, and also with his then-wife and straight-woman Keely Smith.
An example from "Embraceable You" --
Keely (singing): "Why don't you come and get your baby-do..."
Louis (aside to the audience): "Call from 'The Point'."
This disk is a must for any non-classical music lover with a pulse. This is in my top 5 CD's, out of perhaps 400 I own, and is certainly a "desert island disk." Deservedly, almost everyone on this page has given it 5 stars. It doesn't get any better than this, kids. (Adapted from my review of 10/27/1999.)
How could you not?.......2007-05-28
This is classic and cool. Reminds me of the jungle book! Highly recommended
Prima's Primo.......2007-03-10
A Baby Boomer like myself might have first thought that Louis Prima was too square. But I thought I would try his music and I liked it! I was aware of his catalog by current artists who had covered him (Van Morrison, Brian Setzer). I found the songs to be an entertaining,"retro" experience. I enjoyed the different vocal styles with Prima's Louie Armstrong-type voice and Keely Smith's crystal clear vocalizing. I loved the sophisticated, syncopated big band instrumental sound. And at a bargain price. I definitely recommend it!
Louis at his best.......2007-02-21
Amazing CD- excellent arrangements performed by a master musician and showman- his songs still work today - most recently in a GAP TV commercial.
Especially like Just a Gigolo and That Old Black Magic which are classics.

The back of this two-CD set may say "File under Lounge," but frankly, lounging will be the very last thing on your mind once you put Louis and Keely on. It's simply impossible to stand still while the duo, backed by Sam Butera and the Witnesses, gets going. When Keely sings "Hey boy, I can really cook," there's a tiny chance she's talking about something that takes place in the kitchen, but the galloping bass line behind her says that she really belongs to the dance floor. Whoo-hee! Cole Porter's "Just One of Those Things" is taken at a frenetic pace--do these people ever pause to breathe? The bulk of this collection was recorded between 1957 and 1962, and it makes for an explosive document of a now-gone era when men in sharp suits hung out at the Copa, babes with pointy rocket-launcher breasts at their arms. The sheer effortlessness of it all is still supremely exciting. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
fun swing.......2005-02-12
i just started to appreciate louis prima's band-this remastered double cd offers an excellent listening experience.
Jump, Jive, An' Wail!.......2004-06-17
Songs from Louis Prima and Keely Smith with Sam Butera and the Witnesses. Songs are great. Compilation includes songs from "The Wildest", "The Call of the Wildest" and "The Wildest Show at Tahoe".
Fast, funny, and worth every penny!.......2002-09-09
I was skeptical about buying a compilation CD set for fear it wouldn't be good... but I was wrong! I can't get enough of these CD's. I do Swing dance and Lindy Hop, and I think some of the tempos to these songs are a bit fast for dancing, but excellent for listening to when you just want to be in a good mood! Keely has a great voice, and Louis is just plane hysterical :D
A trip to the Moon on nuclear wings!.......2001-12-08
What a blast!
This was my first introduction to Mr. Prima & Co. What a swingin' treat!
You can tell from each and every cut on this twin CD set that these guys were having fun. Many of the songs have little ad-libs between Louis, Keely Smith, Sam Butera, and the other band members. Louis jumps in between solos to throw out comments, he'll scat, even proto-rap, and is having such a good time he'll try to keep from laughing while he and Sam duel with brass. Only true professional musicians can get away with that sort of thing and make it sound good. Louis & Co. are top-notch pros.
Keely solos on a few cuts to round things out, and basically, you get the feeling of what it must have been like to be kickin' it in Vegas back in the swank era while taking in Louis Prima's act. Maybe tomorrow night, you'll catch Dino at the Sands, and take in Torme on Tuesday. Or, maybe you'll just keep coming back here to see Louis, Keely, Sam, and the Witnesses again and again.
Many of the songs are just plain fun ("Robin Hood/Oh Babe", "Banana Split For My Baby", "Felicia No Capicia", "Greenback Dollar Bill", "There'll Be No Next Time"), and even the old standards take on a wink and a smile when Louis gets ahold of them ("The Music Goes 'Round And Around", "That Old Black Magic", "Just One of Those Things", "Embraceable You")!
Get yourself a martini, sit back and relax, and get ready to be swung back to swanksville. This set is one swingin' good time, whether you're six or sixty!
Fun with the swing masters.......2000-11-09
Louis Prima and Keely Smith with Sam Butera and the Witnesses constitute probably the single greatest influence on today's swing scene. I am not exaggerating. And this double-CD is a great place to start: Over two hours of remastered music, a great production design (neo-retro), and long liner notes. My only problem with the presentation is that the individual musician credits are left out. A must for all swing dancers and jazz musicians! ///// KOBY.

Atlantic Records has ridden musical trends since the late '40s; these seven CDs chronicle the first 28 years of the label's work in black pop, during which artists such as Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, and Otis Redding oversaw the creation and flowering of soul music. Also included are classic tracks by the Drifters, Wilson Pickett, Ruth Brown, the Coasters, Sam & Dave, and many others who walk through the dreams of R&B and rock & roll fans. --Rickey Wright

Lost Opportunity.......2007-03-24
The problem with this collection is not the music selected - a look at the tracks will show that. However, the sound quality is abysmal. I owned many of these songs as 45s and the music would often jump right out of the speakers. This collection sounds dull and lifeless. Atlantic used the master tapes made for the vinyl version released in the 80s, with all the limiting and compression needed to squeeze the music onto an LP intact. The rhythmic, driving quality of the bass is bled away along with the highs. A complete disappointment. Demand a refund.
Damaged Goods.......2007-03-15
Disappointed to find that a selection like this is sent in a damaged state with scratches and scuffs to the CD box when the outer cardboard box is in excellent condition.
essential.......2007-03-10
any serious music fan should have this. a shocking amount of great, great stuff.
The real R&B sound !.......2007-02-02
Very good CD's set. Buy a part of the R&B of the 20th century with these discs and get back in these fines years! I can listen to very famous tracks, and many more I have discovered with a lot of pleasure. This set is boxed like a LP set. It failed by contening only 8 dics ;-)

The Putumayo label is known for its easily recognizable packaging and accessible collections of music from around the world. Here the label takes a broad survey of one of the most storied music towns in the world. Household names like Louis Prima, Louis Armstrong and Dr. John do their version of some Crescent City classics. Local favorites like trumpeter Kermit Ruffins, Preservation Hall Jazz Band and singer Topsy Chapman offer up traditional flavor as well. Music fans knowledgeable about the local scene will likely be happy about the inclusion of the swingin' December-May collaboration between trumpeters Doc Cheatham (who was 91 when he recorded "I Gotta Right To Sing The Blues") and Nicholas Payton (who has 23). Highlighting a vibrant diversity of old and new talent, this album is a musical and cultural tour of a town filled with French Creole culture, a Spanish tinge and some good old American jazz and blues. --Tad Hendrickson

Great sampler of N.O. music.......2007-01-12
Purchased my first copy when at the Audubon Zoo in N.O. and love the variety of music styles and musicians. Have since gotten additional CDs of works by individual musicians featured on this CD. This particular purchase (2nd copy) was to give to my brother for Christmas.
Memories of the Big Easy.......2006-05-05
This is another CD I found at my friend Regina's shop, Art and Soul. It is a collection of New Orleans style music featuring Louis Prima with "Basin Street Blues" and Louis Armstrong with
"Tin Roof Blues," and a number of other artists for a total of 11 cuts (Dr. John also performs an arrangement of Basin Street Blues). It gives you the spirit of the Big Easy. The CD starts with Kermit Ruffins' "Drop me off in New Orleans" (playing time 4:28) and ends with Gregg Stafford & Dr. Michael White in a combination, "Bye & Bye/Saints" (playing time 8:02) -the latter being the traditional end of a New Orleans style performance (it was played at the end of a friend's funeral service).
There is a small booklet inside the PC case giving informatin on the various artists (in English, Spanish, and French). As a bonus, it includes a recipe for Seafood Gumbo.
Overall it is an excellent music collection. A sticker on the outer wrapper indicated that Futumayo is giving their proceeds from the CD to New Orleans Relief.
My main objections are that the CD case does not snap closed tight, and the CD takes over your PC if you play it on a PC Media Player (also, for some reason, the sound quality was not good when I tried playing it on my PC). It played well on the CD player in my car, and on a separate CD player at my house.
Enjoyed the variety of artists.......2006-03-17
Great music... I have listened to a vast amount of New Orlean's numbers and find this music very entertaining.
A great introductory album!.......2005-12-17
If you're not familiar with New Orleans music, this is a great place to start. It's an authentic collection of the type of music that the city is genuinely home to (accurately, no zydeco or cajun tracks are included here, as those are imports from Southwest Louisiana) and it's a nicely rounded collection, at that.
The music of New Orleans is only one of about a million things that make the city so special, and this is a great place to get started. If you're already a die-hard New Orleans music fan, you'll probably find that you have most of these tracks in your collection anyway, but for the beginner, this collection is perfect.
Poignant and marvelous music.......2005-09-09
I've always loved the music that flourishes in New Orleans, and this CD contains examples of some of the best music the Crescent City has always offered to the world, from such legends as Armstrong and Prima, and from wonderful current artists like Kermit Ruffins. The music may seem poignant now in the face of Hurricane Katrina, but it also contains a defiant merriness that leaves no doubt that New Orleans will recover and rise again from this disaster. Best of all, producer Putumayo has stated that all sales of this album will go to relief efforts in New Orleans -- as good a reason to own and revel in this CD as any!

Louis Prima and wife Keely Smith released several collaborations, but this 1960 import reissue showcases one of their very best. Recorded for Dot Records in 1960, Louis & Keely features the duo performing swinging romantic tunes such as "Night and Day," "I'm Confessin' (That I Love You)," and "And the Angels Sing." Smith's vocal talents are at their peak (she overpowers Prima on several numbers), and the band is in top form. Prima was a master at transforming tried-and-true vocal standards into powerful jazzy numbers; this disc is no exception. The album closer "Bei Mir Bist Du Schon" is one of the pair's finest moments. Though the remastering isn't the greatest, these tunes sound far from dated. One of Prima's best. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
Louis and Keely's togetherness--as they trumpet their love from the rooftops !!!.......2007-04-09
Louis Prima and Keely Smith were a seemingly odd couple act who worked astonishingly well together on the Vegas strip and in other venues as well. This CD gives us the reasons why. Their voices are strong, vibrant and full of positive energy; and they can harmonize so well it stuns me.
The CD opens with "Night And Day;" the musical arrangement makes good use of the percussion and horns; the arrangement also plays with the tempo somewhat to give this a sprightly flavor. Louis Prima and Keely Smith's voices project warmth and passion on this number. The horns and percussion work well again for the arrangement of "All I Do Is Dream Of You;" Louis and Keely use their personal chemistry as lovers in real life to give this duet extra punch and depth, too.
Other great numbers on this CD include "Make Love To Me" which reminds me of that American 1920s beat; "I Don't Know Why" with Louis and Keely harmonizing to perfection and "Tea For Two." "Tea For Two" gets the regal treatment as Keely recites a special, rarely heard opening verse to this classic ballad. Louis and Keely then sing "Tea For Two" flawlessly. Great!
Other numbers offer jazzy arrangements and renditions to infuse them with new life as Louis and Keely successfully put their own stamp on them. "And The Angels Sing" has a somewhat early 1960s Latin flavor to it with its arrangement; and the male backup chorus enhances the beauty of this number. Louis and Keely sing strong for "And The Angels Sing." "Cheek To Cheek" and "Bei Mir Bist Du Schön" also sport jazzy renditions full of energy and pep that showcase the beauty of each number.
The liner notes include a brief essay about Louis Prima and Keely Smith by Don Bailer; and the art work is good, too.
I highly recommend this for fans of Louis Prima and Keely Smith. Fans of classic pop vocals will be very pleased with this CD for years to come.
For Appreciating Prima's More Subtle Styling Skills.......2004-03-04
Louis Prima's signature mood was "zany." He could take the spark that exists in any song and turn it into a crazy fireworks show. Look at any old video of his live performances and you'll truly understand Prima's genius for creating nearly out-of-control musical wackiness. Especially with Keely Smith playing the "straight man" to Prima's kinetic on-stage persona, it's obvious why everyone who saw his shows were amazed.
Yet, many of Prima's albums rely too much on madcap novelty songs, slapstick lyrics, and genre-bending interpretations. On so many albums, Prima does (amazingly) manage to get away with singing songs like "Yes We Have No Bananas," "Banana Split for My Baby," and "Beep! Beep!". But without the benefit of the visual cues that Prima brought to his live shows, I think this kind of music gets old quickly, even in the hands of a master.
"Louis and Keely" is an exception. For this collection of songs, Louis Prima and Keely Smith spend most of their time interpreting more classic jazz standards. Yes, they inject a lot of humor into their performances, but it is generally much more subtle than usual. And their interpretations are inventive and fresh, but not usually at the expense of losing the original song's essence. I think this is why another reviewer calls this a somewhat "staid" album - a comment I completely agree with, but particularly in relation to Prima's other stuff.
I'm not sure whether a listener will appreciate the lyrical and musical humor on this album without a previous appreciation of Prima's more zany material. However, this is the only collection of Prima songs I return to again and again.
Delightful, slightly weird, but a little staid.......2002-07-06
Louis and Keely were one of the hottest acts in show business during the 1950s and very early '60s, and this is one of their last (and best) collaborations together. As usual, Prima's weird energy and hot jazz inflections spice up the gorgeous but otherwise slightly bland singing of Smith. I especially love the double-time riffs, Prima's rhythmic energy and the use of "Things Ain't What they Used to Be" as a riff in "Make Love to Me" and "I Don't Know Why" (and, in the latter song, a strange sort of New Orleans-styled Italianish pig latin), but I would have enjoyed him playing trumpet obbligato on more than just two tunes, and I miss the hot, mad tenor sax of Sam Butera so evident on the Capitol recordings. Still, for what it is this is a delightful album, and I guarantee that at least half of the tracks will remain in your memory a long time after this disc has finished.
Classic Louis Prima/Keely Smith revisited. TERRIFIC!.......2000-09-25
Many of their greatest recordings in the style that is purely Louis Prima and Keely. Until I listened to this CD I haven't had the opportunity to hear any of their unique presentations in quite some time. I had a grin on my face the entire time. Most enjoyable music and a very good quality CD. Highly recommended.
An excellent CD of popular standards..........2000-05-27
A classic Dot LP, reissued on a Jasmine CD. Louis & Keely zooma zooma through 12 timeless stanards, her sultry voice and his Louis Armstrong like voice make for great contrast, the album swings and should be of interest to jazz collectors as well as casual lounge music lovers.

Customer Reviews:
Very good swing collection.......2006-04-01
While there was a renaissance of interest in swing in the 1990s, and while much of this was among a relatively younger --late 20s, 30s, 40s-- audience, swing CDs are increasingly out of print.
Decca and Brunswick recorded many important swing artists in the 1930s and 1940s, the period of focus in this collection.
We are fortunate that GRP has assembled a wide variety of performers on this collection. You have hot swing performers; and you also have more laid back performers such as Glen Gray's Casa Loma Orchestra.
The music on this collection swings! --Even the Glen Miller track is up-beat.
Some reviews in the discographical literature kvetch about the quality of anthologies. They always expect something more: more concentration on the major figures, more obscure tunes instead of hits. This collection definitely meets the bill; but the complainers might be disappointed that few artists are represented more than once. Count Basie is a worthy exception of course. If you liked what you heard in Ken Burns' "Jazz" series, you should get this collection. Given the shrinking amount of swing that is available these days, I would even recommend that "serious" collectors also get this one. Many of the artists here are unavailable in their own recordings.
Nearly all of the tracks are arranged in chronological order. In addition, there is a booklet of commentary that is so long, it hardly fits in the case.
My one disappointment was that there are no tracks with vocalists. For great swing with vocalists I would recommend that you pursue the Columbia (SONY) "His Great Vocalists" collections for Ellington, Basie or Goodman.
Decent Collection.......2005-02-19
It's not quite what I'd call an Anthology, but it's certainly a good collection. Each track is an excellent song and most of the major artists are represented. Not every track is danceable, for you swing dancers out there, but there's plenty of danceable numbers, including a couple you can practice your Bal-Swing to. Enjoyable collection.
A Memorable Collection, But Not Really For the Casual Fan.......2004-06-28
Strictly speaking, "swing" designates a style of performance in which the emphasis falls on the offbeat. Even so the term "big band swing" is a flexible one, and if your ideas about it center on the style of The Glenn Miller Orchestra you will likely be disappointed with this double disk collection, which ranges in tone from the strict tempos of the Deco era to the bop-inflected sounds popular in post-World War II America.
In the big band era, most popular ballrooms and dance clubs had a "house orchestra," and each strove to create a specific style that would set them apart in the highly competitive world of big band music--and overall this collection does a superior job of capturing both the broad differences and subtle nuances that made each band distinctly different from the rest, as well as giving the listener an overview of the form as it changed over time. Consequently, the selections here are not often the most popular, but rather most indicative.
The emphasis here is really more upon lesser known bands and then-popular but now forgotten releases, including such one-hit wonders as Casa Loma Orchestra, a house band that reached a brief popularity with the "Casa Loma Stomp." Even so, there are famous names aplenty, such as Duke Ellington, The Dorsey Brothers, Count Basie, Chick Webb, Louis Armstrong, Woody Herman, Bennie Goodman, Artie Shaw--and yes, even the inescapable and to my mind slightly overrated Glenn Miller, to name but the most obvious.
Hardcore fans are likely to regret the absence of certain artists and certain tunes--my own complaint is that Cab Calloway is absent from the collection, and it is unfortunate that Artie Shaw is represented by "The Continental" instead of "Begin the Beguine." It is also true that the sound quality, particularly re recordings from the early 1930s, is sometimes problematic; this, however, is inevitable, for early recording techniques were a far cry from current standards. Even so, you'd have to go some to find a collection that so effectively captures the wide array of styles seen in big band music over the course of 25 years of popularity.

Swing, swing, swing.......2003-12-13
This is a nice anthologie which is not typical for it features lsser known bands and lesser known songs. It has Don Redman's classic Chant Of The Weed, a RARE Spud Murphey & His Orchestra track! This cd is pure swing at it's best. My wife & I are swing dancers and there is palnty here for lindy hopping, shag, balboa, and jitterbug. Fun msuic for dancing or listening. A great place to start and the 1st disc gives you a nice sampling of where swings roots come from...
Well, almost all of us agree.......2002-11-07
This is a glorious collection. The cover art is indeed repugnant. And some of the recordings are a little hissy. But the performers sound pretty mean to me.
A good anthology covers the big numbers (though maybe not the biggest) and also uncovers mistakenly overlooked items. This does a good job on that, for the relative novice. And it also moderates between up-tempo and more relaxed performances, so it's not just constant swing. Another tip o' the hat--well-chosen selections. I had never heard of Lucky Millinder when I bought this, nor The Mills Blue Rhythm Band, nor the Casa Loma Orchestra. Those cuts alone made it worth the price--this stuff swings! And I found some new bands to investigate as well....never enough CDs on the shelf!
I found this collection almost perfect. How can anyone say Saratoga Drag doesn't swing....my shoulders gyrate and hips swivel. And I'm an old, non-dancing, rhythm-free guy. Thanks Decca!

Sugar Blues By Clyde McCoy.......2007-05-30
I had been trying to get this album for quite some time and the wait was worth it.The album is more than I had antisipated as each and every number
was great. The muted trumpet of Clyde McCoy is absolutely the best I have ever heard, and I was amaized at the sound quality for something done in 1951.To anyone who enjoys jazz and particularly trumpet, I highly recomend
this product.
Sugar Blues - I really loved this song when I was eight........2006-08-17
I played our 78 of Sugar Blues over and over as a kid - until we finally broke it . Recently saw a commercial on TV featuring the song and it brought back memories of how enjoyable this music was. This is a great compilation of those memorable songs.

Listen and dream.......2006-11-10
An excellent album. The best of Mercer performed by the best musicians and singers. The instrumental album is magnific, with names like Charlie Parker, Gerry Mulligan, Quincy Jones, Oscar Peterson, Stan Getz performing songs that sensibilize our reflections. An invitation for a dream.
If you have the music, he has the words .......2006-06-06
Among Johnny Mercer's greatest songs are: "P.S. I Love You" (1934, Gordon Jenkins), "Goody Goody" (1936, Matt Melneck), "I'm An Old Cowhand" (1936, words and music), "Bob White (Whatcha Gonna Swing Tonight?)" (1937, Bernie Hanighen), "Too Marvelous For Words" (1937, Richard Whiting), "Jeepers Creepers" (1938, Harry Warren), "Hooray For Hollywood" (1938, Richard Whiting), "Day In--Day Out" (1939, Rube Bloom), "I Thought About You" (1939, Jimmy Van Heusen), "Fools Rush In" (1940, Rube Bloom), "Blues In The Night" (1941, Harold Arlen), "Skylark" (1941, Hoagy Carmichael), "I Remember You" (1942, Victor Schertzinger), "I'm Old Fashioned" (1942, Jerome Kern), "That Old Black Magic"(1942, Harold Arlen), "Hit The Road To Dreamland" (1942, Harold Arlen), "My Shining Hour" (1943, Harold Arlen), "One For My Baby" (1943, Harold Arlen), "Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate The Positive" (1944, Harold Arlen), "Let's Take The Long Way Home"(1944, Harold Arlen), "G.I. Jive" (1944, words and music), "Laura" (1945, David Raskin), "Out Of This World" (1945, Harold Arlen), "Early Autumn" (1949, Woody Herman and Ralph Burns), "Autumn Leaves" (1950, English version of a French song, music by Joseph Kozma), "Here's To My Lady" (1951, Rube Bloom), "Something's Gotta Give" (1955, words and music), "Satin Doll" (1958, Duke Ellington), "Charade" (1963, Henry Mancini), "Summer Wind" (1965, Henry Mayer), and "How Do You Say Aug Wiedersehn?" (1967, Tony Scibetta).
This collection does not include them all but contains enough to show why he is considered one of the greatest lyricists popular American song ever produced.
One oddity with Mercer is that many of his greatest hits came from melodies, music which had been pre- produced and which he was asked to write the words for. So for instance the beautiful haunting 'Autumn Leaves' was given lyrics after it had come to America from France.
Mercer is also the only lyric writer to have been honored by an 'Ella Fitzergald Songbook' collection.
