Adding to an impressive list of pianoless quartets to come out of New York's "downtown" scene in recent times, trumpeter Russ Johnson's Save Big sets itself apart with its heady combination of spatial awareness, melodic flow and rhythmic acuity. An historically attuned modernist in the mold of Dave Douglas, Johnson can be brash or gently bruising. He and the lithesome alto saxophonist John O'Gallagher (leader of the pianoless Axiom quartet, featuring saxist Tony Malaby) interact exceptionally well. They know the value of taking their time, whether savoring their contrapuntal parts, entering into the ethnic sphere of "Indonesian Folk Song" or building to a sudden climax on "Saguache," which sounds just as it reads: leisurely but pointed, airy and wry, mysterious but clear. Bassist Kermit Driscoll, who has worked with Douglas, Douglas and drummer Mark Ferber are with them every step of the way. --Lloyd Sachs

Product Description
Here's a new American classic: jazz that's wonderfully fresh, clean, inventive, vibrant, accessible improvised music that builds on and extends the American jazz tradition in the way Jack Kerouac, Aaron Copland, Ansel Adams, and Frank Lloyd Wright advanced art in their respective fields.  From musical recollections of grandeurous wide open spaces to classic jam-packed smoky jazz clubs — and all the multi-culti crossroads in between — Johnson and his crackshot quartet make Save Big a thrilling musical event.

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy did more than any other band to fuel the sing revival of the '90s, due largely to the group's appearance in the 1996 film Swingers. Since then, the craze has waned, although you couldn't tell it by BBVD. If anything, the combo has approaches their fifth album with more gusto and verve than ever, infusing their old-school jive and greasy horns with a New Orleans sensibility and panache and, in the process, creating their strongest album yet. Although their songs sound like they were lifted right out of the Zoot-suited '40s, the band writes all their own material, taking swing into a raw and modern direction. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy by rights will still be here when the next wave of swing arrives. --Jaan Uhelszki

4 out of 5 stars Great type of Jazz........2006-08-17

Growing up in the 50s is what I listen to, but after seeing a live show of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, I bought a CD at the show. After listening to the CD, I bought two more CDs at Amazon.com. The music has a real beat to it, and you can't help but move some with the music. It really rocks. Great stuff.

5 out of 5 stars A 5 star treat indeed that is mmm delish.......2006-07-26

This cd is delightful from beginning to end, full of suprises, swing, New Orleans jazzy jump blues ,and smokey infectious vocals that are smouldering hot. Red hot horn riffs that remind one of Bourbon street. Hot tempos and exotic swinging rhythms. Let this cd voodoo your voodoo.

5 out of 5 stars Fun, soulful, carefree...like the spirit of New Orleans.......2006-07-04

I can't compliment this band enough. The contagiuos beat and happy rhythms of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy are contagious... Their music makes you want to dance!

I saw them perform recently at the House of Blues in New Orleans. It was an incredible show. Just prior to singing the title track of this CD, Save My Soul, lead singer Scotty Morris told the crowd that he had written the song 14 years ago. He felt he owed a debt of gratitude to the musical tradition of New Orleans. But now, post-Katrina, the song carries more meaning for him and for all who love N'Awlins.

Save My Soul is a fun, soulful, and carefree CD. Buy it. Enjoy it. Share it with those you love.

Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars This is the Best!.......2005-01-20

I own three of BBVD's CDs and this one is the best. You just have to move those feet! I just love these guys.

5 out of 5 stars Hear Oh Yeah in the PC Game Casino Empire!.......2004-10-14

I found this out accidentally! The PC game, Sierra's Casino Empire, which was released in 2000, uses an early version of the song, "Oh Yeah" as background music. I thought it was just a really cool song in a PC game (and, er, the demo, at that!) when I heard it again during the October 11, 2004 episode of the NBC TV show, LAS VEGAS. It made me more curious about the song, so I looked up the lyrics, and found that the song was actually by this truly cool band. Get the CD, buy the PC game!

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

While the debate rages about why a country as large and multicultural as England has yet to produce a noteworthy MC, Roots Manuva makes a strong case that a contender has arrived. On "Witness 1 Hope" (hands down, the best cut on the album) and "Article," Manuva drops some clever Jamaica-meets-Brixton, patois-inflected rhymes over producer Lord Gosh's otherworldly beats and sci-fi sound effects. Innovative, this album is. Jurassic 5's Chali 2na's thick baritone adds some Left Coast flavor to "Join the Dots" as Manuva waxes about South London life. This release captures a unique snapshot of black British musical tastes with equal parts funk, dub, roots reggae, electronica, and hip-hop. Check out "Highest Grade," a dub pro-weed anthem, and "Sinny Sin Sins," which focuses on Manuva's run-ins with religious types ("Do I need a middleman to link with the Creator?"). This album is for freethinking hip-hoppers who appreciate Outkast and crave exposure to authentically futuristic beats and Afrocentric, avant-garde ghetto rhymes. --Dalton Higgins

5 out of 5 stars Classic, best Hip Hop album of 2001.......2004-04-20

I cant say enough about how wicked this album is. I'm a caribbean new yorker and visited England in 99 when his debut was released, "Brand New Second Hand". I had heard of him before from Ninja Tune cuts, but his album was over my expectations. I have to big up my brothers in Brixton and other parts of London who showed me much love when I came. I didnt know anyone and they made my trip worth it, unlike the anglo saxon people who walk around London with their nose so high I have to wonder if their head hurts from looking down at everyone so much. Otherwise England was great, Roots Manuva is a great representative of the Black musical scene in London. His contributions to the international stage of hip hop will hopefully rival England's best contribution to hip hop, the Ruler Slick Rick.

4 out of 5 stars Inspired though inconsistent.......2003-12-18

'Run Come Save Me' is a landmark in not only UK hiphop but hiphop in general, as it is very different to anything else you will come across in its whole approach. Unfortunately the incredible songs are the obvious ones - 'Bashment Boogie', 'Witness', 'Join The Dots', 'Sinny Sin Sins' and 'Dreamy Days' - and the other tracks are merely good. If Roots Manuva had made a 12-track album of this quality, it would have been incredible, but at an overlong 17 tracks some of this is down on standard, though there are no bad tracks. Roots Manuva is lyrically acute as on 'Sinny Sin Sins' which sums up the problems with organised religion extremely articulately, and he also crafts some exciting sounds blending his unique, British rapping voice to influences of ragga, garage and Afro-Caribbean sounds, while staying 100% hiphop. It may not be flawless, but he's a major talent who one day could easily make an album that is.

5 out of 5 stars Another release your grandchildren will be listening to...........2003-11-28

By now Roots Manuva is a household name, also outside the UK. Where I believe he's a real star. And I've had his first record since it was out for like a week. It was one of my first hiphop records and my first UK hiphop record, and it still remains one of my favorite records of all time. This one has been out for a few years too, so it should be old... But this is so tight. And it is on many levels. The beats are incredibly original. They are strange to hear first, but in a few minutes your bouncing in your seat. They whole record sounds jamaican. It's all there: some reggae, heavy dub basses, dancehall vibes. Roots Manuva is also jamaican and your can hear that in his voice. He speaks a mix between jamaican and english. Somehow that makes a really cool combination. He has a deep and rough voice that he flexes troughout the range while he drops his laidback flow. He sounds offbeat at some times, but this man can really flow and drops more styles than your average mc. This whole package brings you classic material. It's not music to play everyday, but in the right mood it's perfect and skipproof. If this was dropped today it could've been really hot, with the whole dancehall, garage hype going on today. Where busta rhymes still busts double time flows over overused drumloops, Roots Manuva has been making the perfect crossover into hiphop for years. There is something on it for everyone. If you are ready to expand your taste, check this.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Solo Debut!.......2005-04-12

Trumpeter Russ Johnson is going to be unfairly saddled with the sort of curse that will end up befalling many of his kind. As a white male, classically trained trumpet player specializing in a sort of Democratically multi-cultural jazz, he joins the ranks of Ralph Alessi, Dave Ballou and Ron Horton as post-Douglas jazz trumpet players. As good as all of these artists are, this is something they're all going to have to contend with, the endless comparisons ... as long as Dave Douglas continues to dominate the jazz polls.

So what to make of Johnson's debut album then? It is as auspicious a debut as one could hope to hear from an artist as young as he. Americana influenced melodies like "Saguache" cross paths with Eastern tinged tunes, such as the aptly titled "Indonesian Folk Song" and the elastic free-funk of "Rapid Comfort." Grinding rubato grooves commingle with post-Ornette harmonies on "The Loper" and a stop-start bop line pummels on "Figuratively Speaking."

Johnson's articulation is spot on, but he can bend a phrase or smear a note as emotively as any of his contemporaries. Alto saxophonist John O'Gallagher releases sinuous lines that sound like Kenny Garrett channeling Julius Hemphill. Erstwhile bassist Kermit Driscoll finally reappears on the scene in telepathic union with drummer Mark Ferber. The rhythm section accompaniment is phenomenal, indicative of all the qualities that make for great jazz = great listeners. The band sounds so in-tune with each other that they seem capable of taking the pieces in any direction.

Save Big would be an impressive title in anyone's discography, but for an artist whose limited recorded output mainly consists of co-leadership in the (admittedly excellent) Other Quartet, this debut album introduces Russ Johnson as an artist to keep an ear on for the future.

This album is full of wonderful songs - some funny and upbeat and some sincere and sweet - all are good. My son's favorite track is "Beautiful World" - it gets him dancing every time! All of the songs on this album have a message, whether to be eco-friendly, to not make fun of people or that "Life Is What You Make It" (my favorite song on the album). This is by far my son's favorite children's album... and mine!

From his idiosyncratic delivery and left-field lyrics to his rootsy basslines and thumping studio tinkerings, Mr. Manuva has always fancied himself something of a dubmeister, paying homage to his Jamaican roots. Here, he gets to explore his "mixing-desk-as-instrument" ethos to the max, reworking tracks from his recent Run Come Save Me into spectral shadows of their former selves, as well as presenting a few assorted rarities that didn't make it onto the LP. Cuts like "Highest Grade Dub" and "Brand New Dub" are direct descendants of the King Tubby-Augustus Pablo school of smoke-filled trickery, while "Tears" and "Revolution" are more '80s and hip-hop influenced, respectively, but come with deep and dirty dub signatures. Like everything Mr. Manuva turns his hand to, Dub Come Save Me is weirdly sophisticated and serves as an essential companion to the original long player. --Paul Sullivan

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A bit better than OK.......2007-03-09

I like roots, but this dub disc is mediocre. It's a decent effort overall but there are a couple dogs on there. The Charli-Tuna collab is pretty tight. I like about 60% of this disc.

4 out of 5 stars Better than Run Come Save Me.......2002-09-17

I'm a huge fan of Brand New Second Hand, and although I enjoyed Run Come Save Me I was a little dissapointed with it. It was great to hear Roots Manuva expand his musical horizons, and he came up with some great songs. But as an album, I thought it was unfocused and at times boring. I picked up this remix version of Run Come Save Me cautiously, but as soon as I put it in my stereo it blew me off my feet. Original and creative, it took me back to the simple yet powerfull statements of Roots' first album, while at the same time exploring new and exciting ground. An incredible album, one that makes it clear Roots Manuva is one of the most incredible and original talents today.

    4 out of 5 stars Unexpected release..........2002-07-29

After "Run Come Save Me" and it's creativity, popularity, and critical success, I figured Smith for the kind of guy who would let it all go to his head and try to prove himself with another groundbreaking hiphop album. Instead, he has taken his skills on the mic and the mixer and had some genuine fun creating traditional dub cuts. I'd almost like to remove all the full-verse rap from this album and have a pure dub CD to listen to, but the alternating vocal tracks & instrumental tracks work very well...

5 out of 5 stars If you like dub..........2002-07-26

A fantastic "remix" album (some new material..even Chali 2na contributes some new lyrics), Roots Manuva has really embraced the dub tradition on this release...something he has been hinting at on his previous two. He lets the album run the gamut from old school Perry-styled hard beats to more contemporary Mad Professor's chaotic rhythms. Some of the tracks are reminiscent of his hip-hop stylings on the "original" "Run Come Save Me" while others are reworked tunes in the classic dub styling.

A worthy addition to any dub fan's collection and a must-have for any Roots Manuva fan.

5 out of 5 stars Three of the best!.......2004-12-08

I agree with the previous reviewers who call these three songs 'must haves' and 'favorites' because they truly are three of Big and Rich's best songs. Never Been down is such a great song... filled with the optimistic never give up attitude that is in so many of their songs. Rollin (Ballad of Big and Rich) is, of course, the must have introduction to the world of Big and Rich and it tells you all that B&R are about. Save a Horse is on almost all of the B&R CD releases... but there is a reason for that too, it is a great/fun song.

5 out of 5 stars More Must Haves From Big & Rich!.......2004-12-07

These three songs are great. Need I say more? After all of the ridiculous music that's being put out today, it's refreshing to have songs like these. Real music is great!

5 out of 5 stars My three favorite Big and Rich songs!.......2004-12-07

This CD has Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy), the song that most people know Big and Rich for... which will always be a classic, I think. If you haven't heard it, you need to, because it is hilarious and the singing is phenomenal. Rollin' is the song that introduces you to Big & Rich and what they and the muzik mafia are all about. Still, the most exciting addition to this CD is Never Been Down. It is on the fan pak release as well and it is a gorgeous song. The first time I heard it, it instantly became a favorite. The lyrics are very uplifting and the vocals are breathtaking. I'd definitely recommend buying this one.
