Music that touches you really deep inside.......2004-08-05
I bought this CD as far back as in 1988 and since then I have had numerous late evening occations where I could listen, enjoy and almost feel the world slow down. It totally relaxes you, it practically gives your mind a new dimension - you just feel as good as you can get.
Scott Cossu is truly a master with his piano, but Eugene Friesen is on this album infact just as important with his cello. "Reunion" is the soul reason (and a good one) for me to buy his other albums.
impressive.......2003-10-23
This album was more relaxing than his previous album "Islands" It wasn't a muzak album it was relaxing piano all the way through and I liked that. I play this album when I'm getting ready for bed. It helps me sleep so much better at night. Scott is one of a kind. keep up the good work Scott.
Music that liberates the soul.......2003-07-23
Scott Cossu and Eugene Friesen collaborated on this magnificent, but sadly forgotten collection of instrumentals. Judging by the song titles and album sleeve, one may be tempted to call this music New Age, which would be a mistake. The music Friesen and Cossu erected is dream-like but concise; mysterious yet inviting. Although the album, like most other pieces of music, should be analyzed as a whole, special attention should be given to the elegant, inspiring "Shepherd's Song", which, queerly, was not included with Cossu's 1992 Windham Hill retrospective.

BUT, this is not the SACD..........2007-06-15
Just a warning, this item is NOT the SACD. There seems to be some confusion as the SACD is mentioned in the reviews. This is the standard (redbook) CD - Chesky JD51.
I'm In Jazz Heaven---But It's SO HOT!!!!.......2006-12-05
Wow! The first time I played this cd I couldn't believe my ears! What could possibly be better than bringing together jazz greats like McCoy Tyner, Joe Henderson, Ron Carter, and Al Foster? Now...add the production and engineering team listed on the liner notes. Wow!
"Recorda Me" is uptempo and smoldering, a perfect opener that grants each artist a solo in the spotlight. The intense energy and power of "What Is This Thing Called Love?" is over the top! "Beautiful Love" goes to many different places...highs, lows, upbeat, and then verrrry slow & cool. The finale is truly the coupe de gras!! Like the finest in life, "Home" is the ultimate on this cd!
Clearly the recording studio was on fire for this project! In addition, the quality of the recording sound is amazing! You feel as if you are right there leaning on McCoy's piano. This is for those who love innovative, spirited, and sophisticated jazz...and a must for any McCoy Tyner connoisseur! Enjoy, enjoy!
A Joe Henderson turned McCoy Tyner album with 1 masterpiece!.......2004-09-25
Joe Henderson signed with Verve right after this album was recorded, and released the album that became his major breakthrough "Lush Life". For contractual reasons this album was turned into a McCoy album after the recording, but is conceptually and in terms of repertoire much closer than "Lush Life" to what Joe Henderson would perform/sound like live. The 2 best tracks on the album, in my humble opinion, are Joe's stablemate and original "Recorda-Me", and especially "Ask Me Now" - a Monk composition that Joe had truly made his own. At this stage, 5-6 years after he started performing the tune (he first recorded it trio in 1985 w. Ron Carter & Al Foster on "State Of The Tenor" (Blue Note), and then later in 1987 in another live trio version w. Charlie Haden & Al Foster ("An Evening With Joe Henderson, Charlie Haden, Al Foster" Red Records). The version on this album is the more fully "matured" take, while perhaps not as packed with the drama of startling innovation as on the trio version from 1987. However, it is still a masterpiece, and a perfect introduction to one of the greatest musicians/improvisers/saxophonists that ever lived: Joe Henderson
The Best Sounding SACD yet!.......2001-03-29
Having owned the Chesky redbook CD of this outing for quite some time and having used it to audition high end stereo equipment for quite some time, I was anxious to hear the SACD version to see if indeed this is the digital medium of the here and now as well as the future. If this disc is any indication, it is. McCoy and company swing like never before. YOU ARE THERE! For the uninitiated to the music, it is acoustic, possibly hard bop jazz, at its best with a little show boating thrown in for good measure. There is some strange solo blowing on this disc but it has always served to check out the capability of any sound system worth it's salt. For the uninitiated to the medium, SACD is the next step in digital musical reproduction wrought by Sony/Phillips. It samples at 2.8 million times per second as opposed to the 44.1 thousand times per second of redbook cd. The long and the short of it is a closer approximation of the real event stored digitally. The long and short of the difference in sound is increased depth, 3D image, tonalities and presence. Done right like this disc, it is nothing short of miraculous. I have at least 20 SACD's now and play them on a SONY 777ES. This is the best sounding and most impressive of the lot even when compared to 2 discs done entirely form start to finish in the DSD digital domain. This is an old analog 2 track master converted to DSD and it wallops the pure DSD recordings just like good analog masters trounced DDD recordings. Maybe they will get pure DSD right some day. They never got DDD pure (redbook) digital right. If you only buy one SACD, and you have an SACD player (even though this is a hybrid disc that will play on any cd player)and you are a jazz fan, buy this disc.
A Desert Island Disc.......2000-11-09
This album is fantastic. A crystal clear recording (you can heard the pads on Joe Henderson's sax as they hit the body of the sax) coupled with wonderful musicianship. One of McCoy's finest albums. Definitely on my desert island disc list.

Customer Reviews:
The Best Small Group Jazz.......2004-02-01
This legendary and historic recording documents the 1963 reunion of one of the most famous groups in jazz history. Benny Goodman reassembled his ORIGINAL quartet from the 1930s (Benny-clarinet, Teddy Wilson-piano, Lionel Hampton-vibes, and Gene Krupa-drums)to record a relaxed and inspired album that has the feeling of a late-night jam session. All parties involved are giants of jazz and are widely acknowledged as most important figures on their respective instruments. Despite the huge stature of each of these musicians, they play with such dynamic interplay and cooperation that really helped to define small group jazz as we know it today. Benny is in his most inventive and swinging mood since his forties recordings and it is obvious that he is inspired by his old friends. Lionel Hampton shines here without displaying any showmanship or lack of taste. Teddy Wilson, the sophisticated gentleman of swing who never played a bad note, plays up to his usually high standard. But the most suprising and wonderful aspect of this album is the performance of Mr. Drums himself, Gene Krupa. Recorded at a period late in Krupa's career, this album stands out as his last great artistic achievement during a time when he was in generally failing health. Krupa displays amazing sense of time and taste as he swings like mad throughout the record. More importantly, he displays a sense of subtlety lacking in his earlier recordings. Thus, Krupa never sounded better. Lastly, the sound of this recording is outstanding, and these players' gifts can be appreciated more fully here than in their earlier, poorly-recorded works. For the definition of small-group jazz, look no further than this historic recording. A copy of this record should be placed in a time capsule so that in a thousand years people will be able to understand what "swing" is all about.
Benny's best playing ever!.......2003-02-21
Since the original release of this album in 1963 on vinyl these cuts have taken their place at the top of my list of Benny Goodman recordings! The recording is exciting with an intimate quality and the playing by this quartet has never, ever been better... a must!!

one of my favorite latin jazz CDs.......2005-01-13
Paquito D'Rivera, Arturo Sandoval, Giovanni Hidalgo, Mark Walkerr...and more...what more can you ask for
Friday Morning, Tanga, Reunion, and Body & Soul are the highlights of this CD...although all the tunes are great.
I'm absolutely in love with Friday Morning...
This is a great Latin jazz CD...a good representation of the genre. I'd say a classic of it.
But it.
spiritually fulfilling.......2004-09-23
This is the best $6.80 you'll ever spend in your life. Emotionally charged jazz at it's best. Impossible to sit still while listening. This is what happens when highly competent musicians play from their heart.
An album to fall in love with..........1999-08-13
This album is a great one! Musically beautiful, technically sublime, played and produced with great passion and care. And this version of 'Claudia' (Chucho Valdes), already a 5 stars-composition, is the best one I have heard.

Album Description
They say they started performing together in the womb, one snapping fingers and the other humming melodies. They both went on to PhD's, one in Physics and one in Math. But they couldn't stop playing music, even when they were separated by the Atlantic Ocean, one in New York and the other in Paris. If you don't believe in the twin bond, you'd have to rethink that after watching Francois Moutin and Louis Moutin perform together. A tighter and more amazing rhythm section cannot be found in the jazz world.
Customer Reviews:
Twins!!!.......2007-02-08
This entire album is so incredibly solid. Every note, every tap, every accentuation, not only fits, but fits perfectly. It's to the point where you would expect them to have done hundreds of different takes for each track, but having seen Francois live, I know that's just the way he plays. The bass lines are incredibly melodic, not only in his solos, but in all his walking lines and rhythmic hits. I would mention how tight the bass and piano are, but then I would have to mention how every component of the group is tight with another. The performance on this album is so melodically and rhythmically sound. I guess that's one of the benefits of having a rhythm section proficient in mathematics (Francois and Louis both studied Engineering, Math, and Physics, if you're not familiar with their backgrounds).
This album definitely has the elements of European jazz in it: a little more meticulous than soulful, acute determination, and an approach to polyphony reminiscent of classical compositions. But it is also immensely personal and rich with emotion. The dynamics are also extremely well placed and natural. The compositions, with the exception of Bird's Medley, were all composed by either Francois or Louis, and are both complex and wonderfully listenable.
If I had a top 15 or 20 list going, this album would definitely be somewhere on it. It has the complexity and creativity I long for, the melodies and rhythms I enjoy, the excellent performance and communication I admire, and the passion that I inspires me to strive to be a better musician. There are few albums that can mimic the live-like feel of seeing a performance in person, but I think this does it almost as effectively as can be done. I'll give it two thumbs up, but only because that's all I have.

okay album - but not Piazzolla.......2005-11-08
For this album (recorded in 1998, after Piazzolla's death), Gary Burton assembled a high quality line-up of tango musicians including three members of Piazzolla's quintet - Fernando Suarez Paz (violin), Hector Console (bass) and Horacio Malvacino (guitar). The results, sometimes intriguing, are not bad, but never as good as the man himself.
If you are looking for the Burton/Piazzolla album from 1995 it's called "New Tango"
Beautiful Music Beautifully Played.......2001-10-17
Astor Piazzolla - genius who transcended his Tango roots to create some of the most beautiful music of the 20th Century
Gary Burton - jazz innovator who brought his instrument - the vibes - to another level of virtuosity and nurtured some great musicians such as Pat Metheny.
Both undeniably great musical contributors but how do they work together?
Well, in a nutshell - Brilliantly! This release is testament to the shared sensibilities of Burton and Piazzolla. Before his death Piazzolla did work with Burton (hence the "Reunion" in the title) and it is clear that Burton understands the material well.
Speaking of material - many of Piazzollas best are included here and Burton and his team do them justice and then some. The vibes works surprisingly well for this material and full marks to Burton for his feel and overall musicianship in putting this music across with the delicacy and fire required - the darkness and light which is the essence of Piazzollas music.
Hugely recommended.
For the Love of Astor.......2000-12-06
I've owned this CD for several years now, but never gave it a serious listen until just the other day. What I heard astounded me! Gary Burton has not only assembled some of the finest tango musicians in Argentina to produce this CD with him, he has managed to select a playlist of some of what I consider to be Piazzolla's finest work: Tanguedia, Triunfal, Soledad, Revirado, Decarisimo, and Concierto Para Quinteto, among others. Many of the musicians have a long history working with one another and with Piazzolla, so every note seems to spring forth effortlessly. Though one does not often associate the vibes with tango, Burton manages to work them in unobtrusively and seem a natural part of the musical flow. His vibes shine especially on Biyuya, Caliente, Tanguedia, and Concierto Para Quinteto. On Soledad, the lead of the bandoneon is skillfully replaced by Burton's vibes. The CD is so good that it often seems like Piazzolla himself is performing. For the love of Astor, Burton's ensemble offers more than an hour of spectacular music. If you love Astor as well, it behooves you to add this CD to your collection.
