5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh Joan Baez.......2007-01-12

After so many years, listening to Joan Baez' early singing is refreshing. She sounds young, spontaneous, fun, original, yet mature. The ambience of protesting songs and 60's years, is well reflected in this work. Voice and guitar beautiful. Two tunes with Pete Seeger are two remarkable specimens. This is an album for any coleccionist. Long live to Joan!

5 out of 5 stars classic Joan.......2005-12-27

I have the LP (a double set) not this CD. I have worn it out over the years because the performances are hauntingly good. My favorites are Tears In My Eyes, Man of Constant Sorrow, Railroad Bill and Silver Dagger. The unfortunate thing about the CD version is that they cut two tracks: Streets of Laredo and My Good Old Man, which was also a favorite of mine. It's hard to believe this album was recorded in 1963, because it could have been 2003 since the songs have and will stand the test of time. That's a testament to Joan's craft. What a talent!

4 out of 5 stars A HISTORIC CD..........2004-07-23

This is a compilation of twenty-two songs culled from about fifteen of her early live concerts, which were recorded between November 1961 and August 1963. The original double album had twenty four tracks, but the back of the cd liner explains that, due to compact disc format time restrictions, some songs on the original album are not included on the cd. The notes in the cd liner itself were written by Ms. Baez's mother for the original album.

On this cd, the listener will, indeed, be treated to early Joan Baez, accompanying herself on the guitar. As the songs are culled from her live performances, the listener will note the discernible adulation of the audiences throughout. Whether Ms. Baez is singing a traditional folksong, a folksong with political overtones, a duet with Peter Seeger, or a rock-n-roll parody, it is clear that the slightly insouciant Ms. Baez is enjoying herself, and it is infectious.

The quality of the cd is what one may expect from such an early, live recording, as it suffers from occasional lack of clarity and uneven volume, with the clapping of the audience throughout being louder than the song tracks. Still, this is certainly a cd to which some historical significance has attached, and one that all devoted fans of Ms. Baez will want to include in their collection, if only for her beautiful rendition of Peter Seeger's "Where Have All the Flowers Gone".

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Joan, except for Ballad Book.......2004-04-20

This is a great CD if you are a Joan fan. Has many of her popular ballads and a few fun songs in concert. Great selection for a small album.

5 out of 5 stars A Heavenly Overview.......2003-01-26

There are two reasons to have this particular collection from the fabulous "voice of a thousand birds" Joan Baez. The first is that it gives a lovely overview of some of her famous renditions of folk songs. Call it "important to your Joan Baez education". Every fan of Joan or of folk music should have her famous "Last Night I had the Strangest Dream" and "Silver Dagger", for example. Those aren't actually my favorite of her songs for some reason, but they're famous and you need to have them.

The other reason you need to have this album is this: "Where have all the flowers gone?" and "Pilgrim of Sorrow". Plain and simple - nobody should go through life without having heard her renditions of these two songs. They are superb.

Where Have all the Flowers Gone is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. And Joan's version is THE version to hear. You could buy this album just for that song, and you'd feel you'd spent your money wisely, because you'd keep hitting "repeat" on your CD player to hear it over and over and sing along.

Pilgrim of Sorrow, likewise, is shockingly powerful. Hearing Mahalia Jackson sing this song of Christian desperation is a spiritual experience. But hearing Joan Baez sing it is spectacular in its own way. Every startling note vibrates in your chest - her vocal range is unbelievable. The eruption of the notes themselves becomes the religious experience. It's incredible.

Folk music fans who buy this album for the famous collection of classics will be richly rewarded by the spectacular treat of owning those two particular, irreplaceable songs.

5 out of 5 stars Mrs Henderson Presents.......2007-05-16

A very enjoyable and at times funny movie. Judi Dench gives one of her best perfomances with excellent support from the other cast members. This is a movie one could watch several times and never tire of it. AAA+++

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely infectious!!!.......2007-03-28

From start to finish, MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS is the finest collection of solid standards and George Fenton's own recreated time-period evocations, fully fleshed and skillfully performed and recorded. The talents of singer Will Young will not go unnoticed, especially in his heartbreaking rendition of ALL THE THINGS YOU ARE.Your toes will be tapping, your lips will be smiling and you will be glad that this soundtrack and wonderful film are yours! You will be transported to WW2 England and you will be humming these tunes day and night.

5 out of 5 stars A Creation and Recreation of Nostalgia.......2006-04-23

George Fenton has put together a musical score for the completely delightful MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS that is a combination of original music deeply influenced by the time of the film (London during WW II) and some of the best 'old favorite songs' from that time. In the film the music is always present, whether in the performances on the Windmill Theater stage or in the lyricism of the acting by Judi Dench, Bob Hoskins and crew.

Fenton includes such terrific oldies as Johnny Mercer's 'Goody Goody', Charles Harris' 'After the Ball', Noel Gay's 'Letting in the Sunshine', Frank Loesser's 'Blue Nightfall', and Jerome Kern's 'All the things you are'. He segues these pieces with his own fine orchestrations and the result is a score that not only enhances the mood of the film, but one that stands alone as a recording. The various performers include Camille O'Sullivan, Charlene Ford, Ciaran Connolly, Elise Audeyev, Frances Garvey, Frank Lawson, Joseph McMurray, Kate Power, Matthew Hart, Melody Squire, Rachel Lawrence, Sir Thomas Allen!, Sophie Brown, The O'Brien Sisters, Vanessa Barmby, Vicki Davids, and Victoria Hay.

This is a recording to conjure up memories not only of a successful film but also of a time when music conveyed a lot of emotion during times of stress. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, April 06

5 out of 5 stars Mrs. Henderson Presents.......2006-03-24

Met ALL my expectations, having seen/loved the film - especially the orchestration, arrangements, and vocals. Sound quality superb.
I've played this CD for others - of all age groups - all agree it's a defininte winner.

4 out of 5 stars Upbeat and Fun!.......2006-03-22

Love this CD for the nostalgia! My favorite track is "All the Things You Are" by J.Kern and O.Hammerstein. This year's Oscar telecast produced a montage of film clips to this track including the last scene from "Mrs. Henderson Presents" and it was so emotion granting as is the song. Many of the other songs are from a time period right before WWII, but they are just fun and upbeat -- it was the depression, people needed to be uplifted with such such songs as "Letting in the Sunshine" and "Goody Goody." Judi Dench was asked by someone in the bleachers at the Oscars how it felt to be nominated this year for Mrs. Henderson, and she answered back, "just listen to the soundtrack darling!" How great is that???!!!!

If you are to buy only one compilation of early surf rock, this is it. Essential. Use it to soundtrack your low budget horror movie!

4 out of 5 stars Another Trip To Meeksville.......2007-05-08

This compilation covers Joe Meek's productions involving instrumental groups and pieces. And you get a stereo mix of the classic "Telstar" to boot plus other unreleased sides. Of course anything involving Joe Meek can involve anything from great to completely horrible but this set is mostly decent throughout with just a few clunkers I choose not name, you have to decide that for yourself. Also included are thorough liner notes with information about the tracks and the groups. So if you a fan of the Shadows you will definitely like this.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great starting point!.......2005-04-02

This is a great collection to start with. Most of their best material is on this cd. Sugar sweet pop that doesn't stop!

5 out of 5 stars Group with a female drummer.......2005-03-11

The Sherabons (as they were originally known) comprised Dennis D'ell (vocals), Anne Lantree (drums), John Lantree (bass), Alan Ward (lead guitar) and Martin Murray (rhythm guitar) - Peter Pye later replaced Martin.

Pye records signed the group on condition they use the name Honeycombs so that's what they became. Their first record, Have I the right, went all the way to number one in the summer of 1964 but subsequent releases made only limited impact. The next two singles (Is it because, Something better beginning) just made the UK top forty. Their fourth single (That's the way) made number twelve but the momentum had been lost and the group faded into obscurity.

This compilation includes all the hits, however minor, and a selection of their other recordings. If you enjoy sixties pop music, you are likely to enjoy the music here although (as you might expect) the outstanding track is Have I the right. You can, of course, obtain that track on a various artists compilation (its not difficult to find) if you prefer.

4 out of 5 stars Honeycombs - 'Have I The Right:The Very Best Of' (EMI).......2004-11-08

I'd been wanting to get a copy of their hard-to-find anthology CD for awhile, but never could find it anywhere. Then, unexpectedly EMI releases this twenty song 'best of' compilation disc.No complaints here. Many of you many not remember much about the UK band, that put out just a couple of lp's in their initial existence,1963-67.They were the genius project put together by infamous producer Joe Meek(R.I.P.).Obviously,their only actual hit "Have I The Right" probably is the tune more fans would recognize right off hand. But,the Honeycombs had several other decent songs,at least I thought.Like "It Is Because","I Want To Be Free","It's So Hard","I Can't Stop" and "Love In Tokyo" which,of course all appear on this 'Have I...' compilation.Notice that vocalist Dennis O'Dell sort of reminds me of '60's pop idol Gene Pitney(big hit,"Town Without Pity").The Honeycombs are just basically good-natured British Invasion pop.Should appeal to fans of the Mindbenders, the Searchers,Gerry&The Pacemakers and Bobby Vee.Heard the group does reunite for a one or possibly two off gig every now and again.

3 out of 5 stars Whoops, where are my favorites?.......2004-08-10

If you are fond of great, eerie mid-60s production (with a bit of schmaltz) - this a fun one to have. Most of my favorite Honeycombs tunes are NOT here. Their version of "Something I've Got To Tell You" (also recorded by Glenda Collins) is far superior and incredibly creepy, but it's not on this collection. Also, a fantasic early single called "This Year, Next Year" with spooky guitars isn't here. But, there are some interesting tunes nonetheless - Love In Tokyo, Is It Because, That's The Way, and She's Too Way Out (hilariously weird) are all pretty good. If you think that you may dig this from the clips you hear, you might consider searching for better collections on auction sites.

4 out of 5 stars Glad I Bought It.......2004-03-29

If you didn't like the Honeycomb's smash hit "Have I the Right", then you probably won't like the CD. As for me, this album has a number of gems, including, "Thats the Way", and "I Can't Stop". Yes they are campy pop songs, but it takes you back to an era of harmonies and youthful exuberance. Singer Dennis D'Ell often sounds like Gene Pitney, without the angst. No its not perfect, but if you liked British invasion pop, then its at least as good as Gerry and the Pacemakers and Herman's Hermits. I give it 4 stars for the happy upbeat harmonies and the fact that they were Joe Meeks showcase band!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, but just SOME of the very best of Nicolai Gedda.......2005-07-03

This is but a subset of the glorious recorded singing by Nicolai Gedda; however, it is a good sampler of the repertoire that made him legendary. And, at least a couple of the tracks ("Asile Hereditaire" and Lenski's aria) seem to be his best recordings of those particular works. Gedda is a member of a small circle of famed tenors noted for disciplined and artistic vocal production. He could find and consistently produce the "ping" we all love to hear. And, that was necessarily accompanied by flawless breath control. He holds the last note of the rousing "Hereditaire" for approximately eleven seconds! Onward! Ho! The emotion and delicate treatment he showed in Lenski's aria is a high-water mark. I can not imagine it being done better.

I first heard him in a recording of La Boheme (with Freni) in 1975 and have heard him in person both in Faust (1976) and in recital (1981). Whether on stage or in recording, Gedda is remarkable and consistent. If you are new to opera or are younger and addicted to the stars of today (and some of them are very good too), you should hear Gedda. It will raise your definition for what it takes to be a great tenor. Go find a recording of Fritz Wunderlich too.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent compilation.......2005-01-30

Beautiful, easy lyric tenor; also great diction and phrasing -- a good example to any tenor on how this rep. should be sung.

5 out of 5 stars Nicolai Gedda . . . the 4th tenor.......2004-06-13

Those of you who know the three tenors should look into this incredibly versatile singer. The first time I heard this remarkable tenor sing was from a recording of Mozart's Magic Flute. From then on I became an avid fan. This recording highlights how Gedda could go from singing lyric repertoire, to the bigger and more difficult French and Bel Canto and even tackling Russian and operetta. Any aspiring tenor and dedicated opera fan would do well to own this CD set.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Music ,Poor Sound.......2007-07-09

I am in complete agreement with the reviews already posted. Sound quality leaves a lot to be desired especially when compared to that great Blue Note sound of 'Evolution','Some Other Stuff' etc. Anyone with the slightest interest in Grachan Moncur III should check this re-issue out. The music speaks for itself.

3 out of 5 stars Poor Quality Re-issue.......2007-07-07

These fine albums were remastered by the Charly label and they did a poor job. The sound is tinny and brittle similar to many of the early editions from another re-issue label, Collectables. The tape speed sounds out of sync at the beginning of the New Africa suite as well. This excellent music stands on it's own despite the poor sonics of this Charly remaster.

5 out of 5 stars Free Jazz Classic.......2003-12-31

Out of the two albums combined on this cd, New Africa is clearly the more inspired of the two. Grachan Moncur III is an underrated jazz artist who was recently rediscovered in a New York Times article. He was primarily known as a jazz sideman to artists such as Jackie McLean and Archie Shepp but his solo recordings remain as powerful as ever. New Africa is an especially strong piece as he is joined by jazz giants Roscoe Mitchell on all tracks and Archie Shepp on one track. If you are into more traditional jazz you may not get into this but for those with adventurous tastes musically, this is the one to get.

4 out of 5 stars An essential record combined with a good one........2003-12-27

This is a CD reissue of two seperate LPs that were released under Grachan Moncur III's leadership. One of the LPs, New Africa, originally released on the Actuel label is as good as any of Moncur's releases on Blue Note(and that is very good indeed). The compositions were inspired by a visit to the Pan-African Festival of Culture in Algiers in 1969. Upon his return he entered the studio with Dave Burrell on the piano, Roscoe Mitchell on the alto sax and flute, Alan Silva on the bass and Andrew Cyrille on the drums. On the last tune of that date, 'when', they are all joined by Archie Shepp on the tenor.
In recent years, I have grown tired of the head-soli-head structure of most traditional jazz playing. But when faced with dates led by certain composers, I am reminded of just how powerful and beautiful a format that can still be.
Moncur writes in such a way as to seemingly inspire everybody involved. The tunes themselves are brooding, slightly askew and quite memorable. But it is the ensemble sound of the musicians he selects and their soli that always stay in my ears.
His own soli are always melodic even in his most free jazz moments and are highlighted by a burnished tone free of growling or effects.
Roscoe Mitchell on this CD sounds simply great. He plays on 'New Africa' in a hard-bop almost Marion Brown manner. This is about as straight as I have ever heard him play. His solo on 'exploration' is more typical of what I remember about his playing at the time- passionate, harsh and with a unique sense of how to space his playing. Mitchell never crowded a solo that I have heard.
Shepp's tone on his contribution is a highlight. His playing is one of the undersung highlights in the history of sixties jazz. He took the thick-toned tenor tradtion of Hawkins, Webster and Rollins and brought it to the free jazz of that period. The sound of Shepp emerging from an ensemble is as unique as the sound of Johnny Hodges emerging from the reed section of Duke Ellington's recordings.
The second LP on this CD, (Aco dei de madrugada) is Brazilian inspired. The first two songs on this portion of the CD are traditional, the last two are written by Moncur. He is joined by Fernando Martins on the piano, Beb Guerin on the bass and Nelson Serra de Castro on the drums. This is an accomplished group although much more bop oriented in their approach than the group on the New Africa sessions. By comparison, these musicians seem less inspired. However, when considering the rarity of Moncur led sessions, I appreciate the reissue. I have found that listening to it on its own is the best way to appreciate the qualities of this session.
Moncur's discography is one of the treasures of the history of improvised music of the last fifty years. Recently Mosaic issued a limited edition compilation of his work for Blue Note. Those sessions and New Africa belong in the collection of every fan of modern jazz.
