Review of Tracking.......2001-01-10
On Tracking Buffalo, The Big Wu blends clever rhymes with catchy melodies to create an extremely enjoyable CD. They easily differentiate themselves from and possibly supersede other small jam bands with their songwriting and playing ability. The lyrics sometimes have a ballsy triteness in their rhymes that is nothing less than hilarious. My favorite aspect of the CD is how diverse sounding the band is. The Big Wu shifts from G Love/Sublime sounding vocals to a String Cheese sounding acoustic guitar solo to a harmonious "Phil and Jerry" duet jam. The drummer controls the dynamic level quite well and never seems afraid to turn it up a notch when the music calls for it. He is one of the main reasons the jamming sections of the CD don't sound forced, but rather progress naturally. Highlights include Silcanturnitova, Precious Hands, and Red Sky. I strongly recommend this CD for anyone even remotely interested in this genre of music.
New, fresh sound.......2000-06-28
The Big Wu just flat out jams. I've seen them live, and they can play. The album provides a great outline through the different styles that they can mold together into a style all their own. The song Red Sky provides killer lyrics along with one hell of a jam. I would encourage everyone, especially those of you who are into jam bands to check out The Big Wu.
The Big Wuuuuuuu.......2000-03-22
Album of the year? By a mile. And this comes from a band who excels live. I can go days without listening to anything but Wu. Buy this album or miss out on something absolutely beautiful. See them live when they hit your town or state. See ya at the show.
Happy to be one of the gang.......2000-02-29
For those who depended on Wed. nights for survival this and any other recording by the Wu is a necessity. To the uninitiated, this will be a new treat for you. If you enjoy jam bands, positive messages, and music to dance to, help yourself to a big tasty helping of Wu. Each song on this album is strong, each melody is unique, nothing harsh or overdone. A real treat. I've had the pleasure of introducing many friends to my favorite band, and I invite you too, my friend. You won't be dissapointed. Sil CAN turnitover.
Big Wu, the review.......2000-01-20
I think I've played this album so much that my CD player melted through it. I can honestly say that it really is that good, and the odd thing is that the Big Wu have gotten even better since it was put out, considering that it hjas been a couple of years now. Definitley buy this one, and look for the new one, entitled "Folktales for the Bloodshot" coming out soon. I see it's on sale, don't pass it up when opportunity knocks. The sound is very ecclectic, mixing styles of rock, bluegrass, country, R+B,and anything else you can imagine with dueling guitar parts and sweet vocal harmonies. A real treat for any jam band fan, or rock and roll lover.

If Shiner and HUM had a love-child..........2007-04-05
Catchy, brilliant songs from beginning to end.
Just like other reviewers said, if you like HUM or Shiner, you'll love this album. It is apparently hard to find...which is a shame because I couldn't imagine going a day without listening to at least a couple of tracks. You can spend $35+ on the cd itself, or go to eMusic and download it. Get it!
Fill the gap HUM left in your life.......2003-11-25
This is a dangerous album for automobile operators. Just be warned: if you listen to this CD in the car, you're easily going to top off around 95mph and not even realize it. I thought I was going the speed limit when track 4 started, and I ended up actually traveling back in time.
Having said that, this is an excellent album. It can be repetitive at times, as they'll sometimes take a four measure phrase and play it for the first minute of the song, but the phrases they decide to repeat are almost uniformly brilliant.
Their sound isn't for everyone, but the band is so obscure that you're probably in good company if you made it this far. Fans of HUM in particular can find a lot to like here.
I was very disappointed when HUM stopped making new albums in the late nineties, so I've been looking for various substitutes to fill the HUM gap since then. This is the closest I've come to filling that void. Castor might even have more to offer than both Glifted and Centaur (Tim Lash and Matt Talbot's new bands, respectively) for the casual HUM seeker.
Comparisons aside, Tracking Sounds Alone has great merit all by itself, and it makes a perfect addition to anyone's Illinois-sound music library.
Listen to "Five Hours Later" for the greatest 25 second opener you're going to hear for the next ten years.
The nicer twin........2003-06-01
This release is pretty good. I bought this CD due to the fact that SHINER's ALLEN EPLEY appears on one of the tracks background vocaling. All and all a crisp, melodic, and original rock record with a mellow outlook. Some of the tunes really stand out with mood setting ability and some can be overlooked after a few listens, however, overall CASTOR's short run as a band was decent and this disc sits nicely in any good collection of alternative rock.
YOU NEED THIS CD TO GET THROUGH LIFE.......2001-12-17
Just buy this cd, and don't ask any questions.
You'll thank me.
This is by far one of the best cd's I own.
From start to finish its simply amazing.
Tempo changes galore, nice guitar work, and great vocals.
This Cd rules.

In this tale of a Special Forces officer pursuing one of his trainees running amok in the civilian world, William Friedkin tackles Hollywood's one-on-one chase genre with typical skill and style. But given the film's scope and built-in expectations, budding young composer Brian Tyler (The Children of Dune, Darkness Falls) was given the task of forging a near wall-to-wall soundscape of musical tension and suspense, a job that's produced veritable reams of McAction music cues in recent years. Tyler doesn't so much reinvent those cliches in his powerful, rhythmically charged work here as infuse them with some welcome new musical curiosity and intriguing flashes of orchestral color. One can sense the composer pushing his thematic constraints throughout; even his uses of electronic coloration have a fresh, edgy quality that further sets his work apart from the norm. If the composer and his co-orchestrators occasionally display their affection for Bernard Herrmann in their tense, timbre-expansive work here, it seems a welcome acceptance of the master's challenge to meet the constraints of genre with determined musical vision. --Jerry McCulley

highway 61 missing?!.......2007-06-05
why is nobody mentionign the fact that they left off johnny cash's cover of 'highway 61 revisited'? there's no reason why that song should be unavailable and they just ommited it from the soundtrack but they included 'the man comes around'. it makes no sense.
A thinking person's action score.......2006-06-28
This score is a bit left of center and it is awesome. The music is challenging but it is really satisfying. The complex string and percussion lines are something special to behold. Check it out if you are into modern orchestral music or intense scores.
A different type of action score........2003-09-02
In a time where the market is saturated with too many Media Ventures scores(they are fun to listen to)as well as imitators, it is good to hear something different. Brian's music reminds me of scoring efforts of James Newton Howard and Elliot Goldenthal. Solely because orchaestrator Robert Elhai worked with both of them. If you are too used to the highly stylized synth scores of the aforementioned Media Ventures, what you hear will probably sound underwhelming. However, The Hunted showcases the amazing amount of talent and consistancy that Brian Tyler possesses. It's only half an hour because of union restrictions but it's all you need. Brian's upcoming score to Timeline should be very exciting.

Average at best, hard to get into.......2003-05-07
This CD is OK, but I was expecting a lot more considering the nonstop pace of the movie. I'm a huge fan of this genre, particularly Zimmer, Mancina, Elfman, Horner, and Vangelis. I get a big rush out of the orchestrated movie tracks, especially the action oriented flicks. That's why I was a bit dissapointed with this work by Bryan Tyler.
The presentation (though not Brian Tyler's fault) feels rushed, like they had an intern put the cover insert together as an afterthought. Much more important, however, is what's in the 1's and 0's. It's hard not to compare this album to Hans Zimmer, particularly works like Peacemaker, Backdraft, & The Rock. But, ironically, if that's the case, then "The Hunted" doesn't even compare. It certainly has its moments, notably tracks 2, 4, 7, & 11, but not a lot else to make it stand out. This album has several heart-pumping action spots, with some quieter mystery & tension moments thrown in. All in all, there just isn't enough of it. The songs are all very short, as is the album itself. For me, these quick tracks would end just as I was getting into them, thereby inevitably letting me down too quickly. I think Mr Tyler has some good stuff going, but I'd like to see some extended songs that weave his work into a more fluid soundtrack. Granted, action movies are rarely fluid, so it would take a lot of extra work. Hans Zimmer's music is typically of the epic, powerful orchestrated type, using long sweeping songs based on an established theme of some kind, with a high production value as well. I'm certainly willing to try Brian Tyler's more aggressive yet less technical style, but in this case, it just felt too cold and distant for my tastes. In addition, don't waste your time if all you care about is Johnny Cash (though I do love his music), because this song is available on his most excellent latest CD, American IV: The Man Comes Around.
It's certainly not a bad CD, (I've heard worse), but I think it's of the bargain bin variety (sorry Amazon...). You might get a kick out of it, but this album won't likely get you hooked.

Great Pop.......2006-09-18
I agree with the other review. This is IMO exquisite pop that yeah does seem kinda like an upbeat Sam Phillips! Her voice floats around, drawls & caresses effectively and the accompaniment is always moving, shifting and cool-- but also accessible I think.
Bright-hued pop that isn't stupid, or weighed down with pretention either. A gem!
Why isn't the world listening to this woman????!!.......2005-11-16
Try to think of the times when a record just jumped out and grabbed you and simply would not let go. Kelley Ryan's (aka astropuppees) newest record is like that....and more. It's a happy record, in a time when happy and fun and easy aren't looked at as values. I'm not going to compare her to other singers*, because that'll not do 'Sugar Beat' justice. This record isn't slick, it's not forced or phony. Yeah, it's a 'girl' singer having fun, singing about fun, and guys and stuff. That can be a very wonderful thing.
* ok...maybe one....I haven't fallen so hard for a record since Sam Phillips' "Indescribable Wow" many years ago. I know I'm not throwing out a superstar, but if you ever loved that record, then just trust me now.

A great album.......2003-02-15
This cd was permanently in my car's cd player for the first several months I owned it and I still never get tired of it. It's just good music. It's got a great variety of catchy songs with enough words to sing along to and enough jamming to kick back to. If there's a low point, it's "pinnacle" but all the other songs are amazing.
A CULT CLASSIC.......2002-09-06
This was big wu's first album and definatly with out any doubt their best album. Tracking buffalo through the bathtub has fun songs like kangaroo ,which the band rewrote at bonnaroo music festival changing all the lyrics around, and using "bonnaroo" instead of "kangaroo." The best jam song on the album would be "red sky" ,which in the biginning starts off with a didgeridu and djembes having a world beat feel to it, then the electric guitar comes in and the chorus is very catchy. "Midnight Rudy" is another good electric jam and a very well written song. Also on the album is "boxing day", a beatiful acoustic song, and "Puerto Rico" another well written acoustic song. I'm sure this album will please a massive varity of music lovers. It's a well structured make you feel good kinda album.
A Mostly Good Effort.......2002-08-18
Overall, this CD is solid, with a few rough spots. It starts off with the energetic "Silcanturnitova" and the first five songs are all interesting and varied. After track 5, the excellent "Puerto Rico", the CD's first and biggest blemish comes up. "Pinnacle" has the feel of a song that was thrown together last minute to put a tenth song on the CD. It suffers from incredibly trite lyrics and a fairly uninteresting melody. "Gimme a Raise" has the same lyrical problems, but manages to make itself halfway decent via its rockin' bluesy feel.
This CD is worth the money, all in all, but has a couple of down spots. I find this to be a great road trip CD, which requires only the one press of the Skip button.
An incredibly diverse album by a great band.......2002-04-26
This is the best studio album by a great band: The Big Wu. The Big Wu are a jamband hailing from Minnesota with a wide variety of influences. I was first introduced to big wu when they opened for my favorite band jupiter coyote about a year ago and blew me away. As great as 'tracking buffalo' is, you really need to get to one of these guys shows! The album starts off upbeat with 'Silcaturnitover' which is reminiscent of the big bands of the early 20th century. Next is 'Kangaroo' another upbeat tune with a great opening guitar riff and a nice jam near the end. Next is the slower 'midnight rudy' followed by the bluegrassy stomp 'bloodhound'. Then comes 'Puerto Rico' a live favorite with a great jam. 'Pinnacle' is probably one of the weeker songs on the album, but still a good one. Gimme a Raise is a slower, bluesy tune that is one of the best on the album. 'Take the world by storm' is another slow blues jam. The final track 'red sky' is also (in my opinion) the best. by far the most "jammed out" of all the songs, it's also the jazziest and features the best playing on the album and feel good lyrics. This is a great album by an excellent but largely unnoticed band. It features bluegrass, blues, rock and jazz, with jamband-influenced guitar. If you like great feel good music, you should definately pick this one up.
Big Wu is Big Time.......2002-03-25
I was first introduced to the Wu through a DJ at the college radio station. From the first line of Silcanturnitova, I was hooked. The band and this album are just one of the all time great summer/driving bands. Precious Hands and lines from it have found their way into my daughter's lullaby's, Pinnacles run through my head while hiking, Kangaroo is now a battle cry floating the river, and Puerto Rico is a mainstay sinalong at drinking time. If you have never experienced The Big Wu, this, their first album , will hook you for good and not let you go. You'll be humming and singing the songs for days after you first hear them. I highly recommend these guys!!!

Customer Reviews:
Ten Great Car Tunes.......2001-11-12
You've gotta hear this one, and when you hear it, you've gotta have it. From the first engine-revving guitar riff, Jamie Rounds' "Ten Great Car Tunes" is great for the car, all right - you'll crank it up, sing along, drum on the steering wheel. And it's great anywhere else - at a party, on the dance floor, or any time you need to lift your spirits with fine rock n roll.
This album cooks, with an amazing range of styles from '60s classic rock to pop to folk-rock to Nashville. Rounds is a triple-threat singer-songwriter-guitarist, and he's so damn good at each, it's hard to say which comes out on top. His voice, always strong, is bright and tender with the first glimpse of a new face; soulful and ragged-edged when obsessive love has him in its grip. His falsetto will raise the hair on your neck, and he pulls off a pitch-perfect Beach Boys harmony (ably backed up, as on all the cuts, by Duane Jarvis).
As a songwriter, Rounds shines equally in lyrics and melody. He's a born rock poet, always finding that point where the personal meets the universal. And he's got the knack for taking a familiar phrase - "so long," "a little too soon to tell," "long shot" -- and conjuring up every possible fresh twist. Every word comes through nice and clear, and you'll find a lot of "yeah, that's right!" moments -- like in the first car tune, "So Long": "You can't whine when the siren finds you/you can't fake it when the fuel is gone/but you just might find if you limp it to the line/the line ain't so long, so long..."
In "Asleep and Awake," Rounds nails the fever of romantic fixation: "Bad guys win, good guys lose/I don't know the difference/the world could end on the 6 o'clock news/and I won't know the difference...I dream of you, asleep and awake/but I don't know the difference." And in "Tears Don't Care," he sings pointedly to a lover who'd earlier "set him free" -- and has just gotten a taste of her own medicine: "Round baby, round it goes in a circle/you see it on the young & the restless every day/somebody thinks they're the one/invented the game of hit and run/just to find that anybody can play."
A couple of instrumentals really showcase his guitar mastery (the second is a delightful homage to a '60s gem - if you were around back then, on the first few listens you'll probably expect it to be followed by the ominous opening strains of "White Rabbit"). But Rounds is more than an ace guitarist; he handles all the instruments here, except for Duane Jarvis' guitar assist on one cut, and Avery Augur's soulful banjo on another.
On your first listen, I defy you to play it just once. The first time I played it, I punched Play again twice and only stopped after the third time through because I HAD to go somewhere, and there's no CD player in my car!
Get "Ten Great Car Tunes" and look for more from Jamie Rounds. He's the real deal.
More, please!.......2001-09-28
Jamie Rounds is a remarkable musician. His "Ten Great Car Tunes" (nearly his alone, including instrumentals, lyrics, and vocals) gets better every time I listen to it. The lyrics range from fun to philosophical, and often catch you off guard with simple, disarming honesty. His melodies pull you in, follow you around throughout the day, and are beautifully enhanced by his harmonies. The variety too is impressive, from pop and rock and roll (to which you can't help but move) to sweet acoustic. And it is all powerfully supported by his skill with guitars (the CD includes two really fine instrumentals). I fully trust it will leave you, as it left me, hoping for much more music from this very talented man.
A Great Addition.......2001-06-16
Jamie Rounds' 10 Great Car Tunes is a terrific album, filled with some of my most favorite things - inherently hummable melodies, memorable lyrics and skillful guitar work. It twists and turns through a variety of musical styles from almost-country to good, old rock and roll, spiritedly displaying Rounds' versatility as writer, guitarist and vocalist. I've found a different 'Car Tune' running through my head every day since the album arrived. It would be a great addition to anyone's collection, but be prepared to sing along.
