Amazon.com essential recording
For those music buyers who have enjoyed Barry White's music since the early 1970s but may not be devoted enough for the three-CD box set Just for You, this 20-track compilation brings together all of White's major chart hits between 1973 and 1979, along with a couple of entries from his Love Unlimited Orchestra. White's distinctive vocal style--a deep, resonant baritone-bass that oozes sex appeal--was the icing on the cake for those hits; superlative string arrangements (courtesy of the late Gene Page) encased White in a lush setting, while White's hand-picked rhythm section (which included many of Los Angeles's top session players) created a groove that was hard to beat. The combination was lethal: hits like "Never, Never Gonna Give You Up," "Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe," and "You're My First, My Last, My Everything" made White a chart staple and an early king of disco; his skill as a vocal interpreter was fully evident on a 1979 reading of Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are," another standout on this collection. On the evidence of that track alone, it's hard to believe that, according to legend, White never planned to be a recording artist in his own right and would have been happy to remain in the background as producer and songwriter! --David Nathan
Amazon.com
The most hot-buttered of all soul singers, Barry White is an artist whose CDs come with a purpose. To say what that purpose is, is not for a family Web site--but it involves that thing that Mommy and Daddy do at night with the bedroom door closed. All-Time Greatest Hits collects the essential White and Love Unlimited Orchestra tracks onto a packed CD. Are 20 cuts too much? Not with Viagra. That's a kind of medicine that grownups take. --Gavin McNett

If the one-disc All-Time Greatest Hits leaves you panting for more, but the three-disc box set Just for You proves that one can, in fact, get enough of Barry White's love, well, then the two-disc Ultimate Collection is the anthology for you. An entire slow-jams industry has been erected in White's wake, but no one has done it better. Call it "funkzac"--an inimitable fusion of lush strings and suave brass dancing on a bed of funk and disco rhythms, with the manly maestro mixed prominently atop his seduction soundscapes. Ultimate Collection serves up enough cherry Barry to produce another baby boom. --W.C. Sweeney
Customer Reviews:
I concur!.......2007-07-08
this is the best collection of his works, so many hits come at you. I did like the first disc better than his second in the set, but I'm sure when I revisit them they'll all grow on me too. =)
Barry White.......2007-07-08
Absoutely love this CD....so easy to listen to......I take it to work and listen to it all day......nice combination of music...the man can sing..
Barry White, The Ultimate Collection.......2007-07-05
Have to give 3 stars but to be fair it is based on what we thought we might be getting and selected the cd based on one song alone "Love is in the Air". We listened to the cd through to the end at one sitting and would consider it good background music for a gathering of friends but not something we would listen to again for mere enjoyment.
simple GREAT.......2007-05-23
This CD is simply GREAT. It brings me back to a time when you had to have talent to create music. It is why so many of his songs/music is sampled and reused!!! This is music at it's BEST.
A true Classic!.......2007-01-24
"The Ultimate Collection," is indeed a classic. Every track on this CD is great. Barry White's music never fails to please. Highly recommended.

Vanessa.......2007-05-06
Vanessa Williams has long been one of my favorite singers and entertainers out there and this compilation is a great example why. Featuring the now-classic pop ballad "Save The Best For Last" and the Oscar-winning "Colors Of The Wind" (which is my personal favorite on the album), among other hits, the album is an absolute winner. As for Vanessa herself, you just can't help but be captivated by her sheer beauty and talent (currently co-starring on "Betty"), I simply adore this woman. After all the turmoil she had to go through in the beginning of her career, she just started from scratch all over again and she did it in such an honorable way. She's a true role model - for everyone.
Good collection @}->---.......2006-02-11
I really like Vanessa Williams and over the years she has had a couple of big songs here and there. Some of the ones on this cd were never huge hits, but to her fans, we know them well. My personal favourites here are Betcha Never (a bit latin-ish and fun), Sweetest Days and Save The Best For Last. That song is now a bit of an anthem. She doesn't have the most powerful voice in the world, but it's pretty and her music is really beautiful. Maybe for fans only. I just wished she'd really come back with some new big hits.
Some very good, some less so.......2005-09-22
This CD has three great songs: Love Is, Save the Best for last, and Dreamin'. The rest of the songs are just OK. This is why it just doesn't pay to buy CD's. I can't recommend purchasing the whole CD just for three songs.
Just OK.......2005-08-18
I bought this CD in order to get a few of the "big hits," and that's what I got--no more, no less, as most of the other songs are just so-so.
LOVE IT!!.......2005-08-10
I grew up during the 80s and I am a big fan, so I enjoyed each song in this CD

Now that it's become mainstream, there's a lot of quality R&B around, but it's not until you go back and listen to veterans like the Gap Band that you realize what modern soul is often missing: raw funk. This collection includes some of the funkiest and smoothest tracks you'll ever hear. In fact, even if you've never heard old-school soul, you'll be familiar with the riffs and bass lines: they're the type of classics today's producers reference in almost every great party jam. Tracks like "Early in the Morning" and "Outstanding" are just ripe for sampling, and "Shake" and "Burn Rubber" throw you back in time, grooving on a dance floor and bobbin' your head. The adrenaline only slows for superslick ballads like "Yearning for Your Love." A blueprint for today's R&B. --Rebecca Wallwork
Customer Reviews:
Excellent The Best of Gap Band CD.......2006-11-12
The Gap Band was a very good R&B group in the early 80's and fans won't be disappointed with this best of CD, however the music of the Gap Band copied the P-Funk sound from the 70's and after a while the music was very repetitous and ran its course.Check out the songs "Humpin'","Burn Rubber","I Don't Believe You Want to Gep Up and Dance(Oops!)" all from the school of P-Funk albums...heavy synthesizer and throw away lyrics i.e."the bigger the headache the bigger the pill"(from Parliament's "Funkentelechy vs The Placebo Syndrome") nevertheless The Gap Band will always be remembered as one of the most successful R&B groups of the 80's
Takes you back!.......2006-07-10
I bought this CD to replace the exact same one that I wore out - and no disk cleaners could bring it back - if that gives you any idea of how great this CD is.
Essential disk for any funk fan!
Classic Overlooked Funk.......2006-02-27
These guys belong in any true funk fans collection, right next to Kool and the Gang and Dazz Band. Especially fun is "Humpin'" and the dance floor breaker, "You Dropped a Bomb on Me".
The Gap Band was a phenomenal group in the 80's.......2004-11-09
This album will not disappoint anyone who remembers these brothers; I had the pleasure of seeing them perform in Greenville, S.C. twice during their heyday & MAN...they could tear up the stage sumthin' fierce!!!! Early In The Morning is my favorite cut off the whole album; Party Train a close second. As far as slow cuts go, Yearning For Your Love is one of my favorite Quiet Storm type songs to listen to. Charlie Wilson has one of the best voices I've ever heard, along with Howard Hewitt & Luther Vandross. I highly recommend this collection.
"Outstanding" is not just a song title!.......2004-07-05
When one purchases a compilation like "The Best of the Gap Band", one realizes how influential the 80's group was. Every major hit by the trio is represented here in its full-length glory. The order of songs is perfect for a party; for example, the first cut ("Early in the Morning" with its trademark "rooster call") starts the disc off and is followed by the mid-tempo "Shake" and the slower paced "Outstanding".
The fire starts again as "Burn Rubber On Me (Why You Wanna Hurt Me)" ignites the set and leads into the soothing "Yearning for Your Love". The chart-topping "You Dropped A Bomb on Me" and "I Don't Believe You Want to Get Up and Dance (Oops!)" are two other classics that remind the listener of why these guys ruled the dance floors during the decade.
Along with Cameo, Parliament/Funkadelic, The Gap Band was the best at what they did: got folks and on the dance floor and kept them there!

Memories.......2007-05-16
I moved to Chicago in the late 70's from Connecticut and I was blessed to work for the Ohio Players Personal Manager. I was 21 yrs old and it was my first job in the music industry. When I hear their music it brings back the exciting life that I lived and it brings back wonderful personal memories for me
True Funkmeisters.......2007-04-10
I was lucky enough to see these guys perform at a FREE outdoor concert in Lower Manhattan around 2002, and let me tell you, they were KICKIN' IT. The horn section was real tight, and the lead singer still has all the funk of his earlier years. It was truly a beautiful event!!!!!!!!
How can you NOT feel the funk of Roller Coaster or Skintight??!!
Ohio Playas.......2006-03-07
These are my homeboys from Ohio and they know how to throw a party! They have several CD's but this one does it for me with the two slow tracks I want to be Free and Heaven must be like this. Sugarfoot made a CD on his own which I like but I can't find. Does anyone know where to get it has songs on it like I'm your Sugar etc...
SERIOUSLY FUNKED UP!.......2005-05-21
This is one funked up album! I bought this cd, mainly for
Fire, and Love Rollercoaster. But Skin Tight, is really
great, and Sweet Sticky Thing is too! Almost every song
on here is good! If you have an ounce of soul in your
system, and you love funk, THIS IS A MUST HAVE!
Pretty Good Compilation.......2005-04-20
If you're an Ohio Players fan like I am, you'll probably enjoy this CD. My favorite song is "Let's Do It (Interpolated with "Let's Love"). Next to Earth, Wind & Fire, these guys are my second favorite band of all time.

Put a glide in your stride and a dip in your hip.......2007-06-20
I'm by no means a funk expert. I spend most of my time listening to the likes of Rush, Porcupine Tree, and Pain of Salvation. But we all have the urge to explore and from time to time get our groove on. The Mothership is the place to do it. This was my first venture into Gearge Clinton's world and it still remains my favorite. From the opening "Do not attempt to adjust your radio," To the closing "Ga Ga Do Ga's" of Night of the Thumpasorus Peoples, This is a masterpiece. Clinton's skills as a songwriter, producer, and band leader are impressive to say the least. Through layers of vocals, horns and Bootsie's bouncing bass he guides his creation on a flawless musical journey. Philosophically he shares a great deal with the practitioners of progressive rock exploreing far and wide, relying on the virtuosity of his bandmates, incorporateing all styles he can get his hands on, and lets face it Bernie Worrell reaches stratospheres Rick Wakeman only dreamed of. The end result is a groove laden voyage to a place somewhere between Shaft and The Outer Limits. It's very strange, very out there, and very satifying.
Legendary.......2007-05-10
No other funk album of this era or any other moved me the way this one did,I not only had the pleasure of seeing this tour twice during that time but also actually had the pleasure of hanging out with these guys after one of the shows!, little did I know at the time just how significant this would be, Glen Goins was my all time favorite not to mention the fact that I play guitar as well.
Mike Hampton gave me a couple of picks, I still to this day have them.
Space Is The Place.......2007-01-10
This is funk the way it should be, as Parliament keeps the groove going strong in the original seven cuts, plus one bonus track.
Released in February 1976, the album and the single - Tear The Roof Off The Sucker - charted on both the Billboard pop (album, #13; single, #15) and black charts (album, #4; single, #5). Yes, gotta give a shout out to that music industry segregation!
With Maceo Parker and Fred Wesley adding more power to the horn section - which also featured the Becker Bros. - the trio of George Clinton, Bootsy Collins and Bernie Worrell pen three dynamite numbers; P-Funk, Mothership Connection & Give Up The Funk.
The album is also the debut of Starchild - a character based on Sun Ra's Black Noah - in the P-Funk Mythology. Starchild's life is explained further in the 1976 album, The Clones of Dr. Funkenstein.
Arguably the greatest Parliament album ever, you will wear out the CD before growing tired of the rhythms on Mothership Connection.
Make mine the P-Funk.......2006-12-26
In 1975, the Mothership touched down. Sure, there had been Parliament albums before this, but none had been remotely like this. It's a concept album, but don't let that scare you off, because the concept is funk from outer space that had been stored in the pyramids and was being retrieved by "Star Child". And the whole thing is as utterly goofball as the concept suggests. Okay, onto the music...
Things open with P-Funk (Wants to Get Funked Up), an excellent intro to the band's new direction if there ever was one. It's eight minutes of groove, with George (and Sir Lollipop Man, alias the long-haired sucka)'s hilarious, offhand spoken comments about how Funk can save your life - but only P-Funk, that is funk played by station WEFUNK, which of course comes from space. The next song, Mothership Connection (Starchild) is arguably the best of the bunch. Of course you can dance to it, and you'll probably end up singing along with the "swing low, sweet chariot stop and/let me ride" bridge. Hell, you might even burst out singing it randomly when it isn't playing. It's happened to me.
You don't hear much about the next three tracks, but they're all worth hearing, too. First off is the ironically funky Unfunky UFO, about saving a "dying world" from its "unfunkiness", which to me means "its lack of peace and unity" - it's amazing just what Clinton could do with the "funk" metaphor. Madcap genius, or what? Anyway, great message, even better song. Supergroovalisticprosifunkstication (The Thumps Bump), one of the coolest titles ever (its only rival being Parliament's own Aqua Boogie (A Psychoalphadiscobetabioaquadooloop)), follows. To me, this stretches the metaphor from last tune - maybe I'm overanalyzing, but if I am I like what I'm picking up. Anyway, this is another unforgettable lost classic. Next is Handcuffs, perhaps the weakest song here, but a great tune that would've led the pack on a lesser disc. It's by far the most traditional thing here, a love (okay, sex) song not related to the concept, and a charming, clever one at that - sort of like Wizard of Finance.
Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof off the Sucker) is anthem central. Sure, the lyrics are simple, with just a couple phrases repeated for six minutes. But it's more about the groove than the lyrics - rap would probably NOT have happened without this song, and though I wouldn't complain about that, why blame Parliament for their followers? Anyway, it's a great song - subtle horn arrangement, heavy bass, drums and keyboards (the Bernie Worrel show!), unforgettable intro sung in baritone over percussion (sound like rap to anyone?) Classic stuff. Lastly is Night of the Thumpasorus Peoples. It's hilarious, a chant that begins with "I am high/we are high...". Hilarious!
Of course, Parliament was dominated by George Clinton, but it wouldn't have happened without Bernie Worrell or Bootsy Collins. Long live George, Bernie and Bootsy, everybody's favorite utterly goofball geniuses!
Best Parliament CD.......2006-12-18
This is a great CD by Parliament. When it was first released it was a good CD, but now it has bonus tracks. If you look at their greatest hits CD, you'll notice that the majority of these songs are on there, such as Tear the Roof Off The Sucker and Mothership COnnection.

I LOVE THIS CD!!!!.......2007-04-10
This CD is NOT a remix..like so many of them are these days...this is the REAL DEAL...all the songs are GREAT!!! I just love it!
Great set of tunes!!.......2005-05-16
Celebration: The Best of Kool & the Gang is the best songs from a great band.
In fact, I NEVER met anyone who did not love Kool & the Gang.
one of the best of their "best of"s.......2005-02-04
It's a great compilation of Kool & the Gangs hits. Although a few hits are missing here: Rocksteady, Summer Madness, Emergency, Be My Lady, Good Time Tonight,... But it is really too hard to collect all their hits in just one CD, 'cause they have soooo many good songs.
The Penultimate Collection.......2004-07-04
I actually give this 3-CD collection 3.5 stars. CD 1 will teleport to the great times of the 70's and 80's. CD 2 incorporates more synthesizers and has more of a rock 'n roll feel. If they had left songs like "Straight Ahead", "Peacemaker", "Rags To Riches" and "Strong" off of the second CD and added the three missing classics, "Summer Madness", "Hollywood Swinging" and "Open Sesame", I would have given this CD collection 5 stars. CD 3 provides hipper (remix) versions of a couple classic tunes. Thus, this not the ultimate collection but the penultimate collection. Still, it's a nice CD.
Buy the combo.......2004-01-27
The CD is a good complilation of the later works of Kool & The Gang. It compliments the Best of Kool & the Gang 1969-76 CD, so I suggest buying the both of them if you want a comlete collection of CDs that cover Kool & the Gang's career with out overlapping and duplicating tracks. Added bonus: the version of "Cherish" on this CD is the extended track.

Amazon.com essential recording
On this follow-up to Mothership Connection, George Clinton uncharacteristically sticks to the same funk-disco formula. Unlike most sequels, however, this 1977 work is nearly as compelling as the original. Check your brain at the door while Clinton feeds you infectious dance rhythms and irreverent lyrics that fuse anthemic chants with bizarre fairy tales and stream-of-consciousness ramblings. On "Wizard of Finance," Parliament returns to melodic 1960s soul while Clinton's hysterical lyrics are backed by soulful doowop-style vocals. "Flash Light" became a huge dance-floor hit but actually pales in comparison to the rest of the grooves. With talents including Bernie Worrell, Maceo Parker, and Fred Wesley on board, it's no wonder the profunk forces defeat the antifunk contingent. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
Total P-Funk Package.......2007-07-02
This is George and the Funk Mob at the height of their game. Fat, funky baselines, heavy grooves and some of the funniest phrases ever uttered over music. I just wish the CD included the Overton Lloyd comic book and the Sir Nose poster that you got with the album back in the day...
Music for All Ages & Races, .......2007-06-04
This band is a band that defines how music can bring people together and show the power of music to do amazing positive things. While Jazz music might have caused white people to listen, Funk music forced white people to join in on the songs. Its hard to tell whether another band has been able to do that since Parliament, the band that is funk!
"Dance, sucka!".......2006-12-03
Really, who can resist bursting out laughing when George shouts that line out in the middle of Flash Light? Not me, that's for sure. This is a classic, arguably the best Parliament album (though one could make a case for Mothership Connection). Like Mothership Connection, it's a concept album that doesn't take itself even remotely seriously. On the contrary, it's a riot.
First off is Bop Gun (Endangered Species). What a song! Funky bassline, great ensemble vocals, cool horn chart and an awesome fake ending... classic stuff there. Then comes the first of the two ten-minute grooves: Sir Nose D'voidoffunk (Pay Attention - B3M), which introduces ol' Smell-O-Vision himself, Sir Nose D'Voidoffunk. This song is arguably the funniest in Parliament's catalogue, and certainly one of the funkiest. The clever, charming Wizard of Finance is a more Motown-sounding song, with a great bassline and horn part. It's funny, too!
Now for Funkentelechy, arguably Parliament's best song EVER. It's a monster eleven-minute groove that'll have you dancing and laughing at the same time. The basic concept of the song: choose funk (which stands for all that is good) over the fake, material things in the world. Maybe I'm overanalyzing, but whatever. It's great. Placebo Syndrome is probably the weakest song here, but it's still pretty good, with a solid groove. The Placebo Syndrome, if you were curious, is disco (which stands for all that is fake and material). The whole thing closes out with Flash Light, which revives the Nose. This ended up their biggest hit, a masterpiece with great bassline, a hilarious chant taken from a Bar Mitzvah, cool fake ending, and Clinton yelling out "Dance, sucka!" - two words that sum this album up perfectly.
Ah, yeah... THIS is how ya play funk!
How's Your Funk en-telech-y? How's Your Funk entelechy?.......2006-09-13
Yo this is the mood control....Need I say anything else? This masterpiece of dance/funk and just plain fun camE out hardbody!
It starts off with Parliament/Glenn Goins "On Guard, Defend Yourself!". The Pfunk was letting you know that if you are devoid of funk, you are gettin' hit with the Bop Gun! And the ever famous Sir Nose D'Voidoffunk. You got to be out of your natural mind or at least from out of space to come up with those lyrics! The music is smooth and Bootsy Collins just ripped that Bass line! Now outside of all that and the never dying Flashlight, my all time favorite is "Funkentelechy". Parliament's musical performance on this was slammin' From the Drums/Bass/Guitars setting it off and Ray Davis' "Yo' this is the mood control......."sets you in a place where you are on the Mothership chillin'. I know, musically, I've been there! You really need to sit back and let this cut do it to your earhole! It is like being on the Mothership kicked-back with some Kool-Aid playin' spades and tellin' "Your mother is so fat" jokes! Funkentelechy is not just a song but an experience----"How's you Funkentelechy?=-----FUNK ON---YO HO!!!!!
More Funk Magic.......2006-03-21
Parliament's superlative follow up to The Mothership Connection.
The finest blend of funk, rock & dance music, at a time when James Brown was going through a dry period and Sly had pimped himself out.
Clinton, Collins, Worrell & Co. were truly unsung magicians, who deserved a lot more publicity then they received through their career. They are hardly known outside the US, UK and Australia. Yet they are probably the biggest influence on rap and hip-hop music.
