Customer Reviews:
"trudi51" is sadly mistaken.......2007-06-14
"These Foolish Things" represents the more "pop" side of Bryan Ferry, and, if you read the liner closely enuf, you'll see that, it all but name, it is a Roxy Music album/cd, with all the "Stranded"/"Country Life"/"Siren" musicians featured (which means, thank goodness, none of "Eno's" foolishness). So "Trudi" didn't like "Hard Rain...?" Sorry, darlin', that is the absolute very best "Dylan Cover" I'VE ever heard. And Ferry's rendition of Leslie Gore's "It's My Party" is an absolute hoot, too. Really, the only drawback is Ferry's way-over-the-top "dramatic" rendition of the Stones "Sympathy For The Devil," but - hey - this is a collection of one man's favorite pop songs, and he does pull it off EVER-So-Well! Say it again: FIVE STARS!
Prime Ferry.......2006-04-28
Musically,1973 was a very good year for Bryan Ferry. That year saw the release of his debut solo album which happens to be one of his finest collection of cover songs if not the best and Roxy Music's "Stranded"-arguably their best album as well. Seemingly everything Bryan touched that year was golden. "Hard Rain" is wonderful with its orchestral flourishes, adding more color and textures to the already colorful lyrics of Bob Dylan. Some may think it's overdone but I love its new theatrics. The Stones' "Sympathy For The Devil" also gets a full blown orchestral treatment with Mr. Ferry indeed sounding quite devilish. Other highlights include his funny, high camp version of "It's My Party", the rousing versions of "Don't Ever Change", "Piece Of My Heart", Baby I Don't Care", "You Won't See Me", "I Love How You Love Me", and "Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever". The pathos displayed in songs like "River Of Salt", "Don't Worry Baby", "The Track Of My Tears" and the title song is absolutely riveting. Hearing these songs is almost like seeing them acted out because of Ferry's inherent theatricality. In addition to the songs themselves, the wonderful remastering of this CD makes it a neccessary one to own if you dig all things Bryan Ferry. Check It Out!
Just awful.......2004-01-30
I listened to about 3 seconds of "Hard Rain" and couldn't stop it fast enough. It's really, really awful.
Cover collection not "foolish" at all!.......2001-07-24
Every few years, Bryan Ferry releases an album of cover tunes - always arranged in his own, unique style. "These Foolish Things" was the first one. Every cut is a treat, from the slightly campy take on "It's My Party" to the very sexy "Piece of My Heart." There is something for everyone on this album ... ballads, rockers (Dylan's "Hard Rain's Gonna Fall"), and Ferry's trademark '30's dancehall style beautifully displayed on the title cut. Add this to your collection immediately!
Not in his best shape.......2001-05-22
I really Like Roxy Music, and I bought a couple of years ago a Box Set of Brian ferry's first three albums, This one I believe is unlike the other two, horrible I'm sorry If I offend the other people who wrote a review, but he misses in all the song to hit the right key in which to sing them, the only one that to me come's out right is his version of Elvis's Baby, I don't care, I mean Sympathy, and tracks are just awful, Piece of my heart, is very good until he hits the chorus, where he sings it so low that feels as if he was mumbling, I recommend all of his records but this one, sorry Bryan, but I humbly have to say that you didn't make it here

Customer Reviews:
Horrible remastering of dated operetta.......2004-02-26
This is as clear as mud - the songs are lovely and the singing is fine but the transfer from original discs is substandard. Also to note the libretto and dialogue (even for 1946) are the poorest ever recorded. Embarrassingly awful writing with putrid attempts to act - it was not a loss at all to have a lot of the recorded dialogue cut for the LP transfer.
For the record:
The LP eliminated:
3. Opening dialogue of FREDDY AND HIS FIDDLE
5. Opening dialogue and musical intro to STRANGE MUSIC
7. Entire cut except for final few words
9. Three minutes of opening dialogue
10. Two minutes of musical intro
Cuts 6 and 7, cuts 10 and 11 and cuts 13 and 14 were double bands recorded onto single sides of the 12 inch 78-rpms. Maximum time for a side of this size was 4 and one half minutes.
The score needs a modern studio reproduction sans dialogue. This CD is a very very poor incarnation of the original recording.
PLEASE wait for the Decca Broadway remaster!!.......2002-10-27
I want to strongly advise against anybody purchasing this shoddily mastered Box Office Recordings CD of "Song of Norway". The score is beautiful, but this CD makes all of the singing voices sound like mush! Decca Broadway (the REAL owners of the masters of the original recording) will be making a remastered CD of "Song of Norway" which is scheduled to be released in the fall of 2003. Please be patient and wait for the remaster. Don't even THINK about getting THIS CD!
Song of Norway needs to be redone on Broadway.......2000-01-20
What a beautiful score and magnificent singing. I've looked for a long time for this particular album and the remastered cd is as good as I remember the original and that is saying quite a lot. My particular cd seems to have a slight defect and I have informed amazon.com about that. But considering how reliable they have been in the past, I'm not concerned. If you liked the "Sound of Music" you should love this.
Historical, but so dated beautiful music.......1999-09-14
I would like to give this Musical five stars, for purpose and effort; but for that alone. In 1945 the concept was aesthetically and politically relevant;the music of Grieg wondrous and the lyrics, well, pretrty campy. The cast, excellent. This CD is worth having for its historical position in American Musical Theatre. But, it is so dated.Kitty Carlisle is a gem, and lucky to hear in prime voice but sadly, she is not Ira Petina. This is a a beautful, naive, "nation-at- war" amd "lets remember Norway" musical
A great cast album - A not-so-great transfer.......1998-07-07
Decca records recorded selections from the operetta SONG OF NORWAY in 1945 for release on six 12-inch 78 rpm discs. A 1949 LP reissue deleted sections of several numbers in order to fit the material on a single LP. This Cd transfer marks the first time the complete cast recording has been heard in 50 years.
This should be a welcome reissue, but the transfer was taken from well worn discs instead of the near-mint masters carefully tucked away in MCA's vaults. The result is a murky sounding CD that limits the high frequencies making it difficult to understand the lyrics.
The cast is first-rate - even Kitty Carlisle substituting for original stage star Irra Petina who was then under contract to Columbia records and not allowed to appear on Decca's set. Ms Carlisle sings and acts the part so well that one wonders why she was never given the opportunity to play the role on stage.
The musical - a not-very-factual retelling of the life of composer Edvard Grieg - is not a liklely candidate for revival today. Its a pity that MCA did no deem the show worthy of their own CD transfer which surely would have sounded much better than this.

A True Delight.......2007-05-04
A real joy, relaxing in English and German, ala Dietrich. Don't let the youthful cover picture dissuade your decision. Keller has style and emotion. Her later concert recordings are worth checking out as well.
A sentimental and charming caberet singer..........2000-05-24
Almost reminiscent of Marlene Dietrich, Miss Keller has an accent, which is rather charming when singing standards like "These Foolish Things," Definately a sophistocated and stylish singer, her art was it it's hieght during the art deco 30's era when these songs were recorded. Not for everybody but definately elegant.

Etta James, Ruth Brown, and Little Esther Phillips helped revolutionize American music with early-'50s rock & roll hits, but they grew up thinking of Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and Dinah Washington as the ultimate in singing. As they got older, James, Brown, and Phillips all recorded pop standards in the style of their original heroes, but James made the most convincing transition from sock-hop shouter to cabaret crooner, recording standards while still with Chess in the early '60s, and ultimately garnering a mid-'90s Grammy for her album of Holiday songs, Mystery Lady. James's early attempts at standards for Chess have now been gathered into an impressive CD anthology called These Foolish Things--The Classic Balladry of Etta James. The collection includes seven selections from the '62 album, Etta James Sings for Lovers, one number from the '71 album, Losers Weepers, plus six songs which have never appeared on an album before. James was only 24 when she cut the earliest tracks with producer Ralph Bass, and she plows through these romantic ballads with the same gospel-soul power which would soon turn songs such as "Tell Mama" and "I'd Rather Go Blind" into R&B classics. Highlights include the Lonnie Johnson hit "Tomorrow Night" and the Aaron Neville hit "Tell It Like It Is," which are transformed by the bluesy desperation of James's pleading. --Geoffrey Himes
Customer Reviews:
Etta--An Overlooked Diva.......2000-11-01
This gritty soul-filled woman can move me like no other R&B singer. Her version of the classic These Foolish Things scales the octaves like 'a fairground's painted swings/these foolish things/remind me of you'. A mix of Holiday and Fitzgerald, Etta takes us with her as she loses herself in the music. When she wails I just want to do the same. And that's her magic, she knows, God how she knows, how a woman feels. A great cd a great singer.
The cd you take with you to a desert island..........1999-07-07
If you can have but one blues cd...make it this one. Etta is at her very best in these recordings and brings a sweaty, kettle-about-to-boil-over passion reminiscent of Big Maybelle's Okey Sessions to these blues standards.
The greats of the past must be smiling down from blues heaven on this disc...it is perfection!
This is one of the best cd of Miss Etta James.......1999-06-18
The Classic Balladry Of Etta James. She sings with grace and class. She brings new meaning to the classic. The songs on this cd are a true testament of her singing ability. When Etta sings (You Cant Talk To A Fool) you can fell the pain in her voice with the hurt.Miss Etta James is one of the best singer of our times. And the last song on this cd (Hold Back the Tears) will move you .This is a hallmark of a great singer. This is a must have cd for all of Etta James fans.
