Throughout her lengthy artistic career, pianist Martha Argerich has experienced many heights and depths: moments of "crisis" in which she hasn't always seemed prepared to offer the full extent of her artistic insights, but also many, many times when she has managed simultaneously to come into her own and to completely lose herself in music-making. Fortunately it's the latter snapshot of Argerich's career that this CD captures, drawing from two live recitals Argerich gave at Amsterdam's Concertgebouw in 1978 and 1979. They document the pianist's overwhelming gifts, with all the artistic characteristics that have made her so revered. The program is quite eclectic, with music from Prokofiev and Chopin--all familiar territory for Argerich, which she masters with arresting brilliance, extraordinary technical facility, and grandly sweeping gestures. A bit further afield on the program are such composers as Domenico Scarlatti and J.S. Bach. The latter might give one pause: Bach and Argerich? But in the slower movements of the C Minor Partita, it's astonishing to hear such uncommonly tender, feathery tones. In short, the music breathes. It's only too bad that in the faster movements of the Bach pieces Argerich resorts to her typically fiery, stormy attacks. --Teresa Pieschacón Raphael

5 out of 5 stars If you only get one Martha Argerich disc..........2007-04-30

If you only get one Martha Argerich disc, or if you're just begining to collect her music, this would be an excellent choice. She is in superb form here, playing to a large, very appreciative audience. Also she plays a huge variety here, ranging from Bach & Scarlatti, through Chopin, to semi-modern composers including Bartok, Prokofiev, and Ginastera.

This recording illustrates why Argerich is considered by many to be the greatest living pianist, (I also love Pollini). Her power, passion, full colored tone, and technical agility are unparalleled. While everything on this album is superb, my favorite is the Chopin Nocturne in C minor. It starts off very calm, but with just a hint of the turbulence to come. It becomes even more serine when suddenly the serenity is invaded by waves of dark turbulence. I've heard a few other versions of this work, but I've never heard the simultaneous range of emotions that Argerich achieves here, it's magical.

5 out of 5 stars DON'T YOU WISH YOU'D BEEN THERE?.......2006-08-31

Thrilling, exciting, sexy, passionate, fiery, volatile, demanding, challenging, surprising, charismatic, exquisitely beautiful. Are we talking about the pianist or the playing? Well, both, of course. This recital from the Concertgebouw in the late 70's (actually put together from two recitals) amply demonstrates why Martha Argerich is one of the great pianists of our time.

For a start, there is the breathtaking range of repertoire here - from Bach to Bartok and Prokofiev and on to her fellow-countryman, Ginastera. All of them played with an innate sense of the different styles and character demanded. But all of them challenging stale preconceptions, shedding new light on the composers and their music. Even the most familiar pieces come up as fresh as though newly minted. The Chopin items are just as fresh and exciting as anything here: the C Minor Nocturne is a wonder of colour and tints, the darkness of its central section starkly contrasted with the elegance and smoothness of its outer parts. Equally the motoric rhythms of the first movement of the Bartok Sonata and the last of the Prokofiev display enormous power and energy.

With her reluctance to play/record solo recitals any more, live documents such as these Concertgebouw programmes are invaluable. If you've a taste for invigorating, refreshing piano playing of the highest standards (both of technique and interpretation), don't hesitate.

4 out of 5 stars Argerich's strengths and weaknesses.......2005-11-11

This CD, with live recordings from 1978 and 1979, is a showcase of Martha Argerich's astounding gifts but also of some of her evident shortcomings. The former are a technique as brilliant as any to be found anywhere in the world today, a real interpretative temperament and a natural musical instinct which is amongst the most unique in the annals of piano playing. The latter, a tendency towards senselessly fast and forced playing which often leads to distorted renditions reminiscent of the worst moments of Simon Barere and Gyorgy Cziffra.

The Partita n. 2 is good, reasonably spacious and even luminous in places. It's non-authoritative Bach playing but all the better for it. The Bartok sonata is the highlight of the disc: its motoric drive is relentless, its percussiveness notable without being unpleasant, and the overall technical vigour quite remarkable. Prokofiev's Sonata n. 7, op. 83 - probably the most popular of the Russian master's nine - is also impressive, with some brilliant fingerwork in spite of some minor slips and exciting throughout, though the final allegro precipitato sounds hurried rather than potent. Argerich also shows the expected understanding of her compatriot Alberto Ginastera's Danzas Argentinas, which she dispatches with flair and elan.

The Chopin, however, is a totally different story, and a sad one at that. This Scherzo n. 3 is much inferior to Argerich's previous recordings of the piece - made in 1961 and 1965 - and easily her worst attempt. She entirely sacrifices the narrative aspect of the work to speed and feverishness. The result is a shapeless, amorphous performance, with many blurred and technically inaccurate moments, and a tone with is at times hard-edged and banged. I can't imagine Chopin wanting that (ironically enough, the notoriously fast-fingered Barere recorded this same scherzo in the 30's with restraint, good taste and a luminous quality of tone).

All in all, a valuable CD, not only for the instances of great piano playing but also for revealing Argerich's highs and lows as a performer.

4 out of 5 stars Great Chopin Nocturne.......2005-02-03

Sometimes, listening to Argerich can give one the impression that you are hearing THE way of playing a piece.
In this case, it happened with Chopin's beautiful nocturne, which i had already heard in various performances by other pianists (Rubinstein, Barenboim, etc)

I can't believe it's the same piece. In this recording, Argerich has managed to make this one explode like an atomic bomb, and leave me trembling.... Even in the slower parts the notes seem to flow like water... Simply wonderful.

The other works recorded are good, but the partita sounds better on DG's Studio recording, the Scherzo also sounds better on DG's Debut Recital... The Prokofiev sonata is included in this disc only, so if you want it, there you go...

Anyway, good cd, gret Nocturne, very good permormances all around.

The sound is a little crappy though, so it gets 4 stars instead of five. I really don't like EMI's live sound...

3 out of 5 stars Not Martha's Best.......2001-07-30

Being a Marth Argerich fan, i was disapointed with this CD. In the last movement of the Prokofiev, which is one of my favorite pieces of music, she loses control and the Great Finaly of the sonata is very sloppy. through out the CD backround noise is heard and for the encores i was amazed at how much whishpereing there was , even during her playing. i know thats something that she cannot help. overall her playing is much cleaner and neater on otherr CD's. i recommened her two Great Pianists of hte Twentieth Century CD's much more than this one. the First one has a much nicer recording of the Bach Partita.

Album Description

Well known and well respected rock keyboardists performing classical pieces is a multi-level challenge. It is of course a challenge to the players themselves to step beyond the commercially-imposed boundaries of their careers to produce a piece which will live forever in some recorded medium. It is a challenge to a record company which is counting on the talent of the artists to appeal to buyers as well as the loyalty and enthusiasm of the music lover to buy the recording once it goes into the marketplace.

But the challenge goes further. It goes out to the music consumer to stretch his/her own expectations of the artists as well as to step outside the comfort zone of the stylistic setting to which they have become accustomed. If you are a fan of a particular artist or artists on this CD, you will probably be hearing them in a musically unfamiliar context. If you are first and foremost a fan of classical music, you will be listening to artists who may not be familiar to you. New interpretations on familiar themes, new techniques applied to classic compositions. Everyone involved had to stretch. Stretching is good.

5 out of 5 stars Proghead's Dream CD.......2002-03-14

What could a Proghead want more than this? Emerson, Wakeman, Moraz together again for the first time.

The idea for this album is a good one. All those classical chops put to waste on rock albums can now show the deftness, taste, and ability to recreate Western Art classics. Some play it straight; Wakeman practically phones in his piece, others lay their hearts on the line: Patrick Moraz's reading of Chopin is world-class. The highlight of the album might be Brian Auger's jazzy rendition of Faure's Pavanne Op. 50.

4 out of 5 stars Each piece is a labor of devotion.......2001-08-25

I purchased this cd to hear Chuck Leavell's contribution and while his is quite good, you have got to hear Brian Augur's interpretation of a Faure composition. It's absolutely heart rendering! Patrick Moraz sounds great and Rick Wakeman delivers a stunning, surprisingly quiet and sensitive Beethoven contribution. I agree with a previous reviewer below that Keith Emerson sounds "exactly as you'd expect him to." The short biographies of the 12 contributors are excellent and impressive and the short contributor-penned project notes about why each selected the pieces is fascinating -- especially Moraz'. the biggest surprise to me is how can David Bryan play so wonderfully here and remain fulfilled professionally in Bon Jovi. The money, women or both must be fabulous.

5 out of 5 stars If You Are Into Piano ...........2000-08-19

If you are into piano (and why else would you be here?), you should own this CD. The performances range from the expected (Emerson plays the way you would expect Emerson to play) to the unexpected. Wakeman and Jordan Rudess take a serious (and well done) approach whereas Chuck Leavell (Rolling Stones,Eric Clapton ..) takes more "liberties". Chis Ingles' and David Bryan's classical training make them well suited for this collection. Heck, they are all great! Every time I listen to the CD I find something else to like about it (ok, so I'm a little late discovering this one)....

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE.......1999-08-28

THE QUALITY OF THE SOUND OF THE PIANOS REFLECTS THE QUALITY OF THE MUSICIANS. IT'S ALWAYS AN EFFORT TO LISTEN TO PIANO MUSIC BECAUSE THE RECORDINGS ARE SO POOR. THIS STANDS OUT. THE SOUND IS BRIGHT AND TRUTHFUL. BEAUTIFUL INTERPRETATIONS OF THE MASTERS BY MASTERS( OF COURSE........WE ALL KNEW THEY WERE!). A MUST FOR PIANO LOVERS.

Carter Brey, who recently tied himself down to the position of principal cellist of the New York Philharmonic, has put together a most entertaining collection of Latin American music (including some excerpts from Milhaud's Saudades do Brasil). The most substantial pieces are Ginastera's Pampeana No. 2 and Cello Sonata, both wonderful. But they don't overshadow some excellent arrangements of Piazzolla tangos, which are fine music too. With prize-winning pianist Christopher O'Riley, Brey turns in scintillating performances of all this music, giving us a collection that is as stimulating as it is entertaining. The recording is fine, the price reasonable. --Leslie Gerber

5 out of 5 stars A classic version of Piazzolla's Le Grand Tango.......2000-06-21

Piazzolla's Le Grand Tango, which gives its name to the album, was one of his masterpieces. It has now been recorded more than half a dozen times. Easily the best are the Brey-O'Riley version heard on this record, and the performance recorded by Rostropovich (to whom the work was dedicated). Carter Brey and Christoper O'Riley really capture the essence of this piece. A superb performance.

    5 out of 5 stars COMPLETE.......2007-07-08

Ginastera died in 1983, but it seems to have taken until 2006 to record his piano and organ works in their entirety. I say cautiously `seems' because I am still trying to understand what Fernando Viani tells us about the various `children's pieces' here in his liner-note. I read therein `His Argentinian Dances...remained unfinished, with just sketches of a Moderato and a Paisaje. The 1934...Children's Pieces...[remain] unpublished, while the 1942 suite makes direct allusions to Argentine dances...' Disregarding the breathtaking swerve away from the topic in that third case, I don't know what to make of the past tense applied to the Dances. There are a Moderato and a Paisaje here, and they don't sound like just sketches to me, so did Ginastera finish them later, or did someone else finish them, or are they actually incomplete to this day?

One way or another, the Moderato and the Paisaje, together with the Variations and Toccata on Aurora Lucis Rutilat for organ, are receiving their `world premiere recordings' here, and very welcome they are. Ginastera has found a very able, sympathetic and understanding advocate in Fernando Viani, whose approach to the music seems to me more or less ideally judged from beginning to end. Ginastera's piano style has moments of inwardness and delicacy certainly, but for the most part tempi are fast. The fast pieces call for a virtuoso technique certainly, but one of a specialised kind. The focus is strongly on dance-rhythms, and the player has to be a virtuoso with big stomping chords - rapid passage-work, scales, thirds, double trills and the rest of the normal panoply of 19th-century transcendental execution are hardly called for at all. What would kill music like this stone-dead would be any sense of inhibition, and Viani gives it with the sense of abandon that is possible only with as big a technique as he has. This amount of swing and verve in the rhythm comes from absolute assurance with the great fistfuls of notes, and he is able to keep the texture clear and the sound free from any suspicion of ugliness while giving the frequent fortissimo effects in the deep bass all the power and volume they need. The quieter episodes are well done nevertheless, and there is some pleasant filigree work in the `scorrevole' section of the slow movement in the second sonata.

The pieces allegedly for children must have been intended for child prodigies, I'd say, because they are difficult in their own right. Viani quotes the composer's own commentary on the second and third sonatas, but I find that composers tend not to be very enlightening when they talk about their own music. Ginastera's remarks remind me of, say, Alan Rawsthorne's - informative up to a point regarding the influences on the style, but otherwise not telling us much that we can't hear for ourselves. Viani himself in his commentary on the other pieces has a certain amount to say about `synthesising a very personal and a universal message', which is the kind of chatter that means nothing to me. That, together with such concepts as `subjective Americanism' and `American neo-expressionism' may be stylistic features that I shall appreciate better in the fullness of time, but what really strikes me about Ginastera's style is that it didn't seem to change much, whatever he and Viani may say. I like it the way I find it, but it may be some time before I fully appreciate exactly how the second sonata `is without doubt one of the most significant and creative pieces ever written for the piano'. It suits me the way it is, and never mind that sort of hype.

The complete organ works come to a grand total of two. The organ sounds to be quite a big one, but Viani seems perfectly at home with it, and his playing has much the same grandiose characteristics as he displays at the piano. The sound of the instrument has been caught and reproduced without strain and without assaulting the ears, and that gives me my cue to compliment the recording engineers also on the fine job they have done with reproducing the powerful piano effects without a hint either of distortion or of artificial restraint.

And once again my closing refrain - Well done Naxos. I never tire of saying it.

Portugheis plays slower than the competition. The musical substance doesn't suffer from this, however, because of the excellent, full bodied ASV recording.Ginastera's piano music represents more than a vehicle for virtuosic display of gaucho rhythms. For this reason, I find very fast tempi(Santiago Rodriguez)less idiomatic. With the addition of the Cello sonata and the Pampeana no.2 this disc offers two gems of modern chamber music, that you certainly do not want to miss. Gorgeous cello sound and playing ! If you hesitate about this disc, buy it for these two chamber music pieces.

    1 out of 5 stars Yawn.......2003-11-08

This Cd put me right to sleep. The pianst plays this weird rythym where he speeds up in some places and slows down in others irratically. The pianst for this album must have had trouble reading the music, because there aren't supposed to be any rests in random places. This is a fast dancing piece, hence the title: Danzas Argentinas! If you want a vison for this album, imagine a sprinter running the 400 meter dash. Suddenly the sprinter stops and walks a few paces. And then he speeds back up again, only to stop to tie his shoe. And so on. I would highly recommend another CD. Dude, Martha Argerich has an interpertation that will knock your socks off. Wahhhh!

2 out of 5 stars I agree with the other reviewers!.......2002-07-30

I bought this album along with volume 2, and I have to agree with the other reviewers that it is a pretty disappointing album. I became interested in Ginastera's piano music when I heard GREAT recordings of the piano sonata no. 1 and the argentine dances. Not being a pianist myself, I still manage to notice the defectiveness in the music, mainly that it lacks the rhythmic vitality and speed that I believe the music requires to be exciting. However, I do think some of the recordings are not bad, such as the pequena danza and the american preludes. Overall, however, this isn't a great disc to buy of Ginastera. That is not to say that Portugheis is a bad pianist, I'm sure he does great with other music, just not this!

1 out of 5 stars Lacks energy and rhythm.......1999-11-20

I bought this CD mostly because I wanted a good recording of the first Piano Sonata. I was disappointed. Portugheis seems to have misunderstood what Ginastera's music is all about-rhythmic vitality. In most of Ginastera's music, rhythmic drive is of primary importance and pitch (though still important) is secondary. Portugheis romanticizes the heck out of it. Often, the rhythms he plays are the result of technical (as opposed to musical) rubato, i.e. he doesn't have the technical command to play the damn thing. He stumbles through almost the entire piece. He turns 5/8 measures in 6/8's. A strict tempo rarely exists for long. When the rhythmic vitality is lost, the energy of the piece goes down the drain. If you want to hear a guy play Ginastera well, Santiago Rodriguez is your man. His level of energy will blow you away.

Recorded August 19th, 2000 at the Téatro Colon in Buenos Aires, Daniel Barenboim's recital commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of his debut (at age seven) yields uneven results. In Beethoven's "Appassionata" Sonata, for instance, the pianist is below his best form. In contrast to his more controlled (and better engineered) DG recording, Barenboim forgoes the finale's essential repeat, and pounds his way through the coda with no pretense to subtlety. He swoons over Scarlatti's D Minor "Pastorale" sonata, and lays heavily into the C Major (K. 159) Sonata's dancing patterns. Mozart's K. 330 Sonata in the same key comes alive through Barenboim's witty, incisive way with the Finale. Following an iron-bound, charmless Schubert F Minor Moment musical, Barenboim positively sings out Schumann's Des Abends and the Chopin F Minor Etude and D-flat Nocturne. The Resta, Ginastera, and Villa-Lobos encores are played to the hilt, with all the idiomatic élan they deserve. --Jed Distler

    5 out of 5 stars A luminous recital.......2006-11-05

Barenboim never forgets his birth land. From time to time, he returns to give the best of his interpretative skills, but the big difference between and the rest of the keyboard players resides in his astonishing vision and well thought approach around the single or elemental piano work

Daniel illuminates the score due his directorial conception around the work; and as well as Ashkenazy, Perahia, Badura Skoda or Edwin Fisher this double vision nourishes and enriches the composition to play.

So, this is a very recommendable album to acquire. Barenboim in the peak of his powers giving the best of his craftsmanship.

I purchased this CD because I was working on the Suite de Danzas Criollas. Unfortunately, the playing here lacks any kind of energy, especially rhythmic vitality. Also, the movements are marked "attacca," but there are HUGE gaps between tracks.
