Amazon.com essential recording

The two No. 1 hits from this 1972 album perfectly illustrate the contrasting sides of Wonder's complex personality. "Superstition" is a strong rocker, a paranoid bit of wah-wah guitar funk that's as persistent as the best punk music; the opening track, "You Are the Sunshine of My Life," is a pure love song that would sound corny coming from any other voice. A hint of bitterness, perhaps owing to Wonder's then-dissolving marriage, gives Talking Book its edge. But overall it's obsessed with love, and while "Sunshine" is still one of the singer/keyboardist's most beloved songs, the closing "I Believe (When I Fall in Love It Will Be Forever)" is much deeper and more rewarding. --Steve Knopper

5 out of 5 stars Stevie Wonder's Greatest Album........2007-04-18

Stevie Wonder released many classic albums in the 1970's including "Innervisions", "Fulfilingness First Finale" and the epic "Songs In the Key Of Life". However, in this reviewers opinion, his late 1972 classic "Talking Book" is still Stevie's best overall album.
Like "Music Of My Mind" before it, "Talking Book" finds Stevie Wonder in complete control by writing, producing and performing most of the music himself. His natural songwriting talents combined with the latest technology and his unmistakable vocals make for what is undoubtedly a timeless classic.
Many of the tracks on "Talking Book" have become standards since their initial release including the wonderful "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life", "Tuesday Heartbreak", "Blame It On The Sun", "You've Got It Bad Girl" and the driving funk of "Superstition". Elsewhere are stellar moments such as the hard rock of the jamming "Maybe Your Baby", the folkish "Big Brother", the beautifully orchestrated piano ballad "You and I" and the dynamic spiritual closer "I Believe".
Indeed, all 10 tracks that make up "Talking Book" are some of the best music Stevie Wonder has ever made. This isn't just an album to be listened to in sections, it needs to be played from beginning to end. As mentioned above, Stevie has made albums that have equalled "Talking Book", however this album has an extra little added kick that brings it above the others.
Although I've been familiar with the "Talking Book" album since I was born, I'm very happy to say that I finally own this album all these years later.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic - For Anyone's "Greatest of All Time" Collection.......2007-02-19

This album should be in any serious collection of 20th Century music. One of the best of its genre. Just as fun to listen to now as when it came out decades ago.

5 out of 5 stars A Simply Marvelous Recording.......2006-12-14

In one of the greatest albums recorded, Stevie Wonder writes timeless music with a classic blend of r&b, blues, gospel and jazz.

Though the lyrics may be biting at times, You Are The Sunshine Of My Life is a pop classic. And the grappling with the beauty and desperation of love culminates with the last song, I Believe, that evolves from a wonderful gospel rendition into cutting blues.

Superstition is one bad piece of music and the political awareness in Big Brother is unfortunately timeless, especially for urban residents. Blame It On The Sun has Wonder fully utilizing soft textures on the synthesizer, ultimately showing how technology can work with - and not dominate - other instruments.

Released in November 1972 - the outstanding Music of My Mind was released earlier in the year - Talking Book proved without a doubt that Wonder's ability as a composer/producer/musician had reached iconic status at the age of 22.

5 out of 5 stars Proves my point............2006-12-14

This album solidifies why I honestly think Stevie Wonder is the greatest solo recording artist in history. There is not a single bad song on here and is thus far my favorite Stevie Wonder album. Slow ballads like "You & I" and "I Believe". The funk classic "Superstition" AM Gold classic "You are the Sunshine of My Life", and some more that are really great songs are all on here. BUY THIS ALBUM. This is up there w/ "Dark Side of the Moon", "Thriller", "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", or Stevie's very on "Innervisions"

5 out of 5 stars Stevie is amazing........2006-11-29

Prior to purchasing this CD, I was only familiar with some of Stevie's hits, which I heard on the radio, and "the definitive collection" cd which I purchased before seeing him in concert. That being said, I loved everything I had heard of his thus far.

Let me tell you, now this CD just stands out as one of the greatest all times for me. Besides the classics "You Are The Sunshine of My Life" and "Superstition," every song on this CD is great, although I am personally less fond of "Looking for Another Pure Love." "You and I" is another great Stevie Wonder ballad, and he shows off his amazing vocal technique yet again with the final chorus. My favorite song on this CD though is probably "I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever)." I actually read the lyrics to this track before I had heard it, and the optimism that the song expresses about new love mixed with it's dark melody really touched me.

I highly recommend this CD to anyone and everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Fly Like an Eagle Part 2 and Steve's best .......2007-02-01

The better 12 of the 24 songs Steve recorded for Fly Like an Eagle and Book of Dreams are here. Highly recommended and this may be his best.

5 out of 5 stars The Eagle Returns to Dream.......2006-11-16

Back in 1976, Steve Miller recorded a batch of songs that were enough to fill two complete albums or make one double length album. He chose to divide the songs into two separate albums that were released in consecutive years: "Fly Like an Eagle" in 1976 and "Book of Dreams" in 1977. Both volumes showcase his versatility and talent for producing a variety of styles, including his own twist of originality in many of the songs. Seven of the tracks on "Book of Dreams" are found on his Greatest Hits album, which was released the following year.

Like it's predecesor, this album begins with an instrumental. "Threshold" features an organ and synthesizer that rises and falls in pitch smoothly, sort of like the sound of an airplane taking off, landing, or flying overhead. This track leads directly into "Jet Airliner", one of the popular chart hits found here. A long guitar introduction bursts into the strumming with the folk and southern rock style reminiscent of Creedence Clearwater Revival. In this song, the guy is going on a trip that takes him away from family and friends, but he doubts his feelings about leaving them and asks the plane not to carry him too far away or for too long. Together, these first two tracks serve as an introduction to the album.

Other popular tracks represent a variety of styles here for this artist. Another southern rock song with a hint of the CCR style is "True Fine Love", in which a young man has decided it's time to settle down with a girl he truely loves, and raise a family with her. Another southern rock track is the love song "The Stake", with guitar work similar to The Eagles or Joe Walsh. There are a couple of great instrumental sections in the middle and at the end part. Both of these songs were included on the Greatest Hits album. "Winter Time" is a folk/soft rock hit that features a folk guitar and harmonica, as an accompaniment to the vocals and in the instrumental section. This gentle song dwells on the features of winter: brown leaves, winds, birds flying away for the summer. It begins and ends with the sound of the wind. Steve does a very creative production with "Swingtown", in which he plays with the instruments. This party song has an intro that starts with drums, which are soon joined by a bass guitar, then an organ comes in next, and then an acoustic piano, and finally a strumming guitar. The folk style vocals are accompanied by the various instruments, in a song that deals with wanting to have fun after a hard day's work. An instrumental that begins in the middle and continues to the end include a variety of organ reed "voices" that take turns, and finally the wind marks the end as other instruments fade. The other track with Steve's unique style is "Jungle Love", a rock n' roll number that begins and ends with whistles and squeaks that probably mimic birds and monkeys and other creatures found in the jungle. This whimsical love song about being in love with a girl out in the jungle features great instrumental sections with the electric guitar. This was also one of his popular hits on the radio and also on his Greatest Hits album.

The remaining five tracks may not have been seen as being among his super hits, but they still have the trademark of Steve Miller in their sound. As might be expected from its title, "Wish Upon a Star" is a gentle lullaby with a folk and soft rock style, featuring an accompaniment of organ synthesizer and bass. The theme is "It doesn't matter where or who you are when you wish upon a star. Let your dreams into your heart." A second instrumental "Electro Lux Imbroglio" showcases an organ with fancy space sounds, high flute, electronic tinkle, and church organ. This track leads into "Sacrifice", a mellow composition and the longest piece on this album. This song about a girl who did not appreciate the man she once was with, and therefore sacrificed the relationship, is marked by fancy organ accompaniment with tinkling and trills, as well as bass and drums in the instrumental section. "My Own Space", the last vocal on this album, begins with wind sounds, and later includes an instrumental in the middle with fancy organ and guitar techniques. This reflective, folk-like song is about escaping from problems and worries by heading off to a quiet place like a seashore, where clouds pass overhead, and he walks in the sand, picks up seashells, feels the spirit of life, "where I reach my destiny, I feel free, where I can have my own space".

This album ends with the third instrumental, "Babes in the Woods". This is another novelty piece of Miller's, with a variety of musical instruments such as the strumming guitar, drums, tinkling triangle, flute sounds, and bass. It is as if the instruments themselves are the players, since there are no vocals; the flute and guitar seem to be the focal point, while the triangle, bass, and drums are in the background. This mellow performance marks a quiet closing of this album.

Together, this album and the preceding one, would produce nearly enough popular hits to construct a Greatest Hits album, which was released the following year; as well as provide considerable material for other greatest hits releases that came later. Steve seemed to reach the high point of his recording career and popularity in 1976 and 1977, and is remembered by these songs, for the most part. No one else seems able to quite mimic Steve's unique creativity in producing these artistic masterpieces.

5 out of 5 stars Quite possibly Steve Miller's best album!.......2006-08-17

Steve Miller's eleventh album Book of Dreams was released in May of 1977.
The album was recorded at the same time as its predecessor, 1976's 4 million plus selling Fly Like an Eagle(which hit #3 on the Billboard chart).
Most people would have gone the double album route once they recorded 20 plus songs but Steve Miller(who penned most of the tracks except as noted) saved some songs from the Fly Like an Eagle sessions and re-worked them and added some extra things to the songs. Would this album be a classic or be slagged a carbon copy of the predecessor, read ahead and find out(as I did in 1989 when I got the cassette which was missing two tracks and again in 1991 when the full original album was re-issued on cassette and then I eventually acquired the CD).
We begin the album with the excellent Steve Miller and Byron Allred synthesizer intro Threshold which is a fanfare type doodle with long synthesizer chords with sound effects added, unlike Space Intro on Fly Like an Eagle which was an echo-plexed series of notes with wind. We then segue into the album's Top 10 hit Jet Airliner(penned by Paul Pena and Miller although Steve did not take credit for it) which is the full 4 minute version(with obscenity left intact unlike the version from Greatest Hits 1974-78). Next, we slow down with the acoustic ballad Winter Time which is a classic song that begins with wind swirls and features Norton Buffalo on harmonicas and Steve playing sitar guitar and playing a tasty lead guitar solo. Next is a great rocker called Swingtown(penned by Miller and Chris McCarty) which was a Top 20 hit(in its edited form) but its full version was excellent. Another rocker follows with True Fine Love which is a superb song and features Steve's classic multi-tracked three guitar harmony solo in the middle. The song, for some reason, was not on the mid-80s re-issued LP or cassette version but was back on the cassette version as of 1991 and appears on the CD version of the album. We end the first side of Book of Dreams with the lullabye-ish ballad Wish Upon a Star which features excellent synthesizer work from Miller and Allred.
Side two of the album starts with the album's third Top 20 single Jungle Love(a great rocker penned by bass player Lonnie Turner and extra guitarist Greg Douglass) which was famous for its whistle effects courtesy of keyboardist Allred and has some great synth effects and great guitar work. My personal favorite section of the album was next with the instrumental Electro Lux Imbroglio which is a superb synthesizer drenched fanfare which segues into the 5 plus minute Sacrifice penned by Boz Scaggs guitarist Les Dudek and session musician Curley Cooke. Steve only does vocals on here and some extra guitar but a great song and Dudek's solos on this track are superb. Next is another rocker The Stake which was penned by Steve and David Denny and was a great showcase for Miller's superb guitar playing showing us he could play some great solos and is a great shuffle. next is the track My Own Space which was penned by Jason Cooper, B Winkleman and Miller(although he did not take credit). This slow paced song is excellent and has some great guitar work and vocals from Steve and synthesizer work from Allred. The song(like True Fine Love) was not on the mid-80s re-issued LP or cassette version but was back on the cassette version as of 1991 and appears on the CD version of the album. The acoustic guitar and synthesizer instrumental Babes in the Wood ends the album on a relaxing note.
Book of Dreams is a classic album and rightfully sold 3 plus million copies in the US alone and reached #2 on the Billboard chart(it couldn't topple Fleetwood Mac's Rumours from #1). The album still sells today cos of the music contained within and not for the image.
RECOMMENDED!

2 out of 5 stars not to great.......2007-04-04

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

3 out of 5 stars Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

1 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for........2004-07-04

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

1 out of 5 stars Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

5 out of 5 stars "Mr. Super Hip" is makes the whole CD worth it.......2001-02-03

Suffice it to say that this is an excellent tool for beginning improvisers. More experienced players who have a fondness for the seventies rock/Fender Rhodes sound will LOVE Mr. Super Hip. It's just cheesy enough to be cool, and this sus chord thing at the end of the form was so juicy it just about made me bang my head into a wall. Highly recommended for all beginners and anyone like me with an open mind toward the retro thing....

4 out of 5 stars A Good Start.......2000-05-23

This CD provides a good start for people at the beginning of the journey that is jazz. It is a tool that is able to be used at both beginners level with the option of putting more complex scales over the top at a later stage. A very useful teaching aid and good to have a blow over when you find the time. A must get for all jazz teachers.

3 out of 5 stars they put the alkaline in acid-rock.......2005-12-22

While it may be easy to poke fun at the Blues Magoos (the quintessential one-hit-wonders who could double as the Hee-Haw of psychedeia), the band put together, at the very least, one good album side of respectable 1960's rock. The sum of their production was one massive hit, 1967's 'We Ain't Got Nothin' Yet', which checked out at number 72 for the year, and number five at its peak in January. The band hailed from the Bronx in New York, but first gathered a following as residents at the Night Owl Club in Greenwich Village. They started out as The Trenchcoats, evolved into the Bloos Magoos (true to their psychedelic persona, though it's hard to believe any of this music is truly tripped-out), and became the Blues Magoos at the insistence of their manager, though the blues are hardly the band's forte, which appears to be recording garage-rock covers.

Aside from their singular hit, which leads off the first of two studio albums offered on this CD, the Magoos best work consists of cover songs, which fortunately are also the lengthiest tracks. The vocals on track three, the familiar 'Tobacco Road', sound much like the original version by The Nashville Teens, which hit number 14 in 1964. Though also covered by the likes of Eric Burdon, Rare Earth, and Jefferson Airplane, this version by the Magoos more than holds its own, and at four and 1/2 minutes is the second longest number performed. 'Psychedelic Lollipop' also features robust covers of David Blues 'Queen of My Nights', James Brown's 'I'll Go Crazy' (the lead song on Brown's famed 'Live At the Apollo' disc), and a sincere attempt at Maceo Marriweather's 'Worried Life Blues', although the Farfisa organ lines and vocals that don't bleed tend to mock rather than sing the blues. Their only other attempt at the blues, 'Sometimes I Think About', only serves to reveal the irony of the band's namesake. Another song of note on 'Psychedelic Lollipop' is 'One By One', a nice pop tune released as a follow-up single to 'Ain't Got Nothin' Yet', but which never cracked the Top-40 (a cover of Alan Gordon's 'Gotta Get Away', with its great chorus of "Gotta get away, gotta get away, gotta get away... I wanna be free!", probably had a much better shot at success).

Tracks 11-22 on this disc were originally released on vinyl as the band's sophomore effort, 'Electric Comic Book'. It is, in some respects, a novelty album (tracks 15, 'Intermission' and 22, 'That's All Folks' aren't really songs, but bookends intended to give the unrelated compositions a sense of cohesion; and the liner notes are actually a fold-out mini-poster featuring black and white comic book-like panels featuring the band members as characters). Another novelty track appears on the disc, 'Life Is Just a Cher O' Bowlies', which really makes little sense at all. The gradual deterioration of the compositions on 'Elecric Comic Book' reveal the lack of substance the band possessed. Side two of the original vinyl offered tracks which are just a cut above disturbing aural chaos, 'Albert Common Is Dead', and 'Take My Love'. Clearly, something is amiss by the time 'Rush Hour' begins delivering the questionable lyric "take my love and shove it up your heart". While some of the tracks may have represented passable attempts at late-1960's psychedelia ('Summer Is the Man' and the vibrato-lined sounds of 'Baby, I Want You', which are heavy on sunshine, flowers, and love), the cumulative effort here makes one wonder why the band ever got a shot at a third album, which I'm too afraid to hear. The band might have really had something going had they stuck to covers, such as their rich rendition of Van Morrison's 'Gloria' (which the Shadows of Knight took to number ten in 1966), track fourteen on this disc, which at just over six minutes is also the longest number. The song features some bold variatons on the original organ and guitar lines. If the Vanilla Fudge could subsist on cover songs, why not the Blues Magoos? I should have been a manager...

This two-fer 'Blues Magoos' disc is a fun CD to pop into your player for one or two listens, and there are some redeeming tracks, but by-and-large there is way too much filler here to make this a staple of any respectable music collection. It is an interesting artifact, indeed a caricature, of what was considered fashionable in the late-1960's rock scene. This band performed with neon tubes outlining their bell bottoms, and lava lamps decorating the stage. It's op-art, both visual and auditory. If you're a synesthete, you can probably smell and taste psychedelia all over this one, too. If you truly "dig" this, you either took the 1960's way too seriously, or way too superficially. I'm not sure which is the greater error, but a mistake it is.

4 out of 5 stars Blues Magoos-'Psychedelic Lollipop/Electric Comic Book'.......2004-09-13

Another great 2 lp's-on-one CD release brought to us by the Collectables label. Some of you may not remember much about the Blues Magoos. They were a Bronxe five piece that played some decent psychedelic garage rock that released six lp's from 1966-70,with the first three probably being their best work. This 2-on-1 includes two of those three albums.A total of 22 songs, starting off with their only hit,"We Ain't Got Nothin' Yet" along with many of their other decently penned tracks, like "Gotta Get Away","One By One","Pipe Dream",their outstanding six-minute cover of "Gloria"(one of the disc's best tracks) and "Let's Get Together".Aimed at fans and collectors of '60's psych/garage rock. Will appeal to fans of Shadows Of Knight,Strawberry Alarm Clock,The Creation,The Leaves and Count Five.

5 out of 5 stars Psychedelic Pop At Its Best.......2003-12-20

This CD is a must from the psychedelic 60's. No they were not musicians of the caliber of the Yardbirds or Quicksilver, but there are a number of pop tunes on this CD that could have made top 40, given sufficient airplay and promotion, such as Queen Of MY Nights and Love Seems Doomed. These guys were the embodiment of the psychedelic era. Give them credit for cranking out some great psychedelic-garage rock.

5 out of 5 stars Grotesquely underrated.......2003-10-28

While they may not have been as technically proficient or original as bands like Quicksilver Messenger Service or Vanilla Fudge, the Blues Magoos wrote some catchy psychadelic tunes...fully equipped to enhance your journey to the center of the mind (illegal substance-induced or otherwise), or just to sit back and enjoy, maybe whip out a few of those dated dance moves.

Customer Reviews:

William Bolcom is my kind of musician. He writes music that is sometimes adventurous but always based in a recognizable American idiom. And he's a terrific ragtime pianist, the best Joplin player I've heard. With these credentials, of course he's a wonderful Gershwin player. These are the best piano performances of Gershwin I know. After you hear those, Bolcom joins his wife Joan Morris for very flavorful versions of 10 George and Ira Gershwin songs. The whole disc is a delight, and the original analog recordings still sound fine. Highly recommended to all Gershwin lovers. --Leslie Gerber

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Peculiar.......2005-01-26

I can see how someone might enjoy this album. William Bolcom is a top-flight pianist and the idea of playing the tunes as George Gershwin played them at parties is intriguing.

Because my ear is used to it, I guess, I would like to have heard longer performances of fewer songs. Each one sounded to me like a snippet -- over too soon. Because of that, plus the fact that I'm not a fan of Joan Morris' showy voice, I give the album one thumb up.

5 out of 5 stars Gershwin Never Sounded Better!.......2002-06-25

This is a fantastic CD! Back in the 70's, pianist William Bolcom and his singer wife Joan Morris made a delightful series of albums on the Nonesuch label of old songs from the first half of the twentieth century - just glorious voice backed by brilliant piano. As Ira Gershwin might say - who could ask for anything more? The music is not only beautifully performed, you can hear the joy of the performance in every note. And Bolcom and Morris were never better than when doing Gershwin.

A combination of two albums, the first part of this CD is all piano. The Gershwin Songbook consists of brief (some under a minute) versions of some of his more popular songs in the way that Gershwin himself famously played them at parties. They demonstrate that Gershwin was as gifted a pianist as he was a composer. The other instrumental tracks are some of Gershwin's solo piano pieces, including the wonderful Rialto Ripples, a rag written when he was just seventeen. For me, the pinnacle of both Gershwin's and William Bolcom's artistry is reached on the second of the three preludes - a classic study of a bluesy mood.

Just when you think things can't get any better, Joan Morris arrives. She effortlessly sings and swings her way through ten of Gershwin's best songs from the cheeky comedy of By Strauss to the smoky moodiness of Someone To Watch Over Me. Maybe I'm just an incurable old romantic, but the ballads are the best of all.

No Gershwin collection can be complete without this CD. Now if only I could find a copy of that Bolcom/Morris song about Humphrey Bogart...

Veteran vocalist Phil Perry has an amazing range and in the past has used his lowest lows and highest falsettos to jarring effect. My Book of Love shows the same passion but demonstrates admirable restraint as well. "My Book of Love" has a buoyant hip-hop-meets-Latin-rhythms vibe. Other tunes, as with Barry Eastmond on the dreamy "Closer to Heaven," are slick, machine-generated productions that keep the groove under Perry's sweet emotion. Much more artistically impressive--though perhaps not as radio friendly--are the graceful, soaring ballad "To Fall in Love" (featuring all live instrumentation and an eight-piece string section) and the similarly elegant ode to seasonal love "(A Postcard In) Winter." Musically and lyrically, those tunes have what it takes to become standards, and they feature admirably subtle productions by Lee Curreri and Gary Brown, respectively. Curreri also employs the orchestra on an old Bell-Creed classic, "You're as Right as Rain," on which Perry uses his high vocal tone to simulate the old Stylistics sound. Another highlight is the catchy closer "Only Want to Be with You," on which Perry duets with funky, contemporary-jazz pianist Roger Smith. A little more jazzy playing like Smith's could have made this good project even better. --Jonathan Widran

5 out of 5 stars very close to an audiophile cd........2006-01-29

i first heard phil perry on many background vocals, mostly on smooth jazz tracks and the hits he had in the early 80s. i think to turly appreciate his music is the see him in concert, or listen to him on a pair of martin logans with a pair of bryston 4b nrb amps.my book of love wasnt ment for a boombox, the recording on this cd is very rich ,thick and detailed, you can just feel the music and his vocals come alive. closer to heaven is my favorite. why cant all cds have the recording quality or better like this one.

5 out of 5 stars Only the mature can understand it!.......2001-12-16

I have heard all his albums and I have spoken to the man on a number of occaisions. The music on this album as well as his previous are timeless. those who dont like him and compare him to others (the Critics) are pompus insufferable idiots who have nothing more to do with their time or life than to judge others.

Phil sings each song with a spirit of LOVE which transcends all levels of mature adult listening. My thirteen year old daughter is a big fan of his simply because he took time out of his busy schedule to email her one letter to make her day. I am a fan for life and a friend. If you like smooth jazz, and soul and even adult contemporary music buy this close your eyes and listen with your heart. this is an underated artist who is not getting his due.

Phil Perry hit the mark hard with this one! I played this one in my car and found myself repeating tracks for one week straight. This recording is his best work yet and the style of songs fit him like a glove. Anyone who wants to chill and have a relaxing moment need to play this and let it take you to music heaven! From the first track to the last, it can't be beat. Another winner from another of urban music most underrated singers.

5 out of 5 stars Vocal Mastery.......2000-08-01

'My book of love' is a very special album and believe me this is from the heart! (yes indeed).

There are various episodes to share on this, 'Keep me in the dark tonight' is too deep!. 'To fall in love' almost reduced me to tears, 'Your as right as rain' is as mellow as a shower on a hot summer day! (very sublime - trust me on this one). '(A Postcard in) winter' reveals passion like never before, 'Only wanna be with you' has immediacy, urgency (you just name it).

For those who believe in the power and glory of soul music, Phil is a rare gift to us. I still can't get over the passion he renders to 'Born to love you' and 'Tender is the night' (collaboration with David Koz).

In a nutshell, this is probably the most involving album you'll ever hear this year (trust me on this one). Sure will be glad to hear from you Phil and other serious fans.(Adeusim@hotmail.com)

Rich thugs for life is simply the best ATL album , but i admit it's not their easiest album to listen to ;this album is on the next level ,you cant find more modern than this one ; the sound ,the mix , the muscic are very sophiscated ;beats are slow , this is not music for G unit groupies !; i really think this album is the last rap classic ;but if you dont have any above the law 'disc , i suggest you start with 'time will reveal' 'black mafia life' or 'uncle sam curse'

3 out of 5 stars 6th group album is ok.......2005-10-13

10 years in the game and 20 months after their last album they're back. I've been an ATL fan since 91 and I have 4 of their albums and one Big Hutch solo (not "Livin Like Hustlers" and "Uncle Sams Curse" -- since I can't find em at a reasonable price) but this is their worst album to date by far. Leaving 2 bigger labels - Ruthelss and Tommy Boy and going independent may make more money but the album quality went DOWN. Of the 11 songs on here, 3 are worth listening to (2 are almost classic material and one is tight), 4 are ok, and the other 4 are trash. Guests are on 3 songs and are decent. Production is another area that bothers me, Cold 187 only produced 3 song of the 11 unlike the other albums where he virtually does all the album. Big Mil also did 3 songs, Above the Law did 2. DJ Silk, Tha Chill and Nick each did 1. For die hard fans get this but otherwise download the 3 songs worth listening to it. Hopefully they'll have a new one coming out but it's been almost 6 years and 187um is in jail so I doubt it.

2 out of 5 stars ATL at their WORST.......2005-06-09

I am a HUGE ATL Fan. Black Mafia 4 Life, know what I mean. I waited a long time for this release, and it was painful to listen to. It just seemed to lack direction. It might be said that this album (an independent record label) was so bad, that it ended their careers. Too bad, I loved ATL.

5 out of 5 stars A.T.L'S BIGGEST FAN T MONEY FROM THE DIRTYSOUTH.......2000-10-03

Once again ATL came thru with some of the funkiest music, and rawest rhymes I've heard to date. The most underrated rap group of all times never ceases to amaze me.Just when you think they could'nt possibly get any funkier, they come out with music and rhymes and game that just simply cannot be duplicated.I hope and pray that they come out soon. Now don't get me wrong I am a true hip hop fan I mean from eastcoast, dirtysouth, midwest, westcoast, but when it comes to TRUE FUNK and HARDCORE RHYMIN noone can touch these GHETTOSUPERSTARS.So please, please, come out soon,I can't stand the wait.

4 out of 5 stars The most underrated group of all time.......2000-05-03

I have been a fan of ATL since their Ruthless days. On Ruthless and Tommy Boy they got jerked but however all albums they made were D.O.P.E.and innovative! Now they set up their own label, Westworld Records and they released Cold 187um's solo LP "Executive decions" and their latest album is this "Rich thugs"album. As with every ATL's release I have to listen a few times to the album to hear the brilliance in production. This record is no exception. 187 and his staff of producers did it again, this is the bomb, tracks like "pawns","black mob", "smoke", "P.I.M.P." and ofcourse "ATL true" are a delight to my ears. As with all ATL releases this album is one of those albums that NEVER bores you, till this day I still bump every ATL album regularly. My only criticsm is that the album is too damn short. I also like to see Cold 187um reunited with his cousin Kokane in the near future. I hope Westworld records and ATL finally blow up and get their wel deserved props. ATL 4 life!
