Album Description

First time on CD for this long-out-of-print title, a scintillating, characteristically fiery set from the Buddy Rich Big Band, recorded at Ronnie Scott's Soho club in 1980. Buddy Rich was to drums, what Hendrix was to electric guitar and Charlie Parker to saxophone. He remains the greatest of the great. The popularity of Buddy Rich spans the globe. Over the decades, his works have been issued everywhere and he toured vigorously in support of those releases. Buddy Rich completists alone will want this startling album. Fivefour. 2007.

3 out of 5 stars Tight.......2007-06-29

This is typical, amazing Buddy. I'm not convinced about his Funk/Rock playing but he is still brilliant.
The best part of this CD for me, is the "machine-like" tightness of the band playing "shot" note figures in the swing tunes. Unbelievable!!!

4 out of 5 stars MIserable title, magnificent disc.......2007-06-02

As R. Viehdorfer points out, this is not new. The release I refer to is titled Live at Ronnie Scott's and contains exactly the same charts in exactly the same order, with the same cover photo. The title trickery aside, it is a terrific album, full of the usual power and energy we expect from Rich's bands. This version of Good News also features solo and counterpoints between Rich and bass man Wayne Pedziwiatr, about 2 minutes of give and take leading up to a powerful wrap (including annoying Star Wars-like sound effects, the signs of the times, I guess). I imagine the new title release will be as popular as the last.

4 out of 5 stars Strange title but great tracks of .......2007-05-16

"First time on CD for this long-out-of-print title"... well, not exactly, as I have a copy of the U.S. release, arguably the original domestic CD release, in my hand as I write this. Recorded live in March 1980 at Ronnie Scott's and released in the U.S. by DRG Records years ago, this has indeed been long out-of-print and hard to find, so it's good to see this available once again. The biggest disappointment on the date is Saturday Night by Bob Mintzer, but he redeems himself with four (!) other arrangements, including an early version of Slow Funk and Good News, later released on the forgotten and gone-without-a-trace MCA album simply named Buddy Rich Band - produced, if memory serves, by Joel Dorn. Added bonus, for those of you who know who Ronnie Scott was, is his spoken introduction at the top, just like Rich In London. One last note: Grand Concourse, a Rich staple written by Bob Kaye, is sharp as a tack and arguably the best track on the date, taken at a (very) slightly slower tempo, with Buddy and Wayne Pedziwiatr on fender bass soloing briefly before leading the band out. Anyway, sound quality is good, Buddy sounds great, the band cooks, what else is there to say? If you don't have this get it before it too disappears.

5 out of 5 stars Burning for Buddy: What a testament!.......2007-03-03

Having experience in Rock drumming for a little over 10 years, studying Buddy and trying to learn anything remotely similar to his technique where jazz and swing is concerned was quite humbling and frustrating all at once. Hearing this album also showed me that while the great drummers of our age also don't match up to Buddy, they do an honorable job interpreting his music in their own unique way.

It takes quite the musician to not only play Jazz, but play good Jazz. Not only play good Jazz, but play good Jazz well. Buddy Rich was the consummate musician. Drummer's loved him, horn players loved him, singer's loved him, everyone loved him. This tribute album is a testament to the impact he has had on music and humanity. All of the drummers involved did an amazing job. The entire Band [from what I understand all but 2 members are Buddy's original band members] did an amazing job.

Every song is great and provides a wonderful listen both to the musician and casual music lover alike. God bless Neil Peart and everyone involved for putting this together. I love it!

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2006-11-10

Just great! The best drummer ever played by some of the greatest drummers actually! You just can't miss it...

4 out of 5 stars Burning for Buddy Vol. I.......2006-08-11

This is a great recording if you like bona-fide big band without the crackle of the 40's and 50's and also without the overprocessing so many newer recordings suffer from. I really enjoyed this!

5 out of 5 stars For Drummers and Others.......2006-08-03

You can come at this album from a number of possible directions: as a drummer wanting to sample the styles of some of the best in the business; as a rock or pop fan curious about big-band jazz; as a jazz fan curious as to how well rock drummers handle jazz arrangements; as a Buddy Rich fan, to see whether there's any drummer in either jazz or rock that is a threat to his exhalted position in the pantheon.

I don't know of any 2-CD set that will give you a more diverse sampling of who's who in both jazz and rock drumming. Most other samplers are of either rock or jazz drummers, and seldom is there any overlap. One thing you find, especially if you read the interviews, is that many rock drummers have been aware of jazz drumming, and of Buddy Rich in particular. His appeal transcends genre when drummers have been open-minded enough to look past the fact that he came from jazz.

For the rock fan unaware of big-band jazz, or who thought it was only nostalgic "wrinkle music," this album, put together by Rush drummer Neal Peart, will have to be a surprise. Granted, the kind of "edge" in the music of a dozen or so horns is different from the "edge" of loud electronic effects; but there is definitely all the edge you could want in the Buddy Rich band. Nor do the arrangements sound archaic or out of date.

The jazz lover who thought there was little real talent among rock drummers will be pleasantly surprised and enlightened also. Many of the arrangements in the Rich book were pretty demanding, but none of the rock drummers on this tribute seem to struggle at all. Some even show some real chops, and all are enjoyable to hear.

Now for the Buddy Rich fan. Of these, there is more than one kind. There are those who, while they love Rich's work, also love that of a number of other great drummers; and there are those who simply think no one can touch him in any aspect of drumming. It really depends what you look for in big-band drumming. Some truly great drummers do best with a smaller group or with a more sedate type of band. They simply do not provide the DRIVE that a hot jazz big band needs.

In this one aspect of drumming at least, Rich was without peer. Anyone who doubts this should take this two-volume set, and find the originals of the same tunes done by the band with Rich himself on drums. Play the cut (for example, "Dancing Man") from this tribute CD, then play the orginal with Rich on drums. Do this with each of the cuts on both, and see which you find more exciting to listen to.

Notice the little ways Rich adds to and embellishes what the band is doing. While most of the tribute drummers are very good, you hear things like where a tribute drummer may do a couple of rimshots for a signal kick, Rich will do a crisp, quick little roll INTO a rimshot. Either is acceptable, but the things Rich does are often less cliched and more technically demanding.

The Rich fanatic will find himself reassured that no one threatens Buddy's place in the pantheon. But the open-minded listener will also be introduced to some fine drumming talent he may not have been aware of, from both jazz and rock. The CD is a must, not only for drummers, but for anyone who enjoys good drumming and/or good contemporary big-band music.

4 out of 5 stars Channel One, Not so Suite [If ya know what I mean].......2007-03-03

I have both Vol. 1 & 2 and I must say they are fantastic and an excellent homage to the man, Buddy Rich. Volume 2 is a wonderful piece of work, save for track 13. I looked forward to hearing this piece remastered and polished with Buddy's original drum track and unfortunately for a tune that should have been the highlight of the volume set, it was completely butchered by ridiculous vocals. It really is that bad. There is nothing you can do but cringe as you try to enjoy this piece of work. I honestly do not know how it made it out of the studio. Someone, anyone could have saved the day and spoke against the tragedy that is track 13. You can rest assured Buddy would have gone on one of his tirades had he heard this cut of the song.

Don't let this stop you from buying the second edition to the set. If you have vol. 1, you need vol. 2. They are both excellent listens. At the end of the day I love the set. =] 4 Stars because of Track 13. Had it not been for the vocal it would have been 5 stars. Cheers!

4 out of 5 stars Burning for Buddy Vol.II.......2006-08-11

I enjoyed this CD quite a bit. If you are looking for good old fashioned big band with the benefit of being recorded in the 21st century, this is a great album! If you can only buy one of the two volumes get vol.I. But if you want some more modern tunes or can get both, buy this one. See my review of vol. I.

4 out of 5 stars Should have been a 2-CD set instead of separate albums.......2003-12-25

If you liked Vol. I, then Vol. II is a natural choice. It is an excellent album; however, I gave it only 4 stars because it is comprised of the overflow of recording sessions that wouldn't fit onto Vol. I. Obviously, the best songs were picked for the first volume, but don't let that hinder you from buying this one as well. It is still worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars A Teaching Tool.......2002-05-21

There seems to be a strong consensus that listeners should skip the over-dubbed "Channel One." Ditto, but the real clinker on this otherwise excellent CD is "Goodbye Yesterday," played by Simon Phillips. This was always one of my favorite Rich charts, one of many fine efforts by Don Piestrup in his book. I was enthused to see it included in Part II, especially since I had never heard him play it live in a dozen or so concerts. But I have to say that Simon Phillips' work left me speechless. He has absolutely NO CLUE! Just listen to Buddy's work on the "Mercy, Mercy" album and then follow up with this one. Was he kidding? Why would Neal Peart include this disastrous cut? We are not talking about the impossibility of playing up with The Master, here, but just complete misinterpretation.

This album is a great teaching tool. Novice drummers will learn much by listening to the original cuts, and then the new versions. Some very lame big band drumming can be contrasted with great work by Smitty Smith, Dave Weckle, and Joe Morello. Neal Peart clearly is the best of the rockers.

3 out of 5 stars Channel One Massacre.......1999-12-26

I don't even want to know what Buddy would say about this if he were alive (especially after reading about how... umm... "well" he treated his band as it was). They destroyed the piece by trying to fit vocals where they don't fit... it's like trying to put a square peg in a round hole. They replaced the beautiful, expressive sax solo with plastic, popish vocals. It's like replacing Coltrane with Kenny G. Another thing, in a tribute to Buddy one should never used the word SMASH to describe his playing. Buddy himself said he doesn't "smash" or "bang" the drums, he PLAYS them. Well, I guess after trashing this track so much, I should say something nice about it: the remaster makes the drum solo sound a lot clearer than it is on "Mercy...". This album could've been good, five stars maybe, but I don't remember anything except the time I spent rolling on the floor laughing and crying over Channel One Suite. I've heard some great songs done in "vocalese" before (Al Jarreau's version of "Spain", a version of Caravan... I don't remember the name of the group), but this piece really left me with a horrible aftertaste. Buy the album, but remember, TRACK THIRTEEN DOES NOT EXIST!

Album Description

Rich's second album, another live affair that swings hard from beginning to end. Newly remixed, it includes nine previously unissued tunes, doubling the amount of music. The band roars with the intensity of Rich's drums and young soloists Ernie Watts and Jay Corre.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A rich program by a rich-sounding band (not to mention a pretty good drummer)........2007-04-07

This album came out a year after I'd caught Rich with Sinatra, a period when, above all, the great drummer wasn't afraid to swing! Beginning in 1968 Rich, like so many other jazz musicians, practically became paranoid of the walking-bass 4/4 swing pattern that had served everyone from Basie to Charlie Parker to Bill Evans so well. A pulse as fundamental to life as a heart beating or a lung breathing was no longer sufficiently "emphatic" to be heard, or understood, by the '60s generation. Rich tried to "connect" with the Beatles-Stones audience by going to a quasi-rock repertory along with the addition of electric bass. Fortunately, this phase lasted for only several years, and by 1974 Rich was once again validating the swing tradition of Basie, Goodman, Dorsey and his own roots.

"Big Swing Face" captures the band at an optimal period, especially for listeners who don't require for every tune the double-eighth-note, on-the-beat, slam-bam feel of much rock-pop music. And a previous reviewer's point about Rich's later incorporation of electric bass is well taken. A recently released DVD video of the Rich band from the late '70s features an all-swing program but retains electric bass (even Dizzy Gillespie made exclusive use of the instrument for a while). The instrument, quite frankly, sounds loud but penetrating and out of balance with the rest of the band. The band may swing as much, but from a listener's perspective the sound is less buoyant, less integral with the overall sonic textures of the ensemble.

Fortunately, by the end of the '70s, the great bass debate was fait accompli: the acoustic instrument had proven its inherent worth and staying power--at least in the jazz idiom. It's refreshing, though, to hear a recording made before all the fuss interfered with simply enjoying the music. "Big Swing Face" is such a recording, boasting, moreover, a total of eighteen tunes (admittedly, a couple of them "period pieces," though Buddy's 12-year-old daughter's singing makes it easy to forgive one such instance), making it a great value and assured winner for any fan of Rich or just plain swinging, great big band jazz.

Finally, for an "on location" recording the audio is first rate--better, in fact, than many studio dates with the bonus of the electricity that only a responsive audience can bring.

5 out of 5 stars Buddy the Great.......2006-11-05

Excellent CD. If you're a BR fan then you'll love this CD.
Have fun with it.

5 out of 5 stars Great, clean sound.......2006-06-21

Some of the best big band music I've heard. The sound is clean and sharp, the improv is excellent, and (of course) the drumming is fantastic. I particularly like Norwegian Wood... listen for the trumpets at the top of the climax! Buddy Rich himself was apparently a mean old man, but his band made great music. A must have.

4 out of 5 stars Tight swinging Rich band.......2005-10-28

Big Swing Face shows the Buddy Rich band of the late 60s and it was a good one with Jay Corre, Ernie Watts, and Bobby Shew. It lacks the long Rich solos found on other albums. Bugle Call Rag features a longer solo and so does Apples but other than that it's Rich backing the band. Some songs sound dated like Wack Wack and Norwegian Wood. The Beat Goes On has Rich's daughter singing and it's not very good. Love For Sale is an oustanding piece as is Big Swing Face and Chicago. Many of the tunes were on The New One studio album of the same time which I prefer because it features more of Rich's playing. Not a bad album though at all and the band really swings.

4 out of 5 stars Impressive.......2005-01-08

You can play this album throughout several times and not remember one tune.

But what you will remember is the great sound from the band here and Buddy's banging, plus the fact it was done live which always helps.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Buddy Rich Albums Available!.......2007-03-09

If you are a Buddy Rich fan, even slightly, you NEED this CD! This is one of the BEST Buddy Rich Albums EVER put together! By the time your done listening to this CD, you'll swear you were in the room when they recorded it! It is Buddy at his best and a fantastic band to boot! Very, VERY entertaining! GREAT jazz! A MUST have! Although it will be twenty years in April since we lost Buddy, listen to this CD and you will say "LONG LIVE BUDDY RICH!"

5 out of 5 stars Are you a TRUE Buddy Rich Fan?.......2007-01-23

If you are a true Buddy Rich fan or even if you just appreciate how an fifteen piece band can play so intricately as to sound like they were all born together, then this is a must have collection of songs. The recording is excellent and the acoustics in the club (Ronnie Scott's jazz Club in London) are perfect for hearing all of the nuances of the band and, of course, Buddy's playing.

Buddy shines on every song and the charts are very complex and present a true picture of just how good the band really was. The solo by Buddy on Time Being is breath-taking in its complexity and precision. It is definitely one of the best solos that Buddy has ever put on record and I have heard them all.

Even jazz lovers who are not drummers, as I am, will enjoy this album primarily because the charts are very complex and utilize intertwining intricate intrstrumentation. The sound within the club makes you feel as though you are there listening to a true jazz band rather than sitting at a concert in an auditorium with all of the background echo.

If you are a TRUE Buddy Rich fan you have to have this CD! There is no question about it. Buddy is at his best here and so is the band.

4 out of 5 stars Best of the RCA recordings - 4.5 stars.......2006-12-13

This CD represents the U.S. release and is impressive, first for it's sound quality, a notch or two better than the RCA studio efforts and arguably a match for some (not all) of the Dick Bock-produced sessions on Pacific Jazz, and secondly for the charts, some of the most complex ever performed by any edition of a Buddy Rich Big Band (and that's saying something!). While not all of the charts are a blazing success, enough of them are that this CD is a must for any drummer's collection, and no big band collection would be complete without it (I find this recording to be of particular note because of the infamous Fibes snare drum being used throughout). In high regard is the opener, Dancing Men, along with the Gillespie/Lewis composition Two Bass Hit, taken at a tempo faster than any subsequent recording of the chart that I'm aware of. While the solo's by the leader are all noteworthy, I get my thrills listening to Buddy back the band, and am simply astonished at the 'duet' that he and his bass player perform on Dancing Men - truly a tour de force of drumming skill. The inclusion of Kathy Rich and friends in a vocal performance with the band is an interesting follow-up to her debut as a teenager, and the famous Buddy Rich Speaks is included here - I just wish there was more, hence my FOUR STAR+ review and rating. Superlatives aside, the guy was simply the best.

1 out of 5 stars Buddy Rich - "Rich in London".......2006-02-24

This cd comes from Buddy's regular visit to Ronnie Scott's club in London, I was there for two of the five nights he played and it was magical. I have the record (a double LP - cd's hadn't been invented at that time!)so I was a little disappointed that the cd did not have the same amount of music as the record. Having said that the selection on the cd still represents the best of what was played that week. Buddy (and the band) were 'on fire' and the results can be heard on this excellent recording. A must for Buddy fans!!

Buddy Rich was pumping new life into the big-band genre and enjoying a tremendous resurgence in popularity when he recorded this powerhouse group at Caesars Palace in 1968. It's a winning combination of enthusiastic young musicians, a few current pop tunes, exceptional veteran arrangers and soloists, and Rich himself, pressing the band to its limits with his volatile drumming. While it's the band itself that occupies center stage, there are also terrific individual efforts. Guitarist Walt Namuth emphasizes the funky dimension of "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" and "Ode to Billie Joe," while the veteran altoist Art Pepper brings soulful lyricism to the rich hues of "Alfie" and "Chelsea Bridge." Trumpeter Bill Pierce and tenorist Don Menza add several hard-swinging solos to the mix, pushed on by the powerful horn sections. From Bill Reddie's ambitious "Channel 1 Suite" to Henry Mancini's popular "Mr. Lucky," this is a great balance of big-band excitement and precision. --Adam Rains

5 out of 5 stars There is only one Buddy Rich!.......2007-01-10

If you are a drummer, you must have this old recording. Buddy Rich was the King of all the drummers and should be absorbed by every drummer. He may not have been the easiest to work for, (Just ask the multitude of bass players he fired) But couldn't be beat for his skills as a drummer. This is just one of the records you should have is you love big band or great drummers.

5 out of 5 stars RICH, MENZA AND ART PEPPER!!.......2006-12-06

This is a wonderful live Buddy Rich Big Band CD with great sound. Great individual solos- Buddy, Don Menza, and the great Art Pepper, who wasn't recording much at this period. Don Menza had to lend Art his alto when Art started with the band. Art didn't stay long but was always grateful to Buddy for all he did for him. As already mentioned,Channel 1 Suite is filled with excitement and something you should hear. If you love live big band and/or good live jazz, you can't go wrong.

5 out of 5 stars As For Buddy... MERCY, MERCY, MERCY!!!!!.......2006-11-16

Buddy Rich was, is and always will be the best drummer that ever lived or ever will live and trying to compare him with anyone else is a waste of time and this album further proves that point. Some of the songs on this album are dated, but "Channel One Suite" is pure, classic Buddy! Buy it. Listen to it. 'Nuff said.

5 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable.......2006-10-04

They say Rich always expected 120% from his band.

Rumor has it that Rich and the band had already played two shows at Caesars Palace that day, and he decided to record a third one for what would become the music presented here.

So he must of have gotten around 118% from the band, but I'm not complaining.

4 out of 5 stars Pick And Choose.......2005-08-20

this is the third part in a series of live buddy rich reissues. mercy, mercy was recorded at caesar's palace in 1968 and it features an incredibly swinging big band that cooks through a number of modern hits (1968 modern) and band member originals. track one, "mercy, mercy, mercy" should be instantly recognizable to dimitri from paris fans as he has sampled the opening drum riff. dig into this track as it's probably one of the better groovers that you'll hear any time soon. in addition to the great first track, check out the cuts "big mama cass", "acid truth", and the henry mancini track, "mr. lucky". they are all excellent. some of the others aren't up to par with those mentioned, but pick and choose. an odd note: track 12 features tony bennett on vocals, but there are only 11 tracks on the disc. a typo i suppose.

5 out of 5 stars Inspired musicianship!.......2004-11-22

I had heard La Barbera's work before -- he was the principal arranger for the Buddy Rich Band for over 15 years and contributed to arrangements by a host of other leaders such as Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, Mel Tormé, Harry James, Glenn Miller, and Doc Severinsen - but this is the first CD I've found under his own name. With kudos on the back of the CD from the likes of Elmer Bernstein (composer of the title track) and Horace Silver, I knew before listening that this recording would become a solid staple of my big band library... and it has lived up to that promise. Crisp, bright, and solid arrangements swing from the first cut. The tracks move from rich symphonic fullness to dynamic smaller ensembles - embracing a full palette of colors - and the musicianship is top flight with folks like Bill Cunliffe on Keyboards, Clay Jenkins on trumpet, Pat La Barbera and Bob Shepard on tenor, and Joe La Barbera on drums. Horace Silver wrote: "Good arrangements -- good band -- good performance." I couldn't agree more!

Album Description

The Best of Buddy Rich: The Pacific Jazz Years features 10 tracks culled from Rich's explosive years at Pacific Jazz. There are eight near-standards - including "Groovin' Hard," "Love for Sale," "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" and "Greensleeves" - as well as two previously unreleased cuts: a live version of "Apples" recorded at the Chez Club in LA and an alternate take of "Diabolus." Although the compilation isn't definitive, it remains a good sampling of a short period of Rich's long, prolific career.

5 out of 5 stars BUDDY RICH AND THE ONE HANDED PRESS ROLL.......2006-01-21

guy's the buddy rich albums shown here are very much worth owning I agree but I need to dispel rumours of a one handed press roll that is not what he is doing! a press roll is akin to a hold note or whole note that is not possible even if you are buddy rich!! what buddy is doing with his left hand is really a shuffle played with one hand, it is more a one handed ostinado pattern if you will, ostinado is a pattern played over and over again, I wanted to clarify this as there is already to much "mystery " surrounding this subject as it stands now with out calling it a one handed press roll

THANK YOU, KENNY ALDRICH

5 out of 5 stars PHENOMENAL EVERYTHING!!!.......2005-09-13

Unbelivable!!! buddy rich is the master when it comes to drumming!!! This CD is filled with many solos... not just from the master, but also from others in the band. he had by far the best horn section in the the world and it is definitely captured by this AWESOME cd. I find NO problems when it comes to sound or anything else. If you like jazz, druming, solos, or just buddy rich, you NEED to get this.

5 out of 5 stars Buddy is the man!.......2003-01-08

I've always been interested in good drumming. From metal drummers like Gene Hoglan and Dave Lombardo, to prog. drummers like Mike Portnoy and Neil Peart, I have always admired guys that did more than just keep time. However, it wasn't until I bought this album that I realized I had no idea what drumming really was. Buddy Rich was often referred to as "the world's greatest drummer", and that was certainly no exaggeration. I have never heard anyone, in any kind of music, play like this guy did (there are a few guys in death metal that can match him in speed alone, but that's it). Not only was he incredibly fast and intricate, but he could lay back and groove very well too. A lot of his music was merely a vehicle for showing off his incredible prowess, but he was a very dynamic drummer as well. He could do it all.

This collection is a great example of the diversity that could be found in his music throughout the course of his career. You've got straight-out swing tracks, like "Rotten Kid" and "Love for Sale", more laid-back Miles Davis-type songs like "Diabolus", and even some rock/fusion stuff, like "Chelsea Bridge" and "Mercy Mercy Mercy", which add piano and guitar to the traditional big-band lineup.

However, the stand-out tracks, for me, are definitely the two epics, "West Side Story" and "Channel One Suite". Both around 12 minutes, they feature multiple tempo changes, excellent work from the horn section (the latter has an incredible saxophone solo spot), and of course some unbelievable drum solos from Buddy.

Apparently, Buddy was more of a performer than a songwriter, as most of these songs were originally composed by someone else, but the way he makes them his own is quite amazing. The swing version of "Greensleeves" is a perfect example. The melody is played on horns, and Buddy works in another of his jaw-dropping solo spots, and it sounds as if he wrote it himself. Very cool indeed.

I highly recommend this album, not only to fans of jazz, but to everyone who appreciates excellent drumming. I'm generally not a huge fan of the swing-style jazz, I'm more into the modern fusion type stuff, but I still think this is a highly enjoyable album from start to finish.

4 out of 5 stars If you're only going to listen to one Buddy Rich album:.......2002-06-15

These tracks capture the early fire and excitement of the Rich band. His sidemen were OUTSTANDING players, and blended like no other big band. Menza's circular-breathing cadenza in Channel 1 is THE zenith for every reed player; Boice and Trimble are unequaled for range, clarity, and technical expertise; the trumpet section is tight, sharp, and clean WAY UP there. Yet, it's Buddy's percussion (not mere drumming) which is the catalyst! West Side and Channel 1 MUST be consumed by every drummer...the one-handed press rolls alone are a clinic!
A must for anyone thinking themselves a jazz listener.

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive Buddy Rich CD.......2002-02-05

This CD is the absolute best when it comes to Buddy Rich, and even jazz. It starts off with a ten-minute version of West Side Story, with a drum solo at the end. After that comes my favourite song on the CD, Love For Sale. If you have to listen to one BR song, listen to this. It starts off with hi-hat work, 4 minutes of ensembles and solos, and a 10-second blisteringly fast snare drum solo, unbelievably using single strokes. The song finishes with a huge ensemble, and then into a 21/2 minute long drum solo with occasional bursts of other instruments, a song called Apples. A Masterpiece, should be in any BR fan's, any drummer's or any jazz fan's collection. Amazing

5 out of 5 stars Great driving music!.......2005-11-30

I can totally understand why Buddy is in a race car on the cover... these tunes are awesome to drive to! I have always been intrigued by Buddy Rich, but I never took the plunge and bought something. I am really into King Crimson, and when I read that Tony Levin played bass on 'ROAR OF 74' I knew I had my gateway to Buddy Rich. The hard part now is deciding what my next Buddy CD will be! Check out the sound samples... they smoke!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Groovy.......2005-04-02

This is my 5th Buddy Rich CD...probably my favorite thus far. If there are any words I could use to compare this album to the others I've heard, I would use "thick" and "heavy". This album not only showcases Buddy's brilliant horn section recruits, but there are some groovy sounds emanated by the accompanied lead electric guitar (Joe Beck), organ (Buddy Budson), and added percussion (Sam Woodyard) to give it kind of a "Starsky & Hutch" classic 70's wa-wa sound. This ensemble infuses jazz with a rock/funk sound on several tracks (Kilimanjaro Cookout & Big Mac) but still swings harder and louder than anything else I've heard (Nuttville & Time Check). I bought this CD for the latter two tracks mentioned and worth more than what I paid for it alone. I don't have to say much about Buddy's playing because it's nothing short of stellar and I hope that most people understand that anything recorded of this drumming monster goes without saying. This is an essential CD for all Buddy Rich fanatics. Stop wasting time and just buy this album.

5 out of 5 stars Buddy Rich Rocks.......2005-01-22

"The Roar of '74" is Buddy Rich at his hardest -- a kind of big band jazz/rock fusion. Unlike many of Buddy's records this is a studio recording. This isolates the sounds of the individual instruments, particularly the drums, more than on the live records. Listen with headphones for an intense experience. Buddy absolutely COOKS.
