Amazon.com's Best of 1999
Though it boasts the spark and spontaneity of a "blowing session," Friendly Fire is much more than a battle of the saxes. Osby and Lovano share an ability to balance thoughtful and reflective lyricism, muscular drive, and explorative curiosity. Backed by young piano talent Jason Moran and legendary drummer Idris Muhammad, the pair craft an album that manages to be both daring and down home. --Marc Greilsamer

The genial competitive fires fanned in almost any two-saxophone encounter rank among the most revered moments in jazz. Although Basie downplayed notions of a rivalry by spacing other soloists in between them, the flames fed by the Count's stylistic opposites--the cool Lester Young and the earthy Herschel Evans--are still being felt today. After the success of 1998's superb Phil Woods and Johnny Griffin date, The Rev & I, Blue Note decided to pair tenor Joe Lovano and alto Greg Osby for Friendly Fire, a summit meeting. Each saxophonist possesses an adventurous harmonic pallet and a love for freely inflected yet swinging rhythmic interplay, as illustrated by their work on "The Wild East" and Ornette Coleman's "Broad Way Blues." Still, as their more reflective playing on "Monk's Mood" and Eric Dolphy's "Serene" illustrates, Lovano and Osby both possess a graceful lyric dimension. Youthful pianist Jason Moran and veteran bassist Cameron Brown allow the saxophonists the freedom to stretch all the way out or swing with authority, but it is the New Orleans drummer Idris Muhammad who holds it all together with his elemental grooves and peacock's array of melodic timbres, to particular effect on Lovano's tribute, "Idris." --Chip Stern

Nowadays, no one anywhere is expecting the Beatles progeny to produce material approaching the greatness of their pops. This means they can finally relax and just make some music, which would seem to suit the younger Lennon boy just fine. Fire is a piano- and guitar-driven collection of likeable, melancholic, Elliott Smith-y, Rufus Wainwright-ish pop music. The brief, sing-songy, Clapton-by-numbers guitar solos are a bit of a puzzler, but it's not like they're bad by any means. The guest appearances are a strange lot. His mother's here, longtime collaborator Yuka Honda as well, and Beastie Boy DJ Money Mark, too (which makes sense as Sean used to be on Grand Royal and the whole album has a mid '90s vibe to it). All these sleazy Hollywood types creep in here, too: Vincent Gallo, Lindsay Lohan, "superstar" DJ Steve Aoki. Thankfully, it sounds a lot better than any MisShapes party. Lennon sings "Let's hide the diamonds and cocaine for another day/But don't forget to pray," so maybe the dude isn't the best lyricist around. But Friendly Fire is really very good throughout. It's easily the finest music made by a Lennon since, well, you know. --Mike McGonigal

Left me hungry for more.... wonderful.......2007-07-11
I purchased this mostly hoping for a surreal music DVD. I was not disappointed. I loved the DVD. It was fun and surreal. (So refreshing from the onslot of "T and A" music videos I often see on cable.) What's better is that I loved the music even more than I expected to. It is one of my favorite cd's. It is just great stuff. Especially if you just listen to it for what it is without the seemingly obligatory comparisons. If Sean does another one like it, I will be the first in line to eat it up. It is melodical, kind of dreamy with some nice slightly haunting feel to some of it.
Heard it first live.......2007-06-30
I went to see Sean live in concert. Let me tell you, it was great. Sean was funny, witty, classy and amazing to watch. He sang all the songs from "Friendly Fire", and he also sang one from "Into the Sun". He was entertaining and put on a really good show. You should buy his new album. It's a delight.
Surprised.......2007-04-27
I am actually very surprised to see negative reviews by so many people. I admit that I was a little skeptical about this album being that it is from Sean Lennon. I didn't know whether it would sound like John Lennon or something completely strange. When I first heard it, I was kinda neutral on it. As I continued to listen to it, I found that it was a great album. I really enjoy his use of minor chords. I saw that on an album review for "Into the Sun", someone said that his voice is out of tune. I do not own, "Into the Sun" so I cannot speak for that album, but I do play three instruments and I do know what out of tune sounds like, and he certainly is not on "Friendly Fire". Yeah, there is not much fluctuation on the tracks. They do tend to have a similar sound, but I still find the album enjoyable and something to just chill to. He is definitely an artist that is a "required taste". (Just like Bob Dylan-who is someone that I do not enjoy.) Personally, I really enjoy the album from the songs to his mellow voice. I guess to each his own.
DISTURBING.......2007-04-21
ATTENTION ALL JOHN LENNON FANS.I DON'T THINK I NEED TO POINT OUT THAT THE TITLE OF THIS CD IS SICK AND IN TOTAL BAD TASTE.TAKING A QUOTE FROM JOHN HIMSELF,"I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE."BUT THEN AGAIN NOTHING SEAN EVER DOES WILL EVER COME CLOSE TO TOPPING JULIANS BRILLIANT PHOTOGRAPH SMILE CD.

It's hard to not like a good-looking, female-fronted, Brooklyn-based band whose name translates loosely as "playful sex." The obvious vocal comparisons are to shoegazers and goths of twelve to thirty years agoSiouxsie, Spirea X, Lush, Kate Bush, and the Cocteauu Twins. Singing in Japanese and English, vocalist Yuki's heavily reverbed voice is sensual and strong at the same time. But there's more of a manic, vaguely garage band energy evident on Citrus, the group's sophomore release (a vast improvement over their scattered debut). It's clear now that they're far closer to Blondie than My Bloody Valentine or Loop. The band has a woozy sound, but it's also tightly controlled and highly melodic, propelled by Interpol-ish bass lines. It's not "original" music, but it is very pleasant stuff, the ideal soundtrack to a hot affair in some futuristic hotel tucked away downtown, or out near the airport. --Mike McGonigal

Good stuff, solid record. Some of the later tracks seem a bit weaker, but I haven't listened to them as many times. Recommended, nevertheless.

I couldn't care less about how you categorize this album in musical terms, who it sounds like, or doesn't - all I know is, if you liked the atmospheric sounds in the movie Lost in Translation, you'll probably like this. It IS great music to work to, as someone else wrote, and it's also great to take a long, mellow walk with. Some music *changes* your mood, but some is better served as a soundtrack *for* your mood. Just enjoy it.
outstanding album!.......2006-09-19
whenever a new bands surfaces and mines old territory, the naysayers inevitably appear and begin to knock down the current in favor of the past. not only is comparing the present to past generally unfair and shortsighted, it's also amounts to a display on narrow-mindedness. no, asobi seksu aren't my bloody valentine, slowdive, ride, swervedriver, or any number of other shoegazer bands. shoegazing hit its peak nearly 15 years ago. those who hold on to as though it were some holy grail do themselves a disservice by refusing to properly acknowledge a band who has nothing but love for the aforementioned band.
asobi seksu, a nyc quarted, is a crazily fantastic band. sure, the elements of shoegazing are there, name in the swirling, kaleidoscopic guitars and yuki's occasional elizabeth-frasier-esque vocals tics. but yuki owes more of debt to harriet wheeler than elizabeth frasier. asobi seksu is everything that's right about great pop/rock music. tight, effecient songs, effortless melodies, intricate and interesting musicianship, and enough energy to light a city for weeks. if it seems that asobi seksu is a highly calculated band, nothing could be futher from the truth.
through they do mine familiar shoegazer territory, asobi seksu is a highly orginal and exciting band. the first 1/2 of the album is as good as anything i've heard in a LONG time (and i listen to a lot of music). the one-two punch of 'new years' and 'thursday' is as great as anything you'll hear this year. both are heavy, exciting, i dare say thrilling, tracks. the choruses, particularly 'thursday,' are spine chilling.
sure, asobi seksu will make you a bit nostalgic for the days of mbv and slowdive, but they'll also make you excited about the future of music. with a soundtrack like this, how can life be anything but beautiful and wonderful? a really remarkable album.
Please enter a title for your review.......2006-08-05
This album gives new-school shoegaze a mediocre name, as did their debut. Asobi Seksu is basically a second rate Hartfield, who are a patchy band to begin with. Track 10 has a nice dissonant guitar part, and track 7 is more melodically spacey than the rest, but mostly there's too much monotonous strumming and not enough melodic focus or distinctive chord progressions. The vocals are strongly projected but lost in the mix, like they couldn't decide whether the vocals were supposed to be a focal point or understated. The vocals also particularly fail at contributing any distinct melodies. Mostly this album is just too bland to raise an eyebrow, although pleasant enough to be tolerable if you don't focus on it too directly
Beautiful floating pop rock.......2006-07-08
When I picked up this album today, I had never heard of this group, let alone heard any of their music. But I'm glad I got this album! This music is right down my line.
What I hear in the music is a blend of psychedelia, 80s pop, and lots of that wonderful early 90s music that I call "brightwave," but I guess the common term is shoegazer--music like Cocteau Twins, Autumn's Grey Solace, or Lush.
"Exotic Animal Paradise" and "Red Sea" remind me the most of Cocteau Twins, their shimmering, floating sound that I associate with big ocean waves and peaceful summer days. "Red Sea" has a big sound grand ending. "Thursday" also has some of this sound at the end, but with more of a feel-good pop flavor.
Songs such as "New Years," "Goodbye," and "Mizu Asobi" have a sound that reminds me of cheerful, quirky 80s new wave pop, where I hear occasional touches of Blondie, glitzed up with fuzzed-out, psychedelia guitars. In some songs, such as "Strings" and "Pink Cloud Tracing Paper," I hear traces of mid-80s New Order influence.
The songs are sung in a mixture of English and Japanese, with all the tracks but one featuring a female vocalist. There's not a song on here I don't like. This is quintessential summer music for me, and I expect to be listening to this a lot the remainder of this summer.
March 2007 Update: I originally reviewed the day I got it in summer 2006. Amazon's system doesn't permit changing of stars, but if I could, I would change this to 5 stars. There was no album in 2006 whose music I liked better than this one. The music is so beautiful that it deeply moves me.

I don't know how this band has flown under the radar. They are so much better than blonde redhead, the obvious comparison. female front girl, standing about 4.5 ft tall, has one of the most amazing voices i have ever heard. haunting, beautiful, primal, passionate, backed by crescendo guitar work (some smashing pumpkins hidden in there), retro synthesizer sound, a bit of joy division, but truly unique. saw them live recently, and that is an experience. this is a no brainer.

Every incarnation of this core pairing (Ray Ketchum and Renée LoBue now with Sean Eden and Barbara Endes) has had the same effect on me. The songs are following me around everywhere I go after just a couple of plays. Elk City's uncanny ability to mix infectious pop hooks with musically challenging arrangements produce a range of interesting tracks that grab you instantly and still challenge your expectations enough to give the tracks their timeless appeal. Beautifully haunting melodies from Renée and flawless musical craftsmanship by the band!

Imagine a late night slowcore band viewed through fogged up glass..........2006-03-19
There's just something about music that is slow and mysterious, foggy and indistinct, fuzzy and dreamlike that just gets me everytime. Any sort of music sounds better to me, once it's buried in record crackle, or wrapped in thick swirls of fuzzy distortion, or smeared with a gauzy ambient haze. But the music of Faunts is so perfectly suited to being goergeously obfuscated that it's hard to imagine this music any other way.
High Expectations doesn't sound like some crystal clear recording that was later treated with all sort of foggy filters, no this record sounds like it was created like this, birthed from some mysterious ether, a ghostlike sonic wraith, dreamy droney slow motion rock drifting skyward like some disembodied slowcore spectre. Blissy and incandescent, with a candelit churchlike warmth, a glow suffusing the air all around. Like a druggier more fuzzy Low. Each track a lugubrious creep, romantic and melancholy, hushed vocals, brushed drums and swoonsome lapsteel. Occasionally the songs build to a ferocious climax, the sound like a wall of blown out shoegaze guitars, with big distorted drums, beneath squiggly white hot traces of incendiary psychedelic skree, before drifting back to earth, a slow simmer, fuzzy melodies drifitng over and around ethereal vocals and muted mood rock minimalism.
Imagine a late night slowcore band, viewed through fogged up glass, thick with running rainwater, everything wavery and blisssfully unfocused, every once in a while the headlights of a passing car flare brilliantly, spinning wild prisms of color and white hot sparkles before fading back to a muted dusky drift.
High Expectations has lots of varied elements, even if they only surface briefly here and there, some jazzy shuffle, some jangly indie rock, some Flaming Lips-ish big beat drug pop, some epic Godspeed-ish, even a bit of near-new wave, but those disparate elements all manage to get woven deftly and beautifully into Faunts' delicate and drowsy sonic world.
i heart the faunts.......2005-12-29
a beautiful introspective album that winds perfectly through a rainy sunday or a mellow night. the songs are long and develop slowly but are not hesitant. it is in constant rotation at my place. check it out if you like sigur ros, etc.
Spacey.......2005-12-14
Wicked downtempo shoegazy indie tunes for fans of Slowdive and Sigur Ros. Perfect soundtrack for a rainy day.
zigavoo.......2005-11-16
transcends the listener to another dimension of sound. The vision that this band has is unbelievably unique. JUST SHUT YOUR EYES AND LET IT TAKE YOU AWAY!!!
Hell Yeah!.......2005-11-04
Some fine space rock here! Some of the songs drag just a little and thats tough for me to say because i'm a strong believer in looooong songs but you need to keep it intersting. For the most part this album is truely great and I have complete faith that their albums will grow stronger with each release. 9 songs (58 Min)

Two of the brightest stars of Modern Jazz.......2000-04-25
Mr. Lovano and Mr. Osby are both in top form here. They are definitely two creators in an often stagnant jazz scene. They interact very well with each other, making this a positive musical exchange rather than any kind of competition. The result: everyone wins; Lovano, Osby, the "supporting cast", and the listener.
a great blowin' session!!.......1999-07-04
blue note records has always been known for its blowing sessions when a group of blue note artists would gather in the studio for an explosive, usually competive session that resulted in some outstanding jazz. this is right in that tradition, but with one subtle change. the feel here is conversation rather than a battle of the horns, or tonal basketball game (for those, see johnny griffin's recently reissued "blowin' session" featuring a stompin' blast between griffin and guests hank mobley & john cotrane!). on "friendly fire" the two saxes explore one another's particular language and style. for example, the opener "geo j lo" features lovano delving into osby's idiom, while "idris" sees osby adapt to lovano. the results are excellent. we get to experience a new facet for each artist all through the session, and it swings!! purely musical highlights for me were "broadway fools" and "idris." the supporting cast moves things along well, countering and balancing each solist and showing some fine solo work of their own. jason moran may be a new gem, while idris mohammed shines through as an often overlooked treasure. a good album!!
