Editorial Reviews

On Heart of Hearts, tenor and soprano saxist Rick Margitza and mates play with a relaxed, at times jaunty lilt that makes for pleasant, and, on occasion, compelling listening. Not that they don't swing hard and grab the ear, but there's a light crispness here that gives the music a slightly abstract feel. Margitza's tenor has a warm, mature tone, round and expressive, reminiscent of Charles Lloyd's. For most of the album, he melds John Coltrane-inspired phrasing with a light, Stan Getz-like sound that implies assurance and a hint of sentimentality. On the nine-minute "Father John," however, Margitza makes direct sonic references to the Coltrane influence, roaring through the changes with an edgy zeal; inexplicably, the cut fades out unresolved. Throughout, the rhythm section complements Margitza's perambulations in fine fashion, but, make no mistake, this is the sax player's show and he stretches out accordingly. --Wally Shoup

Customer Reviews:
The picture.......2006-12-11
I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

Customer Reviews:
The best ever version.......2002-06-07
The wonderful cast transports you to the realms of Gilbert and Sullivan, to make you feel that you are experiencing a first night in 1881! John Reed, as Bunthorne, an aesthetic poet is superb, camp, subversive and a complete fraud. If anyone is not aware, the story of the opera is based upon the idiosyncracies of the Aesthetic movement in England of the 1880's and Gilbert used the public parodies of his friend Oscar Wilde as his major source. The rest of the cast, chorus and orchestra , under the long experienced 'Goddie' are superlative and make for one of the finest line-ups in D'Oyly Carte history. Revel and enjoy, for this is quite the best.
The Golden Cast of D'Oyly Carte!.......1999-04-13
My wish had always been to see John Reed and the D'Oyly Carte Company in a performance of Patience. My mother had done so, remarking that, 'You'd need patience to watch it', she was coloured in her opinion, since she wanted to see 'The Mikado', but had gotten the wrong tickets! The recording, made in 1961, is superb in every detail. You are with the cast, on stage, in the auditorium, it is such a 'live' performance. The dialogue is delivered exquisitely, whilst the singing is uniformerly of the highest standard. I recently portrayed 'Bunthorne' and throughout my performances, I felt that I was continuing the legacy of Gilbert and Sullivan. All the past history of performers were there. I feel that Patience is a magical Savoy Opera. Do not miss the opportunity to own such a definitive performance. Maybe the subject of the 'Art Nouveau' periodof Victorian England is dated, but as one critic has already stated, every generation 'throws up' its poseures, to be knocked. 'Ah, me! lack aday!' BUY IT!
The Definitive Recording.......1998-12-09
For those who prefer the traditional Savoyard renderings of the G&S canon, this is far and away the best recording of this parody of the cult of celebrity. John Reed leads the cast as a delightful Bunthorne, and the recording contains all of the opera's dialogue. "HMS Pinafore," "The Mikado," and "The Pirates of Penzance" may be better known, but "Patience" is deserving of a wider audience.

Largely piano driven, Festival of the Heart showcases John Boswell's delicately warm tones on an hour's worth of seasonal hymns and carols. All but the title cut and the album's closer, "Eastern Star" (both composed by Boswell), are traditionals and classics, many dating back to the 17th century. Mendelssohn's "Hark! The Harold Angels Sing" resounds beautifully in a duet of piano and bells. Other standouts are Handel's English-horn-adorned "Fugue" from the Messiah and a reverent take on "Coventry Carol," the collection's oldest hymn, which dates to 16th-century England. For those for whom Christmas is more enchanted and holy than commercial, Festival of the Heart is true blue. --Paige La Grone

Favorite.......2007-01-10
My sister gave me this cd for Christmas several years ago and it remains one of my very favorite. I like to give this cd as gifts to friends when giving Christmas music.
From Becca...best Christmas CD in my collection!!!.......2006-12-06
I, too, have played this CD every Christmas for years, and it is my all-time favorite Christmas CD. It's beyond description in terms of its beauty and various arrangements.
The Best.......2001-12-27
I have had this CD for years, and it remains my favorite Christmas collection of music. It is the first CD that I play during the holidays. It was a happy accident that I bought this recording.
from Solo Piano Publications.......2001-11-13
John Boswell's "Festival of the Heart" is one of the best Christmas albums I've ever heard. Primarily a piano album, Boswell adds synth and bells, and is joined on some of the tracks by guitar, percussion, English horn, and flutes. Boswell keeps his treatments of the carols fairly traditional and dignified, but somehow breathes fresh life into all of these songs, making them new again. As a piano teacher, the onslaught of Christmas music everywhere I go, plus listening to carols in all states of wonder and disarray all of my working days for about eight weeks a year have dramatically reduced my enjoyment of holiday music. So, it is a joy to find an album that reminds me of why this music means so much to people and why it continues to endure and enthrall no matter what the world is going through during the holiday season. All of the selections on this album are of more serious nature (as opposed to "Up On the Housetop" or "Frosty the Snowman"), and would provide an elegant backdrop to a holiday dinner or get-together or an evening of tree-trimming. Don't just relegate it to background music, though. This album needs to be savored again and again, allowing it to bring Christmas peace and tranquility. The sixteen tracks include two Boswell originals, and all of them are so good that I can't pick a favorite. Guaranteed to delight!
For Christmas Spirit, the BEST CD EVER MADE........2000-12-30
This recording is a rare jewel that is incredibly worth discovering, experiencing, and sharing with anyone who wants to feel in a true spirit of christmas. Every cut exudes warmth, beauty and serenity. This CD has regularly accompanied the Christmas season in our family for years now and it never gets tired. By the way, everyone who has been turned on to this CD that we know feels the same way we do. If you're going to buy one Christmas CD, I can't recommend enough that it be this one.

Incredible chant recording!.......1999-10-29
This is an incredible recording of English and Latin chant. The Latin and English Offices of Compline are especially noteworthy. The Benedictine Nuns of Stanbrook have produced a remarkable, literate and prayerful English version of Compline. In my book, this is a desert island disc!
First rate chant recording.......1999-09-16
This is a gem. The monks sing very well, and sing with joy and love. The settings of Psalms 45 and 137 are outstanding.

Long annoyed with the dry, dusty nature of American history textbooks, author Joy Hakim set out to create a multivolume narrative that revolved around the deceptively simple idea of freedom. But as her books, the PBS series they spawned, and this, the show's soundtrack, have proven, it's a word whose meanings have been filtered through myriad historical, cultural, and political prisms. The three discs here span some 67 performances across 90 years of recording history, from WWI-era recordings of "Yankee Doodle" (who knew it had so many verses?) and Cohan's "Over There" through a dizzying array of folk, country, pop, R&B, and classical selections. And if it virtually ignores two decades of hip-hop and shortchanges nonvocal jazz (what's "freer" than Monk and Miles?), it's nonetheless an intriguing collection that delivers surprises and musical revelations on every disc.
Hoary American patriotic standards are cast in fresh light, while other worthy performances (a vibrant take on "Erie Canal" by Dan Zanes and Suzanne Vega; Booker T. & the MG's and Terence Trent D'Arby's soulful "A Change Is Gonna Come") are rescued from obscurity in a collection that seems to delight in trashing the narrow-minded marketing philosophy that has largely ghettoized American culture in recent years. Sousa, Seeger, Sly, and Simone are hardly the least of its charms. --Jerry McCulley

One of the Best.......2005-07-02
If you're going to spend some rather serious bucks on a compilation CD, you could do a lot worse than this! It takes us on a multidimensional, multigenerational trip through some of the plateaus of American music from the first half of the 20th century, on. I guess Columbia is trying to catch up with Sony on these all encompassing compilations, and if so, more power to them. This recording touches so many bases and appeals to so many different sensibilities, fans of different genres, etc. that it would be impossible to cover it in under 2,000 words. I'm far too lazy to attempt that, amyway. Suffice it to say that there isn't a bad cut on the CD and that the compilers actually took some thought into arranging the thing.
As it's nearing 4th of July this year and our country is not in the best of shape (OK, maybe I'm spending too much time looking in the mirror after my showers this summer!), this CD collection should come as a refreshing and fulfilling reminder of what American music is all about, and why we should remember why it's still a vital, freedom loving country, with room for differing styles, tastes, etc!

Freedom ROCKS!.......2002-12-19
I thought this was going to be yet another predictable compilation of traditional freedom songs.Thankfully,it's not. It's by far the best holiday gift I could ever imagine giving-great songs-great range of artists, doing songs both well known and unknown.I never heard Nina Simone's "I wish I knew how it would feel to be Free" and it's fantastic. Same holds true for Dave Brubeck's version of "Because all Men Are Brothers." In this time of forced patriotis, this compilation offers a creative and memorable collection of songs that are stirring-not sappy, fun and not forced-for listeners of all ages. Where else could you find Duke Ellington,Bruce Springsteen, Suzanne Vega and Mahalia Jackson..Billie Holiday, Woody and Arlo Guthrie,Bob Dylan, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Johnny Cash and Jerry Garcia?? It's amazing that such great music is finaly put together in one boxed set. I can't wait to see the tv version on which the cds are based.

Customer Reviews:
Lanza in (mostly) top form.......2004-11-28
This is a "twofer" CD, consisting of the 1955 soundtrack to the movie Serenade and the 1956 Cavalcade of Show Tunes album. Before I go any further, however, I should acknowledge that I was one of the liner note writers for this release. But I have no financial interest in the CD, and am simply reviewing it here because to date no one else has commented on it!
Serenade marked Lanza's return to films after an absence of three years, and revealed a voice that had darkened considerably, while still retaining its brilliant upper register. Stylistically, this is also a much-improved artist in many respects from the sometimes-wayward tenor of the early 1950s. Anyone who compares Lanza's superbly operatic renditions here of Amor Ti Vieta, Lamento di Federico, and O Paradiso with his earlier versions (all featured on the CD Mario Lanza Sings Opera Arias and Duets) will immediately detect the new-found control in his singing.
That's not to say that all of the Serenade material is outstanding. Lanza's renditions of Nessun Dorma, O Soave Fanciulla, Di Quella Pira, and the title song are below par, with the tenor uncharacteristically strained in the upper register and rough in his approach. But redeeming everything are the oustanding renditions of the arias mentioned in the previous paragraph, together with Lanza's sensitive singing of Di Rigori Armato from Der Rosenkavalier, a superb Torna a Surriento, and an unsurpassed Dio! Mi Potevi Scagliar from Otello. Lanza also recorded the Act III duet from Otello with Licia Albanese for this film, but time constraints have reduced it to a brief extract here. (The entire duet, however, can be heard on the aforementioned Arias & Duets CD.)
The other album featured here showcases the romantic side of Lanza. Beautifully recorded, Cavalcade includes passionate renditions of Yours is My Heart Alone, Only a Rose, Will You Remember, and other selections from operetta and musical comedy. Although Lanza may indeed be *too* zestful here for some tastes, vocally at least, he is at the height of his powers. The voice is rich and round - gloriously consistent throughout its registers - and the abundance of effortless B flats, Bs, and even a high C reveal a tenor in formidable form.
Highly recommended.
