Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
More than any other singer, Jon Lucien captures the essence of romance. His voice is rich and expressive, his best songs are perceptive poetic tales of devotion, trust, hope, harmony and spirituality. Three dimensional parables of love lost and love found and relationships filled with the promise of a new day. He seems to possess an innate ability to evoke an atmosphere and create images not only through his lyrics but the colors of his music.
In the 28 years since the release of his debut album, connoisseurs and assorted in-the-know types have spoken his name with the utmost hushed reverence. His seamless melding of jazz, R&B, Caribbean rhythms and Brazilian music proved to be a decisive early influence on what would be simplified and marketed as the twin formats of "quiet storm" and "smooth jazz," although very few artists working in either format approach Lucien's level of artistry or innovation, not to mention originality.
That last quality owes a lot to his Caribbean background, having been born on the island of Tortola in 1942, and raised in St. Thomas by a guitar-playing dad and greatly inspired by Nat "King" Cole. Arriving in New York by the mid-60s, he set about sharing the music in his head with the world at large. His 1970 RCA debut, I Am Now, was a formative step in the direction for which he would subsequently be known, presenting him as a romantic crooner with an exotic accent, but sticking largely to string-laden easy-listening arrangements. By the release of his second album, Rashida, in 1973, he had arrived at his artistic cruising speed, creating a style of R&B where the "B" stood more for bossa nova than blues, with languid samba rhythms, understated nylon-string acoustic guitar, fluid bass lines and his trademark unique scatting, occasionally eschewing lyrics altogether. This approach yielded a number of classic cuts like "Would You Believe In Me," "Lady Love" and the title track, which all found a home on the airwaves in those waning days of progressive FM.
For the follow up, 1974's Mind's Eye, Lucien and producer Dave Grusin crafted an album that fulfilled and expanded upon Rashida's promise, a scintillating song cycle combining the diverse sources of Lucien's inspiration in a seamless manner. Unfortunately, this album would mark the beginning of Lucien's rather adversarial relationship with the music business establishment, with tracks like "Listen Love" and "World Of Joy" being considered too hard to pigeonhole for any one radio format.
A move to CBS the following year yielded Song For My Lady, an effort to reach the broader audiences that had proven elusive to his previous RCA efforts. Recorded with an array of studio session heavy-hitters, Song fared somewhat better, with "Creole Lady" receiving significant air play on the AC format of the era, although still falling a bit short of making Lucien a household name. The album remains, however, fondly remembered by all who've heard it, as does its 1976 follow up, Premonition, featuring such evergreen favorites as "Laura" and "Hello Like Before" with a similar stellar session lineup. After two albums, however, it became increasingly apparent that CBS scarcely understood Lucien's music and where he was trying to go with it better than RCA, especially with the disco onslaught then beginning to take place.
Feeling a tad disillusioned that music as easily likable as his should experience such difficulties gaining a wider and wider audience, Lucien stopped recording for a while and was not heard from again until the release of 1991's Listen Love on Mercury, followed by 1993's Mother Nature's Son. Both albums went a long way toward refreshing his original fans' memories of his unique artistry, picking up some new ones along the way as well. Jon explains, "Wherever I perform, I hear all the time, I'm 18, I'm 19, but my mom turned me on to your music when I was 10, and this is the first chance I got to see you.' "

The line between a genious solo-artist and a ego-centric maniac is very thin. It is clearly subjective. For me it entirely depends on whether I like the artist (Michael Brecker) or not (Mainieri). This album passes the test, also because of great drumming, but it is not a 5 like other Brecker CDs
if you don't have this disc, GET IT!!!!!!.......2001-05-15
This is absolutely my favorite disc in my entire collection. I borrowed it from a friend first, kept it for a year, and finally found a copy of it for myself. Every time I listen to it, I hear something I haven't heard before. Make sure you listen to "In a Sentimental Mood" a bunch of times! It made me cry the first few, Mike Brecker is such a musical god.
If you are a jazz player, don't miss this!!!!!
1985 at the "Bottom Line".......1999-11-01
The fact that this cd was produced in 1994 as the result of "Steps Ahead" fans wanting to hear recordings from their concert tour in 1985, expresses just how special the performances of this particular group really were. I was fortunate to have caught the group at the "Bottom Line" in NYC. Michael Brecker, Mike Mainieri, Daryl Jones, Mike Stern and Steve Smith were really cookin'!
For those of you who know and love this band.................1999-09-14
My favorite album by these guys was Magnetic, a highly rocking album , by jazz standards. The only thing missing on the studio album was guitar, so to speak. Not a problem, add Mike Stern. This disc, answers THAT musical question in SPADES. This is one moving album, both tastefully and tempo-wise. You can't get "Magnetic" anymore, so get this. Email me if you hate it, I'll buy it from you. Guaranteed. Greg Watkins gwat@flash.net

Incomplete.......2006-12-31
Johnny plays great he is a slide guitar master . This show he played each song for 20 minutes making extended jams out of them .The reason i want to only show 3 Stars is because Edgar opened this concert when i saw it in NYC and Jammed with Johnny at the end on Sax .It rained alot that day and there were flood conditions , edgar played Frankinstein for about half an hour . I'm going to check Edgars catalog and see if there are any live jams with Johnny . Edgar is Johnnys equal on Sax.
johnnys fall.......2006-04-13
after being absent for 3 years with no new material johnny put out a live album recorded in 1997, with his failing health and skills this was released for one reason and one reason only, money, no growling vocals, no fluid speedy solos, i cried when i heard this album, almost as bad as i am a bluesman.
If you love Johnny............2004-08-27
Then this is a killer CD. Johnny and his band simply rip it up here. Johnny shows that he's one of the best on this recording. Sadly, he's one of the "forgotten" guitar greats when it comes to naming some of the best. But players KNOW Johnny, like Rory Gallagher, is one of the players they listen to when wanting to hear the best stuff out there.
I don't know what the negative reviewers here are listening to this on but, the CD thunders through my sound system ( Klipsch ) relentlessly. It never lets up. Johnny was "on" for this recording and I, for one, am thrilled!
If you play guitar, LISTEN to this CD. Learn from one of the great legends. I saw Johnny play twice. I am thankful that I did.
I hope this day never comes but, when Johnny passes on, people will "rediscover" this great performer again. And just like Rory Gallagher, I will say "I've always listened to him!!"
This recording makes me feel like I am in a smoke filled bar with my mouth open in awe the whole time. I'm betting that everyone stayed right in their seats for this whole show.
Thanks Johnny for keeping the blues alive! Go Johnny Go!! :)
A fine latter-day live album with plenty of blues goodness.......2004-02-08
Containing no hits but a number of fan favorites and cover songs, "Live In NY '97" was assembled with the assistance of Johnny Winter's fanclub, offering excellent versions of blues and R&B numbers, several instrumentals, and some of Winter's best guitar playing since the early 70s.
Most of these songs, and the instrumental numbers as well, are relatively low key, and that's when Johnny Winter's prowess as a guitar player is most apparent. He barely ever resorts to "shredding" or generic rock n' roll riffing; instead he plays one economical yet soulful solo after another, like on his version of Freddie King's "Hideaway", and a superb slide guitar intro to "The Sky Is Crying".
Those two tracks, along with "The Sun Is Shining" and "Got My Mojo Working", are among the highlights here, but there are really no "lowlights"...Winter's vocals may not have the power of, say Elmore James' or Muddy Waters', but he fares alright, and this album features some of his best blues playing of the 90s. And even the less than original "Johnny Guitar" sounds pretty good, as does the swaggering R&B of "Just A Little Bit".
Only the predictable and repetitive "She Likes To Boogie Real Low" is a let-down; everything else is good, or even great.
johnny dissappoints with live album.......2003-09-30
the rumors of johnny winters failing health and diminished guitar playing skills hit you right in the face in a lackluster live album from the once fiery albino. his vocals a very lethargic and his guitar solos are quite a struggle for a man who use to breeze across the guitar neck. for a non musician this is a listenable album with some good arrangements of classic blues songs, but for anyone who grew up knowing the skills of this guitar legend, this album is a sobering slap in the face.

Customer Reviews:
Gee, what a fine band!.......1999-10-31
It's wonderful that the revival of swing has allowed new big bands again to find an audience and opportunities to perform. George Gee leads a 17-piece band based in New York which truly deserves more recognition than it has gotten. This is surprising since New York City used to be where you went to become famous, but this is probably the result of the shift in the entertainment industry to Los Angeles. More closely resembling a jazz band from the mid-fifties rather than from the heyday of swing in the forties, this is an exceptional band here performing live for an appreciative audience which doesn't get in the way of the music. The men play so well together that it's hard to single anyone out for particular praise; however, tenorman Lance Bryant and Irvin Stokes on trumpet should be mentioned. Vocalist Carla Cook is heard on a couple of tracks. Singing with hints of Dinah Washington and just a little of Sarah Vaughan, she needs to be featured more. And we definitely need to hear more from this band.
Excellent, danceable, Basie-Ellington type big-band sound.......1999-05-18
The sounds of George Gee's orchestra remind you a lot of the best traditions of big band greats like Count Basie and Duke Ellington. Almost all the tunes on the CD have an amazingly good arrangements. Excellent continuous medium-tempo beats that are great to dance to along with great improvisations by the brass section and piano.
Unlike the modern rock bands like Cherry Poppin' Daddy and Brian Setzer who just believe in pointlessly fast beats, this band's music seriously swings. There are smooth ups and downs and the tunes are a great pleasure to dance to. The band is even more fun in person. This is a definite MUST-HAVE if you're looking for a single CD with medium-paced tunes to Lindy Hop or swing to.
Excellent job, Mr. Gee and your orchestra. Its great to have a band like yours that keeps the dancers wanting for more, more, more!!
Swinging Danceable Big Band Jazz and Blues.......1998-12-21
Gee's CD recorded live at a New York Swing Dance Society Sunday Night Dance (in its 15th year of weekly dances) is the best danceable real jazz big band CD made in recent years. Do you think you know Shiny Stockings -- this CD has a special arrangement for Gee by Frank Foster who originally wrote the song for Count Basie. Plus original songs. You will listen to this and dance to it -- the only other recent swing CD's that is of this quality and style is Lavay Smith's. Both Lavay and Gee could be set back in the 30's and would pack people in.
Classic big band sound that really swings.......1998-11-28
George Gee is the darling of the NYC swing scene and this CD shows why. He sticks true to the classic big band sound without straying into ska or pop. Listening to "Swingin' Live!" you'd think he was one of the original swing giants of that era. Also, the songs on this CD are danceable and not insanely fast like that of some neo-swing bands out there.

this CD was advertised as a nora jones CD it is not, she is only on the first song. I was disapointed.
Got Live If You Want It!.......2002-12-12
To set the record straight both Malcolm Holcombe and Jesse Harris have had major label releases. The reviewer who claimed this was a collection of local artists was totally off base . This CD is filled with inspired performances. and the Norah Jones track is just stunning. Malcom shines like a rusty diamond - if you like Tom Waits and John Prine you'll love his work. Jesse Harris wrote five songs on Norah's Blue Note release and is featured singing tracks from his new release. The other artists also offer a glimpse into what a night at the Living Room is like. Buy this collection.
ALMOST AS GOOD AS BEING THERE!!!.......2002-11-17
WHAT A SOUND!! This CD sounds almost as new and fresh as being there.Norah Jones sounds live, indeed; not like most studio recordings. I've seen her at THE LIVINGROOM,so I know!! Jesse Harris also lays down some good tracks. OVERALL : An excellent and diverse selection of acoustic music. I'm looking forward to their next volume.
COOL COMPILATION.......2002-08-14
Neat to hear Norah before the hype.....I like this live version of Got To See You Again better than the studio one....I think her songwriter Jesse Harris is really good too...Totally worth my ten bucks.....
Disappointment.......2002-08-07
Norah sings only one song on this CD. The rest is an assortment of apparently local artists of varying talent. If you want to hear Norah, save your ten bucks for her next release!

Great stuff.......2007-05-13
Brooklyn based Israeli rocker, Yosi Piamenta, continues "building bridges" between peoples of different cultural backgrounds through the music of The "Heavenly Jams Band". Mr. Piamenta, who together with his brother Avi, are well known in world music circles as forever changing the face of popular religious Jewish music. Piamenta injects a wildly frenetic improvisational style of Oriental based spiritual music, to a scene usually associated with the traditional Klezmer sounds of Eastern European Jewery.
The Heavenly Jams Band is a loose collection of talented musicians with guitar virtuosos Yosi Piamenta (Piamenta Band) and Oteil Burbridge (Allman Brothers Band) as it's core. This CD documents the bands first show in June of 2004, featuring a great mix of rock classics and Oriental Hebrew music.
Songs are:
1.Cissy Strut - L. Nocentelli
2.Mitzvah - Yosi Piamenta
3.In Memory of Elizabeth Reed - R. Betts
4.Manic Depression - J. Hendrix
5.Agadelcha - Rabbi Ibin Ezra, c. 11th century

Hey man that's something else.......2004-07-04
It's the New York Dolls Live, what vcan I say. you're probably dead bored of hearing about the sound quality but it clears up a bit on Something Else. The only problems throughout the record his the guitars are buried by the rest of the band and everytime they do a "doo-doo dodoo" it's fuzzy louder than everything else.
Closest we'll ever get to a third album. i definately recommend this.
Hey a bit o trivia I think it was around '00/'01 when a record company offered Sylvain Sylvain 1 million dollars to do a New York Dolls reunion, his reply was "Hey I agreed to do one back in '84. The only one who won't do it is David."
Live Rock and Roll.......2002-06-07
The sound quality is lacking but the spirit of the music is fantastic rock and roll. If you can put up with Husker Du's "Land Speed Record," this should be a breeze. Sloppy but magnificent.
What might have been!!!.......2001-06-24
Listening to this disk will make any Dolls fan frustrated! This is the only known recording of several songs that would've made up the 3rd Dolls album (and did show up later on their solo LPs). The new songs are all awesome--but you cannot hear Johnny Thunders at all (this is a soundboard tape done in a small club, which means the vocals, drums and Syl's keyboards dominate the mix--the guitars blasted out thru the amps, meaning not on the recording). Yet another reason to hate Heroin, as Johnny and Jerry both walked out because they were being deprived of it while on tour before the band could record these gems. (Gawd, and I taught English at the very company that invented it, a hundred years after the fact, back in 1898... a year after they invented aspirin)(!))
For fans only.......2000-12-06
Since there was no official 3rd Dolls album this is the next best thing, as the first 7 songs were intended for the 3rd release, and this is the only known recording of them. The sound quality is'nt THAT bad, by bootleg standards anyway, and is certainly listenable. The rest of tracks are useless as better versions exist elsewhere, but definately worth getting for the first 7. The awesome cover photo alone is almost worth the price! Casual listeners be warned though, this one's for fans only.
Disappointing Souvenir.......2000-05-19
I would dearly love to recommend this album, having searched for it for ages as a kid--on vinyl, yet--but having obtained the CD version, I have to warn all Dolls fans the world over not to be terribly impressed with this one.
The performance sounds worthy--ditto for the new tracks--but the sound quality is atrocious. Usually I can take a spotty recording, especially depending on who the artist is. But posterity notwithstanding, even the five songs they recorded on Don Kirschner's 'Rock Concert' (Stranded..., Trash, Chatterbox, Don't Start Me Talkin', Personality Crisis) would have been better than this one.

You'll learn to love it.......2003-12-27
I purchased CD recently after seeing Canyon open for Jay Farrar. I enjoyed their live show and went against my usual "Live albums often disappoint" state of mind and gave it a listen. I had a hard time with the vocal for awhile, they were tough to get used to, but I put this disk in my car stereo with the windows down on a county road and it all came together. This is a beautiful piece of music that is calming and peaceful, I would even say it is up there with Luna's Live disk as one of my favorite live disk of the past few years.

Customer Reviews:
Top Notch Production.......2007-06-20
He's still got it!! Billy's voice is as sharp and clear as ever. I thought the live layoff would hurt, but it's clear to me that he has been working on his vocals...wow. This is a must have for Billy Joel fans.
It even includes Goodnight Saigon, which is impressive in itself. I appreciate that he continues to include this in his albums and tours. Thank you, Billy.
Japan edition same as US.......2006-07-12
Hi Boss Fan
Just to let you know that this Japan edition has exactly the same tracklisting as the US/UK one. It has 32 tracks including the 2 hidden ones on the domestic release. All that's different is that like all Japan CD's it will come with an additional lyric booklet. Still 5 stars for what is Billy's second greatest live album (after Songs In Attic).
Anybody???.......2006-06-13
I just got my copy of "12 Gardens," the U.S version of what I assume is this release. (My 5-star rating is based on the greatness of that release - see my review by going to that item if you are so inclined.) I have been waiting for a while now to see Amazon update this product with a list of songs or some info about what makes it different from the one released in the States. Judging by this albums fluxuating Amazon sales positions, at least a few people are buying this, so somebody please give me - US - the lowdown. If it is vastly different I would consider getting this version as well, but before I drop $50, I'd like to know what I'm getting. So, to Amazon and/or anyone who has got this release (its been out a few weeks now) - please give us an informative post. From one Joel fan to another, thanks.
*** (7/17/06) Hi There "Ramsey Hornsey,"
Thanks for the response! I'm glad I didn't go ahead and pay extra for the import version, since they are the same thing, yet that version is almost tripple the price. But you are right - this is a terrific live album. Billy's best of his 4 ("Songs in the Attic," "Kohuept," 2000 Years...," and now this"). There are better versions of some of these songs on the respective previous albums, but no live album from Billy has such a great sequencing of hits, fan favorites and rarities all in one as this; and many of the tracks here do trump - or are represented for the first time ever on an actual live album - 's previous Live releases. For specifics, see my review of the U.S. version (thanks to Ramsey Hornsey, I now know my review there applies to this version as well).
Just get it, people! You won't be disapointed.
