Customer Reviews:
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

The only one you need........2005-08-28
Not much to say about this compilation. All goth can be hit and miss, but this compilation is fair in content. Very different spectrums on this album. Most of the tracks are organic, which is whats wrong with all the other Unquiet Grave compilations. The newer the material, the more electronic and dissonant. Volume 1 has a very retro goth feel to it...like some of these songs could be pouring out of a dark, evil goth club in the heart of the city. I'm not going to review the material b/c I believe the style of music speaks for its self. I will say that if you are looking for variety, look no further. Bells, organs, guitars, sitars, harps, violins, synthesizers...all are present. Haunting female vocals, low thundering gothy male vocals...they are present too. Perfect music for a Halloween party being held in a dusty old mausoleum...Enjoy this compilation this coming fall...happy Samhain!
My First Goth CD..........2003-04-08
This was the first real goth cd I actually bought. I'd heard of a few of the bands on it from hanging around the Chamber and the Vault in Atlanta, but I'd never actually gone out and bought a CD like this one. I'm very glad I did! Previously, I had been into Type O Negative, KMFDM, Wumpscut, and the like, however this was an excellent choice to showcase more of the "pure" goth sound, instead of the industrial/metal point of view that I had previously enjoyed.
This CD had me at hello, with the poppy intro of "Eccentricity" by Magenta. I was certainly not expecting to hear something that sounded like it had crawled out of the 80's, however after 5 seconds I knew EXACTLY what gothic synthpop was. This song is truly a diamond in the rough. The next song, by "Slave" by Trance To The Sun is kind of whiny and freeform. Think of it as being the musical equivalent of one of those modern paintings...at least it makes sense to someone, right! After that comes "Vision in Black" by Advent Sleep. I like it when goth has organs in it, just because I like the sound of them, and if you're into the "organ" thing then you won't be disappointed here. Great song. Machine In The Garden offer up a great tune to keep the ball a rollin', and some really Ethereal stuff comes next (I'm not a big fan, but I really enjoy the selections here.) The next highlight here is Gossamer's "Run". Dark and dancable all in one. Definitely made for the clubs, and with amazing lyrics to boot. Jennifer Hope checks in somewhere in this part of the first disc too, her song, "The Sky Is Blushing" is amazing. "The Sky Is Blushing" is a must have for long airplane rides, looking out over the clouds and listening to this song is an unreal experience, if you don't believe in God, you probably will after you try this. Moving right along, the next selection worth mention is "My Sweet Nothing" by Second Skin. This song is simply amazing. Move over Andrew Lloyd Webber, because Second Skin just wrote a new ending for Phantom of the Opera! "Do You Believe In Angles" by The Last Dance is the next song. This song has amazing lyrics and a dancy beat. This is probably the closest to happy goth you'll ever get, and the guitars are a nice touch here, too.
The second disc begins with a song by Rhea's Obsession called "When I Was In My Prime". In all honestly, I haven't listened to this song all the way through in the 2 years I've owned the disc, so I can't really say much about it. I've listened to the intro a few times though, and they did a great job with that. "Crucifixion" by Spiritual Bats is an interesting track. It's kind of similar to the Advent Sleep track on disc one, but the singer has some kind of an accent. It could be spanish or european, I'm not sure, but it's a nice touch to a great song. "Restraining Order" by [someone] Williams comes next, it's only a minute or so long, and this is one of the only weak points on the album. This guy sounds like he's begging the gothic crowd to tell him he has a good voice. Anyway, next is Android Lust. She is simply amazing. This is a very very hard dance track with a melody that sounds like the song from "Unsolved Mysteries", only alot more spooky. If you're into cyberpunkish type of stuff this is right up your alley, definitely one of the high points of the record. The next honorable mention is "Il Regno Del Vento" by Burning Gates zips right along, and the next goodie is "Butterfly" by Tapping The Vein. Intersting lyrics and incredibly strong female vox give this dark grunge band a well earned spot on this disc's roster. Diary of Dreams show up with "You -Das You", a dancy track with some good mixing of instruments and great vocals. Bella Morte have an organ laden somber dance romp with "Funeral Night", which is another highlight of the CD. Bella Morte is definetly going places. The only problem with this track is the consistent use of a cowbell, but you only really notice it until you've listened to the song 1000 times like I have. Some instrumental Lycia-ish thing closes out the record, and is, again, a song I haven't listened to all the way through yet.
The bottom line is: Get this CD! I got it at Newbury Comics in Boston for 7 bucks. You can't beat that. It's priced very well, and well worth the price. This is a great who's who (also a great what's what if you're a newbie like I was) of gothic/darkwave/and ethereal music. This opened some new doors for me musically, and I'm definitely glad I took a chance on it!
Yes!.......2003-01-03
wanting to listen to something different from my usual extreme metal tastes, i tried this album out of pure curiosity. a double album for 11$ so there's nothing much to lose here. with that in mind, i pushed the play button. a couple of hours later came the verdict (please check the rating). I barely know about no more than 2 bands out of the 32 featured on this compilation but at least 20 of them can make some really awesome music; a quite high "quality material" ratio for a compilation. this is goth, alright, but it might be closer to a blend of dark pop and techno then to the usual "Gothic" flavor of Type o negative and the likes but still this is an essentially dark music playing here and it's sure to satisfy any gloomy-minded sicko like me.
Unquiet Grave.......2002-11-20
The CDs are both quite diverse in the music they present, but lack a certain something. Call it consistency, call it progession from one track to the next, I can't quite place it, but something came up missing for me. While some of the tracks are very, VERY good, those that are not worth the time aren't quite paid for by those that are.
Alright, Cleopatra - you NAILED it with this one.......2002-02-01
One of the best dark music samplers of the year. The low price almost seems like a mistake, but it's a terrific deal. This comp will probably jump-start three or four of the bands featured. All in a slipcase that's the same size as a regular CD (I LOVE convenient packaging!)
Instead of using up all the good songs halfway through disc 1, they're well spaced. Magenta's "Eccentricity" opens the comp with a gothed-out ABBA sound. Trance to The Sun follows up with "Slave," which sounds like Lycia doing heavy metal. Advent Sleep approaches "overgoth" with "Vision in Black." Nearly all the songs are catchy enough that you can remember them a week later. Other standouts include Black Atmosphere's semi-goofy "Love Lies Bleeding (Part Two)."
It gets ethereal with Stone 588's "Mundus Vult Decipi," Ctrl's head-scratcher "Lioc," and Jennifer Hope's gentle "The Sky is Blushing." (She's not a great singer yet, but there's a sweet innocence to her sound.) Gossamer's Depeche Mode-ish "Run (Wayne Hussey Mix)" is a deathpop gem. Brave move not to open the album with this track. Every Wiccan ceremony should start with the harpsichord beauty of Autumn Tears' "This, My Melancholic Masquerade." Second Skin's rocker "Sweet Nothing" sounds like Fields of The Nephilim. The Last Dance's "Do You Believe in Angels" is like Gossamer's "Run," but about 5% cheesier. The Unquiet Void's "Breathing Liquid Breath" is watery and cavernous; it would have fit perfectly on Lycia's "Ionia."
Rhea's Obsession starts disc 2 with the metal guitar ballad "When I Was in My Prime." Spiritual Bats' "Crucifixion" is officially "overgoth." Android Lust's "Heathen (A Thousand Thoughts)" is a perfect blend of scary whispered vocals, cinematic keyboards and a hard dance beat. Italian band Burning Gates' "Il Regno del Vento" is Nephilim with a side of marinara sauce. Soon after that comes one of the best songs:
"Butterfly." Tapping The Vein tricks you with a Switchblade Symphony-style opening, then punches you right in the face with an intense, shrieking heavy metal chorus. Just awesome. Funeral in Berlin has an echoey, mellow goth feel on "Suspense." If The Police had done a goth tune, you'd have Written in Ashes' "Nightfeast." Alchemia's "An Explained World" closes disc 2 much like "Breathing Liquid Breath," like fog moving over heated water.
When Cleopatra gets it right, you get samplers like this one or "The Black Bible." Two more Unquiet Grave sets have come out, but this one is still the best.

Another good deal with a broader range of styles.......2002-02-02
For this second "Grave," they build on the success of the first one by keeping the same crazy-[low] price and switching the lineup. Some tracks, like The Cruxshadows' "Marilyn, My Bitterness V2.0" straddle goth, techno and 80s new wave all at once.
The Moors' slavic chant "Dve Nevesti" is ominously catchy. Mors Syphilitica's opera-goth ("Ungrateful Girl") is as amazing as ever. Necromantik Sunshine's "Necromantic Sunshine" (hmmm, their first song?) has a seedy, dancefloor Christian Death
appeal. The next few songs are more forgettable, more electronic. Uva Ursi does Gitane Demone & Eva O proud with the strange "Waltz of Maldoror." Doppelganger's "Mad Sky" sounds like a grrrl band doing the soundtrack for the 70s cartoon "The Groovie Ghoulies." If you've seen "Blazing Saddles," you know EXACTLY what I mean by this: Flesh for Eve's "The Witch" sounds like Madeline Kahn's "I'm So Tired."
The vocals are buried on several tracks - usually meaning there wasn't much time or money to record the songs. Perfectly understandable for bands just starting out.
Disc 2 features more industrial and EBM than the first. A lot of the songs ("Televisual," "Listen," "Fallen Angel,") remind me of stuff we heard in the mid-to-late 80s when electronic music was starting to bleed away from Kraftwerk and Joy Division. Other tracks fit the Front Line Assembly/Front 242 mold, like Pulcher Femina's "Scream & Die." and Cydonia's "Ritual." The EBM songs indicate the enduring influence of disco. Unit 187's "Capital Punishment (MM6 Remix)" is a righteous shot of drum n' bass with speed metal guitar. X-axis closes the sampler strong with "Occident," a driving techno anthem with Human League-ish vocals.
I would've given it five stars, but I'm more into the overall goth/darkwave sound of the first collection. If you're more open-minded and dance-oriented, you will definitely dig this "Grave."
Had to mention Matrix.......2001-08-12
my review was mainly to point out a great song on disc 2 that failed to get mentioned previously. while the rest mentioned are good, i find the best song to be Matrix's Dreams are Real. I have since searched for other music by this band. It is compilations like this that make great bands like Matrix rise to the occasion.
An affordable cross-section of the dark underground.......2000-08-28
Fortunately the first Unquiet Grave release warranted a sequel, this time with EBM and Industrial thrown into the mix. Like the first, there's much good, bad and in-between among the 33 tracks, but all in all it's definitely worth the low price tag.
The standouts on the first CD (the goth/darkwave/ethereal part) include Mors Syphilitica's operatic goth on "Ungrateful Girl", Cruxshadows' infectious dance floor groove "Marilyn, My Bitterness V2.0", Immortalis Amor's ethereal techno of "Invocation", and Klang Abstrakt's soundtrack intrumental "Memories".
The second CD's (the EBM/industrial part) highlights are TNV's catchy industrial offering "Televisual", Hocico's ominous, FLA-like "Banished", Pulcher Femina's driving EBM on "Scream", Angels and Agony's goth dance on "One", and Cruciform Injection's beat candy "Embryonic Testaments". Much of this disc would could be played on your local club's industrial night.
With an overall movement more into electronic territory, this installment is better suited to the more beat-friendly rather than those looking for more of the slower ethereal/darkwave variety. But once again, a great way to explore the (presently) unknowns of the genre.
IF YOU LIKE GOTHIC ETC... YOU SHOULD LIKE THIS.......2000-07-21
This CD is really amazing, it is a compilation of a number of relatively unknown artists who deserve exposure. While not every song is wonderful the CD ,as a whole, is. The gothic genre it is hard to explain because it encompasses many different types of bands and sounds. Some songs are more "ethereal" while others are more hard-edged, so there is something for every taste. It is a treat to listen to because each song is original; it isn't victim to the pitfall that many single band CDs are, that is, no song sounds much like any of the others on the CD.
Buy this!.......2000-07-07
A friend of mine bought this cd and played a few songs for me. Thats when I knew I had to have it. Its a mixture of dark voices, and good techno. This is a must have cd for anyones gothic collection, its addictive. Listen to Cruxshadows "Marilyn my bitterness" and you'll see what I mean.

The Best.......2005-08-22
This is my favorite volume of this compliation set. All of these are very good to me. But I'd definitely say to listen to this one last, as the others will probably be disappointing if you hear the best first. Great CD.
Good price, fair music, one great rare remix.......2003-06-14
I had to ask Voltaire himself where to find the Heavy Drama mix of The Man Upstairs and he directed me here. The Heavy Drama mix is catchier and better suited for clubbing than his typical accoustic style. Just don't take him too seriously and you'll be okay. I'm just crazy like this, but I bought this collection for that one song.
Other than Voltaire, his is a good two disk collection of underground goth and features a wider variety than previous compilations in this series. If you're looking to expand your library in a safe and economical way, compilation disks are the way to do it, and this has something for everybody, although few people will enjoy the entire collection.
These 2 CDs.......2002-06-14
when i listen to these cd's,well, they make me touch myself.
Three stars for content, four stars for price.......2002-02-02
This third collection features more unsigned bands than than the prior two. I'm not slamming DIY; I just didn't enjoy these songs as much. The song selection is handled by different people than on "Graves" I and II (Spahn Ranch's Athan Maroulis). Since some of these songs are on MP3; GO AND LISTEN TO THEM FIRST. (I grabbed it at first sight and ran to the register like the lab rat I am.) After all, this sampler costs five bucks more than the previous two did. Maybe it's for the gatefold packaging.
Disc 1 has some highlights. Cleopatra uses the old trick of starting with a popular single (Voltaire's "The Man Upstairs (Heavy Drama Mix)." Many of the songs are goth-aimed, but they go overboard with mournful, untrained vocals and synth drums. I know I sound like a crotchety old-schooler, but I just turned 31. 3SKS wins for sheer guts on "Mendocino Girl"; "Time After Time" is still Cyndi Lauper's song even if you leave out the chorus. This Ascension ("Mysterium") is always a welcome addition. Paralysed Age's "Famine" sounds like Peter Murphy doing a Cure cover, so of course I liked it. Ocean 8 achieves a cool Cocteau Twins/Wendy & Lisa vibe with "Fireworks."
On Disc 2, Messy opens with a decent piece of jazz-goth ("Make You Believe"). The second disc is more EBM/industrial overall than the first. Skip five tracks, and Mindless Faith lays down a good beat with "All These Years." Skip five more tracks, and Grace Overthrone's "Fight" is the best song on either disc, a good mix of dancefloor industrial and metal guitar. Aenima's "Earthlore" has a world music-tinged Miranda Sex Garden appeal.
The first two collections spoiled me on this one. If you're big on discovering new music, this may work better for you. I'm just looking to spare you the ARRGGGHH! factor.
A Good Compilation.......2001-09-22
While I don't feel that this addition to the Unquiet Grave Series is as good as its predecessors it still comes out as a good compilation. It was nice to see that this time around they found acts from all over the world instead of just Europe and the U.S. For any fans of Voltaire the first disc alone is worth the small price. I never thought I'd see the day that I'd hear a drum machine and synthesizers in a Volaire song. Freaky but good. But anyone interested in the underground goth rock, ethereal, industrial, or new to this compilation, black metal scenes should be pleased to find some great new bands on here.

This compilation of modern-day madrigals, the latest in a fascinating series of discs from the San Francisco-based all-male vocal group Chanticleer, won the Grammy for Best Small Ensemble Performance of 1999. The selections range over a variety of styles and aesthetics, from the haunting, hypnotic sounds of Steven Stucky's Cradle Songs to the archaic, ethereal beauty and Eastern inflections of John Tavener's "Village Wedding." There are the soft (and somewhat affected) asperities of Bernard Rands' Canti d'Amor as well as the gentle, almost English pastoralism of Zhou Long's "Words of the Sun" (beautiful!) and the colorfully exotic Orientalism of Chen Yi's Tang Poems. Other examples of the wide range here are the self-conscious busywork of Augusta Read Thomas's Love Songs to the darkly lush, 12-part weave of Steven Sametz's "In Time Of," with its radiant climax and pulsating chordal sonorites like the tolling of bells. All of this Chanticleer sings with striking freshness and commitment, virtuosic to a fare-thee-well, always sensitive to the emotional cues of the texts. The recording, made at Skywalker Ranch in January of 1999, is vivid and warm, and so is much of the music. Truly a winning disc. --Ted Libbey
Customer Reviews:
Transcendent Vocalism.......2005-01-31
This compilation is essential listening, especially (but not exclusively) for those already introduced to the marvels of Chanticleer. It features a wide variety of contemporary madrigals all dedicated to the theme of love. Gorgeous polyphony, entrancing dissonance; the music is very difficult, but Chanticleer's vocalism is exemplary, as always. The whole feel of the album takes some getting used to for the uninitiated. After a few listenings, though, one can fully perceive its unique and sublime beauty.
Highlights abound. The first three tracks, all lullabies by Steven Stucky, are brilliantly executed, but it is track four, Village Wedding by John Taverner, that first knocked my socks off. It seems to represent the absolutely ideal match between composer and performer, between written and sung text. It consists of a wonderful poem by Greek poet Angelos Sikelianos, with a recurring excerpt from the Eastern Orthodox wedding ceremony interspersed throughout. Taverner is himself a member of the Eastern Orthodox church, and the song is as much a spiritual experience as a musical one.
Another fantastic piece is Words of the Sun, by Chinese composer Zhou Long. It is probably the most accessible song on the CD, with numerous lovely subtleties and nuances that can be fully appreciated after multiple exposures.
Lastly, I'd like to express my sincere conviction that In Time Of (by Steven Sametz, set to a poem by E.E. Cummings) is the single most gorgeous piece of music I have ever had the great fortune to hear. The sonority is perfectly balanced, each arching phrase better than the one before. Please, for the sake of pure unadulterated beauty, purchase this CD. You will not regret it.
Beautifully delivered as always, but not my material........2002-07-30
I came to this album as a fan of Chanticleer more than of contemporary art music, though I like to think I do have a certain ear for the stuff. I haven't been educated in it, but I've sung some in my time in choruses, and I learned to appreciate those pieces the way that I learned to appreciate the more classical stuff as a child--by feeling it and hearing it come out of my own body, the ways that it worked, what was exciting, ect. That said, there is a point where I don't get it, and I reached that point all over this album. I thought I'd pass it on because it is hard for most of us to pick this kind of music off the shelf--there will be pieces that skewer us and some that make us fidget. For my part, I am grateful to have the album for the sake of three (long) songs. The Tavner Wedding song itself is probably worth it. But the album will never be put on leisurely.
Lives up to their reputation.......2001-03-07
Just recently had the opportunity to hear Chanticleer in concert...this CD certainly gives a cross section of their range...especially liked the "Tang Poems" and "Words of the Sun", which they performed live...very esoteric mix of musical styles...well worth the purchase for Chanticleer lovers!
One of the best I've picked up in ages.......2000-11-25
First of all let me state that the 4 stars isn't for the performance...which is truly outstanding...it is for a few pieces that are a tad sub-par. I also want to mention that its not that the pieces are modern either, I happen to be extremely sympathetic to modern music.
I usually don't like to do reviews this way, but I'm going to make a few comments piece by piece:
1) CRADLE SONGS - The first two of this trio of lullabies are great...the ones from Brazil & Poland are hauntingly beautiful...I'm not so crazy about the one from Tobago. A fairly strong piece, its certainly interesting.
2) VILLAGE WEDDING - This is one of the best three pieces on the album, and probably the best. Hearing John Tavener's work next to his contemporaries is an easy indicator of why he is considered one of this century's greatest and certainly one of the greatest living composers. Simultaneously it is joyous, austere, reverent & spiritual. Simply beautiful & amazing.
3) CANTI D'AMOUR - This is an up & down work. I'm not sure what the composer had in mind, but I find the first part to be amusing. It reminds me of barbershop quartet. It has more somber moments too that are quite moving. Overall though, its okay.
4) WORDS OF THE SUN - After the Tavener piece, this is my favorite one. I would like to hear some of Zhou Long's other works. It is a very subtle piece. Very Chinese too, yet simultaneously western. This is one of my favorite pieces by eastern composers of western music. Lyrically, it is amazing. Its borrowed from a 20th century Chinese poem that is gorgeous in English, I'm sure its even more so in Chinese. Musically, it is very stirring.
5) TANG POEMS - This piece too is written by a Chinese composer (Chen Yi) and it is distinctly Chinese. I am intrigued at some of the techniques used by the composer. I am really pleased with the piece, although I'm sure some find it a little "too eastern." It is extremely pretty if one is accustomed to eastern melodies. The 2nd part is a bit sharper and probably less accessible than the first part.
6) THE RUB OF LOVE - One of the duller pieces on the album.
7) IN TIME OF - Sublime. The opening few bars are unearthly. Definately one of the three best pieces. They definately need to keep this one in their concert repetoire (along with the Tavener and the two pieces by Chinese composers.) This is one of those works you have to hear to believe.
8) LOVE SONGS - This is a quirky collection of tunes by Augusta Read Thomas. It runs the gamut of serious to extremely silly. There are some strong points here, but some of it is too silly to stand the test of time ("Alas, The Love of Women"). Eventhough it is extremely unconventional, the part entitled "For Stony Limits Cannot Hold Love Out" is powerful. It is piercing & strange, but it really works with the text.
There are times when I love everything on this CD, and times when some of it gets on my nerves. It is, however, never boring and the performances are superb. I highly congratulate Chanticleer for not sitting on their laurels. This is adventursome stuff and it works 90% of the time, which is more than I can say for 99% of the ensembles out there.
I highly recommend this disc for "Village Wedding," "Words of the Sun," "In Time of," and "Tang Poems."
Pick it up, be adventuresome. Enjoy.
Fantastic recording of contemporary choral works.......2000-09-21
Chanticleer is one of the USA's finest choral ensembles, and they have picked a marvelous and diverse program for this recording -- with something that would appeal to absolutely everybody. The inclusion of two "husband-wife" pairs in the choice of music also makes for a special connection to the theme of the disc. Of special note to this reviewer are the "delicious" sonorities of Bernard Rands's "Canti d'Amor" and Augusta Read Thomas's "Love Songs" -- Chanticleer is a group who is able to pull off this difficult music beautifully. This recording was absolutely deserving of the Grammy that is received -- one of the finest discs of modern choral music in the past few years.

Product Description
Some of the rhythms developed through the present acoustical investigation could not be played by any living performer; but these highly engrossing rhythmical complexes could easily be cut on a player-piano roll. This would give a real reason for writing music specially for player-piano . . . Henry Cowell Like many composers of subsequent generations, Kyle Gann (born 1955) was captivated by Cowells theories and Nancarrows music. His book, The Music of Conlon Nancarrow, is the essential source for any serious study of Nancarrows work. Knowing so much about Nancarrows music, its hardly surprising that it would occur to Gann to consider the question of how he might make the mechanical piano his own. His answer is the music on this recording. The instrument isnt exactly the same. Nancarrow employed the old-fashioned player piano, driven by paper rolls with holes punched in them. Gann uses the more recent Disklavier, which is controlled by a computer via MIDI data. However, like Nancarrow, Gann employs the mechanical piano for both musical and practical reasons. The musical attraction, of course, is the one Cowell observed: The instrument allows the composer to compose with tempo relationships and rhythmic velocities not readily playable by human performers. The practical appeal is that Gann felt that not enough people were playing his music. So in the do-it-yourself spirit of Nancarrow, Lou Harrison, Harry Partch and so many other American composers, he decided to take matters into his own virtual hands. But although Ganns reasons for working with the mechanical piano are similar to Nancarrows, the musical results are quite different. Gann picks up where Nancarrow left off, developing his own personal methods of working with multiple tempo layers, and weaving elements of popular and classical music into his vivid and distinctive musical tapestries. Ganns music embraces a wide range of influences but sounds like no other. His fascination with complex tempo structures and microtonal tunings places him in the experimentalist tradition from Cowell to La Monte Young. Yet the directness and accessibility of his music reveal his affinity with American populists such as Roy Harris and Virgil Thomson. In this highly personal blend of experimentalism and populism, Ganns closest musical forebears are Partch and Charles Ives. In the spirit of Ives, Ganns music invokes ragtime, jazz, folk music and Native American music on equal footing with classical music and purely abstract sonic speculations.

Is Modernity over? the Disklavier will tell you.......2006-01-20
At the Alemeda Festival in the Eighties, after a concert with John Cage, a ticket holder went backstage, there was a question & answer period,"dear Mr. Cage, you know anyone can do what you do, pluck a string, tap the piano body, what makes your work so unique?. . ." Cage responded, " . . .
I do it and you don't " those that claim this is not music, nor interesting, arbitrary, boring,no high levels of craft engaged,of sophistication, uninteresting etc, should see that modernity is over,or simply we are still realizing aspects of modernity transcended in its former life, as Jameson says someplace, modernity is about fixing a time, temporality,so everyone's modernity begins at different times, for many the music of Phil Glass is the Year Zero for the history of music, anything prior is marginal in importance. I think Gann looks much deeper the trajectories within the history of music and tries to find useful interesting contexts for which to write music. For context, form and concept is really all we have.Adorno said someplace that "Form" is the true test of longevity in music, what we shape and how we think about what we shape and give form to, is all we have in the neo-liberal order; and Gann's pieces here prooves that the agenda for music creativity should simply proceed, proceeding, keeping going, has an "ethics" about it, surrounding the subject with conviction; Gann's music prooves the late Deleuze in some respects that without the aid, the comfort of the "grand narrative" all creators do now is attentuate "fragments, particles" from the lifeworld unpretenciously, and meaning relevance can be found anywhere. I think in much of the music that gets promoted many times the concept is stronger than the actual musical results, especially within the "complexity" cadre, where the music resembles an elaborate elegant dinner setting where the food never comes; but in Gann's case he is a sensitive musician always looking at the real time realization of what his music does.
Keyboard timbres, electric, clavichords, and Discklaviers re-tuned or otherwise has become a sort of a signature focus of his work. His use of farfisa organs in his Eighties music for example has a kind a cheapness to it,a particle timbre from the American lifeworld that has a fascination, like it is an integral part of the meaning of the landscape itself with "greasy-spoon diners",or secondhand gift stores, the homeless panhandlers On another level the poverty/hypocrisy of ideology in American entertainment is another fragment we live with and make music with everyday. The "real" is always simple just that unless it undergoes fetishization, and how can we live without the fetish of the object. But we have become fixed on myth in some respects the glorification of "junkspace" as Rem Koolhaas might say. Gann doesn't quite go full-tilt in that direction for his work does not relish in the commonplace, it merely suggests it;He does believe in the power still of the musical genre, its form and accessibility of the character pieces as retaining substance. The Discklavier is also an uncharted genre, Srockhausen's latter klavierstuck #15 and 16 make use of it as well, but beyond that Gann has discovered a useful space here.
I found these pieces quite with the landscape, perhaps these works are telling us that this is reality, democracy is here and now, there is no future, or if there is one well create it. Certainly the influence of Nanacarrow is prevalent here, the early music automata of the Player Piano, another quite useful invention for the American social lifeworld, it was the focus the center for family entertainment, as the sheets rolling from Tin Pan Alley, WEll, here Gann explores the landscape with his own personal blends of Southwest culture.
The best of intentions .......2006-01-06
It's nice to know that the composer is aware of all these wonderful techniques and methodologies, but making them sound like something requires a skill that is not evident here.
Profound, Accessible, Beautiful.......2005-08-01
For anyone interested in experiencing new musical pleasures, there is hardly a more appealing disc than this one, featuring 10 works for Disklavier. Kyle Gann is high on a short list of America's most significant--and most significantly undervalued composers. These extraordinary pieces ought to go a long way toward confirming Gann's place as an American original and one its finest composers. Understandably, much is made of Gann's extensive musical and academic background, but what sets his music apart is his innate talent, the strength of his ear, and the breadth of his musical imagination. Gann's seamless integration of popular and classical elements, together with his sense of humor make these pieces easy to hear, even by listeners who do not often encounter new music. But just beneath a veil of levity and accessibility are deep layers of complexities that make these pieces an ongoing joy for serious listeners. It's a disc that can be heard repeatedly with pleasure. These are works of probable historical importance by one of our best composers.
Wonderful!.......2005-07-28
For a supposedly avant-garde disc, this one's a lot of fun, though there are serious parts as well - in general the first half is fun, the second serious. The music is all for Disklavier, which is a modern-day player piano. Gann is author of a book on Conlon Nancarrow, the expat recluse who wrote tons of music for player piano, and he obviously learned a lot about the instrument from that experience. But while his music sounds like Nancarrow's in places, it is more melodic, more conventionally harmonic, more whimsical - and maybe even easier to listen to for people who find Nancarrow forbidding. The pieces are very diverse - there's a tango, a stride piano piece, a bebop piece, and a waltz, among other things, all made eccentric by having the melodies and accompaniments at different tempos. Sometimes Gann's sense of humor is remarkable, as in the piece (Petty Larceny) composed entirely of quotations from Beethoven sonatas, cleverly superimposed. The last piece, Unquiet Night, accounting for 16 out of 61 minutes, uses the sustain pedal all the way through, and is an impressionist blur of changing harmonies. There are many beautiful moments, many funny ones, and I think the disc could appeal to a lot of people not usually interested in modern music.
Abysmal.......2005-07-23
I was amazed that a great label like New World Records would release such a dreadful recording. This is one of those CDs that one would have hoped would never see the light of day---no such luck. What Mr. Gann has done here is work out a few (extremely dull) musical patterns, transferred them over to a computerized keyboard and then sped them up to make them sound important. If it were interesting music it would be one thing. It is, however, terrible music.(...)

Jason Wallach, aka The Unquiet Void, has created dark ambient, instrumental pieces to accompany the other-worldy aspect of H.P. Lovecraft s disturbing prose. The Shadow-Haunted Outside compositions were inspired by the stories The Dunwich Horror and The Whisper in Darkness and are brought to audio life through organic and non-organic means - synthesizers, tribal beats, and electronic loops of manipulated sounds.
