Soundtracks are a mixed bag at best. Some are little more than an assortment of pieces, but others hang together effectively on their own, like this one. The idea of Chinese music--both popular and operatic--juxtaposed with the sounds of Nat King Cole performing Latin music might seem bizarre, but it works beautifully, sustaining a lush, romantic mood created both by the strings and the '40s Chinese music, itself a tinkling Hollywood pastiche. But as atmospheric as all this is, one track stands out above the others: "Blue," actually a version of the classic "St. James' Infirmary," takes on another dimension in Chinese hands. While familiar but completely alien at the same time, the slithering Asian sonorities mesh perfectly with the African-American form to create something evocative but with a sadness that goes beyond blues. The movie is of a time and place; the soundtrack is of a mood and yearning. Listen at night, with someone you love close by. --Chris Nickson
Customer Reviews:
Awsome Instrumental Music.......2007-03-09
The soundtrack is really good; I didn't like some of the songs (the Chinese ones) but there are only 3 in the whole CD. The instrumental music is awesome making the soundtrack an average good.
The Bing Crosby songs are very good but...........2006-07-17
In my opinion it`s the Bing Crosby-songs that makes this album worth buying, but these songs can be bought on compilations. The rest of the music is for people with special interest for backgroundmusic in films.
AMAZING! Hauntingly beautiful..........2006-05-09
So beautiful and emotional, it makes you want to cry! The score for the film and the collection of music together is absolutely breathtaking....
A great soundtrack for a lover of WKW films.......2006-03-22
I loved the film, so I love the soundtrack, which brings back memories of the film. WKW uses period music to evoke the emotions and feel of the time period of the film.
as gorgeous as the film!.......2006-02-11
Film soundtracks are often disappointing---there are songs from the movie that are not on the CD, songs on the CD that were not in the film, different versions of songs on the CD than in the film, etc.
Happily, this soundtrack is absolutely faithful to the film, and it is masterfully interwoven with dialogue excerpts from the film which complement and build on the music instead of being obtrusive. I don't understand a word of Chinese but still enjoyed listening to the actors' voices, and also liked the bits of traditional Chinese music as well. There are some tracks that I don't remember from the film but they are not throw-away filler in any way, just beautiful extras in the same vein.

Classic Duets.......2003-04-16
Don Cherry's music has lately been slowly trickling out on CD. This excellent Duet recording with Ed Blackwell brings together the two "Mu" albums recorded in Paris in 1969. The chemistry of these two Musical Masters is great. Cherry's trumpet is big, bold and as vibrant as ever - darting and diving while Blackwell provides a perfect catalyst for explosive interactions. I especially enjoy Cherry's Bamboo flute and Piano sprinkled througout this disc. I love the way the sound shifts to different cultures without losing Cherry's unique vibe. This music is very tasteful and you can easily lose yourself in its' beauty. These two artist paint vivid musical pictures with plenty of textures and great color. Cherry and Blackwell are very insightful and intuitive throughout the recording. There are no weak moments. I wish someone would do a complete box set of all of Cherry's music. He was definitely a well respected musician around the globe, but still goes under-appreciated here at home.
If you enjoyed the duet recordings of Ornette Coleman (Soapsuds, Soapsuds) or Charlie Haden ("Closeness" Duets & The Golden Number), You will enjoy listening to this music. Great recording - 4 1/2 Stars.

Album Description
The UK underground is on fire in 2006. It's undeniably a special, fertile time and BBC Radio 1 dee-jay Mary Anne Hobbs wanted to capture some of the unique energy of this generation on a single compilation. Warrior Dubz represents a collection of some of the pioneering underground artists she's been supporting on her show.
More than half of the tunes featured on Warrior Dubz were produced exclusively for the album. The others are the underground classics that helped define the 2006 scene. Hobbs is responsible for shaping the agenda of one of the most trend-setting and respected underground music shows on English radio. Regarding her influence on the music she champions, consider this: When BBC Radio1 announced a new "specialist" schedule, her show, formerly called Breezeblock, was rechristened simply Mary Anne Hobbs.
Her mission is to find truly elemental new music and present it in step with emerging global scenes. At the core of the show is the next generation of dubstep, grime, drum'n'bass, dark dancefloor, hip hop, techno, IDM, radical electronics and any other new music that will, if you listen closely, change your life.

Customer Reviews:
The most noble voice.......2004-05-28
Victoria de los Angeles' voice not only has a silken quality and fascinating glow to it but it is one of the most regal, noble sounds you'll ever hear. She illuminated those moments of quietness, gentleness and noble, feminine pride and elegance like no other soprano before and after her. This release of her "Spanish Songs" has never been surpassed. The songs of her homeland seem to have been written for her beautiful instrument alone, she fills every piece with special beauty and charm, religious flair and beautiful, noble simplicity. Buy this recording and see why Victoria is one of the best sopranos ever having come from Spain.
PURCHASE THIS JEWEL WHILE YOU CAN.......2002-01-08
FOR A LONG TIME "SONGS OF SPAIN" HAS BEEN MY FAVORITE ALBUM OF CLASSICAL, POPULAR, SECULAR AND RELIGIOUS (CHRISTIAN AND SEPHARDIC) SPANISH SONGS. DE LOS ANGELES DEFIES A RIVAL IN THIS GENRE. DE LARROCHA, SORIANO AND ZANETTI PROVIDE UNEQUALED ACCOMPANIEMENTS. THE RECORDINGS ARE SECOND ONLY TO LIFE PERFORMANCES. I UNDERSTAND THAT EMI INTENDS TO TAKE THIS SET OUT OF PUBLICATION. PURCHASE THIS JEWEL WHILE YOU CAN! I JUST PURCHASED MY THIRD SET FROM AMAZON AND I TREASURE IT AS MUCH AS MY FIRST!
luminous artistry from a genius.......2000-12-26
the vocal artist of vocal artistsdisplays her absolutely gorgeous voice and musical understanding of spanish feeling with a warmth that is unmatched anywhere.the only thing better was to hear her in person!
A special Dignity and an Unfailing Beauty of Voice........2000-09-17
This set offers four generously-filled CDs comprising almost 140 Spanish songs from Victoria de los Angeles' repertoire. To all of them she brings a special dignity and an unfailing beauty of voice. The earliest recordings date from 1950 and the last is the items she sang at the opening of the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. Yes, you will find the ubiquitous "Clavelitos!" here, and a later version of "La maya el ruisenor" from "Goyescas". The enclosed booklet provides illuminating notes by Lionel Salter, who also translated many of the texts which are also included. Accompanists include Gerald Moore and Alicia de Larrocha, and Victoria de Los Angeles provides a guitar accompaniment herself in one song. The last track of all, a zapateado from a zarzuela, recorded live in New York, must almost have brought the house down.

Igloo Magazine's REVIEW.......2005-12-02
Review by: Luca Maini, Igloo Magazine (www.igloomag.com)
(07.15.05) Don't bother about genres. Don't call it grime, 8-bar or dubstep. All you need is a few oldskool terms: breaks, bass and industrial. I was expecting only dancefloor material here, but the first half of Degenerate is more like Scorn doing broken beat. Which is just what the world needed: a mixture of tight drum programming, squeezed basslines and pitch black backgrounds. The first track "Pop Pop VIP" is quite danceable, less than the original though, but from "Thunder" to "Venus" it starts a deep journey into industrial realms, beats and snares are always hammering, between loads of distorted, buzzing and wobbly bass. The result is claustrophobic, unsettling and yet striking, for what was only a sub-subgenre a year ago has made impressive steps towards unheard territories with Vex'd.
The choice of samples is very accurate; the woman speaking in "Corridor" sends shivers down my spine every time I hear her. "Gunman" and "Lion VIP" unleash the party potential of Vex'd music, with ragga samples, guns, straight breaks and basslines more dedicated to your legs. "Fire" and "Slime," instead, turn toward a more laid back feeling --rhythms are always solid but more rarefied, like the deeper works of Mark One's One Way. More quality comes from the addition of spooky interludes, like the eerie "Cold," the explicit "Cruhser Dub," and the anxious echoing "Destruction," plus the amazing idea of adding a second CD with the tunes released only on vinyl so far. We're speaking of "Pop Pop," "Canyon," "Lion," "Ghost," all these tracks made quite a stir on the British floors, and even if "Smart Bomb" is not as famous as the previous ones, I can assure it's another corker, like you hadn't enough already. This is a serious contender for my album of the year, if you want to know what is the sound of the underground in the year 2005, don't hesitate to check out Degenerate.
Unmissable.......2005-08-19
Taking the vibe right out into the unknown... like a broken beat-dubstep hybrid, all hemorrhaging riddim convulsions and sledgehammer bass attack that sounds like the next level of everything. Make no mistake this is gonna be unmissable. Vex'd are the Great White Hope for electronica and "Degenerate" is gonna change the landscape. With trace-elements of early "Aphex Twin" circa the R&S EPs (back when he really was making Melodies from Mars), the abrasive-yet-spiritual intensity of "Pan Sonic" in full-flight, the sheer monolithic grind of "Suicide" at their most incisive, all wrapped-up in production levels of the highest order... it'll probably be the album of the year. Gutterbreakz.

Customer Reviews:
Large collection for the price, but not perfect.......2006-07-30
As with these sorts of all-inclusive collections, there are issues to be had with 'National Anthems of the World' as performed by the Swarovski Orchestra. Primary--to me--is that these performances and arrangements come off as being rather sterile and bland, though it's perhaps not surprising since I doubt very much that most of the nationalities of the nations represented here have citizens actually in the Swarovski Orchestra. There's little of the passion that a national band or orchestra would have in playing their own nation's anthem, much like listening to a generic studio band play play a collection of college fight songs (and there ARE CDs of those out for sale as well).
That said, this 2-disc CD set does offer a wide spectrum of national anthems, though it does a far better job of covering European nations more so than any other region. For instance, Central America is poorly represented in this collection as is Africa which, aside from Cameroon, the heart of that continent is conspicuously ill-depicted. But the biggest omission is China; neither the mainland or Taiwanese anthems are included in this set. Considering that The People's Republic of China is the most populous nation on earth, as well as a global political and economic force to be reckoned with, even in 1996 (this CD set dates from 2004, but at least one online database list the contents from the mid-1990s), this is a glaring oversight in my opinion.
The final gripe deals with the included documentation. Each of these anthems DO have titles to them, none of which the producers of this collection ever bother to mention and provide. One has to go to Wikipedia or some other resource to look up the actual name of the anthems included here. This is information that is relatively cheap to research and out of courtesy to the consumer should've been provided for this set, especially since this collection has been around in some form for over a decade already.
For the money, it's a fairly good buy for those who want a collection of national anthems. But the producers could've done a better job of compiling the contents of this collection, and what music there is would've certainly benefitted from a bit more impassioned play.
excellent selection & quality sound.......2005-08-27
Swarovski Orchestra did an excellent job in this compilation. I work in Foreign Service & I use this CD to play US anthem & the host country anthem during events. Unlike other compilations which shorten the pieces, this offers full-length pieces saving me from embarrassment.

awesome.......2007-01-09
Winter is one of Funk's 'softer' albums, yet still maintains that eerie feel that helps maintain gripping awe throughout. Not as mentally perplexing as the unparalleled 'Huge Chrome Cylinder Box Unfolding' (hardly anything is), but still a terrific LP nonetheless. The intro song 'Dad' has haunting vocals and tells a pretty self-explanatory meaning of the song. From here onwards there is a pretty relaxed feel to the LP. It all binds pretty well, then you get to 'January' which has some decent vocals that go well. The song 'In Quod' easily the finer moment of the LP and quite possibly one of his top 10 songs ever (opinions, opinions). The LP slowly drifts on from here calmly.
To conclude, an awesome LP to own, but maybe not as a starter.
a venetian snares album........2005-03-27
"Winter In the Belly of a Snake" gets 4 stars only because it has "suffocate" on it. The rest of the album is so-so and would warrant a three. This cd is worth the price of admission simply for "Suffocate", which, if it could be approximated by stars, would get about 212.
The album on the whole is very quiet and clicky, panned all over the freakin place, and of course crazy ass time signatures as you would come to expect. I thought the first five tracks were solid, then he kinda runs out of things to do or something. Very well programmed, just not very musical imho. That said, "Suffocate" is probably the most beautiful song I have ever heard and it haunts me constantly. "Tattoo" and "Dad" are very good songs too. Also "January" just for the expert placement of Garrison Keillor sample ;)
There are a couple vocals on here, "Dad" and "Tattoo" use both very well. Venetian Snares is the techno you play for your punk/metal/hardcore friends who think they are so cool because they listen to hard music. If they aren't into vsnares, they haven't heard hard music, and once they hear it from you they will be like OMG... how...?!
awesome, perhaps my fav VS release to date.......2005-03-25
venetian snares is absolutely incredible, aaron funk is the most original musician snice cEvin Key, i think its a joke when people describe him as drum and bass, or compare him to autechre or squarepusher, what a joke. venetian snares is its own genre, and he is so far ahead of any of the people he is compared to, when there is no comparision, his music doesnt even sound like someone is making it, it just sounds like it is happening. he is a genius, i think you either love his music so much you can't stand it, or you dont like it at all. i dream about his music, i can hardly sleep at night b/c i get so excited about his music, im being serious, i love it, i cannot get enough, luckily he is so talented that he has released like 12 Cds in only 5 years. his music has changed my life, i especially like this album and i am a huge fan of his noisier stuff, like horse and goat. his music is one of a kind, there are really no loops, but somehow it just fits and all the sounds fit together in a very organic manner.
A quieter, weirder Venetian Snares.......2004-12-22
Although some of his other albums have their quiet moments, most of what I've heard from Venetian Snares so far is in your face aggression. So I was surprised when I first started listening to Winter In The Belly Of A Snake. Those expecting tracks like Hand Thrown or Make Ronnie Rocket will be disappointed - while they're a far cry from drum and bass they're a lot closer to it than anything here. If you want something like Find Candace or Making Orange Things you'll probably be disappointed as well. Winter In The Belly Of A Snake is a more subdued, abstract affair.
The synth sounds seem to ape 70s progressive rock more than they do 90s electronic. The drum patterns sound more like odd noises and sound effects at times rather than more convential drum sounds, even when compared with other Venetian Snares albums. Often we are treated some avant-garde-esque piano or violin sounds, something his heavier albums didn't have time for.
Winter In The Belly Of A Snake is, of all I've heard by Venetian Snares, a harder album to listen to yet its very enjoyable as a consequence. I do need to be in the right mood to listen to it (whereas I could listen to Find Candace or Higgins Ultra Low Track Glue Funk Hits just about any time), but I often find that that's the beauty of this sort of music - the way it plays with your imagination and opens itself to you over time. If you don't live for the abstract and subdued then Higgins Ultra Low Track Glue Funk Hits or Chocolate Wheelchair Album are better bets, but if you like weirder, quieter music that isn't afraid to flirt with avant-garde, then this album is one well worth looking at.
not bad, but it's not Squarpusher.......2004-11-07
Venetian Snares is often compared to Squarepusher. Sure, both artists apply the same frentic chopped up breakbeat technique which superficially sounds quite alike. But where Squarepusher still manages to make it all swing and give it a very musical twist, Venetian Snare's beats often sound either stiff or just very chaotic without much musical interest. For me this often leads to some weariness after a a few tracks: it all just sounds too much alike. Of course, Venetian Snare's style *is* breakcore and not drum & bass, but it would be pleasant if he showed some sense of adventure and would venture into other styles more.
Still, this is not bad music by far. It is excellently produced and contains some interesting feats of sonic layering. So who knows: Venetian Snares might be onto something really groundbreaking in the future. Not just yet, though.

classic dubstep.......2007-05-16
This may be my favorite CD I've purchased in the last year.
I'm really feeling the beat programming (huge deep dark bass groove, w/lots of intricate jazzy cymbals) and textures (a unique real-time knob-tweaking IDM dubbing of the mix).
Blip-Hop Heaven!!!.......2007-02-13
Excellent album! I've been experimenting and looking for some new sounds. I recently purchased "Body Riddle" by Clark which was really good but I must admit it took some time to grow on me. I stumbled upon this album while browsing the Planet-Mu website looking for new Mu-Ziq material. Some really nice grooves here, some robotic, pop-lockish stuff, no real skippable tracks. Standout tracks in my opinion are Rikta, Silver Birch Solstice, and Hyloz. Definitely worth the money. I'll be looking forward to future releases from Boxcutter. Check it out.
Dubstep Masterpiece From Planet-Mu.......2006-06-24
Having been a big fan of Mike Paradinas' label Planet-Mu for years, it's always nice to hear an up and cummer in the electronic scene. This album reminds me of the techniques used by a lot of IDM luminaries, such as Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, and Luke Vibert to name a few. The difference here is the entry into an entirely new subgenre; whereas drum'n'bass speed up breakbeats for effect, dubstep relatively slows them down to a crawl using time-stretching. Definitely someone to keep an eye on.

Customer Reviews:
unbalanced compilation.......2007-01-11
this compilation disappointed. I like a lot of Planet Mu artists and was psyched to get this release but it didn't deliver. I feel like this double CD had enough good cuts for a single CD and then was padded with a lot of left-field odd ball tracks and throw-away b-side tracks. It certainly didn't live up to the concept album sounding title. There was no common ground to tie all the tracks together.

Bring in the noise, bring in the FUNK.......2006-11-30
A couple months have passed, which means that it must be time for another Venetian Snares release. Honestly, I sometimes wonder whether Aaron Funk is some sort of cyborg who can live on only 2 hours or sleep or so a night based on how much music he releases, especially given his fairly consistent output. The Hospitality EP basically continues right where his last album (Cavalcade Of Glee And Dadaist Happy Hardcore Pom Poms) left off, with more of his insanely-detailed beat programming work offset with his more recent attention to more melodic pieces.
"Frictional Nevada" opens the short release (six tracks and just over twenty-five minutes of music), and the five minute track is one of the best things he's done. Over the course of the first two minutes (between one third and one half of the total run length), he layers warm synths, horns, strings, and some keyboard melodies into a delightful swell before an absolutely hammering blast of drum programming shreds the track to bits. From there, those two pieces of the track fight like Jekyll and Hyde, with drum bursts overtaken by more melodic swoons and vice-versa.
"Beverly's Potatoe Orchestra" follows, and it's more standard fare, with rapid-fire beat blurts chunking apart over distorted vocals and playful synth melodies, while "Shoot Myself" again brings some string-synth swells and quieter moments in alongside a short section of spitfire beats. The highlight on the remainder of the EP is the six-minute mind-bender of "Duffy," which takes delight in throwing everything and the kitchen sink into the mix as 8-bit madness, filtered vocal samples, sub-rattling low-end blasts, and of course berserk beats keep the track slamming for its entirety. While it's a little more inconsistent than some of his previous work, there are still enough head-spinning moments on this release to make it worth recommending.
