5 out of 5 stars Brilliant music from the Chicago underground jazz community.......2004-05-17

Man, Chad Taylor plays a lot of drums on this disc! Like a one-man wrecking crew, he comes out full bore and seldom lets up. And that's perfect for the expressionistic vibe these guys lay down. The band charges out of the gate with the title cut, "Shed Grace," an attractive burner. Things morph into a drum/percussion virtuoso world-vibe in the intro to "The Refusal," perhaps the signature number and most ambitious selection of all the quite remarkable numbers here. If Chad Taylor's playing live, he's doing quite a job of it simultaneously hammering his cymbals and laying down a striking motif on hand drums. Meanwhile, Matana Roberts blows some righteous clarinet lines, with Josh Abrams (double-bass) nicely grounding the proceedings with bass fundaments of the first order.

Altogether hip, smart, and quite accessible for avant-garde jazz, this should appeal to more open-minded fans of groups like Tortoise and the Chicago Underground Trio, as well as various other Nu jazz warriors.

Very nicely done.
