This interesting new Fidelio--one of over a dozen available--has a couple of things going very much in its favor, and a couple against it, too. A great pro is the leadership of Daniel Barenboim, who wrings from the orchestra and chorus fabulous playing and singing; just on a symphonic level, this is worth hearing. Barenboim also paces the work sensibly--those who do not like huge, glacial performances of this opera (i.e., fans of the superb Klemperer or various Furtwängler readings) or the "new school" of Beethoven conducting that seems to prefer racing through his music (occasionally in Gardiner or Harnoncourt) will welcome the inner tension Barenboim deeply understands in the music as well as his sympathy for his singers. This set grew out of a live performance in which all dialogue was cut and replaced, at times, with a flashback narration by Leonore. Here we get only the music Beethoven composed with no dialogue at all; the text Leonore spoke is printed in the accompanying booklet. It's not enough--one misses some dialogue, however brief and abbreviated, between numbers. This seems like a set of highlights without any. The quality of the soloists varies: Soile Isokoski and Werner Güra make a nice pair of youngsters; René Pape's Rocco is exactly the right combination of toady and good guy and he sings gloriously, and Falk Struckmann draws Pizarro villainously and manages his way around the difficult music. Domingo's Florestan is handsomely sung--almost too Italianately beautiful at times--but well thought through, and if not quite on the Jon Vickers level, certainly not terribly far away. Waltraud Meier's career continues to astonish. This pushed-up mezzo with an ugly tone has intelligence and passion in her voice, but the sound is curdled. Doesn't anyone notice that she sings off key and harshly half the time? So, a mixed bag: Domingo and Barenboim fans will need this, but it's like getting only a part of Fidelio (Barenboim, by the way, begins the opera with the Leonore Overture No. 2; an appendix includes the other three overtures Beethoven wrote for this work), and Meier is outclassed by every other Leonore on CD. Why not go for the recent Halasz reading on Naxos? It's good, it's cheap, and there's just enough dialogue to keep the plot intelligible. --Robert Levine

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Change !.......2000-04-21

I have ignored all the warnings concerning this recording, and decided to buy it, only because i have much appreciation to Daniel Barenboim's musical taste, and to Waltraud Meier's singing. It is true, it isn't an ordinary Fidelio. The dialogues (which are quite boring anyhow) are missing, and the main singer (Leonore- sung here by Waltraud Meier) doesn't seem to fit to the role THEORETICALY. But thought it seems like a failure, the recording is simply outstanding. The singers reach new levels, Falk Struckmann's Pizaro is amazingly strong. Domingo's Florestan is a bit too soft, but that brings more beauty to the role. Waltraud Meier's Leonore, is amazingly inteligenty interpreted. Many reviewers say that Meier doesn't have the vocal capabilites to sing Loenore. Well, it isn't an ordinary leonore, and it certainly isn't very gentle. But it is amazingly strong, full of true emotions, and the singing is beautiful. I reject the reviews saying Meier is singing off key. Don't forget it is a studio recording, if something went wrong, you should rely on Daniel Barenboim as a conducter, and Waltraud Meier as one of today's greatest interpreters to fix it. I give this recording full 5 stars. I find it astonishingly good !

3 out of 5 stars Is this really Beethoven's "Fidelio"?.......2000-04-02

There are regrettably few excellent recordings of Beethoven's only opera--Bernstein's recording is almost comically misguided, Solti's conception was good but neither Behrens nor Hoffmann could live up to the demands he creates, Jessye Norman is a superb, dignified but largely ineffective Leonore thanks to the various failures of the other soloists on Haitink's reading (with the notable exception of Kurt Moll...where would German bass singing be now without Kurt Moll?). On this new set, Barenboim has an acceptable grasp on the score--one can only imagine what a Carlos Kleiber or Valery Gergiev could do with this score in the recording studio. Frankly, Placido Domingo continues to astound me. As Florestan, there are some small signs that the voice is aging, but the tone is still beautiful and in wonderfully pristine technical control. Bravo! Despite her decent contribution to Domingo's earlier "Samson et Dalila," Waltraud Meier here is imprecise and exasperating. It is a pity that a singer with such obviously prodigious dramatic intentions could not have been granted a voice of more appropriate proportions. "Abscheulicher" is a vocal grasp at a straw entirely out of her reach. The voice is coming apart at the seams. Only through Domingo's committment and dedication is the "namenlose Freude" duet saved. All in all, this is a set for every individual who feels that the most important contributions to "Fidelio" are those of Florestan. As Beethoven seemingly did not feel thus, perhaps this is best left to Domingo's already impressive discography of diverse roles.

4 out of 5 stars One of two new releases.......2000-02-23

Beethoven lovers take note: there are two new "Fidelio's" available, neither of which is perfect but both of which are quite good in their own ways.

The from Naxos (8.660070-71) follows the last revision and uses the "Fidelio" Overture, followed by the Gilbert & Sullivan-like duet. It also has just enough dialogue to let you follow the plot, provided you read German, since there is no English translation of the libretto. The offering from Teldec (3984-25249-2) uses the "Leonore No.2," followed by Marzelline's aria and then the duet. It omits the dialogue entirely, based as it is on a Chicago production that had the Leonore narrate the plot between her entrances. The booklet inconveniently supplies these notes in the introduction and not in the libretto, which is tri-lingual in case you need a French as well as an English translation of the German.

Each set has a good Florestan in Gosta Winbergh (Nax.) and Placido Domingo (Tel.). In general, the Naxos cast is lighter voiced with a good Leonore in Inga Nielsen and a more than adequate Pizzaro in Alan Titus. The only sour note is the terribly sounding Fernando (Wolfgang Glashof) who seems to have been given the part because someone owed it to him. And how good it is to hear the deep bass of Kurt Moll as Rocco.

The Telarc set has Domingo, I think, to thank for its existence, and he is splendid. The rest of the cast is fine, except--and this is fatal--for Waltraud Meier, who used to sing mezzo and does not seem up to the demands of the title role.

The Naxos set has the Hungarian Radio Chorus and Nicolaus Esterhazy Sinfonia under Michael Halasz in a nicely paced, (again) somewhat lightweight but very enjoyable rendering. On Telarc, we have the chorus of the Deutschen Staatsoper Berlin and the Staatskapelle Berlin under Daniel Barenboim, who plays as an appendix the other three overtures Beethoven wrote for the different versions of this work.

Which one to buy? Domingo fans will of course go for the Teldec.. Others might opt for the Naxos at about half the price. I plan to enjoy both.

        Product Description

The mighty dreadnoughts and battle cruisers of Kaiser Wilhelm II's navy sail again in this magnificent, first-ever compilation from Brandenburg Historica! This TWENTY-FIVE-TRACK CD presents the marches and songs of the golden age of German sea power, with PERIOD performances by illustrious units of the Imperial German Navy and leading military- and civilian ensembles of the German Empire. "Hoch Deutschlands Flotte!" features not only the most famous parade- and presentation marches from the core repertoire of the Kaiser s "High Seas Fleet", but also many forgotten treasures of nautically flavored German martial- and patriotic music. Included here are period pieces celebrating the First World War-era exploits of the SMS Emden, Otto Weddigen s U-9 and the raider SMS Moewe; a 1907 recording of the "Flag Parade" of the Imperial German Navy (complete with drill commands and including the "Hollaendischer Ehrenmarsch", which was designated as the presentation march for all naval units by Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1901); and a super-rare 1915 version of Hermann Loens battle song, "Wir fahren gegen Engelland", set to a score that has been completely overshadowed by Herms Niel's famous setting of that song from 1940. In addition to these rarities, the album features numerous German naval marches and concert band pieces of the Imperial era that are endowed with a distinctive maritime ambience, but are virtually unknown to today's listeners The performances assembled in this compilation were originally recorded between 1907 and 1917, and though the extremely rare early discs from which they have been transcribed date from the acoustic age of recording (that is, before the invention of electric microphones and pick-ups), they have been laboriously restored and reengineered to maximize the considerable fidelity already inherent to them without altering their historical authenticity in any way whatsoever. "Hoch Deutschlands Flotte!" is accompanied by a TWENTY-FOUR PAGE BOOKLET (lavishly illustrated with many rare, never-before published photographs) which features detailed historical notes on the development of the Imperial German Navy during the reign of Kaiser Wilhelm II, its musical traditions and the background of the featured musical selections.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable trip into history.......2007-07-03

This is a very creditable work that preserves music of a bygone era. Original recordings are used to give an exact reproduction of the sounds of military music of the Kaiser's navy. Particularly interesting was the track where the U-9 march went off into a verbal reenactment of the U-boat attack.

5 out of 5 stars It doesn' t come any better than this.......2007-06-26

The folks at Brandenburg Historica have done it again with Hoch Deutschlands Flotte. Twenty five (25) exceptionally re-mastered original 78 rmp recordings of navy marches, songs and other music, many by naval and seebattalion(marines)bands of the Kaiser's Navy. As with Brandenburg Historica's prior albums, the 19 pages of album notes and photographs are outstanding and second to none I have seen. It's a class act and does not get any better than this.

5 out of 5 stars Hoch Deutschlands Flotte, a musical journey in to the past .......2007-06-17

I just finished listening to this CD and it is a real gem. A rare look back at what the German navy was like in the Glory days of Kaiser Wilhelm's Germany. Any one that is a Military Music enthustiast and/or interested in the history of this time period should not pass up this treasure. All the selections on this CD are first rate.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars BEHOLD the Majesty and Brilliance of J.P. Sweelinck.......2006-07-11

After hearing Glenn Gould superbly interpret one of Sweelinck's fantasias on the piano I instantly had to get more Sweelinck. This Fantasy which introduced me to the Master must be one of the most magical and monumental Fantasias ever written. It is perhaps one of the most perfect examples of past medieval sounds, renaissance textures, combined with novel contrapuntal writing. In fact it perfectly looks foward to J.S Bach. I have made it a musical quest to discover and interpret some of Sweelinck's works on the modern piano. I enjoy much music, but Sweelinck, Bach, Bruckner, are the Composers I have dedicated most of my musical energies toward. I happily look foward to a lifetime of enjoyment, study and appreciation of the lives and works of these Masters.

As for the box set it excells in many respects, and the performers with the many euphonious sounding organs play suberbly throughout (this is highly virtuostic keyboard music). The sound quality is in no way lacking and the liner notes are highly informative and thorough.

If you are a lover of the Greatest in Musical Art then this collection will not disappoint.

This recording presents a "new edition" of Fidelio, one in which "there are countless differences in articulation, dynamics, timbre, orchestral scoring and even the actual notes." Indeed, some of the tempi are not what we're used to, and the wind parts are more prominent, but otherwise, it's impossible to tell the difference. The orchestra plays as smoothly as silk under Sir Simon Rattle, the chorus is glorious, and the smaller roles are beautifully taken: the Jaquino of Rainer Trost is youthful, eager and handsomely sung, while the imposing, simply beautiful Don Fernando of Thomas Quasthoff is a treat, and Juliane Banse's Marzelline is a real, flesh-and-blood character. The Rocco and Pizarro are good. But Jon Villars' Florestan, though well sung, is lightish and lacks pathos, and Angela Denoke's Leonore is, simply, poorly sung. Lovers of Beethoven's music should turn to the Otto Klemperer-led Christa Ludwig/Jon Vickers performance on EMI for a great Fidelio. --Robert Levine

4 out of 5 stars If singing comes first this isn't for you.......2006-11-23

The Rattle Fidelio is outstanding from an overall and an orchestral standpoint. Based on a new Barenreiter performing edition (although I'm not sure I could tell what differences are notational and what are performance-based), Sir Simon presents Beethoven's musical structure in an incredibly moving and dramatic way, and the Berlin Philharmonic shines. I find no fault with Sir Simon here. His grand pauses and tempi are unusual...but who says we have to hear this the same way all the time? The voices of Marzelline, Jaquino, Rocco, Pizarro, and Don Fernando (Quasthoff) are fine to excellent. The vocal leads, however, disappoint. Florestan (Villars) is clean but boring, unidiomatic, non-pathos-laden, and completely inadequate for the essential dramatic requirements of the role (Jon Vickers where are you?). Leonore (Denoke) is also less than optimal, especially in the "Abscheulicher!". With a better Florestan and a better Leonore this would have been a great recording. As it is, it is worth hearing. Whether you want to own it or not depends on how many Fidelios you want on your shelf. It's definitely not the one and only, and no recording of Fidelio that I know of even comes close to being that, but to the extent that singing matters (after all, this is an opera) there are better.

            3 out of 5 stars The emperor's new Fidelio.......2005-10-01

I admire Simon Rattle and was thrilled when he beat out Barenboim for leadership of the Berlin Phil. But except on rare occasoins, Rattle has never been a strong advocate of Beethoven--he went 20 years of prolific recording activity without making any Beethoven CDs, just as he recorded no Mozart or Brahms symphonies and precious little Haydn. Now he finds himself in the wrong territory fot that kind of holdout. Playing catch-up hasn't been easy.

This live Fidelio is a case in point. It would be automatically disqualified (except to slavishly devoted British critics) by the second-rate singing in every lead role, but especially the light-voiced and totally unidiomatic Leonora and Florestan. But even with better singers, Rattle can't find a style for Beethoven, other than to fuss over the line and push the pace. This great masterpiece demands a lot more--at this point Rattle doesn't have it to give.

5 out of 5 stars Disagree about Angela Denoke........2005-07-16

While generally agreeing with Mr. R. Levine's evaluation, I take strong exception to his comment on Angela Denoke.
She is a wonderful heroic soprano, perfect for the role. Her passionate, emotionally charged voice blends beautifully in the ensembles and shines in her great aria "Abscheulicher!" in the first act. In any case how could she have been chosen otherwise for the Salzburg Easter Festival by Sir Simon Rattle ?
(She also has spectacular looks, should a DVD ever be considered)
This is a great new set, conducted with inspiration and wonderfully recorded with rich well rounded sound. Highly recommended!
