The Poll Winners trio was based on guitarist Barney Kessel, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Shelly Manne, who each managed to place first on his instrument in the 1956 Down Beat, Metronome, and Playboy readers' polls, a remarkable feat given the range from hardcore jazz fans to casual generalists who read the magazines. Kessel and Brown had worked together as two-thirds of the Oscar Peterson trio, and they had all played together on numerous recording sessions, but the open sound of the guitar-led trio was a special opportunity for Brown and Manne to share the foreground. Kessel was an outstanding soloist, capable of almost trumpetlike phrases delivered with rhythmic bite and flexibility--unusual in guitarists of the era. His clear, boppish lines intertwine neatly with Brown's loping pulse and Manne's lightly swinging drums, while Brown's solos are almost as dexterous as the guitarist's. It's low-key, melodic music, equally suited for casual and close listening. Stuart Broomer

Poll winners means perfection.......2004-08-04
These three guys were not lucky poll winners. They were winners because they were rightly the best in their instrument category but not only this. They taken together were a fantastic unit, with great musical ideas in the trio context. And they proved once more their abilities here, on this second album of the saga. I mean, these great can transform "volare" the italian popular little melody (that I'm sure noone would listen again) into an interesting and catching swinging little portrait. But for more serious efforts you simply have to listen to the masterful rendition of "The spring is here". A master in guitar trio playing. Wonderfully balanced. The opener "Be deedle dee do" is a blues instead, taken at medium tempo. Barney, a musician strongly rooted in blues, wrote the theme for this blues. "Angel eyes" has a splendid, touching intro by Barney's guitar.
The fact is that these guys really know how to play, in every sense. I'm not talking only about technical chops, they listen to each other, they know the meaning of the word "dynamic", they invent musical devices, interesting rhiytmical, melodical and harmonical situations, different in every tune. They have personality and they have chops and a personal recognizable sound. They deeply understand the tune's essence and arrange the parts to take the best out of the tune and out of the trio setting. Nothing here is out of place. Everything sounds perfect, everything is in place. Everything sound right, every note says something, every musical decision is right.
How do you spell perfection? Let's do it together c'mon, repeat with me P, O, L, L, - W, I, N, N, E, R, S. Ok.
The Winners Repeat as Champions.......2004-02-01
As I stated in my review of the self-titled "Poll Winners" debut, Guitarist Barney Kessel, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Shelly Manne were the people's choice on their instruments in the late 1950s. Since they had recorded together in the past (with a variety of frontmen), it was only natural that they try to reap the financial rewards of their popularity by forming the Poll Winners Trio. Their second album, "The Poll Winners Ride Again!," picks up where the first album left off -- a perfect blend of jazz ear-candy and passionate, professional playing. With the exception of Kessel's two original compositions, "Be Deedle Dee Do" and " Foreign Intrigue," this August 1958 session is an all standard affair, and they are all rendered beautifully, particularly the latin anthem "Volare" and "Surrey with the Fringe on Top." Simply put, the Poll Winners easily repeat as champions on "Ride Again!"

A winner album.......2004-08-03
I heard that Barney Kessel passed away last may. This is the right occasion to tribute his talent rewieving this album. 1959 was running when this album was released. Just two years were passed since the Jazz zenith, 1957, but the freshness was still there. At least in the hands of these three poll winners, Barney, Ray and Shelly for sure. What separate this guitar /doublebass/ drums trio from trios of the same category are two things. Fantasy and fun. Fantasy because these three giants approach every tune with a different mind, contributing with fresh harmonic, melodic and moreover rythmical ideas, so the tune still if it is a well known standard finds new life. Few guitar based trios have the ability to sound fresh and inventive. The guitar has some idiosyncrasis which make it difficult for the guitarist to be interesting as a band leader. Only few did it successfully, Montgomery, Kessel,.. very, very few. The second is fun. Jazz surely should be deep musically but it should be funny too. These guys never forget this rule. They create interest, they are always ironic, and more than anything else they don't ever forget to swing hard. A special mention should be done to Barney because he has in the trio format, the greatest weight to carry. I don't want to steal you the surprise of hearing for yourself what were able to create these guys, talking about the tunes contained here. It will be enough to say that these guys were winners, and rightly so.
The Three-Peat is a Bit of a Repeat.......2004-02-01
As the reviews below are not very helpful, I will try to contribute one that is. As I have indicated in my reviews of the first two Poll Winners CDs, Guitarist Barney Kessel, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Shelly Manne were the people's choice on their instruments in the late 1950s. Since they had recorded together in the past (with a variety of frontmen), it was only natural that they try to reap the financial rewards of their popularity by forming the Poll Winners Trio. Their third album, "Poll Winners Three!" recorded on November 2, 1959, is perfectly good but the formula of running through the standards of the day is getting a bit repetitive. The album's three originals, "Crisis," "The Little Rhumba," and "Minor Mystery" contributed by Kessel, Manne and Brown respectively, offer some differentiation, and the performances of "Soft Winds" and "Easy Living" are excellent, but the true spirit of these trio collaborations are best captured on the first two albums. "Three!" and "Exploring the Scene" are certainly less about cashing in than their 1975 reunion album "The Straight Ahead," but for my money I would start at "poll" position.
The best of the best.......2001-11-12
All of the pollwinners recordings are great, but this one really stands out. The tunes and the playing is so hip. Ray, Manne, and Kessel where really at their best.
Don't dare to miss it!!!.......2001-05-31
5 stars? 50 stars!! From the first note of the smooth "Soft winds" right to the end of the end of the grooving "I hear Music" you won't be able stop listening. What an album...

Great line-up, great music!.......2006-02-02
I have to admit I expected alot from this disc when a friend let me borrow it. I'm a big Adderley fan, and have tried to emulate Ray Brown in my own bass playing for years (without the success I had hoped for). But I never knew this CD existed, nor did I know that Wes ever played with these guys (all his early stuff knocks me out). I loved it from the first 30 seconds, even though Wes only comps on the first cut - I mean, why have him on a song if he's not going to solo, right?? However, I'd rather hear him comp than most people solo anyway...listen to the way he backs up Victor Feldman's piano solo. Of course, by the 2nd number, Wes is in full swing. Chock full of great tunes and inspired solos, you can't afford to pass on this CD. My personal favorite is Lolita (track 2), but that changes depending on which track I'm listening to at the moment. Feldman's vibe playing is spectacular, as well. You can't go wrong!
One of Cannonball's Top 3 Recordings.......2000-07-12
"Cannonball Adderley and the Poll Winners" is a welcome reissue by Capitol. This recording in my opinion ranks up there with the classics "Somethin' Else" and "Know What I Mean?" An all-star lineup of Wes Montgomery, Victor Feldman (alternating between piano and vibes), Ray Brown and Louis Hayes tackle six swinging tunes in winning fashion. The two best tracks are "Lolita," featuring terrific interplay between Wes' guitar and Feldman on vibes, and Feldman's "Azule Scrape" which'll get 'em dancin' in the aisles. The CD contains an alternate take of Bird's "Au Privave" that was not on the original LP. Fire off another winner for Cannonball!

Great guitar trio date.......2000-12-01
More great jazz from the same trio (Kessell, Brown and Manne) that gave us the outstanding "Poll Winners" recording. This disc has a more adventurous range of material compared to the original Poll Winners recording, including songs from Miles Davis and Bobby Timmons. I don't like it quite as much as the original, but it is a wonderful session, and worth having if you enjoyed the original.
