After years playing behind legends like Rueben Blades, Ray Baretto, and even a stint with David Byrne, percussionist Ralph Irizarry takes his timbales front and center, backed by a solid acoustic band and giving the current Latin roots-jazz scene a new contender. Roots it is, but Irizarry is no follower; and his arrangements are clever, a bit quirky at times, and there's not much one could call down time on this recording. Timbalaye offers rock-solid rhythm, playful vamping on the horns, and lots of fine soloing; and while there is a kit drum and bass rhythm section, they play second to the percussionists most of the time, giving this smooth Latin jazz a bit of a conjunto feel. In addition to Irizarry's timabales, special note should be taken of pianist Luis Perdomo, whose heavy left hand and "between the groove" melody lines give this recording a special flair. --Louis Gibson

Great chice for Latin Jazz lovers and/or Irizarry's fans.....this cd brings the power of percussion made by Irizarry and other percussionists, with single and complex rhythms tha make a special mixture of sounds.....this is not an easy-listening cd......i had to hear it about ten times and then I loved it. This is not common latin jazz....this is a special and very well made latin jazz for listeners in search of something different.... In few words..if you like percussion, timbales, congas and its performance on Latin Jazz, that's your choice. good luck.

Irizarry's Best Kept Secret CD shows the unique style of Ralph and his crew, playing a new kind of latin jazz: it's smart, misterious, colorful and precise. There are lots of latin rhythms, from 6/8 to "plena"....just hear track #3 "vieques si" and you'll discover irizarry's best kept secret: precision. It's important to mention the great work made by Roberto Quintero on percussion and Waldo Chavez on bass (bravo!!). An excellent blend of virtuosity. You won't be dissapointed. By the way, check out the nuevo millenium cd (if you don't have it). No comments. Peace. Emburrandisimo.
