About the Artist
The John Funkhouser Trio recently completed a national tour, thrilling audiences in eleven major cities including Chicago, Washington DC, and Kansas City. Critics and fellow musicians have also been impressed. In the words of pianist Kenny Werner, the band is "definitely on to something special." The trio consists of acoustic piano, acoustic bass and drums. Their music is all original and blends modern jazz, funk, Balkan and American folk music, and blues. Listeners may also recognize the influences of Medeski, Martin and Wood, Ornette Coleman, Frank Zappa, and Igor Stravinsky. Having been together with the same personnel for two and a half years, the band is tight almost to the point of telepathy. The Funkhouser Trio is based in New York City and has played in New York clubs such as the Knitting Factory, Small's, Detour, The C-Note, and Cornelia St. Caf. In a notable performance last fall, the group mesmerized a sold-out crowd at the Knitting Factory, New York's legendary home of cutting edge jazz. The trio has been drawing steady crowds to its weekly Monday night gig at the Gershwin Hotel since September 1997. The band was recently spotlighted on WFDU radio's Jazz Influences show. Members of the Trio have performed with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Phil Collins, Dave Liebman, and George Russell. Bandmembers have performed in a wide variety of New York venues including the Blue Note, Birdland, Sweet Basil, and Cami Hall, and have done live radio shows on New York stations WNYC and WBAI. They have played at such diverse locations abroad as the Yokohama Jazz Festival in Japan, Music Fest Canada in Edmonton, Somerset1s Jazz Club in Singapore, and the Beijing Opera House. Each member of the Trio brings a diverse musical background to the band: Pianist/composer John Funkhouser is also an accomplished bassist and avid jazz educator, currently serving as Director of Jazz Studies at Concordia College in Bronxville, NY. Drummer Blake Lindberg recently traveled to Ireland to record a CD and perform with the Terry Monahan Group, a band blending traditional Irish folk music with modern techno-pop. Bassist Matt Pavolka also performs regularly on trombone; he recently recorded a live CD at Birdland for Birdland Records with the Magalie Soriou Orchestra. Upcoming projects for 1999 include the band1s second CD and a large scale national tour during the summer, including at least three major Jazz festivals.

Album Details

From the Beginning, Last Crack Practices were Like Mini-concerts. Friends Would Show Up to Party While the Band Honed their Sound and Crafted their Songs. For Buddo, the Writing was on the Wall. Literally. He Wrote Poetry and Quotes with a Sharpee Marker all Over the Walls of the Storage Unit. It Would Be Called the "Sinister Funkhouse #17" and the Poetry on the Walls Would Become the Lyrics for the Band's First Album of the Same Name.

Theses guys were totally under rated, They should of had Motley Crue as there opening act. I know these guys and have seen them maney times at the annexx in madison wi. this album is excellent and if you ever get the chance see them in person.

All Around Insane!!.......2003-05-17

I have had the honor of playing with Funkhouser when he was my Professor at Manhattanville College!...Not only is he an insane pianist, but he plays one of the illest uprights you will ever hear....When I saw their band play live, I just could not get enough...They are extremely talented and compose some of the best jazz you will ever hear...This cd is one of my favorite jazz albums, and I cannot wait to hear the new one....Prof. if you read this, Kudos man!...You are awesome!!

This album is, in the best sense of the word, insane... Incredible skill, humor, and musical sense. I agree with the assessments of its similarities (i.e. MMW, etc. above). Check it out and support this rising group so they produce more. Plus, Funky's from New York *and* Kabeyun; what more needs to be said?

Funkhouse hasn't forgotten that the most important thing about making music is THE MUSIC! They play absolutely original music in their own way with little or no regard for categories or marketing compromises. This is jazz in the sense of the great improvising musicans that made american music so vital and powerful in this century, not museum music. This record should be in every home.

First review?

Well, this was one of those bands that you remember through a fog of booze and smoke, and swear was the best thing you had *ever* heard. Alt-country wasn't even a word yet, and the first time I heard them I didn't know what to think of the funkified rockin' country twang just killing the room in front of me.

Then Again is the cleanest representation available (only?) of that music, and still gets regular rotations in my player next to Son Volt, Wilco, Damnations, Freakwater, Jayhawks and Tom Waits.
