Dave Tucker's newest recording "Meadow Lark" includes a great mix of classic and modern-era ragtime, Harlem Stride and other examples of early jazz piano music. Some early stride classics by James P Johnson are performed with great excitement. Dave's passion for his music shows in his recordings of classic ragtime pieces by Joseph Lamb, Galen Wilkes, Max Morath, William Bolcom and many others. Some rapid-tempo rags such as Harlem Strut, Dizzy Fingers, 12th Street Rag Medley, are played with huge intensity. Dave's piano playing is often described using the terms "passion", "emotional", "great touch", "feeling" and "exciting". Many different styles of early jazz piano solos are represented here by this versatile performer.

The CD case includes a 6-page insert. The CD itself consists of a new-style disk having a vinyl upper-cover with real grooves in it making it appear to be a vinyl record...but it works perfectly fine in your CD player.

      Although I purchased this CD to obtain the relatively rare Ragtime tune, "Meadow Lark", I found the rest of the CD to be very entertaining.

      Another winner from Dave Tucker. This cd contains great renditions of early stride, classic ragtime, and modern rags. This is a "must have for ragtime fans." Dave Tucker should be considered among the best players of this style, along with Reginald Robinson, Dick Zimmerman, and John Arpin. My favorites include, "Mule Walk, Dizzy Fingers, Meadowlark, Alaskan Rag, and Carolina Shout." This recording was worth the wait.

          Anne Sofie Von Otter is a born singer of songs, and this collection of Swedish miniatures dating from about 1910 to the 1950s are easy to relate to both in their Romanticism and the direct, unaffected manner in which the fine mezzo puts each across. In Ture Rangström's "En gammal dansrytm" (Old Dance), she uncharacteristically slides into the song in a sultry fashion; it makes you sit up and listen. She rarely brings any darkness into her tone. In keeping with the CD's title, we get soft, Northern light in both her tone and pianist Bengt Forsberg's--and by so avoiding any false sense of drama, each song's subject, particularly the ones about nature are, well, natural. But when something else is called for, as in Bo Linde's "Är jag intill döden trött" ("I Am Tired to Death"), von Otter knows how to emphasize the text amost conversationally. This lovely collection of pastels occasionally threatens to evaporate, but close attention reveal true delights. The mezzo is in fine voice, with no "opera diva" behavior to get in the way of the songs' charms. A specialized collection, perhaps, but one which reaps fine rewards. --Robert Levine
