Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Know what you are buying.......2006-11-23

This review is meant to point out that this 3 CD set is made up of a lot of spoken word interviews. Folks should know what they are buying since this set is fairly expensive. I love Doc Watson, he is a national treasure. I saw him live with David Holt awhile back, it was a very enjoyable evening, just as this set is if you are in the mood for the wondrous stories behind the man and his experiences. Think of it as a superb podcast, if you are going on a road trip and want stories and music, this is an excellent choice. But, if you are looking for just music, you might be frustrated. Most of the songs have talking as part of the cut, so if you tire of hearing the stories and just want music, you might be better served by Doc's many other great discs. I particularly like "Elementary Doctor Watson" and the two fer "Live & Pickin' / Doc And The Boys."

5 out of 5 stars A superb addition to any music library collection.......2002-10-10

Legacy showcases the legendary life and work of Doc Watson in this three-disc collection featuring a concert CD with Grammy-Award Winter David Holt. Two the CDs of songs and conversation look back over Doc's 79 years in a informative and solidly entertaining presentation. The discs comprising this unique and highly recommended collection include Beginnings (18 songs ranging from Cousin Sally Brown and Deep River Blues, to Beaumont Rag and Freight Train); A Life In Music (16 selections ranging from Sittin' on Top of the World and Down the Road, to The Tennessee Stud, and Tom Dooley); and The Legacy Concert (18 cuts ranging from Shady Grove and Old Molly Hare, to Don't Get Weary and Stand By Me). Legacy would make a superb addition to any music library collection and is a "must" for the legions of Doc Watson fans everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars A Convert!.......2002-07-30

Wow. How did I miss this guy for the past few decades?!?!? I love blues music, and traditional blues led me in a roundabout way to Doc Watson. Anyone who loves music with a FEELING should buy this album. He has one of the smoothest, most soulful guitar styles I've ever heard. He can play harp with the best of them and he plays a mean banjo as well! His stories about his life in music are priceless. This is easily one of the best CD collections I've purchased in a long, long time.

5 out of 5 stars the master's life, with guitar, banjo, and harmonica.......2002-04-24

In recent months two Doc Watson CDs have documented this American master at the beginning of a career and, nearing 80, in career twilight. The first of these, preserving performances from the early 1960s, is At Gerdes Folk City (Sugar Hill). The second, recorded in the late 1990s, is this wonderfully conceived and brilliantly executed retrospective.

Having followed Watson's work since 1967, when I purchased Home Again! (Vanguard) -- still among my favorite of his recordings -- I am certainly familiar with his music, but Legacy tells me things about his life I didn't know, thanks to David Holt's friendly but probing questions. The first two discs intersperse conversation with music, to riveting effect. Watson candidly addresses everything from his blindness to his musical influences to his career highs and lows to his continuing grief over the death, in 1985, of his beloved son and musical partner Merle. Disc #3 is a live Watson/Holt concert, mostly songs and instrumentals but with some talking, including a history of the real Otto Wood, star of the North Carolina outlaw ballad Watson has sung for at least four decades.

Obviously comfortable in Holt's company and energized by his enthusiasm, Watson plays and sings at his best, which is very good indeed. An excellent accompanying booklet takes up where the interviews leave off, with lots of great photographs. No Doc Watson fan will want to be without this winning and worthy tribute to a hero of traditional Southern music.

    Album Description

Young female vocalist/bassist, Belinda Underwood, brings the tradition of jazz songwriting back to center stage. Hypnotic, sultry vocals and frank lyrics; artfully crafted arrangements; jazz standards as well as Belinda's jazz originals; all-star cast of musicians includes Airto Moreira, David Friesen, Phil Baker (Pink Martini), Martin Zarzar (Pink Martini) and others.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Delightfully Unexpected.......2005-04-19

The emotional voice of Belinda Underwood calls to you from a velvet glade where tender green things grow, and you cannot help but be drawn in to the story that she weaves with each song. The lush character of her voice carries the melancholic hint of each song's meaning, making you feel like you understand much more than the words themselves can tell you. Refreshingly intimate original compositions (for a vocal jazz album), or is it the way she sings them? Come to think of it, the jazz standards on the album seemed intimate too...
The musicians playing with her are fabulous (she chose sensitive and emotional players), and I was surprised to find names I recognized: David Friesen, Airto Moreira, members of the band Pink Martini...
My listening experience was delightfully unexpected.
    I heartily recommend this work.

      Album Description

CHINA ROSE is a guitar lover's delight. There's a striking combination of guitars and inventive keyboard parts throughout CHINA ROSE, not to mention the catchy lounge-inflected grooves and ethnic beats that propel each instrumental along. But instead of common African or Celtic styles being integrated into the soundscapes, GuitarGarden's debut integrates appealing Asian motifs, providing this provocative CD with a unique signature sound.

The CHINA ROSE CD was produced and performed by Pete Prown on lead guitar, keyboards and guitar synthesizer. Also joining him is former editor-in-chief of Guitar magazine, Rich Maloof, on acoustic-fingerstyle and electric guitars, and a cast of stellar sidemen.

In all, GuitarGarden's CHINA ROSE CD contains nine tracks of passionate and dynamic World Fusion music. With soul.

5 out of 5 stars Exotic Guitar Magic!.......2005-09-22

What a surprise! This GuitarGarden CD somehow mixes World music with progressive guitar playing and the result is brilliant. There are catchy drum beats and lush keyboards blended with really great acoustic and electric guitar parts. I can't stop listening to it!!

4 out of 5 stars Peaceful, Hypnotic and Haunting.......2005-06-29

The tune Erhu was used on a musical interlude on NPR's Morning Edition yesterday. It was a 30 second sample, but I couldn't get the melody and the rhythm out of my head all day. The music on this CD is an interesting combination of New Age, Ambient, Asian, & Smooth Jazz Chill. It's peaceful, hypnotic and haunting. This is definitely something different when you need a change of pace from what you usually listen to.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Kindel's Amazing Debut.......2005-07-19

Kindel's creation 'Liquefaction' is the new powerhouse in the industrial electronica scene with the powerful debut of 'Chrysalis' that was followed up earlier this year by the beautiful unmatched sophmore album 'Emerge'. I have corresponded with Kindel the artist and can only say that she is a wonderful person who is very helpful to answer queries. I am now a fully-fledged fan of Liquefaction and this debut album has 13 wonderfully captivating tracks. The music ranges from brooding electronica pieces to an ethereal dance rhythm. Kindel's vocals add to the strength and complexity of the lyrics and the sound of the songs. She has such a wonderfully powerful voice that can take hold of the listener and move them with the enticing elixir of her sounds. There are some very notable songs like 'Solipsystic' that is more of a dance beat song. Then you have the vocal amazement of 'Are You My Enemy' an almost entrancing song. 'Breath' is a cross between dark melodies mixed with ambient synths. Then the 3 remixes of Solipsystic, Dollhouse, Heaven From Here are also highlights. The weakest song in this tight album was 'Knotted Wire' which was a battered industrial theme that just didn't seem to come together.
Kindel's debut album is superb and I recommend this piece of mastery to any industrial or ambient music fan.

        5 out of 5 stars Liquefaction:Chrysalis...Alien, Inc. Review.......2004-05-26

Liquefaction's "Chrysalis" Album took my quite by surprise. As a long-time fan of Kindel's music, I really appreciated the growth from her last album to the creation of Liquefaction. And such passion from a young woman shows that she's got what it takes to keep on making good records for millenia to come. I'd recommend this album to anyone looking to find the answer to their question, "What is THE album I need to buy?"

        5 out of 5 stars eclectic.......2004-05-07

It's an eclectic mix of unique sounds, rhythm, and vocals hat harmonize in a beautiful melodic mix. It is well worth buying and is great listen.

        5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2004-05-04

I 've heard a lot of people in this industry do this kind of music wrong. Liquifaction is one of the few that does it right which is only topped by the fact that the front person, Kindel, is shattering the gender ceiling set up in this male driven genre. She doing what few women out there can and she's doing it as well as the big boy's. I would completely recommend this to anyone. She also works with a ton of other great artists on this project, which only adds to the incredible mix. I'm also a huge fan of Diverje, who she seems to have worked pretty closely with on this project. So here's my two cents worth. If you get a chance, Pick it up. You won't be disappointed.

        5 out of 5 stars Liquefaction's Chrysalis.......2004-05-04

Liquefaction's Chrysalis is full of amazing energy, powerful vocal's, and sounds. Kindel, the lead vocalist has a seductive yet soothing voice that captivates the listener. Each track contains something unique and different that shows you Liquefaction is destined for so much more in the future. I highly recommend this to EVERYONE! This album is a refreshing journey that introduced me to a whole new world of music! There is a versitility of beats, sounds, and surpirses packed in this fantastic album! I love each track and cannot say ANYTHING disappointing about it. I guarantee if you purchase this CD, it will quickly become one of your favorites!

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars A great album by a great band........2007-01-09

If you own other Floater albums and are considering another, buy it. If you don't own any Floater, but are planning to buy your first, well, buy it... If you've never even heard these guys, but like "intelligent" metal, buy it. Deep lyrics and complex instrumentals, draw comparisons to Pink Floyd in a band that sounds nothing like Floyd.

This album doesn't have their "big hit" Danny Boy, so if you're looking for that song, go buy Gliph - its a great album too. What this does have is 14 great songs. It grabs you by the throat with "Here Comes the Dog." The creepy chilling story of "The Queen of the Goats" is another of my personal favorites, and I challenge anyone to find a cooler version of "Waiting for the Sun" including the original.

Seriously, I've owned this album since it came out, and years later it still gets played REGULARLY, and I have a giant music collection.

        Album Description

Jazz master, pianist and arranger Ted Howe rocks on his second release on Summit, swingin' the music of pop/rock icon Elton John with full aplomb into the jazz scene! Joined by jazz superstars Joe LaBarbera and John Patitucci, this disc delivers what Howe fans have learned to expect - the unexpected and the extraordinary. Ted Howe invents and uncovers Elton's jazz roots, from vintage favorites to obscure gems and contemporary classics. Originally hailing from Boston as a student of famed Berklee teacher Harry Smith, Howe eventually joined the Berklee faculty himself. He then went on to tour, conduct, arrange and play with some of the most famous names in show business, including Mel Torme, Bud Shank, Zoot Sims, Buddy DeFranco and Joe Williams, to name a few. Striding in as Fats Waller, then swinging with Nat King Cole-style block chords, Howe's "Bennie and the Jets" blasts from the past to any generation. As a cha-cha, you'll love "All the Girls Love Alice" too much to sit down, as subtle harmonic sophistication reinvents the story of "Alice". Elton's eloquent instrumental "Carla Etude" inspired Howe's jazz waltz treatment à la Bill Evans. Sink into John Patitucci's haunting arco bass and Joe LaBarbera's brushes and spice. Greasin' in from big band to blues, "Philadelphia Freedom" takes on a new identity. But, believe it, Elton devotees can still sing along! On "Border Patrol," Patitucci's exquisite upper register floats in a contemporary melodic presence...but gospel soon takes hold as this trio com-mu-ni-cates! Howe's translation of "Circle of Life": mambo! Vibrant, fast-moving and fiery, this is an exciting, virtuostic display of Latin percussion, expanding the "Circle" beyond the jungle. Sinatra missed "Blues Eyes"...but you won't, as Howe strides in again for a time travel back to the days of classic dark lounges for this romantic gem.

Soulful, rhythmic, tight, familiar but unique. Ted shows that he has paid his dues and then some as a player, teacher, innovator, and arranger. While every song is ultimately engaging, Border Song shines with a pulsing driving force that wraps you up and carries you along. Cirlce of life suprises with its ablility to transform a powerful orchestration to a jazz trio and still have the same exhilarating affect. For those of you that don't know Ted or his music, this is a wonderful introduction. Highly recommended!

After the sweeping reforms of Alexander the Great Russian music tried to modernise by taking on the compositional practices of Western Europe. The natural reaction to this was to eventually evoke a countermovement that turned to the ancient traditions of the Orthodox Church, all while continuing to assimilate elements of the new Western influence. Most typically the deeply meditative solemnity of the ancient tradition was maintained which contrasted markedly with the often more gradiose statements characteristic of much Western sacred music since the Renaissance. So while the title of the CD 'Divine Theatre - Religious Opera in the Russian Church' seems to promise quasi-operatic theatrics the results here always maintain their underlying solemn austerity. Even where there is a solo part - effectively an arioso - it is always written so that a clergyman could take the part so as to sound like he were reading a passage of the Bible to the congregation.

The composers represented here are mostly from the 19th century. Many of them have so lapsed into obscurity that even their dates are unknown. Others include Chesnakov who was obviously composing before the Russian Revolution but survived the upheavals to live until 1944. The CD is a fascinating documentation of a Russian choral tradition that had been hidden from our view for many decades and much of it of exceptional musical interest.

As usual, I have only superlatives to describe this music making. The choral singing is as exceptional as ever. They belong amongst the finest choirs active today - little wonder they draw admiration from choral directors such as Paul Hillier who called this CD 'delicious'. Combine that with the usual great sound from Opus 111 and you have yet another winner.
