Timeless Classic!.......2006-04-21
Personally I think this is by far the best in Lee Ritenour's "A Twist of ..." tribute series and above of all, one of the best in all contemporary jazz. Lee did it again teamed with all top-notch musicians - it will just never go wrong with Bob James, Peter White, Chris Botti, Gerald Albright, and Lee himself! All Motown songs just keep your spirit rolling with different flavors of arrangements and rhythms. It's relaxing, upbeat, and unquestionably a timeless classic! Wish I could put a 6-star there!
Excellent job Lee!
Get you moving classics!.......2004-05-02
I was looking for some up beat contemporary jazz to add to my collection. While overall, this CD was slightly more mellow than I expected, it definitely did not disappoint. I just LOVE the arrangement of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine". "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" and "You Haven't Done Nothin" are fast becoming favorites. Lee Ritenour and the gang have done a great job of jazzing up these old favorites, and still allowing the feel created by Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson and the others come through.
Add this CD to your collection, give it a spin, and feel the groove. It has definitely made the favorites list in my collection.
So good its bad , top musicians, good motown sound........2003-12-17
I think everyone is so tired of the rap crap out there that no one is paying attention to this masterpiece. However,if you have the courage to buy this cd you will never forget that you live in the most blessed and gifted country in the world. The best collection of music money can buy period.
Once again, a success!!.......2003-09-28
This cd is incredible!! Once again Lee Ritenour, has produced a successfull album in the "twist of" series! All of the songs are superb, and there's so much to observe in the texture of these arrangements.
It's hard for me to pick a favorite track because I love them all! The stand outs to me are "Inner City Blues" with George Benson, "Creepin" with Bob James, "All This Love" with Gerald Albright, "Heard It Through the Grapevine" with Dave Grusin, and the last song, "Got To Be There," with Peter White.
What makes this record stand out is the arrangements of each track. These artists put their heart and soul into each song, and it really pays off. Motown music has really stood the test of time, and I think it's wonderful that these various artists pay tribute to America's greatest treasures in music!
If you love motown music, or any type of music with good grooves, and soulful melodies and harmonies, this is a MUST!!

Beyond Brilliant!!!! Smooth Jazz Meets R & B!!!.......2006-05-30
One of the hottest collections I've ever heard! This is jazz meets R & B. Many of the contributing artists are among the top smooth jazz players of the decade. George Benson, Lee Ritenour and Gerald Albright on the opener of "Inner City Blues" smolder red hot!
Nobody has ever come close to matching the Temptations on "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone" like Lisa Fischer does. She is a soul diva! With her extensive vocal range, she can carry the lead of this song with the help of some very fine background singers to perfection. This tribute is over 6 minutes long. Accompanying Lisa is Chris Botti with his fine trumpet. In addition, Lisa lets all her passion loose on another over-6-minute song, the "Medley: War/What's Going On". Guaranteed, it will take the top of your head off! No wonder she won a Grammy in 1991! The import version has the alternate version of Lisa Fischer singing "Medley: War/What's Going On" which is listed as bonus track and is a rocking gospel anthem to end them all!
There are also mellow moments as well when Lee Ritenour and Dave Grusin play "Never Can Say Goodbye" and "I Heard It Through The Grapevine". Richard Elliot plays a searing sax with Ray Parker Jr. on guitar in the tribute to Stevie Wonder, "You Haven't Done Nothin". And another very fine Stevie Wonder tribute played by Bob James is "Creepin".
Every cut is sublime on this cd. If you love Motown as well as the finest smooth jazz artists that read like a who's who of talent, this one is highly recommended for you!
Someone please pinch me,i think iam in Heaven,WOW !!WOW!!.......2003-12-17
Ladies and gentlemen please please believe me when i tell you that this cd will send you straight to heaven...i have never heard music so glorious and heavenly in my life(40years).This is the way music should be played and all i can say iam blessed to be alive to enjoy this masterpiece. For those lucky few who have an audiophile system like mine with state of the art audio equipment lets all travel to audiophile heaven and enjoy.
Good Band Ensemble.......2003-10-22
This CD is one of my best BGM when I drive the car. These Motown songs played by Lee Ritenour refresh me. Compared with his previous work, his guitar's tone loses some deepness. But, I think this band's sounds don't need it. Many members back up Ritenour's guitar. Especially I like Steve Tavaglione's tone of EWI. His electrical sound is an accent of this album. Even if you don't know these original Motown songs, you will enjoy this CD.
