Product Description
Composer/Keyboard Artist Joe Kurasz continues to build on his success with the new release of his CD "SOUL SEARCHING". In this latest CD, Joe continues to create new musical connections, this time combining the elements of Rhythm & Blues, Soul and the sound of the vintage Hammond B3 and Piano to produce songs influenced by the past but flavored with his own special style.

Music has always been an essential part of Joe's life. He started playing at a very young age and was influenced by a diverse group of artists… Booker T., Jimmy Smith, John Coltrane, the Temptations, Burt Bacharach… artists from extremely different music genres, yet they performed and composed music that was very soulful and inspirational to Joe.

In "SOUL SEARCHING" Joe focuses on the Hammond B3 Organ as a lead instrument in mainstream Smooth Jazz. The Hammond B3 Organ produces a unique sound that one can feel both as a performer and as part of the audience. Joe has always had a special connection with this instrument and spent countless hours practicing on it, experimenting with the variety of sound and exploring the unlimited range of expressive possibilities.

According to Joe, "Soul is something you can't hold, but you know it when you feel it, especially in a song. SOUL SEARCHING is a special selection of songs recalling the inspiration and nostalgia of my youth. These tracks share some of my musical history in a way that I hope connects with listeners of all ages."

5 out of 5 stars AWB Masterpiece.......2006-10-26

Although it doesn't contain any of their most well-known and biggest hit singles, AWB's "Soul Searching" release is; by far, the most cohesive project the group produced during its' career surge in the mid-to-late 1970's. After the success of the 'white album'(simply titled "AWB"); spearheaded by the smash single "Pick Up The Pieces"; and the hurry-up follow-up "Cut The Cake"; the boys from Scotland finally were able to take their time and develop a collection of songs that lent themselves to a more fully-realized, comprehensive approach to recording; producing what turned out to be one of the superior R&B/Funk albums of the decade. Some of R&B's most-inspired releases came in the wake of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" landmark album released in 1971, and this album follows that tradition of a conceptualized set of songs merged together to form a great work of music that can be enjoyed from start to finish without having to skip around low ebbs in the program. Perhaps because their two prior releases did succeed so well commercially, they were feeling somewhat ambitious and decided to work at turning out a more fully-developed presentation rather than just another batch of catchy songs plus filler for an album to support singles. These tracks are all standouts - even the ones that weren't released as singles - showing great variety and outstanding musicality; and the opening "Overture" with the recapitulating theme at the closing really added a touch of class to the overall production. I was in attendance at their performance at the Hollywood Palladium on the night that Marvin suddenly appeared onstage when they went into their cover of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" and it virtually 'tore the roof off' the house that night! I always listen to this album whenever I feel somewhat 'off track' and it helps me get re-oriented back in the right direction every time. If you enjoy the party-time, fun side of their music; then here is their more serious, mature alternative side and a musical masterpiece, without a doubt!

5 out of 5 stars Anything but average.......2005-08-07

These guys are anything but average, and this album proves it. They finally came into their own with this album. There earlier stuff seemed like they didn't know what they wanted to sound like but it's clear after this album. From the hit slow jam "A love of your own" to subtle funk of "I'm the one" they found the right groove. If you want to start your collection of AWB then start with this album.

4 out of 5 stars Adult Contemporary AWB.......2004-06-20

This is the Average White Band's most mature and musically sophisticated studio album. If you like AWB for their radio-friendly funk workouts and catchy melodies, you would probably be happier with their earlier albums "AWB" and "Cut the Cake," or their "Best Of" compilation. "Soul Searching" has more of an adult contemporary sound, better suited for late-night Quiet Storm listening than for partying. The highlights of this album are the classic slow groove gem, "A Love of Your Own," and the breezy and jazzy uptempo "Queen of My Soul."

There are a couple of toe-tapping, head-bobbing funk songs here, most notably "Going Home," a great horn-dominated instrumental in the tradition of "Pickin' Up the Pieces" and "Cut the Cake." But even the midtempo numbers like "Love Your Life" and "I'm the One" have a jazzier, more adult feel than in AWB's earlier albums. As usual, the band is solid throughout, and the vocals, while thin and "average white," are competent and sincere. If you favor the jazzier, mellower side of AWB, this is the album for you.

5 out of 5 stars memories ...................2001-11-04

THIS cd (lp when I first bought it!) FINALLY pulled my coattails to AWB.
Before this recording, I felt AWB was a "2nd division" funk aggregate, but from the introductory "Overture", I *HEARD* that these guys were finally on to a mini-funk masterpiece.

For my tastes, their pseudo-JBs workouts like "Cut The Cake" & "Pickin Up The Pieces" didnt move me too much, but the musics here,( ESPECIALLY the beautiful emotive ballad, "A LOVE OF YOURE OWN", and the jazzy "Soul Searchin'" and "Sunny Days") really struck a chord in me.

I decided to buy the cd-- my lp is shot-- and as I recently reviewed a Leon Ware cd on Amazon, I got to thinkin..... that the AWB boys appear a bit influenced by him also, as well as the other obvious influences in their "blue-eyed soul" style.

The only real "criticism" I have for this recording (and actually something that bothered me in general about the AWB) -- the group has NO distinguishable soloist of much facility.

I once read guitarist Alan Gorrie mention the group can "play be-bop" , but I hear NO connection in his guitar style/technique that validates his claim.
I WISH HE COULD "PLAY BE-BOP", such as Sugarfoot from the Ohio Players did/does.

Managgia, for my taste HE (Sugar) was the BADDEST guitar player on the "R&B" circuit --- the classic solo on "Sweet Sticky Thang" substantiates that , I believe.
I wish AWB had a little more "chops" in the solo department, this is all I am saying!

I do enjoy the "push it to the limits" singing stlye of AWB, their falsettos just barely "make it", it's part of the group's charm, hehehe!

This cd has that subtle funk- it aint gonna blow out the sub-woofers- but it really connects, con mucho duende!
Simply is a "must have" in anyones CD collection.
You folks that use the term "old school ", this is recording that is "timeless" in the tradition, I hope you like it!....

5 out of 5 stars A Creative Gem From AWB.......2000-06-11

When I bought this album, I already had a gut feeling that I would be listening to something special. Well that's exactly what I expected upon hearing it. From the sweeping Overture to the closing Digging Deeper finale, the musical scope of this album is something that the band themselves must've been waiting for a good while to do. There are some familiar funky, self-conscious tunes like Love Your Life and the title track as well as some intimate, soulful laments such as A Love Of Your Own and Would You Stay. There's even an intense Latin-flavored track in Queen Of My Soul that turns out to be a real treat for genuine music lovers. I honestly don't think the level of inspired playing that the band had throughout this album can be found on any of their other releases, even the ones that are pretty decent in their own right. This one's almost surely a keeper and a must-have for AWB followers.

A lot of people mentioned that they can't find the songs of the singles in the CD. The interface in the CD is not very clear. The best way is to use Explorer on the CD. The song files are in Quicktime MOV format in the folder D:\DATA\QTS. I opened the files on Itunes and converted them to audio format. These files CAN'T be played from the original CD on a CD player.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing Energy from a Storied British Pub Band.......2006-02-28

Dexy's, in their earlier days, were quite the sonic performers. This album does not contain any of that "Come On Irene" stuff we all saw on MTV back in the early 80s. Nope. This effort shows the true, working-class, blue beat aficianados who could put out a wall of sound and rock the local football supporters into a frenzy with pulsing, frenetic songs. This is the good stuff, for sure. Truly, you won't believe that this band is the same one that donned those queer, matching railroad coveralls and bandanas, and skipped around like a bunch of Kansas City faggots on the telly, chanting "Too Rye Ayeeeeeeeeeeeeee." If you can forgive them that transgression (and I know it'll be difficult), it's well worth your time to check out "Searching ... ." Solid goodness.

5 out of 5 stars The first and greatest Dexys Album.......2004-10-08

I bought this CD having read 'A Music Fans' review not expecting to find any additional tracks and when I found the first five singles (A & B sides) I was delighted. As far as I can tell some of these tracks are not available anywhere else on CD. Tracks like The Horse, Dance Stance (the original version of Burn It Down) and Soul Finger really added to the whole concept of this album. Kevin Rowland has never sounded angrier.

2 out of 5 stars I thought that this would be "Geno".......2004-09-19

I am somewhat confused. I thought that this would have all the tracks that were on the Geno LP but, alas... no.
Only 4 tracks from "Geno" made it on to this CD:
1) Geno
2) There, There My Dear
3) Keep It
4) I'm Just Looking
The other tracks on this album are taken from other sources. Now, please do not get me wrong... I really like anything by Dexy's Midnight Runners; it just cheeses me off that I have to end up purchasing 3 more CDs just to get the original track listing from the "Geno" LP. Also, "The Horse" (from "Geno") is not available anywhere on CD!... thank you.

At one time, Life of Agony was a bleak, Goth metal band comparable to Type O Negative, but the only thing headbangers will find agonizing about Life of Agony is having to sit through the band's Soul Searching Sun. While the bandmembers still have a penchant for beefy guitars and surging wah-wah solos, it sounds like they've been listening to way too many Pearl Jam records lately. Gone is the hostility and grim claustrophobia of their earlier days, replaced with artificial vulnerability and trite melodies from the Grunge 101 textbook. Top it off with obligatory song titles like "Heroin Dreams" and "Angry Tree," and you're left with a disappointing, uninspired effort. --Jon Wiederhorn

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Hey Gloria.......2006-07-07

This is that said kid from the earlier review. I don't care that Type O and LOA have connections, I just cannot stand Type O in any way shape or form.

I looked at your profile and see that you are praising christianity and christian metal. I won't bother assailing you since it seems you do a good enough job embarrassing yourself.

Go worship Jesus, loser

5 out of 5 stars AMAZON REVIEWER SHOULD GO BACK TO LISTENING TO BLINK-182!.......2006-04-27

So you throw around words like "artificial" , "trite" and "uninspired" and, wow, automatically, you're a Reviewer (that's WITH a capital R - as in, for Retard, but that's an insult to the retarded...)
Emotional - that's how I'd categorize Life Of Agony. Heartfelt and honest, hurtful and haunting. Their music and songwriting are a revelation. Either you get it, or you don't. Their greatest strength, at least to me, was how they reinvented themselves with each album, refusing to regurgitate themselves into a formula. In this respect, they're like Suicidal Tendencies. Refusing steadfastly to cowtow to industry expectations, they took their loyal fans on a ride (never "for a ride") through uncharted territory and those who "got it" were forever grateful and blessed.
Soul Searching Sun is among their finest achievements, proving LOA to be a mature and sublime force to be reckoned with. Anyone who thinks that this album is "commercial" are missing out on something. This album is like a great painting, incorporating both broad strokes and smaller, subtle strokes to create a true masterpiece of genuine artistry.
To those of you who "get it" , you know what I mean.
To those who don't, and choose to merely brush off LOA with flippant, smug and faux intellectual posturing, well, I truly am sorry for your loss. You're missing something in your soul.
And, to make my point a little clearer, I consider all of LOA's albums -from River Runs Red to Broken Valley- to be all 5 star efforts.

2 out of 5 stars Response to "Hey Gloria" from "A Kid's Review".......2006-01-07

First of all, if you'll notice I didn't attack you. I just disagreed with you, that's all. You on the other hand felt the need to call me a loser for simply having a difference of opinion. Yes, I said you were an idiot and I'm sorry, but I had a good reason. Think about it...what I'm getting at is that Life of Agony's sound has been heavily influenced by Type O's sound. So to be a huge LOA fan and hate TON seems kind of odd to me when TON's keyboardist and producer also produced several LOA albums. Also, as stated earlier, my name is not Gloria, it's Paul. This is my mom's account. So to say "Hey Gloria" shows me that maybe I was justified in calling you an idiot. I apologize for the name calling, especially online. That's not my style. And yes, I like some Christian music. So freaking what!!! Music is music and if it's good, it's good. My tastes are extremely varied and I pretty much like a little bit of everything. I don't stick to one type of genre. And for people who are Christians but want heavy music. I was just giving a review that they might be interested in, since I discovered that Christian metal band from an ad in a metal magazine. I'm sorry if I offended you, but what else am I supposed to think? I'm a huge fan of both LOA and TON myself and am proud to see have seen them both live on several occasions. They put on some great shows. Take it easy. No hard feelings. Later.

4 out of 5 stars Not as bad as its made out to be.......2005-07-29

First of all, the Amazon reviewer is an idiot. LOA where never a "Gothic metal band comparable to Type O Negative(whom I hate)". There has never been anything remotely gothic about these guys. When they started they where originally part of the NYC hardcore scene. Their first album, River Runs Red is a masterpiece which was tapping from the same sources as Northwest bands like Soundgarden and Alice in Chains where at the time. LOA where never copying grunge. Heavy riffs and anguished lyrics contrasting with beautiful melodies and traditional songwriting has always been a part of their sound.

Soul Searching Sun is much better than Ugly and showcases some of the band's best ballads such as My Mind is Dangerous. Highly recommended

1 out of 5 stars Actually 1/2 Star.......2005-06-17

This album is awful. This was LOA's most blatant attempt at commercialism, but it does not work whatsoever. By this time in their career, Keith was disinterested and distraught and you heard it in his lack of effort. The album is jumbled with different styles generally not done well. Aside from the excellent Lead You Astray, this album is a poor attempt at too many styles of music.

On this compilation CD the stars are aplenty. With Macy Gray lacing the moody "We've Got Enough" with more urgency than she managed on The Id, Nelly Furtado's off-kilter "Legend," and Erykah Badu doing her cloying jazz routine on the somewhat precious "Today," some of the brightest lights in neo soul give it their all. Yet while this hodgepodge of remixes, album cuts, and new material might manifest the might of marquee power, it's the new jacks who come close to stealing the spotlight. Witness Jack Herrera's tangy soul stylings on the sexy "High Off You" or the creamy seduction of "Don't You Forget It" by Glenn Lewis, two more examples of the silky grooves this CD offers. --Amy Linden

I recommend this CD solely on the strength of 6 tracks. Tracks 1,2,3,4,5, and 12, make this album worth every penny. Maybe that's why some of these are the sample songs? These are soulful grooves that are engaging and unique. Though other tracks are pretty [weak], these 6 made the album one of my recent favs. ...

Great album. The heavy hitters (Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Macy Gray, and Nelly Furtado) drop some great tracks. The album also features some great up and comers. The still searching remix by Damian Marley, Stephen Marley, and Yami Bolo is really strong. Great album, I recommend it to any R&B/Soul fan.

Album Description

Detroit was the epicenter for the soulful revolution the world knows as Motown. However, Detroit and the surrounding cities making up Michigan were also home to an unparalleled underground music scene that supported, propelled, and fed off the Motown machine. Included here are absolute rarities from The Black Aces Of Soul and The Eyes Of Ebony next to now funk classics by The Detroit Sex Machines. Raw breaks and beats from Jake Wade and The Soul Searchers sit next to the melancholic charm of vocalist Dee Edwards, while intergalactic big band funk from Wendell Harrison drops down next to the freaky synth-driven soul of Aged In Harmony. Almost all these records have never been heard on CD. This is volume one in a comprehensive series, and it features detailed liner notes illustrated with never before seen images from the era.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Soul Funk Compilation.......2005-11-16

Real good audio document of rare soul and funk from the state of Michigan. Lots of good stuff here from Wendell Harrison, Tommy McGee, and Jake and the Soul Searchers. Most tracks survey the underground soul scene that existed along side of Motown during this era. Also includes artists from Grand Rapids and the metro Detroit area. Great variety of sounds: some jazzy, some gospel like, a little light disco flavor. Many will leave you wondering why some of these tracks were the lone releases for the creator artist. A must have for all the Soul Funk Brothers from Michigan, and a good pickup for any collector seeking rare and unique material.

    5 out of 5 stars Astonishing.......2006-02-26

This is a debut release? Charmaine Clamor has the vocal confidence and expressiveness of someone with 30 albums under her belt. What an astonishing debut. I'm already making a place in my collection for her next one.

Listen to her sing "Since I Fell for You" and you realize what they mean by "star quality." All I can say is wow!

    5 out of 5 stars A New Favorite.......2006-02-23

Our local jazz radio show plays Charmaine frequently and I've fallen in love with her voice, which is very soulful and expressive. Everything she sings goes right to your heart. I think she is a remarkable artist. This CD highlights her way with a lyric. On a side note, the band members are very, very good and the arrangements are quite original. Over all a stunning debut.

    5 out of 5 stars Seductive.......2006-02-18

I heard this young lady on the radio and I was seduced by her voice, which reminds me of a slightly less husky Diana Krall. Charmaine somehow can be very sensual in her singing without being vulgar. There's a lot of emotion in her voice. I believe her when she sings about love. Favorite tracks on "Searching for the Soul" are Charmaine's reworking of the Glady's Knight classic "Neither One of Us Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye" and the old standard "The Nearness of You," which puts Norah Jones to shame. Charmaine is a beautiful singer in many ways.

      Album Description

OK, I need to qualify this review by first stating that I'm in this band BUT I wasn't when I first heard this album. I feel I can accurately review this record because the emotions I felt upon first hearing it while sitting at my desk at work were, and still are, completely genuine. I love great records and almost as much as I love turning people on to great records.

Neal Weiss (singer/songwriter for Weed Patch) gave me this newly-completed CD after I answered his "drummer wanted" ad in the back of Music Connection magazine, March 2003. I'd just gotten out of a great project, working with a talented singer/songwriter and was looking for my next step. Los Angeles is filled with songwriters (and their bands) - some better than others - so looking for the right fit was proving difficult in my months-long search. Then I heard Maybe the Brakes Will Fail and I knew I had to do whatever I could to play music with Neal.

The songs on this record are nothing short of incredible. If you're a fan of honest, passionate songwriting that comes straight from the heart, you'll love this gem. Added to the great songs is the masterful production and craftsmanship of Seth Rothschild who took Neal's simple pop songs and layered on top of them all the textures, hooks and counter-melodies you could ever want on an album. Over the course of a year (2001-2002), Neal, Seth and a pile of incredible LA musicians would convene in an LA warehouse turned recording studio to bring this album to life, and that grass roots spirit permeates every second of this magnificent collection of tunes.
