Bobby Hutcherson has been the most consistently innovative voice on vibes in modern jazz, making his mark early on Eric Dolphy's classic Out to Lunch. On Skyline, he once again demonstrates his effortless virtuosity and supple elegance. He teams with the fulsome alto of Kenny Garrett and the sensitive piano backing of Geri Allen, and his engaging, percussive sound disguises a deceptive harmonic sophistication, luring the listener into labyrinthine solos that manage to both charm and challenge. From the delicate lilt of "Candle" to the propulsive "Who's Got You," on which Garrett slaloms through Coltrane-like changes, the CD features a variety of moods and virtually demands repeated listenings. --Wally Shoup

From Jazziz
By its very nature, the vibraphone is a beautiful instrument, incapable of screams, screeches, or squawks. It takes a shrewdly sophisticated musician to evoke a full range of emotions on the vibes. And in the instrument's relatively short history, few have managed that better than Bobby Hutcherson. Throughout his career, Hutcherson has distinguished himself by his ability to draw a mysteriously warm tone from his mallets. And he has shown a great taste for adventure, a willingness to find beauty by taking chances.

He begins this disc by surrounding himself with complementary musicians: the exciting Kenny Garrett on alto sax, the versatile Geri Allen on piano, powerhouse Christian McBride on bass, and the masterful Al Foster on drums. The quintet produces a sweetly subdued sound and a charming empathy. On "Pomponio," a Latin beat repeats again and again, but the rhythm section varies the pattern just so, pushing soloists Hutcherson and Garrett to challenge themselves.

The next track, "Love Theme from 'Superman,'" could hardly be more of a departure. After a few luxurious chords from Allen, Hutcherson follows with an open, airy sound that whispers romantically in your ear. Check out how he uses grace notes and soft little sixteenth-note runs to add contour without cluttering his ballad.

Hutcherson shows that music does not have to be off-putting or avant-garde to challenge and excite. What he's saying - and what this album says so eloquently - is that danger and beauty breed when a musician avails himself of wide-ranging influences and surrounds himself with players who have equally open minds. The result here is music that swings, sobs, and scintillates.

5 out of 5 stars Dylan Over Easy.......2007-07-05

For those who think you don't like Dylan, this one is worth a listen. The voice is almost velvety, the lyrics accessible, the songs melodious, and the musicianship superb. The most underrated of Dylan's albums, perhaps due to brevity or lack of "gravitas"

5 out of 5 stars really good.......2007-04-10

This is the Bob Dylan album you play for people who don't believe the man is capable of writing good vocal melodies. This short album is FILLED with little songs that range from quiet and emotional to upbeat and friendly. All done in a country-rock style, too. Not a lyrical journey- a musical one. Worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars Throw my troubles out the door.......2007-02-20

Is it really any wonder
The love that a stranger might receive.
You cast your spell and I went under,
I find it so difficult to leave.

4 out of 5 stars A great reason to quit smoking lays within this CD...........2007-01-27

This should be an advertisement on why people should quit smoking. Dylan actually sings here, and he sings beautifully. His voice sounds so warm because he quit smoking during these sessions. As for the album, it's short, sweet, and charming, but it's not thought provoking or great Dylan. It passes the time very nicely. It's on the lower rungs of Dylan albums, but it's not awful or anything close to it. A slight, but charming work.

5 out of 5 stars Nashville Skyline-A new sound for a young Bob Dylan.......2007-01-11

This album is one of Bob's most unique. Bob duets with Johnny Cash on North Country Woman, combining two of the most beautiful, eerie talented voices of all times. This album is very county based with very romantic lines in most of the tracks. Certainly one of his best. This album also focuses on the time that Dylan changes his voice to a little deeper, more country rooted mature Dylan. If you are a fan of Bob, I highly recommend this album. I fell in love the first night I put it on.

East Nashville lies just across the Cumberland River from the mansions and skyscrapers Music Row built, but for Todd Snider it may as well be in outer space. On his seventh album, he paints a word-drunk, smart-ass, but always affectionate portrait of this gritty neighborhood--the dead-end dives, low-rent bungalows, and musicians barely scraping by--with a freewheeling comedic spirit as true to country as it is to rock & roll. He gives Mike Tyson a chummy hug, flips off the moral majority, fails to decipher "Louie, Louie," and turns an attempted suicide into a bittersweet recognition of human folly. Producer Will Kimbrough keeps the sound loose and tipsy, sometimes whittling back to a single acoustic guitar, which is just right for Snider's funniest, sharpest, and most life-affirming album yet. --Roy Kasten

This is another fine CD from a guy we want to hear more from right NOW!

4 out of 5 stars Songs to LISTEN to.......2006-07-07

I have always loved gritty, witty lyrics that make you feel you have lived what the author sings about. Either that, or you swear he was there with you when you experienced this or that series of events. Todd Snider rolls up life with the burrs, warts, fall-down-laughing-on-the-ground funny times, and sheer tragedies into a few pithy lines and then just comes and attacks you with them. I just discovered this guy last year, and felt like I did when I discovered Townes Van Zandt. I think all his stuff is phenomenal
By the way, I AM a conservative Christian, right wing Republican, straight white American male. I and my compadres don't find the song nearly as offensive as some people here seem to hope. The whole genre of the song is a satire and poking fun at a class of people. I thought it accurate (in fact, he dead on nails us) and funny, not mean spirited or hateful. In that it is actually welcome, unlike so much of the screaming across todays cultural divides from both the right and left.
Any suggestions of reviewers for artists in same genre as Todd are HAPPILY received at eddie.gilchrist@gmail.com

5 out of 5 stars This guy should be way more well known..........2006-02-24

Todd Snider is probably as close to Woody Guthrie as we're gonna get in this generation. The songs are clever or heartfelt or whatever, but they're always real. All of his CDs are great, this one especially.

5 out of 5 stars worth it just for "Iron Mike" alone.......2006-02-01

Todd doing what he does best--story-telling troubadour and occasional rocker. Just a very fun CD all around, unless of course you're a Conservative Christian, Right Wing, Republican, Straight, White, American Male or you work in the Tillamook County Jail. Then you may not find it all that amusing.

5 out of 5 stars from Solo Piano Publications.......2004-05-24

"Skyline Firedance" is my all-time favorite David Lanz recording. A double-album, one CD contains ten piano solos, and the second CD is contains the same pieces with full orchestration. Many of these songs are much more up-tempo than David's previous and later releases, and several are among his very best. Titles include "Dark Horse," "Dancing on the (Berlin) Wall," and "Vesuvius." It also includes "The Crane," which David composed for the 1990 Goodwill Games in Seattle, and his beloved arrangement of "Nights In White Satin." Most of these songs are also in "The David Lanz Collection" book of piano solos - my favorite book for teaching my students.

5 out of 5 stars David Lanz at his Finest.......2003-07-19

David Lanz's "Skyline Firedance" double CD is an excellent purchase. Lanz is accompanied by the IFS Philharmonic Orchestra of Munich on the first disc, and goes solo with his piano on the second.

The music couldn't really be more different than his previous releases. There is tremendous energy in the music, and Lanz combines melodic beauty with amazing piano technique..... a rare combination indeed. It says something about Lanz's talent that his solo-piano version of the tracks played by an orchestra on disc 1 more than hold their own. Indeed, many might argue the solo piano disc 2 surpasses the first disc.

There are many highlights on this CD. One can only sit back and admire Lanz's technique on the opening track "Vesuvius". What energy here! "Dark Horse" is another favourite, plus Track 7 "Prelude to the Dance". I'm not quite sure about "Nights in White Satin"- there's no disputing it's beautifully played, but it seems a little out of place here. The disc closes with a gorgeous track entitled "The Crane". This is peaceful and soothing.

Super value for money, this disc is highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Artist Best-Of, Orchestrated.......2002-02-05

This album qualifies as one of Lanz's "Best Of." It contains both fully orchestrated and solo works, and they are both absolutely fantastic. After hearing the full orchestra, one might wonder how the solo piano could hope to compare, and it does with amazement. Lanz is truly gifted. I would like to see more orchestrated works from this artist, they are just as superb as his solo enchantments.

5 out of 5 stars David Lanz At His Best........2001-06-26

Very rich in music, fully orchestrated and full of energy. I highly recommend this album for everyone who loves New Age music and to all those who like Classical Music. David took it to another level on this one. I myself like New Age artists that incorporate Orchestra to their music and that is why I loved this album. If you like this album, I recommend you to explore Yanni, Secret Garden, Giovanni and Bernward Koch.

5 out of 5 stars Quintessential David Lanz.......2001-02-25

To start off, if you got here by mistake, and are wondering who the heck this David Lanz guy is, BUY THIS ALBUM, because if you have any spirit whatsoever, it will practically blow your mind. This album, to me, is probably the album that shows the entirety of David Lanz's career over any other. While it is his most energetic solo album, and probably most energetic overall, he combines fiery pieces like "Vesuvius" and "Firedance" with more mellow ones such as "the Crane," as well as solo and orchestral versions of each song, to create a musical masterpiece. I have only played piano for a little over a year and a half, and this album at the moment has run full circle for me; the first piece of his that I played was "Firedance" and the latest one is "the Crane." Even though I have heard this album many times, I pick up new elements seemingly every time I listen to it. Also, I would recommend David Lanz' work in general to pianists of any level. I consider his pieces much like learning chess: easy to learn, hard to master. Most or all of them have a "hook," or a "chorus" to them, some pattern that he returns to several times, yet he is so good at just changing that pattern slightly, adding a chord here or transposing it into a different key, that it becomes difficult to master his songs. Also, while these songs, to an untrained ear or to someone who isn't listening for it, seem to be relatively simple, it is only when you start playing them that you realize Lanz' true piano-playing talent. He has extreme control over the dynamics of his hands- such that at times you don't hear half the notes in the left hand unless you listening to them, and he has some of the hardest, quickest patterns for the right hand on this album that I have ever played. "Dark Horse," one of my favorites, is a perfect example. It is extremely quick and played much of the time in quarter-note triplets (which Lanz loves composing in), to a point where I can barely play maybe an eighth of the song at the tempo he plays it. David Lanz is probably one of the best contemporary pianists, and while it's a shame he didn't win the Best New Age Grammy for "East of the Moon" this year, I consider it an atrocity that this album, or any song from this album, wasn't nominated for a Grammy when it came out eleven years ago.

1 out of 5 stars Good album - can't believe the poor remastering.......2006-10-19

Man, I always thought the guys who complained about the CD remastering of Dylan's albums were full of themselves. However, I was quite surprised that nobody sees the problems with this remastering.

I borrowed the remastered "Nashville Skyline" CD from a friend a few years ago when he found out I had never heard the album before. I listened to it a few times and promptly returned it, stating that it was really disappointing. It sounded like a short, poorly-recorded album of Dylan with a weird voice. When I tracked down a good turntable, I picked up a bunch of Dylan vinyl to see how other albums fared in comparison to the CDs. I finally got around to "Nashville Skyline" last month, and discovered that the album was pretty good. The sound quality was much better than I remembered, even though my vinyl copy is pretty scratchy. Then, I ordered the remastered CD last week, thinking that I didn't give it a good chance the first time...............

Oh boy! What a tragedy. The remastered CD is truly as awful as I remember. I could not believe that the CD could have been worse, so I did a track by track analysis. Turns out the entire CD suffers from problems not found on the vinyl. The CD has noticeable tape hiss, with attenuation of the higher frequencies, and a complete lack of punch. The real travesty is that some tracks sound like they have been remixed, as some instruments have been relocated and brought up or down in level. A real travesty considering the vinyl mix is pretty good. The remastering problems really "cheapen" the album overall.

If you have this album on vinyl, just listen to the first few acoustic guitar chords and how they have a "bite" to them on the record that is gone on the CD. It only gets worse from there. This is the only remastered Dylan CD I have been disappointed with. I regret buying the CD and will wind up making a CD copy of my record.

5 out of 5 stars C & W Combined with Bob Dylan, What a Match!.......2006-09-04

This is a young, well by today's standards, Bob Dylan crooning love songs. It must have been quite a shock to those fans of his who were used to him singing songs like, "Blowin' in the Wind," and "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands," to hear him singing "Lay Lady Lay" and "Girl From the North Country" with Johnny Cash. But surprise or not, this is a beautiful album and I'm betting that even way back then, many of his fans realized it. This is a Bob Dylan record that has stood the test of time (actually most of them do) and one you'll find as enjoyable today as your parents would have found it when it first came out.

4 out of 5 stars Very good album, just not my favorite Dylan material.......2006-08-14

Having enjoyed Bob Dylan's first nine albums (recorded in the span of little less than six years) and his evolutions as an artist in the same timespan, I grew up to love Dylan's folk/rock style and upfront lyrics. So it's no surprise that "Nashville Skyline" struck me as a bit of a step back for him, though it involved a firm step into country territory and away from what had become his signature sound up to that point.

Maybe it was the combination of his voice sounding so different, the songs not being as "outspoken" and the fact that I just don't enjoy Dylan doing country as much as I love him as a folk rock singer, but the result is that I didn't enjoy "Nashville Skyline" as much as his earlier material.

Having said that, though, it may strike you that I am stil giving the album four stars. I wouldn't penalize it with less, because in spite of my personal preferences in terms of Dylan, it's still a solid album with production values that have withstood the test of time.

5 out of 5 stars Oh Me, Oh My!.......2006-05-20

Dylan goes country and he does it well. This is a record far too short. Good songs here, but not enough of them. It seems like you've just put the CD in the player and it's over. But other than the fact that there isn't as much music here as on a normal Dylan CD, I have no complaints. Dylan is in fine voice here, sort of a country, high pitched twang that works very nicely. He tells these songs of love and loss with such sincerity, such honesty. But then he attacks everything he does that way, so it should be no surprise. This is just a wonderful, if a bit too short, record.

5 out of 5 stars Bob Dylan Goes Country.......2006-05-20

This is a nice record, good to put on when you want to relax with a glass of wine and a good book. I know that's not the usual way one would listen to a Dylan record, but this is not a usual Dylan record. "Nashville Skyline" is full of uplifting, twangy songs, plus it has the Dylan mega hit on it, "Lay, Lady Lay which has always been a favorite of mine. I also like "Peggy Day" an awful lot as well as the duet Dylan sings with Johnny Cash, "Girl From the North Country." That song is just sublime. "Tonight I'll be Staying Here With You," is another sublime song about the narrator's lost love that will pull a tear from the driest eye, if you're a sentimental girl like me anyway. Then there is "Tell Me that it isn't True" another song about lost love, well a love about to be lost anyway, as the narrator is asking his girl about another man. Yes this is, at least up to now, a totally new direction for Bob Dylan, but it's a direction I kind of like.

4 out of 5 stars Another interesting work from Villa-Lobos.......2007-06-16

CPO's fascinating survey of Heitor Villa-Lobos' (1887-1959) twelve symphonies is nearly complete. Only the fifth and tenth remain to be released. Here we have the Symphony No. 2, subtitled the "Ascension" symphony. According to the booklet notes, the symphony derives its name from the composer's frame of mind during the time of the symphony's creation. I am not quite sure what that means, or how Villa-Lobos' frame of mind is reflected in this kaleidoscopic symphony, but a recurring three-note motif, ascending at each repetition, appearing throughout the symphony serves as more tangible evidence for the subtitle.

Clocking in at fifty one minutes, the symphony is a substantial, densely orchestrated, highly contrapuntal work. The eighteen minute first movement contains eight sections alone, each with its own distinct melodic material. But, Villa-Lobos' inclination towards the immense should come as no surprise to those familiar with the composer's oeuvre.

As with Villa-Lobos' other symphonies, there are moments I love, but there are also moments I don't quite follow. But I really don't have any reservations about the melodically lush and highly varied first movement. In fact, this movement definitely ranks among my favorite Villa-Lobos' compositions. The material here is highly lyrical, especially the alluring, exotically-tinged central theme. Also, the movement's densely orchestrated and slightly ominous final section is especially exhilarating.

In my opinion, the symphony's remaining three movements pale in comparison to the first. The second movement contains some charming moments, but is somewhat forgettable. The third movement begins with a lovely, languishing melody, of the type for which Villa-Lobos is known; although, this theme is never fully developed. The finale is a bit too amorphous for my tastes (especially for inclusion in a symphony). In this movement, the music alternates between propulsive fragments that never seem to take off, and a series of swampy interludes that bog the music down. However, the symphony does contain a satisfyingly magniloquent coda dominated by powerful low brass and madcap violin playing (the later being a Villa-Lobos calling card). In the symphony's final measures, the violins push the music ahead through the repetition of a three-note phrase, while the French horns steadily climb from their lower register up into the stratosphere (remember - this is the "Ascension" symphony). The work concludes with two thunderous, fortissimo chords, in which Villa-Lobos seems to proclaim: "Yes, this is the end!"

This release also contains a three-minute orchestral work based on the skyline of New York City. That is, the melodic intervals here are intended to represent the differences between the roofs of various skyscrapers dominating the skyline of New York. I suppose it is not surprising that the melody (the term is used loosely here) is quite forgettable, but it is an interesting idea, nonetheless.

If you are collecting this series, this excellently performed and recorded release is highly recommended by this reviewer, especially for the symphony's first movement. My overall rating here is somewhere between four and five stars. I probably could have been swayed to a five star rating if I found the inner movements of the symphony to be just a bit more interesting. If you have yet to encounter a Villa-Lobos symphony, I would recommend starting with Villa-Lobos: Symphonies Nos. 6 & 8 - although any of CPO's Villa-Lobos releases are fantastic. If you are new to Villa-Lobos altogether, I would start with the highly varied Villa-Lobos: Bachianas Brasileiras (Complete).

While Dylan is one of the prime creators of "country rock," Nashville Skyline is as close to a real country album as any he's ever made. Unfortunately, Dylan's decision to sing it in an un-nasal, un-Dylanesque style leaves one of rock's greatest singers seriously handicapped, as if Ali had to box one-handed. As a result, this set can never be any better than its songs. When they're throw-aways ("Country Pie"), even all the great Nashville pickers on board can't help. But when they're good ("I Threw It All Away," "Lay Lady Lay"), they're unforgettable. --David Cantwell

5 out of 5 stars a dylan milestone: great album.......2006-04-05

I grew up listening to this album and it was essential listening on long car journeys. It is a piece of genius crossover by Dylan and was a hallmark of its time that lead to other artists, essentially bands such as the Byrds and Buffalo Springfield, following in Dylan's direction that lead to the start of Country Rock. The highlights of this album are the opening track with Johnny Cash, Girl From The North Country, and I Threw It All Away, a great song about love and loss. The musicianship is excellent with Nashville's finest session muso's on display and Bob Johnston's usual production finesse.Don't take any notice of ignorant opinion saying Dylan sounds weird on this production. [...] This is an excellent piece of music.

5 out of 5 stars Oh Me, Oh My!.......2006-04-02

Dylan goes country and he does it well. This is a record far too short. Good songs here, but not enough of them. It seems like you've just put the CD in the player and it's over. But other than the fact that there isn't as much music here as on a normal Dylan CD, I have no complaints. Dylan is in fine voice here, sort of a country, high pitched twang that works very nicely. He tells these songs of love and loss with such sincerity, such honesty. But then he attacks everything he does that way, so it should be no surprise. This is just a wonderful, if a bit too short, record.

5 out of 5 stars Dylan Goes Country and it's Fun.......2006-04-02

5 out of 5 stars A Pure Joy to Listen to.......2006-04-02

I love the guitar work on this record, especially on "Nashville Skyline Rag" and "Country Pie." I love the country flavor, but then I've always been a fan of country music. I'm a huge Dolly Parton fan and I like George Jones too. So, liking Bob Dylan as much as I do and since my husband has him playing in our house an awful lot, this tends to be one of my favorites of his. True there are no protest songs here, not hard driving rock, no secret messages, no songs that you can interrupt in a number of ways. This is a very straightforward record with very straightforward music that is just a pure joy to listen to.

4 out of 5 stars As good as her debut album........2006-11-26

"Into The Skyline", Cathy Dennis' follow-up to her multi-platinum "Move To This" is every bit as good as her debut. The dance beats are infectious, the hooks are catchy, and the songwriting and instrumentation are first-rate.

More a victim of changing musical trends than anything else, this album (which didn't do well sales-wise) is criminally underrated. If you are at all a fan of the house-infused music on "Move To This", I can almost guarantee you'll like this CD.

On a side note, I've always felt bad for artists like Cathy Dennis, who - through absolutely no fault of their own - suddenly find themselves out of favor with the music-buying public because of its fickle taste. And, while some artists like the Bee Gees and Duran Duran are able to return to prominence later, others like Ms. Dennis can no longer make a living at their chosen craft and must turn to other avenues. While Cathy has had phenomenal success writing songs for Kylie Minogue and the like, it must rankle that she, a talented dance artist in her own right, must remain behind the scenes and in the control booth - instead of on stage as many of us (and perhaps the lady herself) would prefer.

4 out of 5 stars An underrated, immaculate dance-pop album..........2006-03-11

I purchased this CD almost ten years ago (I was 14) and to this day it stands as one of my favorite dance-pop albums. Though this sophomore effort by one of the UK's highest paid women (as another reviewer mentioned, her songwriting credits for Pop/American Idol, Britney, Kylie, and others have earned her some major $$$ in royalties)was poorly recieved upon it's release in 1992, it should be considered ahead of it's time as it mirrors the dance pop that exploded globally in the late 90's and early 2000's. The songs on this set (largely co-produced by remix/dance extraordinaire Shep Pettibone) are immensely infectious and range from housy, gospel-tinged pop to luscious, AC balladry; they offer a little something for everyone. Uptempo numbers like first single "You Lied To Me" and the bouncy "Irresistable" are just that, and the ballads on here showcase Cathy's gorgeous vocals and remarkable songwriting chops. The standout track for me is the stunning, Carpenters-esque gem "Moments of Love". With it's sweeping strings, touching & tender melody, and Ms. Dennis' delicate yet soulful vocal delivery, this tune is a classic in my book.
Unfortunately, after the disc failed to make a significant impact on the charts (to my knowledge, "You Lied To Me" and "Irresistable" barely missed the top 40 in the US and "Moments of Love" was a minor hit on AC radio), Dennis drifted into pop obscurity thereafter, with the exception of the crtically-acclaimed yet commerically-panned 'Am I The Kinda Girl?.
For the true pop enthusiast, this CD is a must.

4 out of 5 stars This CD Rocks!.......2006-03-07

"You Have Another Lover" is a serious dance track, to which you can not stop tapping your feet at about 80bpm. If you like to dance, and I mean serious, wild, crazy bump and grind dance then you will love this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Amazingly underated album.......2005-11-05

Cathy Dennis' sophomore album was more a victim of changing trends in music than lack of quality. Following up her mega-successful debut "move to this", Cathy teamed up with dance producer Shep Pettibone (who was simultaneously producing Madonna's also poorly recieved Erotica album) to create an album that blended early 90s dance rhythms with a mellow, adult contemporary sound.

First single "You lied to me" was high dance floor drama with its chugging rhythms and soaring keyboards. An accussatory Cathy tells her lover the game is up and she has caught him cheating. It was a minor top 40 hit in the US. Subsequent singles didnt crack the top forty in the US but did well in in her native UK and Japan.

Overall the album is a great piece of work. Standout tracks are the summery sound of "Irresistible", the bouncy europop of "Why?" and the gorgeous ballad "moments of love".

Other tracks are also fairly standard but enjoyable dance-pop which could have easily been on her first album. "Change will come" and "We've got to fight" certainly sound like holdovers from those sessions.

This album features Cathy on songwriting credits for nearly all tracks showing her desire to grow as an artist.

The album didnt do well and cathy queickly went behind the scenes to write for other artists. But this album is an awesome addition to anyone's collection who appreciates fine pop songs and a a lovely voice. RECOMMENDED!

    5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Done.......2005-08-12

Growing up in the 90s, this cd brings back great memories, being a teenager, and just enjoying life, I liked "Why" but my favorite track off of this cd is "Moments of Love", it is such a beautiful song, and she sings with it with such feeling, and it always got me. I realize that things change and she is doing work for other artists, but in her time she shined, and ones like me never forgot.

5 out of 5 stars Handel: The Organ Concertos, Vol. 1 + 2.......2007-05-07

The Handel Organ Concertos played by Marie-Claire Alain have been my favourite vinyl for many years. I have played them so much that they were totally scratched and couldn't be played any more. It was a wonderful discovery to find these wonderful concertos on cd. Marie-Claire Alains interpretation is the best of all. She plays with a wonderful freshness and lightness which fits perfect to these baroque masterpieces. You can hear them again and again without getting tired of them and they are suitable for every kind of humour.

    5 out of 5 stars Paillard and Handel - A great combination!.......2007-05-02

For years I lamented selling my classical LP collection partly because of the loss of the wonderful Jean-Francois Paillard/Marie-Claire Alain recordings of Handel's Op. 4 and 7, also known as the Organ Concertos. Vinyl availability here in the states of this complete set was at best limited and I assumed Erato would quickly offer these splendid performances on CD but for me, that was not the case. For years, I had to make do with the single disc offering containing Organ Concerto Nos. 4&6 from Op.4 and Nos.4,1&13 from Op.7. And then came word of this splendid two volume beginning set from Boston Skyline and I knew my search was coming to an end. For years, Boston Skyline has been in the business of returning to music listeners - classic recordings and performances, (rightfully "acclaimed as milestones,") from the 1950s through the 1970s with their "From The Vault" series. Titles as varied as "Dance Music From The High Rennasiance" to Transcribed J.S.Bach Concerti have been the label's mainstay and finally we can add one of the great performances of Handel's splendid Organ Concerti to the Boston Skyline line up. As to these very special performances, Maestro Paillard has always treated Handel's best loved compositions with great spirit, elan and flair; never, (IMO,)overdone but just right. And here he doesn't disappoint. The recorded effect is simply stunning partly because Marie-Claire Alain's always expressive playing, (here on the Organ of the Kern de la Collegiale de Saint-Donat,) is as close to perfect as I can image. And partly because of the warm and very airy acoustic balance between soloist and orchestra. Recorded in the early 1960s, the Paillard/Alain/Handel Organ Concerti collaboration was and is one of the triumphs of the analog era and should go to the head of the class for warm and sensitive playing in an equally warm acoustic setting I can only describe as ideal for this music. Remember, the first half of Handel's Op.4&7 are available as a two CD set so don't forget Volume One and request Volumes Three and four soon. I hope you enjoy these performances as much as I do and many thanks to Boston Skyline for remembering them. Best regards and happy listening, Hal Owen.

    Album Description

It has been said that Philip Glass is the `Godfather of Trance' and evidence of that is found in the remixes that a number of young producers/musicians began sending to Orange Mountain Music as early as 2002. These unsolicitated mixes became the genesis for Glasscuts, Philip Glass Remixed (release date Sept 2005). This CD presents a very diverse program without any one dominant style. The artists are Androoval from Uruguay, Robert Bell from Australia, Brian Bender from the US, Hector Castillo from Venezuela, Taylor Dupree from the US, Sebastian Escofet from Argentina, impLOG, from the US, Woody McBride DJ ESP from the US, Marcos Romero from Uruguay, Kate Simko from the US, Dietrich Schoenemann from the US, Luciano Supervielle from Uruguay and Dave Wesley from the US.

We invite you to immerse yourself in Glasscuts, Philip Glass Remixed with open ears to experience a Glass that is reminiscent of the past, but with an adventurous contemporary twist.

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars This is just awful - I was suckered by the excellence Reich Remixed.......2006-07-23

I just assumed that this would be as equally wonderful, and that Glass' music would be even more translatable into the "trance" genre, or whatever the kids are calling it nowadays.

Sadly, it seems that this was done by junior high kids with a computer and Acid Foundry or whatever that cheap software is.

No creativity, and, oddly enough, not even any real sense of Glass' music still being in the "remix".

I am a huge fan of Glass; I am not a fan of this kind of music, but since I am also a fan of Reich and since, to my total surprise, I am quite enthralled by the Reich Remixed CD, I figured I really needed to give this CD a shot.

What a waste. This is totally amateur, but without the occasional genius that some amateur can manage. Strictly, totally, and banal amateur yuckiness.

    1 out of 5 stars a huge letdown..........2005-12-21

Yeah, it's fun and easy to beat up on remix albums since there are so many mediocre and terrible ones out there... but, wait: here's a great idea... let's give the pioneering, repetitive, trance-like minimalist music of Philip Glass the remix treatment... after all, Reich: Remixed was fabulous... surely the same kind of creativity can be unleashed in this project... But alas, something went terribly wrong here... these are mostly unbearably monotonous, grating, overlong, amateurish productions by remixers who don't seem to even GET (or enjoy?) Glass' music. A real missed opportunity and a huge letdown... ick...

1 out of 5 stars The Ever Recyclable Glass .......2005-11-20

This is just another insipid release from the Orange Mountain label, which keeps putting out anything with the Philip Glass
name on it - even if it is flagrant garbage. Several releases have been issued which about 90% have the same old songs, just performed by different people. In fact, Philip Glass has become more banal and bovine in the last few years because he knows anything with his name on it will sell to the trendy modernistic music crowd. Overall, I believe it is time to stop
    recycling Glass.

1 out of 5 stars Pop music with only a hint of Philip Glass.......2005-10-28

This music should be categorized under the "popular music" category, not "classical". All the pieces have an incessant drum beat typical of popular music. This is unlike any other Philip Glass CD that I have and I have about a dozen of them. Where can I get rid of this?

    3 out of 5 stars Sound Effects.......2005-09-24

When this album was announced, I was quite looking forward to it; before hearing anything, I compared it to the wonderful work done on "Reich Remixed" which takes some daring approaches to Reich's music and does an excellent job (with a few exceptions) of being new and exciting. Unfortunately, Glass Remixed isn't as daring or as good.

Much of the music is overshadowed with Glass's music and themes. It's as if someone was playing the original music in the background and sound effects were added to it. Throughout listening to Remixed, these sound effects got in the way of the music and I ended up digging out the original pieces and listening to them. However, there are some excellent pieces of interpretation contained within: Etude #2, the Tirol Concerto, and the Saxophone Concerto stand out (especially the Saxophone Concerto since I don't care for the original piece).

The other mark against this effort is all the work had to come from the Orange Mountain Music catalog due to ownership complications. This is not to say there aren't outstanding pieces in the catalog, but this restriction limits most of Glass's seminal works from being considered.

As a huge Glass fan, I was mildly disappointed, but I applaud the effort and the concept behind it.
