This album appears in the footsteps of 2004's The Girl in the Other Room but doesn't sound like a follow-up. Whereas The Girl saw the pianist-singer abandon the Great American Songbook for more personal pastures, From This Moment On sees her working out on standards done in traditional arrangements. Although the tracks here are by the likes of Cole Porter, Jimmy Van Heusen and Sammy Cahn, and the Gershwins, Krall sounds more at ease than ever before; perhaps digging deep inside on The Girl loosened her up. Backed by the Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchestra on seven tracks, Krall sings off the big band with ease. On the title track, she keeps up with a galloping bass and explosive brass arrangements and even ventures into scatting toward the end of the song. Her voice has also acquired a wonderfully worn texture in the past few years, and it works wonders on the ballads (just listen to "Isn't This a Lovely Day" and "Little Girl Blue" for instance). Diana executes her songs with her strong, yet mellow voice.
The "back-up" band is a great asset to this CD, so between Diana singing and the band playing, you feel like you're "In Concert!"

From This Moment On~ Diana Krall is easy listening jazz at its best. Ms Kralls vocal skills are remarkable and she sings these traditional jazz tunes with conviction and fortitude of a grandmaster of jazz. The book-let is beautifull if a bit sparse. The photographs are simply put it amazing and she looks stunning. The production value is right on the money and I like it since it so easy to listen to even for jazz beginners such as myself. Highly recommended indeed and I easily give this album 5 out of 5 stars.

What went on with Ms. Krall?.......2007-05-24

Repertoire consists of rather expected standards. All broadly covered brilliantly by so many vocalists in the past. Ms. Krall and her arrangers adds nothing at all.

Singing offers no surprise than a mainstream singer would do.

Orchestra is currently the darling big band of the time being. Good players, rare good ideas, nothing impelling.

There is an original and beautiful arrangement here: for the track 'How Insensitive'.

And that's all. Let's wait for the next Krall album.

What is there to say? Diana Krall is simply the best. This album is another fine example of consistently high quality musicianship.

At a time when the majority of those his age are drifting into retirement, 65-year-old Bob Dylan has put the capper on a three-record run that ranks with the best in his storied, 44-album career. Like Time Out of Mind and Love and Theft before it, Modern Times is a rootsy, blues-soaked pool of the purest form of Americana--skipping the progressive bells or whistles for an understated backing by his touring band. Dylan's voice, which cracks, rasps and moans from the pop singer's pulpit, hasn't been this rich and emotive since 1976's Desire. And while his lyrics prolong his steadfast allusions to a higher power and his own immortality, they are not without the Dylan mirth, as when he sings of tracking pop queen Alicia Keys from Hell's Kitchen to Tennessee in "Thunder on the Mountain," the album's opener, which teams with "Someday Baby" and "Rollin' and Tumblin'" (for which Dylan misguidedly claims writing credit) as the record's most fiery numbers. Still the greatest of all time.......2007-07-10

At 23 years old I am not your typical Bobhead, I own all 30+ Dylan albums including bootlegs. I have been to several Dylan concerts over the last few years. Dylan has come out with 3 studio albums the last 10 years all critical successes. With Modern Times Dylan was the oldest artist to reach number one on the Billboard 200 chart. Out of the three this is my least favorite. I loved Love and Theft and liked Time Out of Mind. Love & Theft was loud, funny and all around great. Time Out of Mind was a little depressing but had amazing lyrics. Modern Times is a mix between the two albums. To be completely honest I only liked three songs on this album: Thunder on the Mountain, Spirit on the Water and Workingman Blues #2. Someday Baby gets better with every listen so maybe I will put that one on there too. But who cares? It's Dylan....get the cd already.

Aging we may be but still relevant: older, wiser, gentler, more tolerant and deeply clarified about the daily human commonalities that join us all. Just when fans think they have a handle on Bob Dylan, he shifts gears and opens his reach in a new direction letting us know that the rest of us can do the same. I heard the deafening noise........2007-06-26

This is Bob Dylan's 32nd studio album. Most of the songs are adaptations of older songs (mostly blues songs) with new lyrics by Dylan. The music has a rather "rootsy" feel to it, while still sounding modern. I won't get into a song by song analysis, because many more knowledgeable people than me have already done that. I'll just call it a damn good album of Dylan singing the blues and leave it at that.

This is real music!!!.......2007-06-26

"Modern times" is Bob Dylan's 44th album, his first US #1 in some 30 years, and winner of 2 Grammys. It had all the major (and minor) critics practically falling over themselves to come up with the most gushing reviews on release.

It's also the first Bob Dylan album I've owned. All the above listed achievements piqued my interest and so I took the plunge and got it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not new to his music (I love "Like a rolling stone", "Forever young" and "Blowin' in the wind" to mention a few).

At just 10 tracks (though clocking past an hour) flowing through folk/country/blues/rock, with superior musicianship and storytelling lyrics (though sometimes cryptic and laden with old testament Biblical imagery -"if I catch my enemies sleeping/I'll just slaughter `em where they lie" from "Ain't talkin'", "Spirit on the water/darkness on the face of the deep" from "Spirit on the water"), superb stuff!

Opening is "Thunder on the mountain" which does just that. A great rock and roll number with lyrics that manage to fit Alicia Keys in the picture. Other uptempo tracks are the rocking blues of "Rollin' and tumblin'", the blues of "Someday baby" (winner of best solo rock vocal performance Grammy), and "The levees gonna break" (great bassline).

My favourites though are the slower stuff; the tender "Spirit on the water", the retro and reflective "When the deal goes down", "Working man's blues #2" (simply stunning and one of my favourites), the more country styled "Beyond the horizon", "Nettie Moore", and the 8 plus minute closing cut "Ain't talkin'", my other favourite.

His heartfelt raspy, nasal vocal style is one you either love or loathe, but it fits each song like a glove.

Listening to Dylan, I can see where loads of other acts derive their muse: Eric Clapton, Chris Rea, Dire Straits, even Springsteen to mention a few. Well, he's got a new fan in me.

A Review With the New Listener In Mind.......2007-06-20

Bob Dylan is definitely an acquired taste, especially if you're 30 or younger and wonder what all the fuss is about.

I borrowed MODERN TIMES from my local library and gave it a listen. Dylan talk-sings his way through a series of toe-tappin' blues and rockabilly songs, some fast, some slow. Dylan's in his early sixties now, and has led a rough life. He nearly died once in a motorcycle accident, smoked, and battled booze and drug problems off and on. It shows up in his voice, which is raspy and croaky.

I just imagine a weathered old frog in a slouch hat and suspenders, sitting on a porch somewhere in Mississippi with an old guitar. He sounds like Leon Redbone's long-lost brother. Compare his voice to the astoundingly still-solid vocal chords of octogenarian jazzman Tony Bennett, and you'll see how taking good care of one's instrument can make a big difference to a singer later in his life. In fact, compare his voice on MODERN TIMES to his quartet of "religious" albums from the 1980s (Slow Train Coming, Saved, Shot of Love, and Infidels, all four of which I recommend), and you'll realize that Bob Dylan actually COULD sing when he wanted to, contrary to his detractors.

Just keep in mind that his manner of singing suits the material. After all, he's not a contestant on AMERICAN IDOL, and he's not singing Celine Dion hits. Think of him more like a poet who sings a little bit, with a really good blues band backing him up, and you'll be able to judge what he's doing here. He's decided to be Minnesota Bluesman, just for the fun of it.

I disagree with another reviewer below, who claims that Dylan's words are clear as a bell. I couldn't understand him 30-40% of the time.

I think you'll need to be someone who likes old Southern blues music, to get into this album. I also think Dylan writes words just because he finds them fun to read and say, or because they're poetically evocative, even though they don't make any sense. You'll find yourself saying "But what does that mean?", or "What is this song ABOUT?". even while you enjoy the imagery of the words. A 63-year-old Dylan chasing Alicia Keys up and down the hills of Tennessee? You kind of need to shift the gears of your logic into neutral.

I dislike music that uses profanity, so that turned me off to 1-2 of the songs. For me, Dylan's voice is too croaky and odd, and I find that distracting. I guess that means I'm not a true fan. But I like this style of music, and the band is very good.

This "back-to-the-roots" road-trip documentary CD/DVD from blues-rocking guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd can be viewed in two ways--it's either the culmination of a long-held desire to promote and play with some unheralded blues veterans before they pass away (as six had already done since the recording was made, 2½ years before its early 2007 release) or a way to regain the blues audience Shepherd all but alienated on his artistically and commercially disappointing 2004 hard-rock release, The Place You're In. Ultimately, it succeeds on both accounts. Regardless of the project's inspiration, the results by and large justify whatever the means might have been to get this show on the road--literally and figuratively. Shepherd hit the highway for a week and a half along with producer Jerry Harrison (ex-Talking Heads), a portable studio, and backup musicians including the rhythm section from Stevie Ray Vaughan's Double Trouble. He searched out blues artists both obscure (the late guitarist Etta Baker, who plays in her kitchen, is a highlight) and better known (Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown and B.B. King) for a series of acoustic and electric jams, all of which feature Shepherd--who, to his credit, generally keeps his hot-dogging tendencies in check. A closing concert featuring members of Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters' bands never quite generates the heat it should, but country bluesmen Cootie Stark, Neil Pattman, and harmonica ace Jerry "Boogie" McCain provide plenty of sparks. Shepherd seems sincere enough, but the real stars are the ageing musicians who have maintained their chops and intensity through a lifetime of performing music that clearly comes from the soul. --Hal Horowitz

I bought this CD/DVD AFTER seeing KWS in concert at Viejas here
in San Diego. What a treat to see and hear Pinetop Perkins and
Hubert Sumlin among others! My estimation of KWS as a performer
and good guy increased by a quantum leap after seeing the show.
He may be one the best guitarists I've ever seen live, and he
respectfully kept that fiece talent in check when the others were
stepping out. He seems a real gentleman as well as lover of the
music and the people.

The package is excellent, a real gem. The interviews and background
materials are touching, especially of the folks that have since passed.

BUY THIS CD. THESE GUYS ARE THE REAL DEAL. YOU WON'T BE SORRY!

I stumbled on this by accident while looking for another blues cd (big blues fan). I read about how Kenny Wayne Sheperd wanted to connect with these old blues pioneers and it sounded like it might be worth a try.He and his crew have put together one of the most entertaining documentories
I have ever seen.The cd is fantastic as well with track after track of pure blues. If you are a blues fan this DVD/CD combo is a must. You won't be disappointed.

AMAZING cd..........2007-06-23

This is one of the best works of pure music I have bought in awhile. Not very often do you buy something where the artist really tried to make a statement with the music, but here, they do. For KWS and company to just go out, find the ROOTS of the music we listen to today, and make music on the spot with them is just amazing. Too bad they didnt bring more film to document even more than they already did. I could watch that footage for days. Everything here is beyond top notch. Very insightful, provides a glimpse of where the music came from and where it is going. If your a fan of ANY kind of blues, southern, or just guitar led music...you will love this.

This soundtrack to the film written and directed by Craig Brewer is as steeped in the Southern blues as his Hustle and Flow was in hip-hop. The biggest surprise here is how well actor Samuel L. Jackson (who seems to have a thing for "Snake" films) holds his own as a blues singer against selections from Son House and R.L. Burnside. He sounds like a throwback to the classic Delta bluesmen on "Just Like a Bird Without a Feather," does a convincing take on the Blind Lemon Jefferson title track, and rocks the juke joint on "Alice Mae" and a down-and-dirty recasting of "Stack-O-Lee." Produced by the Bo-Keys' Scott Bomar (who also scored Brewer's previous movie), the 17-cut soundtrack features a kaleidoscopic array of blues, from the primal throb of the Black Keys' "When the Lights Go Out" and the funk of Bobby Rush's classic "Chicken Heads" to the spiritual lilt of Precious Bryant's "Morning Train" and the North Mississippi Allstars' expansive finale, "Mean Ol' Wind Died Down." --Don McLeese

Album Description

This soundtrack to the excellent film was obviously put together by people who both know and feel a responsibility to the blues. Samuel L Jackson adds vocals to four tracks and does an admirable job; on 'Just like a Bird Without a feather' he more than holds his own alongside classic blues singers like RL Burnside and Jessie Mae Hemphill. John Doe--from the punk band X--adds a track as well that fits in much better than one might think.

Wonderful Soundtrack!.......2007-03-11

Watching the movie I was overwhelmed by the greatness of its soundtrack, and after purchasing this CD I was pleased to see that everything still seemed as wonderful. I am not a blues afficianado, but I do appreciate good music. I think that most anyone could enjoy this soundtrack.

On this relatively good collection of mostly blues tunes, the main curiosity item is to see how well actor Samuel Jackson carries off the singer role. He sings four songs on this soundtrack CD, and acquits himself pretty admirably, although the standard comment about the day job does apply here. Otherwise the theme is the blues, but actually several of the tunes swim in that deep, dark water where blues, soul, gospel and rock 'n' roll meet. I thought the John Doe cut was excellent, and I also really liked the R&B leanings of the Bobby Rush track, and the Black Keys song is pretty great too. The score cues by Scott Bomar provide nice atmosphere in a Ry Cooder-ish vein (smoky slide guitar). In all, the CD is a reasonably enjoyable listen.

North Mississippi Hills blues sampler.......2007-02-26

The soundtrack to the upcoming film, "Black Snake Moan" is a nice curiosity for the blues aficionado, but like opening Pandora's box for the uninitiated. Those familiar with the hypnotic, drowning, trance-like sounds of the North Mississippi hills a la Fat Possum records will find a lot to enjoy here, including tracks by the actual visible heads of that style, such as the late Jessie Mae Hemphill and R.L. Burnside. In fact, this entire CD relies heavily on the aural legacy of R.L. Burnside, providing some sort of last will after the bluesman's passing last year.
For those unfamiliar with the evolution of blues as a genre, the North Mississippi blues is somehow primitive, repetitive (almost mantra-like), but results in a very authentic, tribal-style variety of the blues. But blues and movie lovers alike will be curious about Samuel L. Jackson's credibility as a bona fide blues singer. The surprise is how adequate he is. He might not be the next Muddy Waters, but he delivers convincingly and, despite lacking a thunderous voice, he owns the role of a bluesman as a modern herald of human suffering. His outrageous cover of "Stackolee" fronting the R.L. Burnside live unit plus Luther Dickinson from the North Mississippi Allstars is a highlight, but his recitative to eerie bluesy sounds in "Black Snake Moan" is even better.
The established names showing up in this CD include Bobby Rush, fresh from the Chitlin circuit, acoustic blues-gospel singer Precious Bryant, as well as the aforementioned Jessie Mae Hemphill and R.L. Burnside. One misses at least one track from the other godfather of the North Mississippi sound, Junior Kimbrough. Many listeners will be already familiar with the North Mississippi Allstars. Their entry on this CD is a mellow, evocative piece augmented by fife-and-drum background over NMA's classic and classy slide sound.
The soundtrack tracks, by Scott Bomar, include a true allstar lineup including the Dickinson brothers and Charlie Musselwhite on harp, and they are uniformly exciting and interesting, keeping a sense of continuity throughout the CD.
In summary, this is more than a curiosity for blues aficionados, sitting proudly by their Junior Kimbroughs' and R.L. Burnsides', and it will definitively attract outside attention to this particular brand of the blues, providing an introductory-level package that will bring on more "true believers". Highly recommended.

Stack-O-Lee from RL Burnside CD "Well, Well, Well..." on MC Records.......2007-02-13

This is a very good soundtrack heavily influenced by R.L. Burnside. That raunchy, X-rated version of Stack-O-Lee sung by Samuel Jackson is directly from a version that Burnside sings on his MC Records CD "Well, Well, Well..." (that incidentally has blues singer Curtis Salgado laughing wickedly in the background). I believe the Burnside recording is the most unique version of this song ever recorded.

Some singer/songwriters (think Paul Westerberg and Elliott Smith) develop their world-weariness through the unforgiving trials of passing years and the heart-breaking grind of the music business. Tab Benoit's album titles leave little doubt as to where he's from or the music he plays. Brother to the Blues, Fever for the Bayou, Wetlands, and now Power of the Pontchartrain exude the sweaty Louisiana swamp, blues, and R&B inherent in their names. But that only tells part of the story--the rest is in the grooves where Benoit's distinctive, grainy voice and tough Telecaster leads bring soul, grit, and intensity to a sound already infused with an earthy sensibility. There's more of the same on this disc, but that's no criticism. Benoit generally sticks with others' songs here, yet he unearths hidden gems. Julie Miller's "Midnight and Lonesome" is dragged into the murky swamps as a driving ballad with eerie qualities that live up to its name. Miller and husband Buddy are also credited with the righteous-yet-rugged gospel of "Shelter Me." "Somebody's Got to Go," originally by Lonnie Johnson, gets a crisp, frisky makeover, and even Buffalo Springfield's crusty "For What It's Worth" takes a swim in the muddy waters of Benoit's home state, with a little help of some altered, post-Katrina lyrics. The guitarist lets his Cajun influences fly on the bouncy rhythms of "Sac-Au-Lait Fishing," the album's only original, and shifts into pleading Otis Redding mode for the aching blues ballad "I'm Guilty of Lovin' You." The Chicago-by-way-of-the-Delta shuffle of "One Foot in the Bayou" is also an apt description of Benoit's approach. He touches on a variety of Americana styles, yet always keeps part of himself planted firmly in the wetlands of his roots. --Hal Horowitz

I never worry when I buy a Tab Benoit CD because his material is consistently good and his style doesn't change much over time. He is a superb rhythm guitarist and songwriter and a great live performer. His Louisiana style of blues is on display again with Power of the Pontchartrain. Besides the title cut, my favorite tune is Sac-Au-Lait Fishing, which makes you want to get up and dance. I also like One Foot in the Bayou. All in all, a great CD if you like a New Orleans style blues band.

Quartet expands upon the "dream pairing" - begun by guitarist Pat Metheny and pianist Brad Mehldau on their 2006 Nonesuch collaboration, Metheny/Mehldau. This time they incorporate the members of Mehldau's trio, bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jeff Ballard, into a breathtakingly eclectic set, which ranges from the airy, pastoral "Don't Wait" to straight-up rocking in the slowly building "Towards the Light." Last year, London's Evening Standard described Metheny and Mehldau as "graceful, lyrical improvisers...It's a duo performance that deserves to tour." Now the pair is indeed hitting the road, along with Mehldau's two band-mates, in March for a month of shows throughout North America in support of Quartet. The 11 tracks that comprise Quartet were cut during the week-length December 2005 session at Manhattan's Right Track that yielded Metheny /Mehldau, a recording date that, over time, will surely be considered a landmark in contemporary jazz. On Quartet, each artist contributes original solo compositions as well as their first co-written piece, "A Night Away." The group also reworks Mehldau's "Fear and Trembling," which originally appeared on House On Hill, Mehldau's final outing with his previous trio lineup. It also interprets Metheny's "Marta's Theme," from his score to the 1998 Italian film, A Passage to Paradise. Quartet is perhaps even more adventurous and just as rewarding as their first release; the exhilarating back and forth between Metheny and Mehldau continues with their eagerly awaited live dates.

This is really a revelation of sorts, beautifully produced new-age jazz by Pat Metheny. I had liked some of his earlier efforts and lost patience after a while but he has managed to renew his approach quite a bit. The music is sonically perfect and the whole disc is exceptional not just one or two tracks, Beautiful. I may have to buy the first one also.

a musical delicacy of cold cut jazz. well balanced between slow and mellow songs and more upbeat numbers that simply jazzles your mind.
one down side, some of the numbers are to short, leave you wanting for more, well the whole cd creates this entire empty space that craves more of that jazzy jazz; some of the songs has the beautiful, slow evolution from downbeat tempo but every melodious moving toward some really funky stuff (not as in funk but funky as in phat)but ending all too soon.

Mehldau and Metheney have collaborated such that their work on this cd is continuous with their previous but separate efforts while still being a creative and enjoyable work. Most of the tracks have, as their foundation, Mehldau's incredible sense of balance between the complex and the simple. Mehldau's sense of when and how to fill--and not fill--in the spaces continues to be an incredible strength of his approach. Metheney's contribution is to ride this gentle wave with his usual mix of engaging accessibility. Metheny's use of a synthesizer effect allows him to explore two of the tunes more freely which provides the most satisfying tracks on the album (5 & 9). What the album lacks in explosiveness (check out Mehldau's version of "Solar" on the album Art of the Trio Vol IV) it makes up in subtle inventiveness.

"Recorded in the same all-originals sessions as last October's Metheny / Mehldau collaborative debut from guitarist Pat Metheny and pianist Brad Mehldau, "Quartet" picks up where the first disc left off, albeit on a slightly quieter note. While Metheny / Mehldau focused on the duo chemistry of the co-leaders (only two of 10 tracks featured Mehldau's trio teammates, bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jeff Ballard), the new set tips the scales in favor of the foursome (seven of 11). Again, simpatico chemistry is on exhibit as Metheny and Mehldau converse with intuitive sensitivity on such passionate dialogues as "Long Before," "So Much Music in the Air" and "Sound of Water," the last of which an impressionistic beauty graced by Metheny's 42-string guitar. This is the eagerly awaited sequel to an album that exposed an unexpectedly deep empathy between two very different jazz stars last year. Metheny-Mehldau.......2007-05-26

Pat Metheny is one of my favorite artists of all time. I really admire his song writing and his whole approach to music. Brad Mehldau is also another favorite of mine. Both men are modern players who are quite unlike anyone before them, but are still very down to earth. Their playing in straight ahead situations is exceptional, and when they push the envelope, the outcome can be very rewarding, or not so memorable.

I first heard about their first collaboration when it came out. Considering these two artists are my favorite current musicians on their instrument, I was excited. I was a little skeptical with the abscence of bass and drums, so I didn't buy it. When I saw that a new collaboration called Quartet came out, obviously including Mehldau's trio with Larry Grenadier and Jeff Ballard, (also two of my favorites) I when out and bought this.

I expected that modern folky loose and unrestricted sound that Metheny gets on his trio albums, and other collaboration efforts, and the way Mehldau sounds on his trio recordings. With the first track, I was awarded this. The first track is what I expected. A great melody with a nice rhythm and great improvisations. I didn't stay too interested as the cd progressed.

My first problem is why would they call this album Metheny Mehldau Quartet when bass and drums are missing on almost half of the selections?!

Some of Metheny's albums that I've come to love, I wasn't to hip to when I first heard them; example Metheny & Scofield's I Can See Your House From Here, and Pat's Trio 99-00. I guess this is going to be the case with this album. I gave this cd about three or four listens so far, and I'm about to go turn it on again after I write this.

The last few times I heard it, I just felt the music was just falling back into some dreary uninspired music. With the exception of the first track, I wasn't hearing real beautiful melodies, and the quartet wasn't well represented. I'm not going to make any final statements about this cd yet. And if the Metheny Mehldau Quartet was in town, I'd definately go see them.

I hope they make another one and do some of Metheny's old compositions like Are You Going With Me, Unity Village, James, Go Get It, Travels, Have You Heard, etc...

Ry Cooder's name has helped bring attention to this session, but it's the veteran Cuban son musicians who make this album really special. Reminiscent of Ellington in its scope and sense of hushed romanticism, Buena Vista Social Club is that rare meld of quietude and intensity; while the players sound laid-back, they're putting forth very alive music, a reminder that aging doesn't mean taking to bed. Barbarito Torres's laoud solo on "El Cuarto de Tula" is both more blinding and more tasteful than any guitar showcase on any recent rock album; a quote from "Stormy Weather" and some very distinct parallels to Hawaiian styles remind us of why it's called "world music." --Rickey Wright

Nice cuban music.......2007-03-15

I have had this album a number of years, and my enthusiasm is not quite as great as many of the viewers here, because although it is generally pleasant listening, I don't think there are really any outstanding tracks or personal favorites on here.

I should add that I speak Spanish fairly well and therefore understand the lyrics, and am generally an enthusiast of Hispanic culture and music. The story of this worthy project and how this was recorded are interesting and I suspect some reviewers are moved more by sentiment than just on the merits of the music, some of which seems very middle-of-the-road to me, albeit pleasant enough for casual listening.

Ry Cooder did a good thing reassembling these wonderfully talented and forgotten stars of another period. Great album, wish it was a double, triple, a collection. I would buy it. Can't replace these icons of another era and their sound will be gone with them.

All done in Spainish, this excellent CD has a book included with translations and facts about the players. The music here oozes with atmosphere, taking you to the heart of Cuba. First rate musicianship and great songs all the way through. Ry leaves the vocals to various others, but his guitar work is unmistakably present. A good veiw indeed!

For those of you who are fans of the Buena Vista Social Club already, this is the masterpiece. A culmination of talented musicians, soul, love, and sultry afternoons with a cool drink getting ready to kick on into the night!

For those of you who have never listened to this style of music, don't just listen to it once as you could compare it to the first 3 olives you have ever eaten.

The first one shocks your taste with a layered complexity that is both sharp and mellow, leaving you with a look on your face that says "what just happened?".

The second takes you back to the memory of your first taste, and enjoying re-living the sensation, you start looking for more.

The third confirms your interests and instils an infatuation with something unique, powerful, and good for the heart and soul, that will be played over and over again.

It seems to suit almost any mood and simply nourishes the soul. I highly recommend for anyone who enjoys good music--you don't even need to be a fan of Cuban music. I certainly am not well versed in Latin music, but am a definite fan of this album!

I read another review that pretty much hit the mark. If you are not real heavy into SRV, this is a great CD to have. It has all his stuff you've heard on the radio plus a few other tasty cuts. On the other hand, there are a lot of really smokin tunes that are missing from this short collection. It's like a teaser - when it's over, you'll wish there was a disc number two.

Okay, if you're starting a fan off, you'd want them to hear examples of Stevie's stunning guitar. Makes sense, right? That's the guy's claim to fame, after all. And yet they miss out on a few of his best solos. Where's Rivera Paradise? Where's Lenny? Where's Things (That) I Used to Do? Wheres Ain't Gone 'n' Give Up on Love? Love Struck Baby? Testify? Wall of Denial? Let Me Love You Baby? Or, if you want a bit of acoustic SRV, how about Life By the Drop? If you're looking for just Stevie's best known songs, this does contain Texas Flood, Pride and Joy, Couldn't Stand the Weather, Cold Shot, Life Without You and the cover of Little Wing. But this was a blown opprotunity to present the definitive Stevie Ray Vaughan overview. Stick to Essential if you're a newcomer, since it contains most of this album plus most the above tracks.

Not the best "Greatest Hits" album for SRV.......2007-03-02

Was a fan for many years of this man, and was extremely devastated upon his sudden death in the mid eighties. An artist such as SRV has many great songs as well as lesser-known gems. I like the songs on this album but the bad thing is that it is not remastered. For the money you cannot go wrong, but for a little more you can get a better compilation than this one, which came out in 1995. Groovy sounds and of course the Blues mystique is what you get here. Features hits like Taxman and one of my favorites in "Couldn't stand the weather". If you can pick up the 2002 release "The Essential Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble" then that is a better purchase in my opinion. Other great songs include "Pride and Joy" and the fun rocker "The House is rockin". The best thing for this artist would be to present fans with a boxed set that included all of the singles as well as some live performances. If you are new to SRV then this is not a bad place to start.

Of course with any Greatest Hits compilation by any artist, people are going to fuss about songs left out and/or included. I think everyone will agree that every song on here deserves its place, though personally I think that omitting "Look at Little Sister" and "Love Struck Baby" leaves a big vacuum. Still, this CD does what it intends to do: showcases the absolutely uncanny talent of SRV. The man plays with more than just a feel for the guitar, he plays like he's channeling a higher spirit. All you have to do is take one listen to "Little Wing" where he fleshes out the Hendrix' tune, runs with it, and makes it his own.
I'd recommend this CD to someone who isn't all that familiar with SRV and wants to just jump in where the waters fine, or to anyone who wants a plum (tho compact) compilation. (Another plus is the pamphlet which gives great insight to each song by those who know.)
