There is a certain feverish creativeness to Elliott Sharp's genre-blurring guitar playing. And nowhere is this intensity more appealing to both general audiences and those who dig free-flying intensity than on Sharp's Blues for Next. Guests Eric Mingus and Dean Bowman create a vocal stir in an expanded version of the Terraplane quartet on one of these two CDs, while the hard-driving foursome handles the other disc in solid fashion. The group's joined by Hubert Sumlin on guitar for a pair of tunes, and it's the latter guest that seems to bring Sharp to the edge of heavy-duty blues power without steering the leader too far away from his core improvised jazzical footing. Of course, this is E-sharp, so there's plenty of squirreling around and swerving, careening guitar maneuvers. Saxophonist Sam Furnace provides brilliant baritone and alto, with drummer Sim Cain pushing the rhythm envelope dutifully on both acoustic and creatively clipped electronic drums. Bowman's wild, skittery vocals have a tremendous oomph, with Mingus keeping a wry poetic delivery that flies aside Sharp's incredible talents. --Andrew Bartlett

      Album Description

Blues Babe is the sparse yet fulfilling work of a low-fi princess. Recorded by Olga in her New Orleans bedroom, the album pulls from a bag of influences collected across the rural Mississippi Delta with occasional pit-stops into the metropolitan areas of Memphis and Nashville.

One of the most important acts in the history of jungle, Omni Trio (actually one Rob Haigh) stood at a crossroads of drum & bass--between the rough and the smooth, hardcore and house--and insisted there was no need to choose a path; the intersection was more interesting than any straight-and-narrow road could be. His first album, Music for the Next Millennium found this Pere Ubu, dub, and krautrock fan subsuming his influences into something so palatable it's easy not to notice how radical his enthusiasms remained. On most tracks (including the famous "Renegade Snares," included here in two different mixes) Haigh utilizes something that has all but disappeared from jungle: female voices. That's the house influence in Omni Trio's music, the disembodied diva sent swirling around the stereo field. Right alongside are Haigh's beats, which are chopped up with mind-boggling finesse and reconstructed with a dazzling sense of audio depth perception--that's the 'ardkore, Augustus Pablo, and Jaki Liebezeit influence in the music. If jungle eventually decided not to follow Haigh's advice (basically, Yogi Berra's immortal quip about taking the fork in the road when you get to it), you can't blame the gorgeous music found here. --Jeff Salamon

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Old Skool D'n'B.......2002-10-03

I just picked this up in a high-street store in a sale. Totally worth any money you pay for it. This album is well ahead of its time. Released in '95 - and so absolutely amazing in 2002. This album charts some of the best D'n'B around at the time. Each track is unique in its own way. You'll not be dissappointed buying this. It's atmospheric aswell as being hard as hell... all the vocal samples are euphoric and fit so well with the beatz and breakz.

Classic old skool D'n'B. Buy it now.

      5 out of 5 stars Orgasmic.......2001-12-21

One of my favorite albums out of any genre of music. But its an especially good piece of the earlier intelligent jungle and oldschool hardcore scenes.

This cd is actually the American version of Omni Trio's "The Deepest Cut", and fortunately they include here the "Rob's Reconstruction Mix" of "Renegade Snares", which is one amazing track, the vocal samples are top.

Soft while at the same time brain pummeling, all those chopped up speed amen breaks and lush strings. Its sterile but that doesnt mean its not good.

Its the perfect album to do anything to.Buy it before it goes out of print or something like Drum N Bass cds often seem to do right before I get around to buying them.

      5 out of 5 stars seriously beautiful.......1999-10-19

I buy a ton of music; both vinyl and cd's. This is one of the most well rounded examples of drum n' bass around. If you're looking to hear great music and learn about the diversity of styles within the drum n' bass category this is the cd to start with. From track 15 on is some of the most beautiful drum n' bass I've heard.

5 out of 5 stars A true jungle classic album from simply the best: Omni Trio.......1999-07-13

Probably one of the first albums I uncovered when the jungle thing started. Got me hooked. If you like thumping drum/bass, soul vocals, and some artful piano riffs, then this is for you. His other two albums, Haunted Science and Skeleton Keys(Hard one to get!), are much more developed and jazzy, but still uses the same elements of his first album. Worth getting for tur Jungle lover. My top 5 jugle albums of my collection of 20 jungle artists.

5 out of 5 stars I defy you not to like the magnificent Omni Trio.......1999-05-10

I stumbled across this CD at a record fair and bought it on impulse because of the one song that I knew on the CD namely 'Renegade Snares'. It was the best musical purchase I have ever made. The mixture of songs on the CD is pretty diverse and I can honestly say that there is not one track that I don't love. Of all the CD's in my collection this is the only one I can say that about and my collection is reasonably large. I would also say that I do not consider myself to be a devotee of this genre but as i'm sure you are all aware, there are good records and bad records in any genre. If you are reading this and you haven't heard Omni Trio before, Stop what you are doing now and listen to a sample. 'Soul Promenade' (track 12) is in my all time top ten. There is not much more I can say without doing Omni Trio justice so i'll simply say that this CD is a winner. Get in your car on a summer's day and get it on.

          3 out of 5 stars A Blues Smorgasbord.......2001-02-04

In just under an hour this disc takes you on a brief history tour of the blues. Some of these songs are classics, like Blind Willie Johnson's plaintive "Motherless Children" and Robert Johnson's haunting "Cross Road Blues." Kansas Joe and Memphis Minnie's original 1929 "When the Levee Breaks" gives you a chance to hear what the song sounded like before Led Zeppelin rewrote it forty years later. Muddy Water's powerful reworking of his "The Blues Had a Baby and They Named It Rock and Roll" is from his Johnny Winter-produced album Hard Again. Winter's supercharged live version of "Johnny B. Goode" is a smoking take on the Chuck Berry classic--but when was this considered blues? This is immediately followed by Blind Willie McTell's 1931 acoustic blues "Southern Can Is Mine." And it's sequencing like this that emphasizes the scattershot approach of this album. One minute you're listening to the powerful singing of Bessie Smith, next it's Brownie McGhee's country blues "Key to the Highway," followed by the horn-driven Electric Flag's take on Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor" with some excellent guitar playing by Michael Bloomfield. Even Tony Russell's brief liner notes fail to make any real direct connection between all of these songs other than some vague concept that everyone at some point has the blues. The album comes full circle with Keb Mo's wonderful Robert Johnson-influenced "Am I Wrong." Most serious blues fans will already have much of this music in their collection. If you're a novice fan, it's hard to argue with the quality of the songs contained on this disc. (Just don't base your entire blues library on this one disc!)
