5 out of 5 stars The Lady...........2005-08-23

The debut of D.C. native, Nonchalant, has identified herself and her thoughts on the mainstream release, Until The Day. All with the exception of 3 of the thirteen were produced by newcomers B.L.A.K. Productions. Nonchalant lays out her feelings on "It's All Love", "Until The Day" and the spiritual "Thank You". She takes it to emcee / rappers with clean punches on "Crab Rappers". The down side to selling drugs was the subject on "5 O'Clock". Non explains what she's looking for in a man and relationships on the titles "Lookin' Good To Me" and "Mr. Good Stuff". The injustice system of the law for minorities on "Lights N' Sirens" was an experience that anyone could relate to. Nonchalant has a style all her own with clean fun and without negative connotations. You should "Have A Good Time" listening to this one in front of any age group.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful album!.......2004-03-28

Great rhythm, thought provoking lyrics...
It's more something you'd plug in while you're riding than dance to in the club.

5 out of 5 stars She's Tight.......2001-11-05

Yes another tight album from an DC artist. Even though this came out when I was in the 10th grade, I knew that it was real hip-hop. I wish she would stop doing radio and start producing some of these local rappers (like myself) I know she can reconize talent just because of this album. As soon as U hear the beat from "5 o'clock" Ur head stays nodding throughout the song & "Until the Day" is real smooth and chill type.

5 out of 5 stars Have A Good Time With Nonchalant.......2001-05-27

Nonchalant is one of the best singer in the Hip-Hop world and this album stands as a favorite. Her flow is catchy but not agressive, she's got a deep voice and her lyrics are wise. The entire album is good, from fun party tracks ("It's All Love) to darker ones ("Lookin' Good To Me", "Have A Good Time").The "Non Interlude" and the Outro are gorgeous. "Until The Day" is a must-have for any fan of impressive Hip-Hop (also check out the excellent"Take It There" featuring The Roots and Rampage available as a single).

4 out of 5 stars I'd Jam on It Even Now...........2001-03-13

....the reviewer from D.C. is right. I liked "5 O'clock.." when it was out because of the take no prisoners beat with that slightly dischordant bassline and the "outside on the corner " hook. But "Until the Day" with the Stevie sample and "Crab Rappers" are good, too.

Hi, I'm Matt. I'm not sure who is trying to get $40 for my CD, but I just wanted to leave a note here. While I enjoy the complement that my album is worth $40 to someone, I must add that I'm happy to supply anyone with a new copy for a more reasonable price. Just holler at me: matt@mattalber.com. I'm trying to make Los Angeles-sized rent payments now, so everybody wins. Except the guy who's trying to get $40 from you, I suppose. And to the buyer: if you're willing to pay that much for my album, I'd like to send you a free copy to give to a friend. many thanks, Matt

5 out of 5 stars An excellent, swinging CD with lots of variety and talent!.......2000-01-24

If you were a jazz flutist, how would you follow up a great instrumental recording debut? How about with a CD that showcases your talents as a lyricist? That is exactly what Jan Leder has done on her second release as a leader, intriguingly entitled Nonchalant. If Jan Leder's debut CD, Passage to Freedom, served as her recording debut as a jazz flutist and leader, her second CD, Nonchalant, it seems to me, is the unveiling of her overall musical voice. I'm always intrigued when an artist takes his or her art in a new direction. That Jan Leder has chosen to do this already on her second recording is impressive. The result is a great CD from beginning to end.

Leder opens Nonchalant with an absolutely exultant rendering of Stevie Wonder's tune Bird of Beauty. On this tune, Leder, guitarist Mark McCarron, and pianist Jon Davis all take flight, as percussionist Daniel Moreno (listen for the gong and the bells) subtly adds the perfect finishing touches. I think that if Stevie Wonder ever gets a chance to hear this, he will be very pleased!

But absolutely everyone on this CD is excellent, and vocalists Angela DeNiro, Mary Foster-Conklin and Cleve Douglass all deliver great performances. For me, it's the title track, Nonchalant, and the closing track, Conclusion Jump, both written by drummer Art Lillard and with lyrics by Leder that really steal the show. Both tunes really swing and Leder's engaging lyrics are delivered to toe-tapping perfection by the wonderful Manhattan Transfer-esque voice of Angela DeNiro and the consummately expressive, fully-of-moxy voice of Mary Foster-Conklin. Nonchalant is a radio hit waiting to happen: if you're anything like me, you'll be whistling and singing it after just one listen!

It seems to me that Leder's continuing avian theme (e.g. Bird of Beauty) is a metaphor for the spirit in which she plays. I am certain this is the reason I always find myself with a broad, subconscious smile on my face when I listen to it. My first reaction was to wish that Leder and her flute were even more prominent throughout the album, but now after many listens, I have to say that one of the most impressive things about Nonchalant is how effectively Jan Leder expresses her own wide-ranging musical voice, while at the same time showcasing her incredibly talented musical collaborators so well. That, in my opinion, is a leader - and this is one fantastic CD, which I give my most enthusiastic possible recommendation!

        Customer Reviews:

        3 out of 5 stars Gypsy Swing.......2003-03-13

It's hard to be original in a world of niche marketing. I have tremendous respect for musicians who take an idea and introduce it politely to a seemingly unrelated one. It's that imminent contradiction that makes the sound of the Harmonious Wail so interesting, and the design of their newest album, "Nonchalant," so intriguing.

The Harmonious Wail fashions itself a "gypsy swing" band. Their sound is a subtle blend of bluegrass and jazz given substance with a sly female vocal, mandolin, bass and guitar. The swinging tracks jump and the haunting acoustic melodies call forth an idea that is eastern European, but it's just great musicianship, these guys are from New England. The standards they utilize are the poetry of masters: Django Reinhardt, Jethro Burns, Stochelo Rosenberg, Fapy Lafertin, and Robin Nolan.

Lead vocalist Maggie Delaney-Potthoff is superb in instantly and smoothly presenting herself to the listener with such selections as "Perhaps" and "Cou Cou." As a singer, her voice is sensuous, and that is well evidenced in the track "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To." Tom Waselchuk and John Mesoloras are proficient in their abilities to provide a detailed acoustical web for Maggie to spin through, but really shine when the focus is delivered to the instruments themselves in such tracks as "Minor Swing, " or "Armondo's Rhumba."

The presentation of the material is polished and even original in its revelation of songs that might be touted as standards, even though they are viewed with a unique synergy of styles and ideas. This album is certainly not the province of new material. If anything, it lives on the corner of new or different ideas.
