Two greats interact here, in recordings from 1952-54, with stunning intuition. Brubeck, as always, makes a virtue of his limited fleet-fingeredness. He has no need to hurry in the company of Paul Desmond, an alto saxophonist akin to Getz--light and never imbalanced. His and Brubeck's musical rapport had been forged in Brubeck's earlier octet and would continue for many years in his sterling quartet. The program here emphasizes standards. There is light combo support on some tracks. For "On a Little Street in Singapore," Brubeck and Desmond take a thoughtful, fragile jaunt through foreign streets. In "Trolley Song," the trolley bell sounds in Desmond's ringing horn. On "My Heart Stood Still," the pianist is alone, hammering heartily in his folksy, front-parlor way. --Peter Monaghan

WHY DIDN'T THEY TUNE THE PIANO??????.......2002-07-25
I absolutely LOVE Brubeck and Desmond, but this record leaves a LOT to be desired. While the playing is pretty great, as you'd expect, the fact that the piano wasn't tuned for the studio cuts is unforgivable. The way Desmond's sax was miked makes him sound way too "airy" and leaky, like his embouchure was disintegrating, which I'm sure it wasn't! The live recording on board the Rotterdam is superior to the studio tracks, and both Paul and Dave are truly in their element on this last song, with Dave REALLY hitting his stride, in his own inimitable way, but this one track doesn't make up for the rest.
Stunning.......2002-05-18
When I heard this had finally been released on CD, I cried tears of joy. Dave Brubeck (G-d bless him) is still alive, healthy and active and this CD is as wonderful as anything he has ever done.
I remember the first time I heard anything from this, it was on the old NY jazz station WRVR. Although I was a Brubeck/Desmond fan, I did not recognize either of them as there was no bass or drums. When they announced it, I immediately bought the LP.
As brilliant as Paul Desmond was, there is no sax player in my knowledge that sounds anything like him. Like a Bill Evans, a Watrous, a Basie, all he has to play is one note and you know it is him. Nowhere is that more evident than in this CD.
Brubeck and Desmond shared a friendship for many years, going back to when Brubeck tried to join Desmond's band in the army. He has talked many times on how special it was and how fascinating it was to do duets with Paul. He talks about how hard he tried to "comp" behind Paul as it made Paul play that much better.
So you can feel the fun these two great men had in doing this.
The best cut, IMHO, is the final one, "You Go To My Head". That was the whole start of the project, they wound up doing a set of duets on a cruise. This cut is a recording from that cruise.
Do NOT listen to this CD as background music or while doing something else. You will miss the subtleties of it. Do listen to it, preferably on good headphones with the rest of the world locked out.
The last of Desmond with Brubeck.......2002-04-10
Paul Desmond died 2 years after this album came out, and it is a fitting goodbye. Take a listen to 'La Paloma Azul' and you will see what everyone is talking about when they describe his horn playing as like "a dry Martini". The albulm is a studio recording with Desmond on sax, and Brubeck on piano: that's it. But what a sound it is. (One of the tracks is a live recording taken from a Jazz Cruise around that time.) The music is as sweet and soulful and emotional as it gets. Enjoy!

Pop this 15 track disc under the laser and get ready to enjoy 76 minutes of one of the most simpatico relationships in Modern Jazz history. Indeed Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond carry on the rich tradition layed down by Lennie Tristano and Warne Marsh but with more swing and less stoicism. I recommend this disc to anyone who likes long sweet alto lines and lyrical keyboard work. The rhythm section is servicable but the real stars are Mr. Brubeck and Mr. Desmond. The sound quality is fine as the material is culled from two live sets at The BlackHawk in San Francisco and Jazz at Storyville.

Seven tracks, dormant since recorded live in Mexico City in 1967, spotlight the Brubeck Quartet in fine form. Average track time is about eight minutes, which means that the band stretches substantially more than on studio LPs. That's especially welcome from alto saxophonist Paul Desmond, whose subtle playing was sometimes lost in the context of shorter material, but who radiates warmth and fascination at length here. On Brubeck's "Koto Song," for instance, his lovely, restrained approach to the Asian-tinged melodic material is stunning; can't say the same for Brubeck's rather drippy faux Orientalist solo on the same tune, though, nor for his playing in various other spots, which often drags things down. "Sweet Georgia Brown" is a corny choice, and it's played as such--probably a ploy to please middlebrow palettes--but again Desmond saves it from dreardom; the obligatory "Take Five" is included, as is "Forty Days," a not-dissimilar excerpt from a Brubeck oratorio. --John Corbett
Customer Reviews:
Dave's just a treasure!.......2001-12-07
What hasn't been said aboutDave Brubeck? Look at this guy, he'll be older than George Burns if he retires. But Dave loves the music and playing before live audiences! If I could only have one set of cd's of one artist, it would be Dave Brubeck! You don't need any other music. I have all his albums. What a musician, his music spans generations and all themes. Much better than Jamal or Ellington or Earl garner. Dave Brubeck is the best Jazz player in this century and the last, bar none. George Jones
An absolutely classic, must-have live recording.......2000-07-03
Who was the idiot that left these recordings in the vault all these years? Music as great and universal as this needs to be out there for people to feed their souls on. Better late than never though and this companion concert to the one that produced the 'Bravo' Mexican-themed record is a revelation. In terms of performance and especially in terms of sound it is a better night than 'Bravo' which was one hell of an inspired performace in its own right. The band comes out smoking on an awesome version of 'Mr. Broadway' (Brubeck's ode to 'Detective Series')and doesn't let up until a fabulously varied version of 'St.Louis Blues' at the very end. There are two 5/4 metered tracks performed, the magnificent 'Forty Days' and a drum-solo-less version of 'Take 5' where Desomond gets to stretch in interesting directions. Everyone needs to have a copy of this record, and especially people who hate jazz or think they hate jazz, because it is nearly impossible not to be moved by it. This era is long gone, but Brubeck's classic quartet with Desmond, the epitome of 'American International Cool Jazz,' is still the group that turns most people on to the glories of Jazz without in any way having watered itself down or compromised. They are simply upbeat and non-cynical in an infectious way, and you cannot hold that against them as true artists; they are never mawkish or cloying and they absolutely refuse to pander.
one of their best.......2000-01-26
This recording is excellent. This record, unlike so many jazz recordings of this era bristles with energy, yet avoids self-indulgence. The talent of these players was at its peak when this was recorded and along with "Bravo Brubeck" are must- haves. It will make you want a better stereo.
Marvelous renditions of well known compositions.......1999-09-20
When I reviewed the track titles I was hesitant in purchasing "Buried Treasures" as I already owned several renditions of several tracks. However, let me encourage you to buy this recording. There is an excellent "concert" atmosphere and Brubeck and Desmond are in excellent form - especially on St Louis; Take Five and Broadway. These tracks especially contain the essence and brilliance of the Brubeck Quartet.

Best Brubeck Album... bar none!.......2007-02-18
Yeah, yeah, Elementals is superb... both versions are included on this reissue. But Iberia and Unisphere are utterly fantastic songs, and World's Fair is an amazing experiment with 13 beats per measure -- it WORKS! The percussion on Cable Car is progressive and entertaining, too. It's so rare I find an album (cd) which I have to listen to three times before I can take it out of the player. Best to buy this in the boxed set "For All Time"; it is a solid bargain.
Groundbreaking.......2006-03-27
There IS a single reason to own this CD, and it is "Elementals". While the shorter works that precede it are enjoyable enough, some sound almost too "middle of the road" after all these years (although the airy, lilting, sometimes raspy performance of Paul Desmond never fails to entrance me).
"Elementals" boosts this CD to Five Stars due to its groundbreaking fusion of jazz and symphonic composition. Since first hearing this piece more than a quarter-century ago, I've stuck with my impression that Brubeck has fashioned a wonderfully mesmerizing history of humankind through music. The opening, almost primordial in nature, segues into a Biblical-sounding passage artfully played by 'King David', then slides into a musical evocation of the Middle Ages, whereupon both the tempo and counterpoint between the Quartet and the Eastman orchestra hasten. Moving into the just-completed century, there are strains of swing, beebop and what I'll call missile-age musical pyrotechnics. It all comes to one crashing denouement, leaving you to wonder, 'What's next for Man'?
If you gave me the choice of listening to "Take Five", "Blue Rondo" or "Elementals" just one more time, I'd hesitate ... then choose "Elementals". It's that powerful and intriguing.
STILL GREAT OVER TIME.......2006-01-12
I still own the original vinyl version of this album and must have played it 200 times over the last 4 decades. While there are lots of pops and scratches, the thing still sounds damn good. The CD version is first rate and has all the dynamics and nuances that make this my favorite Brubeck album. I own it for one reason, "Elementals." If memory service me, the Eastman Conservatory asked Brubeck to write and perform a piece with their orchestra in celebration. What ensues is a truely inspired performance by both the orhestra and quartet.
As a bonus, the CD contains a shorter version of the piece with just the quartet that precedes the fully orchestrated recording. You don't have to be a composition major to appreciate the structure that Brubeck created in this exercise in theme development and variation. I still hear things for the first time after all these years.
I wish '' TIME NEVER CHANGED''.......2004-09-02
This is another one of Dave Brubeck's time experiments of the 1960's.
Dave brubeck could never fit under any category of jazz ; he's a whole
category on his own .This album is really very good ; it swings at times
and it's very melodic at others showing Brubeck's classical influence specially in the last song '' elementals'' which sees the quartet supported by a full orchestra that swings so hard.
My favourite track is the opening one '' IBERIA'' it belongs to the dave brubeck series of masterpieces.I would recommend this album to any brubeck fan and i would suggest also to try '' BRANDENBURG GATE REVISITED'' or '' BOSSA NOVA USA'' ; '' TIME IN '' and '' THE DIALOGUES FOR JAZZ COMBO FROM THE BERNSTEIN PLAYS BRUBECK '' or the very rare ''JAZZ IMPRESSIONS OF THE USA ''

Great early Brubeck!.......2000-08-14
This is a compilation of two of Dave Brubeck's records (1955's "Brubeck Time" and 1954's "Jazz: Red Hot and Cool"). The only drawback of this album is that it has four songs from "Jazz: Red Hot and Cool": Sometimes I'm Happy, The Duke, Indiana, and Love Walked In. "Jazz Red Hot and Cool" is a wonderful live album which should be reissued ("Brubeck Time" is available on CD). You can get one side of the album "Jazz: Red Hot and Cool" by buying CD this while all except one of the second side of "Jazz: Red Hot and Cool's" tracks are available on a Japanese compilation. I love the combination of Paul Desmond's sax and Dave Brubeck's piano and the 1954 lineup of the quartet was the best Brubeck in my opinion. There is something warm and accessible about this album which I really like although I would be more satisfied (and more logical) if this disk were a reissue of "Jazz: Red Hot and Cool" with a few of the songs from "Brubeck Time." All in all the "Jazz: Red Hot and Cool" tracks make this worth the cost of admission even if you already own "Brubeck Time."

5 `ll Get You 7 ~11/4 & 13/8 To Boot!.......2007-06-23
I don't know if these are actual time signatures on this album, that's not really the point. What's significant to me is the vast variety Dave Brubeck brought into Jazz with his interest in non-standard (4/4) time.
The excellent liner notes, accompanied by several fine & rarely seen photos of Brubeck's Quartet will fill you in on all the details if you care. Personally I find all the minutia about these pieces quite interesting.
What sparks the interest though is the fine & unusual quality of the music. I was astonished when I learned in College that "Time Out" (NOT on this disc) was the first Jazz composition not in 4/4 time. I'd always thought Jazz was all about improv & stretching the limits, doing what wasn't expected, to literally "Jazz" the music. How then could it be in the vast catalogue of J Music no one had strayed outside the conventions of Standard Time??? It turns out 13/8 & 11/13 times are more then a little daunting to play.
But don't think for a minute that's what makes this music of interest. There's nothing lost if you don't know a Time Signature from a John Hancock. Every track Brubeck recorded on his Quintet of Time Change experiments is worth hearing, & all, including everything on "Time In Outer Space" is enjoyable as any Jazz ever to listen to repeatedly. In fact the music flows so effortlessly from Paul Desmond's Alto sax & Brubeck's piano, you may be excused for thinking this is merely background music rather then one of the pinnacles of 60's American Jazz. Certainly these guys play with a verve rarely equaled by players who wouldn't be regarded as the inventors of Modern Jazz (i.e.: Monk, Coltrane, Miles).
Paul Desmond on his own I've never found to be much of a player, I know lots of people would strongly disagree, & I certainly haven't heard much of his other recordings since they never captured my imagination. But in this Quartet setting he blows a solid line on every single track. I can only think there's something very special about the chemistry of the Brubeck Quartet.
If you like 50's & beyond Jazz at all you can't be disappointed by the "Time In Outer Space" recordings. Worth listening to time & again.
Outstanding CD, Why is this out of print?.......2005-04-14
This is a fine outing by the Brubeck Quartet. Why it is not in print is the big question. Not sure what Columbia/Sony is up to on this, but this album should be considered classic Brubeck along with "Time Out" and "Time Further Out". The quality is maintained through all these experiments with differing time signatures. Desmond is in pure form (When is he NOT?) here.
A masterpiece.
Great Underrated Brubeck Classic!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-05-16
It's a shame that this album didn't get the recognition it deserves. It's really a great album; better than some overrated classics like Dave Digs Disney, Jazz Impressions of Japan, and Bravo Brubeck. Anyway, the album has some classic SONGS like Eleven Four, Castilian Blues, and Waltz Limp, and some hot swingin tunes like Countdown, and Fast Life, and unique songs like Castilian Drums, and Why Phillis? Every track is a winner, and so is this album. ITs a shame, people don't think this album lives up to the fame it deserves!

Pianist Dave Brubeck and alto saxophonist Paul Desmond go together like peas and carrots; the two had a psychic musical understanding that conjured up its own universe when they played. The two improvised together as if playing a brilliant chess match. The music was as cerebral as it was modern when it was made in the early 1950s, its passion subsumed by its ineluctable logic. It's easy to see why the Brubeck/Desmond groups were so popular on college campuses at the time. "Trolley Song," which appears in both its rehearsal form and final version, offers a fly-on-the-wall illustration of the process that took place when these two musical intellects hooked up. --John Swenson
