NOVA BOSSA NOVA is a potent mix of powerful American jazz horns driven by a hard core Brazilian rhythm section. A unique blend of two musical traditions. A sensual and sizzling septet with a new voice and a new vision.

Led by percussionist Guilherme Franco and bass-player Alberto Beserra, Nova Bossa Nova is an innovative ensemble whose breakthrough sound fuses the traditional Brazilian rhythm section with a hard-core jazz front line. Among the players recruited by Franco and Beserra to give voice to this unique musical blend are Claudio Roditi on trumpet, Bob Mintzer on tenor sax, Joe Ford on alto sax, Eddie Monteiro and his unique accordion/vocal style. The songs on Jazz Influence, the group's first album, trace their origins to a variety of different sources, from classic standards to walks in the park. Bassist Beserra explains:

"The Bird" is a song I did for my bird-I have a singing cockatoo who improvises a lot. He's like a son-he eats from my mouth. He loves Charlie Parker, so I decided to make this song for him.

"New Hope" was born one day when I was walking in the park-I'm trying, you know, to lose some weight. It was an inspiration. I was walking and the melody came into my mind. When I got back home I picked up my midi guitar and started writing the tune. I gave it a name, but I didn't really like it, so I crossed it out. It was Guilherme who named the song.

"Three Places" well that song, I guess, is about me. I live in Japan, I love the States, and I love my home country of Brazil too. That's my dilemma. Thinking where I'd like to spend the rest of my life, where I'd like to die.

"Jazz Influence" is a Carlos Lyra song from the bossa nova era , in Brazil. It is a standard, and a song which I've always liked. It is a very happy song, I think, alive, a very jazzy tune with a lot of syncopation.

The Jaquitiba is a big tree, a Brazilian tree. It was also a soap opera with an actress who was a very cute lady. I got inspired by that. It is a love song.

"Convite" which means "invitation," is a very beautiful ballad that Guilherme wrote. (Alto saxophonist) Joe Ford does a beautiful job playing here. My friend, the pianist Atsushi Inoue composed it.

"Children's Song" for his [Atsushi's] kids, as a kind of lullaby for them. He did the music and the arrangements. The tune is more arranged than the other songs on the album.

The beautiful "Sky and Sea" is by Johnny Alf, a very famous composer in Brazil, from the bossa nova era. It is very jazzy and fun to improvise to.

Guilherme called me and said, "We need one more song, you have to help me. I've made half a tune, and maybe you can finish it for me." He faxed me the music to Japan, and there I finished "Passaic Blues".

I can't count how many times I have listen to this cd since I purchased it in '95. When I am having a dinner party, or just cleaning up the house. it's one that is sure to be played. I definitely recommend this cd. It makes you feel really good inside. The music Chris Spheeris creates has a very sexy sound to it.

I first heard Chris Spheeris while in Las Vegas at the Luxor hotel in a gift shop. His music was play ing and it was beautiful. I asked the cashier what is that music playing and she showed me the CD which they were on sale there. I have loved it ever since and when other people hear it playing they have been enchanted with it also. The acoutics are fantastic.

This music is lush and layered. It has a delicate European flavor to it that is very palatable to the domestic tongue. There is something special about the combination of piano with acoustic guitar that's like peas and carrots. And, oh yes, it's the music that my wife and I fell in love to.

I love this CD! It is the first CD I have listened to by these artists, and now I am looking into their other works. The music on this CD is peaceful, envigorating, relaxing, and exciting- all at the same time. I enjoy listening to it both while doing something else or just listening! It's great new age music and has wonderful sound.

Musical hybrids are always a dicey venture, running the risk of the whole's being less than the sum of the parts. Discussing the incorporation of jazz in classical music (or vice versa) can involve a quagmire of definitions. Instead, it is best to judge the works individually on their musical merits. All those represented here succeed to a greater or lesser degree. This disc opens with Gershwin's Manhattan anthem, Rhapsody in Blue, among the first to mix the two genres and yet to be bettered for seamlessness. Conductor Bernstein's love and understanding of the jazz idiom imbues works by Milhaud (La Création du monde) and Copland ("Burlesque" from Music for the Theatre [sic]) with the requisite swing to make their jazz influences ring true. But it is composer Bernstein (Prelude, Fugue, and Riffs for Solo Clarinet and Jazz Ensemble, West Side Story) who blends the two genres into a brew that is less noble experiment and more ecstatic experience. This NPR compilation from Sony brings together some of Bernstein's jazziest recordings during his heyday with the NY Phil., including the best of his three versions of Milhaud's "Le Creation du Monde." LB was attached to this piece, but his late- Seventies reading on EMI has hardening of the arteries and his 1945 debut recording predates LP. Milhaud created a minor masterpiece of jazzy classicism in this work, and LB gives us a swinging take.

His own Prelude, Fugue, and Riff is just as good a piece, and here there's no hesitaiton in saying that Bernstein's reading, featuring the NY Phil's legendary first clarinetist Stanley Drucker, is definitive, as is his recording of Music for the Theater by his mentor, Aaron Copland. When I was a kid in the Fifties, all these pieces still had a lot of juice, and although the landscape has changed, for me they still do. The immortal chestnut on this CD is, of course, Rhapsody in Blue, tossed off by Tilson Thomas in the original jazz band orchestration and done faster than we generally hear the piece, thanks to the gimmick of having the ocmposer himself dubbed in as the soloist. It's a gimmich but fun for a listen or two. Gershwin rips through the Rhapsody in 13 min. flat--about 5 min. faster than normal--and MTT is hard-pressed to adjust to the composer's many sudden tempo changes.

This is really a very interesting disc. The selection of classical works with a jazz influence puts some great recordings on this disc, especially the jazzier and faster than normal recording of Rhapsody in Blue. While the disc is interesting, I don't thik it's one of those discs one can just listen to - some of the peices don't seem to lend themselves to that. Still, the liner notes are great, and the selection is really quite good.

This may be my favorite recording of Rhapsody in Blue ever!

I've looked all over for an album that met my requirements of bossanova, and when I first heard this I bought it. If you like bossanova at all, buy this and you won't be sorry, I promise.

        This group comes from the same genre of Soul to Soul, Brand new Heavies and Julia Dexter. The lead vocalist has a rich and beautiful voice. My favorite cut is, "For you I sing this song". It is one of the most romantic cuts on the album. Pick it up if you like low key, funky, garage type music. The sound engineering is excellent.

        I got turned onto this album about 2-3 years after it came out, and it shot right up to the top of my most-played list. Thirteen years later, it still gets regular rotation in my cd player and car. This album is stunningly good. If you like that British Soul/Acid Jazz vibe, this is the album for you. The album is excellent from start to finish. I wish I could pick a favorite song, but then I keep listing other favorites until I've listed every track on the album. The other two D'Influence Albums "Prayer 4 Unity" and "London" do not measure up to Good 4 We, although Prayer is much much better than London, which I thought was very weak. But please, if you don't already have this album, it is a must that you add it to your collection.

        1993 was a great year for music that most people never heard of. That year the Brand New Heavies, Young Disciples, and D'Influence had AMAZING albums. The latter two received very little popular success here in America which is terrible. If you can find Good 4 We, pick it up without hesitation. You will not be disappointed! I think it is a shame that we have to look to the UK to find bands that are keeping the Soul, Funk, R&B, Disco (Yeah, I said it!! Disco!) and Acid Jazz alive. This album has it all. I won't go into its details because it would take too long. Just do what you can to get this album!

        I first heard The Band way back in LA getting some pub by a local radio station there. It was love at first height. I own everything D-Influence made including D-Vas. They by far are my favorite group of all time. There was this other group called 52nd street that came before them that I still today can't seem to find their CD "children of the night" anywhere and its been almost 15 years but thats another story. I call myself D-Influence's biggest fan, I probably am but its nice to see The Bands has a bigtime following by people who know realsoul music.

        5 out of 5 stars One of Britains best Soul secrets........2004-04-03

        D-Influence followed in the wake of the UK Soul explosion fronted by Soul II Soul in the early 90's. The Young Disciples, The Brand New Heavies, Galliano, Jamiroquai and D-Influence all forged ahead and established an alternative to the cookie-cutter "New Jack Swing" that could not be escaped in the early 90's. Oddly enough and almost a decade later the "neo soul" movement is here. One listen to this album and you will see where many of the so called "neo -soul" school took their cue.
        The album is just classic. It has great songs, great string arrangements, great vocals and great instrumentation. Sarah Ann Webb's voice is similar to Sade's on this release. The first time I heard "Funny How Things Change" on the radio in '92 I thought it was Sade. There's great samples like the horns from Curtis Mayfield's "Eddie You Should Know Better" on "Sweetest Things". Drum rolls sampled from Parliament's "Do That Stuff". Even a Pac-Man video game sample is used as instrumentation on "Changes". There's a few downplayed hip hop samples dispersed throughout for texture. The instrumentals range from latin("Instantly") to dissected hip hop on ("The Classic")(beastie boys?).
        Good 4 We is an album that is subtle and powerful. The album is rooted in funk and the lyrics are sometimes double edged between the socio-political and romatic but always emotional. Some psychodelic hippie ethos informs their sound as well as knods to 70's inspired soul. Their stripped down sound would mature into stronger, more full bodied songs on their follow- up "Prayer 4 Unity in 1995.
        I have had this in my collection since '92 and never tired of it.
